Pitt national championships

The line removed that stated that it should be noted that the champions were named retroscpectively or claimed by other schools is true to some extent, but not all non-AP titles and this line served to do nothing more than demean Pitt's exisiting 9 titles. It is not really noteworthy due to the fact there are many shared titles and none of them, even today's, are official because the NCAA does not recognize or reward national titles in Division 1A football. In fact, internet research of football from those years, including the Pitt digital archive, shows that Pitt was recognized as the best in the nation during many of those years despite there not being a yearly National Championship awarding body (such as the AP and UPI became). So, Pitt's claim may come from retrospective sources compiled by a 1970 Sports Illustrated study, but it was considered the best team in the nation during those years (with the exception of 1934 which could easily be swapped for the non-Pitt-claimed but generally recognized title of 1910 to maintain a total of 9 championship seasons.). The other line removed, that Pitt claims titles from other sources like the 80 and 81 computer polls, is simply not true. Pitt makes no claims to those titles.

Barco Law Building

I guess I always assumed it was concrete, but come to think of it I guess I'm not entirely sure. I've removed the offending clause from the article, keeping only the part about it being an example of Brutalist architecture, which it certainly is. If the highest ranks were reliable, I would have no problem putting them in. There just seemed so little that I wasn't sure if it was accurate. As for the titles, as you can see, I just went with the one's that the other guy had there, I think they were just the one's Pitt claims. I initially thought I would differentiate between different sources that gave Pitt the championship, but realized I had no clue what some of them were (Montgomery, Libby, etc.) I made sure to note which were consensus, but other than that, I really didn't know what to use. Pitt basketball

Now I'm working on the basketball seasons, and it's actually pretty difficult. I'm linking to the tournaments each year, as well as the other teams. I'll keep working on it, but won't put it up until after the end of the tournament, with hopefully a National Championship (Bob Knight thinks so). Check it out, here. • I am glad that my views could help your College from being deleted. I firmly believe that a a double-standard is currently being applied to some select institutions on Wikipedia. The Ivy League institutions are allowed every leeway in the book, whereas the Major Research Universities get judged far more harsly then these other highly prestigious institutions. This is not only grossly unfair, but it is also undemocratic taboot. I pledge to defend all Major Research Universities, and they deserve the same playing field as the Ivy League schools.

Pitt falcolns

Hey, I'm considering creating an article for the falcons in the Cathedral. They'll receive national recognition when the Cathedral appears on John Ratzenberger's Made in America on the Travel Channel. I'm gonna do some research when I get around to it. Oakland zoo

The wording may have been a joke, but the bias ends there (otherwise I'd want all Pitt and Penn State articles everywhere speedied). I will otherwise be objective about why I endorse the article the way I do. The papers may be major, but they're still Pittsburgh papers covering Pittsburgh stories, the same as any other local paper covers the local university.

You're welcome to nominate other student sections for AfD, but you'd better be real sure that the articles don't pass notability or sourcing guidelines first. You don't want to be hit with accusations of WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS or WP:POINT because the Zoo article is in AfD. Don't let them think you're nominating out of spite. Keep it strictly business. Nationality Rooms

I may be able to help flesh out this page... I started the Cathedral of Learning page back in 2004, and am a former guide for the Nat Rooms, plus I'll be back in Pgh for five weeks this summer. So let's see here. On the simple items - I wouldn't start a wikireader (a thing from years ago basically putting a bunch of articles from one topic in a pdf to be printed out in little book form - think a 90 page little thing on Pitt to hand out to people made from WP articles), until a to-do list had been made and worked on. This is why I was asking about the wikiproject - if there is one, I'd def be involved. That being said, I'm in grad school in DC (I'm from Philly as well - Bucks County, but went to undergrad at Pitt), so I can only do a bit at a time around schoolwork. I'd love to be involved if you start it. In terms of the list of what you have to do, I've already got some ideas for a couple, and will be at Pitt for 5 weeks doing a summer language institute, so I may be able to get some pictures going of things that still need them. If we can get a wikiproject going, get a to-do list going, and get a list of articles to work towards good and featured status, I'll hopefully be much more useful then. Pictures

Sure, I enjoy taking pictures, and I will often just snap one whenever I happen to see something interesting. Especially all the artwork hanging around Pitt.

Are there any buildings around Pitt that still need an outside shot? Do you think that inside shots (maybe of the lobby or typical classroom) add much to an building article? I tried to take a few classrooms pics, but they looked terrible. Any Oakland or other Pittsburgh landmarks that need pictures? I'm relatively new to wikipedia, so I'm not sure where there is a lack of coverage.

On another note, what do you think of starting a Pitt wikiproject? I have no idea what that would entail, but I see lots of school have one. --Shizzy9989 (talk) 19:50, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

I definitely agree with your thoughts on keeping the Pitt photos appealing. I have a mid-grade camera, and I'm still trying to learn the different controls, so I hope my pictures get better...Let me know if there's some that work especially well, or some that could be re-shot. I'd like to nominate some for good photo designation.

I'll try to get some better outside shots of buildings once the trees have leaves. Maybe I'll even try to replicate/replace some of the photos that are already on the pages. (Editorial comment: I think the Hillman/Barco/Posvar/Lawrence/Towers buildings are hideously designed. They look fascist to me.) I'm relatively new to the area, so if you want to keep a list of things that could use pictures, I can just hop on my bike and take a bunch at once. I'll hit up the Cathedral for the nationality rooms, too. Also, if there's a professional photo you want me to mimic, just send me a link to it, and I'll see what I can do.

I'll definitely help out with a Wikiproject for Pitt. I don't know enough to take the lead on it, but I'll help out.

Your question regarding the number of schools.

We do have 17 schools, and the CBA and Katz graduate school are separate. I looked into and found that Falk School was listed in the template but not on the University page. Turns out it is a k-8 school, and not part of the University of Pittsburgh. Superbowlbound (talk) 21:44, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

College games at PNC Park

Hey, thanks for the links. I'm working on a rough draft in my sandbox. I was wondering if you knew about any other high school or college games played there. I would be suprised if there have not been, I know Heinz Field has hosted high school games, but I don't really know where to look. Any info you (or any other Pittsburgher on here) have would be helpful, because at this point four college games is interesting, but not really that note-worthy; I have a peer review set up for the article (which should happen sometime this weekend) I could ask him what he thinks after he's done his thing. Nationality rooms

I know that Quo Vadis, the tour guides, are taught that at least the French room does not fit this role - it is actually modeled after a style after the 1789 date. That being said, I'm drawing this again from materials I don't have with me, and my memory of being a tour guide (yea, still tracking those down, damnit. Dude, Chill, it's a common story told at the Cathedral, but if it's not true, it's not true, and it's good to get it out of there! I'm not insulted, hurt, upset, or anything else. I just wanted to ensure that my memory of it (and giving the story on tours), was not actually based on something. As all of my books don't mention it, it's out, and that's fine! Heh. It's completely cool. It's done, it's fixed, and Wikipedia has been copied so many times, with so many mistakes - you do what you can. We can't deal with people reporting sloppily, just make sure our own stuff is accurate. Sorry I haven't been around much to be working on things, but I'm glad to tie up this loose end. Pictures?

Hello. I found a few pictures from a while back that might be useful for the List of Pitt Buildings. Hey, May I have your aesthetic opinion on something? I find myself taking pictures of historical markers and plaques when I am out taking photos. They help me remember what I just took a picture of, and they often provide a good source of basic information if the article is lacking. But my question is: Do you think they are generally worthy of placement in the article itself? An example: Would these add or detract to the Roberto Clemente Bridge article: Image:RobertoClementePoem.JPG & Image:RobertoClementeHistoricalMarker.JPG.

I went to the Cathedral this weekend to try and get some pictures of some of the nationality rooms, and they were locked. I'm not sure what the availability during the summer is--but I'll try again during the week. I'll also try and get some shots of some more of the buildings without photos. (I replaced the RAND building photo on the list of pitt buildings.) If there are any good professional shots of the pitt buildings, maybe send me the link and I can try and reproduce them. I have some pictures in my camera that I haven't uploaded yet, so I'll try to do that in a few days.

Also, I went looking for 2 of the Cantini murals that were supposedly downtown. 1 (in the Oliver building) is behind the security guard's desk, and any photo will be worthless. I don't think there is one in the USX tower. The best I could find was this crummy mural in the basement: [1]. It is definitely not cantini and not worth putting on wikipedia--no offense to the painter. I added some more photos to the list of Pitt buildings. I am at a loss to get a good exterior shot of Trees Hall (but I'll try to get inside some time). I have about another 15 pictures of various Pitt buildings to add later. Uploading those is a pain. Maybe it would be a good thing to get a requested photo list going for the WP:PITT. Maybe something like this:

• Turkish Nationality Room
• Swedish Nationality Room
• Trees Pool
• Ground-floor shot of the Peterson basketball court
• Towers gyms
• Towers dorms (showing the oddly angled walls), etc.

Feel free to photoshop any of my photos. I am not sure what is going on with some of those shots where the sky seems all white and fuzzy. Possibly a result of Pittsburgh's famous overcast weather. Trees

Great work on the Trees Hall page! I'll get you a good photo yet.

About the Dippy photos, some guy on the commons was having a fit and deleting all the Dinosaur statue photos. Technically, he may be right--statues and sculpture are not covered by the "Freedom of Panorama" that allows us to photograph buildings, trees, animals, and whatnot. The reason is that statues and sculptures are works of human creativity and just because they're outside, the author doesn't cede his right to it. So, I just emailed the press guy for the Carnegie for a GDFL release on the Dippy photo, then I sent it to OTRS. This process is kind of confusing, and if you want, I can elaborate. Now, I do believe that we'd have a good chance at protecting the Cantinis or panther statues with a well-written Fair Use Rationale. You have to figure that a 2D jpg photo of a statue is not going to harm the copyright holder's right over the 3D sculpture; and that such a photo is the subject of critical commentary. However, the guy deleting all the dinosaurs was on a rampage, so I figured he'd get fussy with any fair use rationale for the statues. --TheZachMorrisExperience (talk) 17:41, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Know anything about the Carrillo Street Steam Plant? I checked on Carrillo Street behind Trees, and there's nothing but an empty lot. Couldn't find anything that on google satellite either.

I might be able to nail the last of the photos before school starts back. I think we need to get the missing nationality rooms listed--since there will probably be some students who can do those, since I may not have time by then. Maybe 1 "detail" shot from the nationality room for the infobox and one big shot of the room? I think the Israel room is a good example of that. Heinz Field

I was re-writing the Heinz Field article and noticed that I don't have too many sources about Pitt's involvment, especially in the funding area which I assume they contribe something to. I figured you might have a source somewhere since you seem to be a Pitt expert on WP. If not that's fine, I'll just keep looking something is sure to pop up. Also, I was uploading some pictures from Flickr to the Commons the other day and happend to upload this one, I don't know where it is but hopefully it can be put to use somewhere. Got a real minor question, there's still a piece of the outfield fence of Forbes Field standing. I have a book that says it's outside the U of Pitt library. St.Peter's

Thank you for the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Category. I helped get the chuch the landmark plaque, and had lots of fun discussing this with Jamie Trump. Pustelnik (talk) 23:42, 5 August 2008 (UTC) St. Peter's Episcopal Church (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is not still standing. I left Pittsburgh after the landmark plaque. I understand that there were several fires, either in the church or in the rectory. I'm not sure if these were the reason for it being demolished, though. It was an impressive building, and the tower/spire was a superb piece of stonework. There was a local Oakland weekly newspaper, and I read several articles in its archives about the church in the 1920's. Cantini Photos

Yeah, so most of our Cantini stuff is liable to be deleted unless we get it in line with Wikipedia:Non-free content, since they're all pictures of art. I'm in the process of doing this and it might mess up some Pitt articles for a bit. Once we get this aligned, maybe we can reorganize them. The crummiest part of this is that none of this can be used in a "gallery." This isn't being paranoid either, someone is already eyeing up those pictures. We could try to get his permission--but I doubt it. He has no webpage and doesn't even sell his wares any more. I have no idea how to even contact him.

I can try to see if Pitt will release them as derivative works, but I'm not sure if they or VC has the copyright. I have been talking to an admin who is also a lawyer, and he has yet to get back to me on a few other questions, so I'll ask him that too. • I don't know if you saw this, but someone on Commons deleted a photo of the Honus Wagner statue. Forbes Field and other venues

I've completed initial work on Forbes Field. I you have anything to add please feel free to do so. I have more info to add eventually, but it reached the point where it was worthy of the mainspace. I think I have enough to make it an FA someday, along with PNC Park (I think I'm gonna nominate that one soon). If possible I would like to finish up the rest of the stadiums used by the Steelers and Pirates, and while I'm at it I might as well do Pitt football as all three have overlapped multiple times. I'll probably do Exposition Park next, but then Pitt Stadium and Mellon Arena (although those two seem to have limited sources from my small research). I don't have "a bug up my butt" about about journals in general, or this one in particular. I do, however, care about notability, which is why I look at unpatrolled articles, starting from the earliest. Starting with the earliest unpatrolled articles (which are a month old using the default view) allows new articles a chance to be improved for a month before I make an attempt to asses their notability.

While there is an RfD active on the matter, as of now, WP:N is not superseded by any subject-specific guidelines, let alone the so-called consensus of the contributors to a particular project. Moreover, the project page WP:WikiProject Academic Journals doesn't have any comments on the applicability of WP:N, and the talk page of the project doesn't appear to come to a consensus, despite a lot of discussion on the matter.

It is simply false to say that all journals are notable. If the guideline is ultimately adopted that every journal gets an exemption from WP:N in order to provide color for any other articles that references that journal as a source, I'll refrain from commenting on the notability of journals. In the meantime, if my concern about notability motivates you and HoboJones to improve articles, it seems like a good result to me. Bongomatic (talk) 06:58, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

That is clearly been the standing consensus of Wikipedia:WikiProject Academic Journals whether you agree with it or not. I have not found an instance of an academic, peer-reviewed, indexed journal failing AFD. "Journals" that do not meet this criteria have failed AFD. Did you get my email? Are you willing to be the contact guy between WP:PITT and them? I figure that one person dealing with them will be the best way to go.

We should consider asking if they have access to the missing information at Pitt buildings. Also, maybe they can get us a picture of the locked "Babcock Room" at the Cathedral. Maybe some GFDL releases on some of the professional photos of the common room of the Cathedral? (I can't get any pictures to look very good). Maybe they could release photos of Category:University of Pittsburgh faculty, Category:University of Pittsburgh faculty, Category:Chancellors of the University of Pittsburgh.
