ROC article merge

edit

Greetings, I've replied to your opposition to the merge. Your concern is that the RoC article should not talk about 'historical' things except in historical forms, of which I agree with you. Which is why I had proposed it to be merged into BOTH the Republic of China and History of the Republic of China, where historical information is put into the historical sections and the modern parts put into the current state article. Non-free rationale for File:Wheeler-dryden.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Wheeler-dryden.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:01, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

The article Harry's Filters has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Procedural decline. You're not directly blocked, and the VPN won't be unblocked. Instructions on how to request IP block exemption are given at the link below. Huon (talk) 17:28, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

You could request IP block exemption, but that will only be granted in cases of particular need. A general desire for privacy is not considered sufficient. Huon (talk) 16:06, 13 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your answer, I will give this a try. Also, I was wondering, and I couldn't find information about this on Wikipedia, what is the reason for IP blocking registered users? Since I'm logged in and I don't have a history of vandalism, presumably it should be safe to unblock me regardless of the IP? Or am I missing something? Laurent (talk) 16:23, 13 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
The block is on the IP address and not on your account, with edits from registered accounts disabled too, and there's no technical way to unblock specific accounts which happen to use that IP address. All we can do at the IP block level is allow/disallow all registered accounts, and at the account level allow/disallow editing through all blocked IP addresses (via IP block exemption).

Although IP addresses for registered users are not publicly visible, they are recorded every time an edit is made, and they are frequently used when investigating socking, etc (those with CheckUser privilege can see them). Use of a VPN is one way in which vandals/trolls/socks can hide their real IP addresses, even from CheckUsers, when editing from throwaway registered accounts, and that's essentially why VPNs are blocked when found. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 16:39, 13 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

The relevant policy is WP:OPENPROXY; VPNs are considered anonymizing proxies. Huon (talk) 21:25, 13 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
