WikiCup 2013 April newsletter

We are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place Casliber (submissions) and second place Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.

The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact one of the judges.

A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Hi, see you've greatly improved the 'Threats' text. You've also used the Echinoblog... prob. not a reliable source. We can see that Mah knows his stuff; I already used him to locate sources on toxins -very helpful- but I doubt we can use him directly; if we cite him at all, suggest it should be supported by direct refs to toxicology papers, etc. And probably every sentence needs a ref, too. Actually, despite his schoolboy-like appearance, Christopher Mah is a respected researcher on echinoderms with many published papers and I would argue that the Echinoblog is a reliable source. I'm working on Thomas Pennant's correspondent Gilbert White's The Natural History of Selborne, which I feel is getting close to being ready for GA ... as probably Pennant is - I'd be happy to help shepherd it through, if you'd like that? I'm not sure if you want help on, er, xeric habitats, but if you do (Human relations?) then I can give it a go. I've more or less run out of steam on Starfish unless you have any ideas on that, too. I was thinking that Thomas Pennant was about ready for GA but haven't actually looked at it since we started on Sea. Theoretically, the results of the Core Competition are due in about a week, but they have always been late in the past. There may be some useful ideas as to if or how the article needs to be developed so I propose we discuss its future when the Core Competition is concluded. As to my present dry assignment, I am enjoying taking it at my leisure but if you care to do the human face of it, you are welcome. I plan to look at Starfish tonight and will comment on how its getting on, on the talk page. Little Jerry and I are currently involved in an FA of Manta Ray which I expect will conclude soon. Just had a look at Desert - coming on really well! But too many images have accreted (in a dune?) on the leeward side of the text... If any suggestion is needed, I'd say the Rub' al Khali shd be at the top, alone, with |upright=1.5|; the "Largest non-polar deserts" should be down in Geography near the list of top 10 deserts; that Flora shd have just one or two obviously cactus-y images (Saguaro), leave out the dead tree etc; and generally chuck the rest of the images (out, or into a gallery at the end, or something). I haven't yet done much with the images and will probably leave them mostly till I have finished the text. Too many scenic dunes at the moment. I am fortunate in that nobody else seems to "own" the article and want to get into dispute about what I am doing. Sea scored me 74 points at DYK. It had a 7.2 multiplier for being on about 180 different language wikipedias and scored a bonus of 2 points because it was previously classified as a stub! The multiplier will also provide worthwhile scores if it attains GA or FA. Thomas Pennant has a 1.4 multiplier and should score 42 points if it attains GA. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:43, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Amazing! I'm working on Gilbert White and Thomas Bewick, having finished drafting articles on their books (White's now in the GA queue), and have dropped bits into Thomas Pennant when I kept on coming across them while reading about White. Happily nobody seems to 'own' them, either -- it's nice not to have to fight, but some critical discussion would be useful actually, as it's hard to crit. one's own work until a few months later, I find. Done. Also fixed the dreadful copyvio in Minerals. I'm not sure if the human life in deserts is also a cv or whether other sites have mirrored us. Well, I did wonder about that when I wrote "I take it that this is a copyright violation" on your talkpage. I looked around the USGS site but could find no reference to its copyright status but you seem to imply that any US government publication is usable. Thank you for making the changes, but you have reworded it a bit untruly. It was practiced not just in 1986; alas, I can't find source which states that such was a practice for all those years. The reference is to a 1986 news article and, even if the practice is widespread and has continued long since then, it would be wrong to imply it was still in force without further evidence. Two small points that interested me in connection with the contents of the book. My brilliant FA Common toad ;-), explains that the toad is nocturnal and will snap at anything of an appropriate size that it sees moving, even the researcher's scrap of black material. So using the toad to test for Batesian mimicry was not ideal. Also in the toad article, it explains how some predatory birds disembowel the toad and feed on its interior rather than consume the toxins in its skin. So the statement " the great horned owl is known to prey on the skunk, showing that even such a disagreeably pungent animal can be subject to predation" does not amount to much either. Many thanks for the review. Yes, these are reasons why with 20/20 hindsight we can see that Darwin and Bates were right, their critics wrong. Beddard did his best but does look much too skeptical of Darwin today. Poulton clung on for dear life while neo-Lamarckism did its thing. Darwin himself was rightly worried that there was no known mechanism for discrete (non-blending) inheritance; if only he'd heard of Mendel's paper. It took until the 1920s for the theory to right itself (like a lifeboat, it pretty much did a 360 deg. roll...) and for biologists to see things very differently. When I add comments to a review page, on the editing page I try to leave a blank line between comment threads. This makes it easier to distinguish different threads from each other when editing the page. Would you consider doing this please? WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members). So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers: Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available". Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. Thank for drawing my attention to this, it does seem rather confusing. In Google Scholar, 4 results come up for Cynaria lacrymalis and 91 results for Cynarina lacrymalis. I was in a similar position with Eurasian Blackcap, where I also had a 120-page book. That topped out at 152k, as compared with your current 146k. Tern was 205k, but that's a family article. I don't think you need to worry just yet, you can trim and reorganise when you have all the data in. I didn't see much where I thought you were going into too much detail, although I'd be cautious about local conservation efforts (how many are there?), and, at present, some material, like feeding, is spread over several sections and could probably be rationalised a bit Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:14, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

Plant anatomy

D'you know what, I think it's mad to cover plants in the anatomy article. Sure, motorcycles have anatomy of a sort, but there's nothing in common between the structure of plants and animals. I suggest we just say something along the general lines of "Plant anatomy is the study of the internal structure of plants; plant morphology studies their external structure. The two together are roughly analogous to the study of the anatomy of animals." and leave it at that. It's barmy to start again. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:27, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

And, um, I think trying to cover, er, insects, er, crustaceans, er, the whole arthropod phylum, er, starfish, er, everything else... is even madder. Again, let's just put in one sentence saying "anatomy as generally understood is a medical or veterinary term, covering the body structures of vertebrates" ... mumble something about homology .. mutter something rapidly about all other organisms obviously having structure too, and stop. A splendid new history section, just what I was looking for! I agree with you about plant anatomy and invertebrate anatomy, but I was trying to fill the pre-existing sections as I thought it was the "will of the people". Oh good. I've had a hunt thro' the history, and it seems the wish for plants, as for broadening things from human/mammal anatomy, is purely down to Jarble - who has added nothing except a few headings and the tag. Animal anatomy

I'd say once you've filled in the remaining section, it's DYK-ready, and well on the way beyond that.

The 'Animal anatomy' navbox at the end is grimly misnamed - I've put a note on its talk page. I guess someone muddled animal and mammal. The navbox links to "Animal anatomy", which - you guessed - redirects to the section of that name in Anatomy. ("While animals generally have four legs to run around on, jellyfish have tentacles that they don't run on, and sponges have no legs at all and don't even fall over when they've drunk a lot.") Yeah. Fantastic effort. Agree on the H.A. section. I've been awfully bold and promoted humans out of their taxonomic slot, as Human Anatomy is unlike the other sections in being all about Research and Practice - so I've made that a subsection and added a new one on Structure (just a list right now, possibly needs refs) with Main links to the Outline and Human body articles - it's actually a mess with multiple overlaps and gaps. I've also added a few lines of overview for the Vertebrates as the section just went straight down to group (Class) level with nothing at the top - so we need a couple of citations there too. Yes. I think I've retired from cam and colour as essentially done ... unless anyone brave and knowledgeable wants to help get something to FA of course. 'Of the making of books there is no end', but I've similarly brought to GA the ones I was aiming to cover, so right now I'm writing rather than reading... who knows where it'll lead! - Very happy to join in collaborations, it's productive, and it's amazing how scrappy the top 1,000 'vital articles' are. Animal tissues

Looking at Anatomy again, I'm not sure I understand why there's a sizeable chunk on Animal tissues; it feels out of place (and indeed the next section, Human anatomy, seems more like the place to start). Not sure why you've done so much on Reptiles either - will the other classes be similarly extended? Could be too much; I rather feel the Human anatomy should be about (at least?) half the article, what do you think the balance should be? Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:52, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

I could have called it tissues rather than animal tissues and it comes under the heading of microscopic anatomy mentioned in the lead. As for the reptiles, there are five orders and three of amphibians whereas the mammals and birds have less diversity. Also I realised that the article was a bit short for the fivefold DYK expansion. It can be trimmed down later. I have not really been thinking about the human aspect at all. Any ideas? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 16:07, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Well, there's basically an infinite supply of material for the H.A. section - Gray's Anatomy... and lots of it is already in the other WP articles, so I'm afraid of duplication - what is really needed is a plan for the whole area, so it's clear how the articles are supposed to fit together. FWIW I think it'd be sensible to include an image of the body dissected down to some level, e.g. all skin removed, abdomen open. That could be labelled with the major systems that are already listed. OK a bit Dorling Kindersley but there it is. I guess the next level would be to extend the brief sentence on each system to a short paragraph; after that it widens out dramatically, probably a no-no.

Hm. I think what's needed is a sense of hierarchy and fitting in. At the mo, we go straight from lead into Tissues, then Human, then all these animals. Something not right there. I'd say we should go lead, Human, hierarchy of body-systems-organs-tissues with section of about equal size on all of those (i.e. my bit on systems, new bit on organs, your bit on tissues). Hey Cwmhiraeth

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Hi Cwmhiraeth, I see you've changed the image. Guess I can tell why, but the image is actually far less characteristic of V. than the other one (there are plenty of good similar ones to choose from). This one, obviously, shows only a skeleton, not an anatomy dissection; it does not have one of the amazing Italianate landscapes in the background; and it is thus highly atypical (being more of a memento mori than anything). WikiCup 2013 June newsletter

We are down to our final 16: the 2013 semi-finals are upon us. A score of 321 was required to survive round 3, further cementing this as the most competitive WikiCup yet; round 3 was survived in 2012 with 243 points, in 2011 with 76 points and in 2010 with 250 points. The change may in part be to do with the fact that more articles are now awarded bonus points, in addition to more competitive play. Reaching the final has, in the past, required 573 points (2012, a 135% increase on the score needed to reach round 4), 150 points (2011, a 97% increase) and 417 points (2010, a 72% increase). This round has seen over a third of participants claiming points for featured articles (with seven users claiming for multiple featured articles) and most users have also gained bonus points. However, the majority of points continue to come from good articles, followed by did you know articles. In this round, every content type was utilised by at least one user, proving that the WikiCup brings together content contributors from all corners of the project.

Round 3 saw a number of contributions of note. Figureskatingfan (submissions) claimed the first featured topic points in this year's competition for her excellent work on topics related to Maya Angelou, the noted American author and poet. We have also continued to see high-importance articles improved as part of the competition: Ealdgyth (submissions) was awarded a thoroughly well-earned 560 points for her featured article Middle Ages and 102 points for her good article Battle of Hastings. Good articles James Chadwick and Stanislaw Ulam netted Hawkeye7 (submissions) 102 and 72 points respectively, while 72 points were awarded to Piotrus (submissions) for each of Władysław Sikorski and Emilia Plater, both recently promoted to good article status. Collaborative efforts between WikiCup participants have continued, with, for example, Casliber (submissions) and Sasata (submissions) being awarded 180 points each for their featured article on Boletus luridus.

A rules reminder: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on the 29/30 June, which may be claimed in this round. I think neither. It seems to be a term for a bulbous-shaped storage organ, resembling a Roman ampulla I guess. At the moment my computer is a pain, with every web page taking 40 to 60 seconds to load. This restricts what I can efficiently do on Wikipedia and I will have to get it sorted. I will look into them. There may be places in the article where there was no reference and I searched for something suitable but it did not fully cover the topic. I must say that I am not now impressed by the work I did on this article before the GA last year. WikiCup 2013 July newsletter

We're halfway through this year's penultimate round, and the competition is moving along well. Pool A's Sasata (submissions) currently leads overall, while Pool B's Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) is second. Both leaders are WikiCup veterans, and both have already scored over 600 points this month. If the round were to end today, Miyagawa (submissions), with 274 points, would be the lowest-scoring participant to make it through. This indicates that participants will need a score comparable to last year's (573, the highest ever) to qualify for the final. The high scores this year are a testament both to the quality of participants and to the increased focus on significant content (eligible for bonus points) in this year's competition. So far this round, both Sasata and Cwmhiraeth (submissions) have made up over half of their score through bonus points, with, for example, high importance FA koala earning Sasata a total of 440 points (from a multiplier of 4.4) and high-importance GA sea earning Cwmhiraeth a total of 216 points (from a multiplier of 7.2). Other articles on important topics submitted this round include a featured article on the Norman conquest of England by Ealdgyth (submissions), and good articles on Nobel laureate in literature Henryk Sienkiewicz, Nobel laureate in physics Hans Bethe, and the noted Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryū. Atlantic Puffin Cladogram

Brilliant. That would have taken me hours and hours to try to figure out and I would probably have failed in the end. Two things I notice that are not quite right:

• The Tuffed Puffin & Rhinoceros Auklet are not displaying as they should be.
• The word Alcidae should be one place to the right. The red-billed gull and redwinged pratincole are not part of the family Alcidae and in fact, I think they should be omitted from the cladogram which would then consist purely of the family Alcidae. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:24, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

You would be best advised to consult WikiProject Gastropods if you want to take that course of action. There are several active members and some might like to help. For the moment, I am concentrating on trying to gain maximum points during the final round of the WikiCup and think that Gastropoda might take up too much of my time. That would be OK if it was successful at FAC by the end of October but that is a rather tight time frame.

Okay then, but I think you should try tunicate for FA sometime after the cup (or for the next cup).

Not an invertebrate, but would you be interested in Salamander for FAC? Theoretically, I am working jointly with Sasata on that article and have been through and improved large parts of it, but Sasata has not actually participated in improving it yet. WikiCup 2013 August newsletter

This year's final is upon us. Our final eight, in order of last round's score, are:

1. Hawkeye7 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer who has contributed on topics of military history and physics, including a number of high-importance topics. Good articles have made up the bulk of his points, but he has also scored a great deal of bonus points. He has the second highest score overall so far, with more than 3000 points accumulated.
2. Casliber (submissions), another WikiCup veteran who reached the finals in 2012, 2011 and 2010. He writes on a variety of topics including botany, mycology and astronomy, and has claimed the highest or joint highest number of featured articles every round so far this year. He has the third highest score overall, with just under 3000 points accumulated.
3. Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 WikiCup champion, who writes mostly on marine biology. She has also contributed to high-importance topics, seeing huge numbers of bonus points for high-importance featured and good articles. Previous rounds have seen her scoring the most bonus points, with scoring spread across did you knows, good articles and featured articles.
4. Sasata (submissions), a WikiCup veteran who finished in second place in 2012, and competed as early as 2009. He writes articles on biology, especially mycology, and has scored highly for a number of collaborations at featured article candidates.
5. Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), the winner of the 2010 competition. His contributions mostly concern Naval history, and he has scored a very large number of points for good articles and good article reviews in every round. He is the highest scorer overall this year, with over 3500 points in total.
6. Ealdgyth (submissions), who is competing in the WikiCup for the second time, though this will be her first time in the final. A regular at FAC, she is mostly interested in British medieval history, and has scored very highly for some top-importance featured articles on the topic.
7. Miyagawa (submissions), a finalist in 2012 and 2011. He writes on a broad variety of topics, with many of this year's points coming from good articles about Star Trek. Good articles make up the bulk of his points, and he had the most good articles back in round 2; he was also the highest scorer for DYK in rounds 1 and 2.
8. Adam Cuerden (submissions) has previously been involved with the WikiCup, but hasn't participated for a number of years. He scores mostly from restoration work leading to featured picture credits, but has also done some article writing and reviewing.

We say goodbye to eight great participants who did not qualify for the final: Piotrus (submissions), Figureskatingfan (submissions), ThaddeusB (submissions), Dana boomer (submissions), Status (submissions), Ed! (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), Calvin999 (submissions). Having made it to this stage is still an excellent achievement, and you can leave with your heads held high. We hope to see you all again next year. Signups are now open for the 2014 WikiCup, which will begin on 1 January. All Wikipedians, whatever their interest or level of experience, are warmly invited to participate in next year's competition.

This last month has seen some incredible contributions; for instance, Cwmhiraeth's Starfish and Ealdgyth's Battle of Hastings—two highly important, highly viewed pages—made it to featured article status. It would be all too easy to focus solely on these stunning achievements at the expense of those participants working in lower-scoring areas, when in fact all WikiCup participants are doing excellent work. A mention of everything done is impossible, but here are a few: Last round saw the completion of several good topics (on the 1958, 1959 and 1962 Atlantic hurricane seasons) to which 12george1 had contributed. Calvin999 saw "S&M" (song), on which he has been working for several years, through to featured article status on its tenth try. Figureskatingfan continued towards her goal of a broad featured/good topic on Maya Angelou, with two featured and four good articles. ThaddeusB contributed significantly to over 20 articles which appeared on the main page's "in the news" section. Adam Cuerden continued to restore a large number of historical images, resulting in over a dozen FP credits this round alone. The WikiCup is not just about top-importance featured articles, and the work of all of these users is worthy of commendation.

Hi, I think we have one last chance - now - to agree the issues or watch it go under. I'm quite aware of the feelings involved but basically we have to forget personal opinions and look at the text itself. I'm minded to agree that we split off sections as new articles, replacing them with summaries - I've written a draft one for Culture. I believe if we do that, positively and with enthusiasm, we will quickly reach agreement, and if not, we won't. I actually don't think it will harm the article any, and I suspect it won't take much effort, either - almost all the detailed work is done. Give it a go with me? OK, we'll go step by step. History is suggested for trimming, but actually it is already a short version of a lot of stuff, and most of the sub-articles exist (even if flaky). I've taken out about 2 kB of text - we're approaching halfway and it's getting trickier. How do you see us shortening the article some more? We seem to need about 2 more Cultures' worth. I think we should not reduce it further in an effort to get it below 60kb. Big subjects need big articles to be comprehensive. I have been looking at the list of featured articles. There are masses over 70kb and here are some that are over 100kb, and there are many more - BAE Systems, Alfred Russel Wallace, Zinc, Psilocybin, Grand Teton National Park, Tang Dynasty, Greater Manchester, Alzheimer's disease, Hungarian Revolution of 1956, Empire of Brazil, Alcohol laws of New Jersey, Mars, Speed of light, Star, Sun, Venus, Shakespeare authorship question, William Shakespeare, The Beatles, Henry I of England and Middle Ages, the largest I have found with 159kb. I think it is most unwise to argue as we require agreement. However, let's wait for a reply and act accordingly - the article is now close to the guideline which may perhaps be sufficient for agreement. Right, I think it's time to take stock. It seems the immediate risk of a split has been averted. However the latest news from the front today is - a continuing feeling that the Humans bit is too long, and a broad hint that more comments - a lot of them - are on the way, with the suggestion that responding to them will be tricky because each addition will make the article 1k longer so we'll constantly be pushing and shoving to save space each time, cramping our writing style. Guess you can see where this is leading, and I know how you feel about the article, so my apologies. Here goes. I've gone through the Humans section, and honestly (read it and try to make sense of the order of subsections) it's become a bit of a jumble. I suspect we have two ways ahead: try to make do and mend with each of the next hundred comments, squeeze them in, and keep doing a bit more pruning until the article more or less falls to bits; or, hive off the Humans section, leaving a summary section behind, and then there'll be a lot less to worry about in terms of comments, and a lot more room to play with for any additions. I've made a rough summary paragraph here, it needs polishing. If we go that way, we'll get a whole lot less backchat and perhaps we'll pull through. Of course the reply may be it's still not ready ('young') but that could happen whatever we do: we can at least get our reply in first, that we think the Humans bit is the 'youngest' part of the article so we've hived it off so it can progress to GA when it's ready for it, which should take a bit of the wind from the sails. FWIW, Snowman often reviews my bird FACs. He is a diligent and thorough reviewer who will go through articles very thoroughly. In the past he has not always then given an opinion, but in more recent reviews he has been more inclined to offer (sometimes qualified) support. It is unlikely that delegates will take any action to archive an article that is still under active review, and remember that it's not a vote. A few of my FAs have gone through despite an unresolved oppose, and you have three supports, which is the unwritten requirement for promotion.

With regard to length, you could ask a delegate, but I'm not aware of any maximum or minimum. Pinniped is 98k, even in its current slimmed down version. My inclination always is to sit tight and keep dealing with actionable comments. Short of belated outright opposes, you should be OK Jimfbleak - talk to me? 05:38, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm really excited about the prospect of a high-level general interest article like Sea becoming a featured article! I know, I wasn't able to support (nor oppose), and I do hope the discrepancy (between what most articles seem to mean when they link to "Sea" and what the article mainly concerns) is eventually resolved. But I wish all the best for the article, sincerely. Also, I notice that desert is a GAN, and I am very tempted to review... but "desert" is such a broad article with so many diverse facets that it's intimidating for me even to review (and I think other reviewers feel the same). Sea - to do

Hello again. The talk page now contains additional requests which appear pretty much mandated, and something close to a vote of support for the article's length. It seems we need to mention the diving depth record, which could go with a bit on commercial diving; and a bit on 'current research and exploration' (partly connected to diving). Not sure where these should go - research would make most sense under Oceanography, while the diving probably needs to be a new section under Humans as it's only partly to do with oil/extractive industry (e.g. is also military). Trouble in the desert, trouble in the sea...

I'm a bit shellshocked from seeing the tremendous difficulties you've been having at the desert and sea nominations. You've been working extremely hard, answering all sorts of objections and making speedy modifications as requested, without seeming to take any of the comments personally. I was going to review desert, but was waiting for the sea nomination to finish first... and now I see there are already two people reviewing that GAN.

I guess my question is, is there anything I can do to help? I know I can't fill in lots of sourced information, since my knowledge of the desert and the sea is quite limited. I don't suppose another GAN reviewer for desert would help, and though I thought of plowing into a full Sea review, that FAC has had over a dozen people offering comments and suggestions already! I'm not sure one more would help. What do you think? I really admire the attempt to bring such wide-topic articles into GA or FA status. Is there some way I can be of assistance? I've studied the criteria - it's 1200 displayed chars, not any number of words, so I've added a little bit, please check. Yes, the site referenced in Le Cailar mentions decapitation. I spent forty minutes trying to find a valid e-mail address for someone involved with that site, to tell them of their mistake. I was principally concerned because the article is at DYK at the moment and the hook I put forward mentioned "decapitated skulls", but I see someone has removed the word "decapitated" from the hook so that's not a problem. I removed the word "decapitated", because it makes no sense in that context. The only case where a head or skull could be decapitated is Zaphod Beeblebrox. If you mention a head or skull being decapitated, you are using the word incorrectly. When you sharpen a pencil, you produce pencil shavings, but you do not talk about "sharpened shavings". Only the pencil has been sharpened, by the removal of the shavings; similarly, only a body can be decapitated, by the removal of its head. A skull has nothing to decapitate. But I have to ask, how did it make DYK? It's obviously been expanded a good deal, (more than a "new" article might be expanded) but the criteria is set so that increasing a substantial article by substantially more doesn't seem to count. The criteria is given in multiples of the original. This is not a question of idle curiosity, since I quite often expand upon major generic articles (art and architecture) and don't bother to put them up for DYK, for this reason. @Chiswick Chap: Thanks for the tweaks! I sure damn hope it reads well -- I've got a habit of revisiting my articles often to refine the wording and referencing. Regarding the etymology, I'm afraid your suggestion is a deviation from standard aircraft-article convention -- we simply do not include such an section in our articles. Besides, apart from the link apart, there are no sources that detail the naming of the AV-8B. The most I can perhaps do is to link "Harrier" in the very first sentence to the Marsh Harrier, but even then, as I have said, there are no reliable sources that would back up the claim. I provided a source above, possibly reliable enough for a minor point. It should be possible to locate a badge or crest from the early RAF Harrier squadrons, also - I think they had the bird painted on a signboard at the airfield, if not on some of the early planes; not sure about the squadron badges, one has a hovering eagle! "Systems continued studying the design until the early 2000s, when it was abandoned." - Perhaps this should read "the project was abandoned."

"two intakes and four synchronized vectorable nozzles of which are located close to the turbine;"- Missing word.

".. increasing life-to-drag ratio." - "lift"?

"Italian Navy AV-8Bs are slated to be replaced by 15 (originally 22) F-35Bs, operating from the Cavour." - I'm not sure what tense this is supposed to be.

The first time you mention Lon Nordeen, you do not mention who he is but you do on the second.
