Home Run leaders

Usually, one would simply say "alphabetically" rather than "by letters of the alphabet". Wahkeenah 03:50, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

I didn't want to say "alphabetically" because then the article would seem to be about the home runs leaders in order alphabetically, as opposed to the leaders in home run of each letter. Croat Canuck 15:21, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

Aha! This is one of those "artificial" lists for amusement purposes, like listing every ballplayer with a name or nickname that's an animal, and calling it the "all-Zoo" team or some such: Walt "Moose" Moryn, Ryne "Ryno" Sandberg (intended to sound like "Rhino"), Joe "Ducky" Medwick, Tris "Gray Eagle" Speaker, etc. I can dig it. Somewhere I have a list that shows what I call "win patterns" in the post-season. I wonder if I should make a page out of that. Example: The Red Sox ALCS win over the Yankees last year, I call "aa hHH AA". Lost 2 "away", lost 1 "home", won 2 "Home", won 2 "Away". Obviously that's the first time that pattern ever has ever appeared. The most frequently occurring win pattern in a 7-game World Series, for example, is "aa HHH aA", which has occurred 4 times: 1955 BKN/NYY, 1956 NYY/BKN, 1965 LA/MIN, 1971 PIT/BAL d:) Wahkeenah 17:27, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

Hey CC. Scanning the Recent Changes list I saw your Home run leaders by letters of the alphabet and then noted your comment above re you not wanting alphabetical order but listing according to each letter. We're urged to assume "good faith", but I can't resist asking -- are you winding us up? I propose to move the article to Home run leaders in alphabetical order unless you can give a compelling reason why I shouldn't. Moriori 02:42, August 28, 2005 (UTC)

The article "Home run leaders by letters of the alphabet" shouldn't be changed into "alphabetical order" because the article isn't listing the home run leaders in alphabetical order. It is the top five home run leaders for each letter... I wish there was an easier and shorter way of making the title, but it is what it is. If it is changed to alphabetical order, it will be something that it is not. And I'm not trying to wind you up, I don't know where your coming from with that, but thats not what I'm trying to do. Expos????

OK, I can see you're a Torontoan (Torontoer? Torontoite?), so I can see why you put Jays-Spos on that funky rivalries page. But, here's the key, was this rivalry just as passionate to Móntrèáléràns? I know it's Canada v. Canada, and I'm not sure but I think Ontarioaners love sticking it to Quebeckerers, but were there even really enough Spos fans to make this a rivalry? Pardon my Francois, but I beleive if you can prove it from both POVs, it stays; if ya cain't, it leaves. (Oh man, I'm gonna get reamed for this.)--CrazyTalk 03:56, August 23, 2005 (UTC)

Of course I can only report this from the POV of an Ontarian (I've only been to Toronto about 25 times in my life), however I can tell you why it is an important rivalry. Montreal used to be a popular team, although it was always second place to the Canadiens in terms of popularity, it had a nice fan base before the players strike of 94. The reason the fans disappeared was because the 94 Expos were the best team the Expos ever had, and were poised to win the World Series, when the stike ruined the season, and then all the good players left to the bigger-money ballteams. How does this tie into the rivalry? Well the Jays sprung up in 1977, and in the 1980's both teams were good, not World Series calibre, and each had their own set of stars. But the Jays kept making it to the playoffs, unlike the Expos. The Jays were like the lil bro who was great at everything, and that added one point to the rivalry. The second point to the rivalry is when the Jays grabbed all of Canada's attention in 92 and 93 when they won the World Series, meanwhile Montreal was stuck in good-but-not-great town. Then Montreal had its 94 team, and were gonna show the Jays but they failed because of the strike. Then when Interleague play was introduced, it brought on the short-lived Canada Day Matchup. Whoever won the series was the best in Canada, and I can remember watching those games on TV and being thrilled by the Toronto-Montreal matchup. Even though it isn't anything of the calibre of a Maple Leafs-Canadiens rivalry, it still represented the same principles that made THAT rivalry so great: Red vs. Blue, French vs. English, Ontario vs. Quebec, and so on and so forth. The Expos-Blue Jays rivalry wasn't only a rivalry of the teams, but it was baseball's version of one of the biggest rivalry's on Earth. It gave Ontarians a reason to laugh at the Quebecois, because the Blue Jays were actually a better team than the Expos. I bet there are still a few Expos fans out there who are still green with envy over the Jays still having a franchise, and having Two World Series banners, as well as a retractable dome that actually WORKS. Actually, I think you more than justified a national rivalry and you should actually cut and paste the comments onto a new page and make that THE ARTICLE. (Wahkeenah had the same comment to your response on my talk page, too.) Once you get that article out there, I don't think anyone will disagree, but you might want to solicit an Expo POV, too. Canadian Spelling

Hey, Croat Canuck. I can see by your name you are emphasizing that you are a Canadian. I don't mean to be a nit-picky Canadian (or maybe I do), but you should try to use Canadian spelling. Americanization is enveloping Canada way too much, as shown by my lack of Canadian spelling and thus clearly delving into my sub-conscious. Maybe I read just too many American texts, or maybe I have just a feud with the "u" button on my keyboard. But I definitely agree with you, I should be much more, shall we say, Canuck-like in my spelling. And if I do not spell in Canadian English, then therefore I am a no good Shatner-stealing Mexico-toucher (to steal a line from The Simpsons, an American show}. And Canada will most certainly turn into America if we all start dropping the "u"'s and flipping around the "e" and the "r" in "centre". So we must most definitely resist this and keep our country as different from America as possible. After all, Canada is my favorite country. Fixed stub problem

List of every NHL player

Hello Croat Canuck. I am wondering, when you fix links to hockey players, do you also fix the link here List of every NHL player? That is the master list of players and that one is very important to keep updated. It is almost 100% accurate. It is missing some rookies from this year and some rookies from the 2003-04 NHL season, but it is almost complete. I have been really busy with the List of NHL seasons lately and haven't had time to add all the new rookies yet. Masterhatch 04:37, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

Atlas-style!

Hey, good work on all the NHL-bios. I've been on this subject for a while, mostly trying to get Edmonton Oilers biographies into Wikipedia. If you get bored/sick of/overwhelmed with trying to get every bio on Wikipedia, might I suggest focusing on List of Toronto Maple Leafs players? Not that I want to discourage you, because the more bios we get, the better, but I personally find it easier to focus on teams I'm actually interested in. Hey, long time, no chat. :P I just wanted to followup on the Spokanites category issue you were concerned with awhile back. If you check out this you'll see that one of the arbitrators believes location categories are only a guide. NHL Trophies

Good idea about adding the new cats. BUT remember one thing, you won't be a wikipedian forever! What I mean is, when you are gone (for whatever reason), will what you do be easy to follow for others? Are you creating a lot of work in upkeep? The more work in upkeep you create, the easier it is for everything to fall apart. Thanks for the vote of confidence but I am not sure that I want to be an administrator at this time. It would be a great honour, but lately I don't have the time to put into Wikipedia. A couple of months ago I was editing over 50 articles a day with well over 400 pages on my watch list. Now I have narrowed that down to just over 200 pages and I usually make less than 10 edits a day and those 10 edits are usually just a simple revert of vandalism. I still have quite the to-do list and when my schedule permits, i will get back to my to-do list and maybe then I will think about your nomination. Thank you. I did vote for you, though. OHL teams

Actually, the article should be where a team's history is presented; it's not really the category's job to provide that kind of information. For one thing, the category doesn't really explain why the subcategories are filed there, and for another, there's already an established practice for sports teams: when a team moves to a new city and adopts a new name, it's treated as a new team, not as an extension of the old one. We just can't really treat OHL teams differently than we treat NHL or NFL or MLB teams. Bearcat 23:02, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
