I am trying to create a wiki for my company, Gentle Giant Moving Co., Inc. As an employee of this company, I have been given explicit permission to use information from our website on the wikipedia page, so long as it is encyclopedic and not spam. I am getting an error that CorenSearchBot is finding that some of the wiki has been plagarized from the Gentle Giant website. While I have used information from the website, I have been given explicit permission to do so from the creators and maintainers of the website. Please send me a message if this is a problem. Thanks. Image permissions

Hi Coren. I have recently had permission to use some images from the Geological Survey of Canada website here and elsewhere made by scientists named Catherine Hickson and Melanie Kelman (which are copyrighted on the GSC website and elsewhere) and they said I can use them without a problem and I have permission to use them on Wikipedia. Please see this. I don't understand why you unblocked Tajik, he has been insulting Afghans, Afghanistan, Pashtun, Pashto speakers, and spreading extreme Persian POVs, vandalising all Afghanistan related articles, and creating sockpuppets. Many of his sockpuppets were added as User:Beh-nam's socks because they both used the socks and shared passwords. Please indef ban him again because he will never stop his bad behaviour. However, it's possible the bot will still raise a red flag, due to the simple fact that many of his books have very long titles and listing them gives the appearance that material has been copied. Likewise with lists of schools or people.

I've received a message telling me about copyright violation in new GLBasic Article, as the bot detected it share a lot of text from http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/GLBASIC which is where I copied the article from before some editing.

That website articles are licensed under GNU Free Documentation License which permits using it this way. Hence I removed the tag. However, I left this note here following the bot message direction.

Unblocking PatPeter

May I ask why you unblocked PatPeter without even notifying the blocking admin, without waiting for some kind of consensus to form? I recall there being similar issues when you unblocked Kurt Weber recently. Just curious... Aunt Entropy (talk) 05:33, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Because blocks aren't punitive, they're preventative. In both cases, the immediate cause of the block was alleviated (Kurt chose to stay away from project space, PatPeter stated being willing to concentrate on mainspace and has stopped socking). All users need to be given the opportunity to return productively, or, in the alternative, be given enough rope to hang themselves— it takes little effort or time to see which it ends up being.

As for the blocking admin, both cases are completely unrelated: in one case the block was brought to community review immediately, and in the other case it was an appeal to a very old block from an admin who is nowadays mostly active on commons. — Coren ^(talk) 12:47, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

One of the advantages of not having many supporters at your RFA is that there are fewer people to thank at the end. Thanks for your support and your willingness to look at my complete record. I'm going to try to interpret this resounding defeat as a statement that I should choose my words more carefully in the future, and remember that every statement I make gets recorded forever, just waiting to get carefully transcribed onto my next RFA. I would go insane if I believed that it was repudiation of what I truly meant: that no editor should consciously and willfully ignore guidelines and policies, and editors that repeatedly do so should not be rewarded for or supported in doing so.

I just happened to see CorenSearchBot's message about Foot orienteering being a copy of http://www.ppgracing.pl/?title=Orienteering, and clicked on the link. It leads to what is apparently a live mirroring site, powered by something called "Wikipedia Reflection Script", located here. Most of the information obtained is from the official citation from the Army, which can not be changed. Any other information may be different, but not the citation. And because this is from the Civil War years, there is not much info anywhere else but the official one from the archives of the army. Copyright issue

The problem seems to occur with the bands bio which appears on a forum posted by the band. I got the bio from their site (the same bio with the forum) and I got Bands permision for that. If necessary I can forward an email from the band.

You can also pull his picture and add it to the article. You can find it on both websites. In the Wing website, he's in the Public Affairs" section, and on the Squadron site, he's the commander, but you would know that if you read my article.

Not trivially; CSBot relies on search engine ranking to find likely candidates for source material, and the Wikipedias in languages other than a handful (English, French and German) tend to pop up rarely, if ever, on those searches. It might be possible to do so by tweaking what search queries are made, but I'd need a sample set to do so; do you have a few examples I can examine? — Coren ^(talk) 12:25, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

You could take a look at the current nominees at WP:PNT. Sometimes an editor will copy and paste something from a foreign-language Wikipedia and translate only the title, expecting us to do the rest. Sometimes, they won't even bother to translate the title either. A common occurrence is an article with a title written in the Latin alphabet, leaving no doubt that the article is biographical, yet the rest is written in a foreign writing system (most commonly Arabic or Chinese). It should be noted that about half of the pages that get listed on PNT end up being speedied on grounds other than A2. One current nomination, for an article in Hebrew, contains a note that an article with the same title has been deleted twice from the Hebrew Wikipedia, though because we don't understand the language we cannot tell whether this was a speedy or some other process. -- Blanchardb -^{Me•MyEars•MyMouth}- timed 00:34, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

IFD

I haven't got a problem with people giving reasoned ideas to keep the image (see my reply to MivkMacNee, who I've had lots of run-ins with in the past) but I do have a serious problem with an admin who is closely involved with those articles trying to dismiss policy purely for that reason - I know NFCC is disputed, but some parts of it are solid and this image fails them. I can't make any apologies for being aggressive here - if this IFD results in a Keep, we might as well throw our image policies in the bin, because every time fair-use overuse is challenged, people will point to this IFD as precedent. invitation

Actually, the invitation was quite sincere. It was just that after I saw your follow on comment, I realized it was extremely unlikely you would ever consider doing that. Further, I'm not interested in arguing, with yet another user, why fair use must be limited per Foundation dictum. It's just not worth time and effort, because all it has yielded is an extremely polarized community between those who get it (like User:Angr) and those who don't. I'm not saying you don't per se, just that we disagree on level. The simple fact is, the goal of being a free content encyclopedia has been lost. With the possible exception of Flickr, we are the world's largest repository of non-free content. Certainly we are the world's largest if we ignore sites that have no focus on their content (i.e., random content throughout, like Flickr). That we have lost doesn't motivate me to jump on the fair-use-is-legal-therefore-its-ok bandwagon, and start pumping my fist in the air every time someone uploads yet another fair use image. I can and will fight to the maximum of my time and ability the continued erosion of the free content status of this resource.

My invitation was sincere, I can assure you. I would love nothing more than to work with a group of fair use loving users to produce a well thought out proposal to be put forth to the Foundation as to why their incredibly inclusive stance on fair use is the proper method of making a truly great encyclopedia. The Foundation will no doubt rather loudly and firmly tell them they are in error. Maybe then this dispute will finally end. As it stands now, I stand strongly by the stance voiced in the second userbox from the top on my userpage.

It's not necessary for you to respond. I know you firmly disagree with my stance as to level of fair use acceptance. To be frank, there's no way in hell you can change my stance on inclusiveness of fair use above Foundation standards. And no, I'm sorry, I don't by the gibberish people (not saying you) frequently spout that it's all open to interpretation and therefore everyone is right. But, if you are willing to put together a work group to make a proposal to the Foundation to liberally allow fair use, feel free to contact me. As you can see in a current peer-review, articles with hundreds of overwikified words need a handy de-wikify template in order to show, as a hatnote tag, that there's a problem with an article.

I wonder if there's a plan to create a "de-wikify" template?

Kantamani marked as similar to Yagapriya

These are musical scales in Carnatic music. These are parent scales (melakarta per Carnatic music terminology) which are superficially similar, including in scientific notation, but are quite different in the musical aspect. They are quite important in this music and warrant separate pages which will be expanded further in due course of time. block aftermath

Although I feel miffed that FP managed to get me blocked yet again... there was no point further appealing the block. I've been here long enough to realize in most situations admins unaware of our "history" are going to take the easiest course to resolution.

I just want to state for the record in case I am the target of attack on the noticeboard by FP again (who incidentally yet again found a reason to squeeze my name in... for an incident on my talkpage that I had absolutely nothing to do with)... I still believe my comments with regards to FP being in a COI (on several fronts). Again... he made no attempt to disclose a possible COI to noticeboard... no mention of our history... no mention of my prior discussions with other admins.

Cusco pages

Hi there. Many of the pages for Cusco albums have been created long ago under various longwinded or inaccurate titles. Rather than simply deleting out all the old entries, I created redirects to the new pages. I could possibly just delete the unnecessary pages by now, but there are still links to be found which lead to these, and it seems to me that a redirect is better than leaving the surfer stranded. I've replaced this entry with Steve Green (journalist), which is the way he describes himself. (What is a "science fiction" activist"?). If you can place a redirect on the redundant page, that would be great.
