Re: James Kerr ->Jim Kerr

• Please see The James Kerr Project: sorting out a half dozen people, all with links to the same article for more info.

This is where people who have an interest in the James Kerr stub can discuss my proposal to redirect it to Jim Kerr.

Short story: there is another James Kerr, a figure in the 1800s, whose reference accidentally linked to the modern James Kerr stub. Since the Simple Minds page refers to him as "Jim Kerr" I tried that article and found a lot of good info on him. Since the James Kerr article has less (very little in fact), I propose we send people to the Jim Kerr article instead. The article on 1800s James Kerr is now started at James Kerr (Texas) for lack of a better name. I'm sure with a name like James, that the plain James Kerr page should be a disambig. page.

So I'm willing to use the "what links here tool" to go back and change the links from James Kerr to Jim Kerr, and have the James Kerr page redirect to James Kerr (disambiguation).Ckamaeleon 00:59, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Columbine SpokenWiki Discussion

I'd love it if you could take up the article! I requested it on September 22nd, and after three months of waiting, on Dec. 22nd, I told myself that if no one took it up, I'd just remove the request and gave it a month, so on Jan 22nd, I would've removed the request for it. I'll give you any feedback you need, and I do think it'd be ok for subdivision since it takes 20+ minutes to read the entire thing; I'm sure that'd be too big of an .ogg file. Thanks for taking it up, if you want, you can e-mail me the file, or just send me an e-mail and i'll give you my AIM or MSN name (I don't wanna post any of that on this talk page cause then anyone can just use it; use the e-mail feature on wikipedia to contact me). • Well, I listened to your take on nucular, and I like it. I can hear the feedback you told me about, it kicked in about 10-15 seconds into the recording (just thought I'd let you know). Also, you sound a bit nervous at the beginning, but you ease into it real well, I notice this by the fact that your sh and ch sounds (including endings like -tion, that sound like sh/ch) tend to run together with the vowels in the beginning, that's usually what people do when they're tense or nervous, but it's not a bad thing since I hear that all the time on spoken article recordings. I had linux for a while, first knoppix, of course, then I took on mandrake under supervision of a friend, but it refused to mount my hard drive! We tried another one, but then it mounted the drive and refused to recognize my internet connection and monitor (it gave me crappy resolution and 16 colors only)... ARGH, I finally gave up and gave in to Windows... oh well. Also, now I have LILO stuck on my boot sector, and occasionally it gives me that annoying L 99 99 99 99 99... error that's a pain in the ass to remove. Recently, my removal method failed!!! (I guess after the 6th time at it, it broke) Luckily, I have 2 hard drives and just installed it onto my other drive, but what will I do when that other drive fails!? Hey, thanks for the info. I tried the fdisk / mbr option that the guide says a while back, had to be more than a year infact, but it turns out my copy of Windows XP is not legit (someone gave me this computer after they bought a brand new one since my old one was from 1998). It required an administrator password and we tried every password imaginable and looked everything up online but nothing worked. I also took the test to find the right distro for me, and i suggested Madriva (ex. Mandrake) which is the one I used to have that didn't wanna recognize my monitor or internet connection (incompatible network card and video card, apparently). It also suggested SUSe which was another one my friend told me about, but I told her that after going through three failed distros, it'd be better just to let go. How's the spoken wiki going along? Actually, it isn't exactly being heavily revised... the article has remained basically the same since it was featured with a few small, and one major addition, most of the edits you see there and all revertions of vandalism, as vandals seem to enjoy thid topic a lot. In fact, from about Thanksgiving to just recently (about a week ago), the article went down to about 10 edits per week, something rare for this popular topic, since most of the information available on the shooting is already covered. If there were to be any revisions, it would most likely be due to grammar, spelling, wording, etc. but the information would still remain the same and that's what counts really. -- PRueda29 / ^Ptalk29 / ^Pcontribs29 22:23, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Article Length

As noted above, I had originally divided this article into three parts. However, it may be necessary to further divide it. This is the place to discuss that. Some thoughts:

1. Because I don't call out subsection numbers (so no "Section 3.1: Causes of Cancer", just "Causes of Cancer"), it's easiest to subdivide along full sections. But this article has long sections, specifically the areas where we follow the course of events on April 20. I really don't want to start the listener in the middle of any action, even less if they don't get a numbered section heading called out. Ckamaeleon 14:50, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ck - responding to your request on the Sp Articles page, I just listened to your recording. It is practically impossible to do a /klj/ cluster without stickin' in a schwa after it, so there ain't much I kin say, 'cept I agree you've probly done the best you can with that. Only thing I would say is that the rendering of [kjəl(ə)r] at the end of the line 3 needs the [j] part to be a tad clearer. Overall though, good job! I like your rendering of the Family Guy bit! Noise Removal effect

Re: Your message with regard to dates on my spoken wiki files

Hiya Ckameleon. I got your message from my talk page concerning the date appendages. The dates are not the dates the files were recorded - they are the dates the text revision is taken from. I am only using those date attachments to keep a note on my local machine so when I do a new revision, I can keep the files in order.

I always delete after recording the new revisions of any speech file, and then from the date code, I see which is the oldest, and shift that. I only delete the old ones once I know that the new file is valid and working.

I know it makes the file names hard to read, but it makes my life a thousand times easier! If you want me to, I will find some other way of doing it...

Moving convo here

You could always take Southwest from LIT to SAT, it only stops once and you can go via DAL. WN usually only has 30 minute stopovers, so you won't even have to get off the plane (maybe). Also, they only fly 737s, so no props to worry about. I have lived pretty close to MIA my whole life, though I haven't flown much. Only about five times, and most were short flights and two were done when I was too young to realize it. I'm often very proud of the fact I've flown PanAm from Houston to Miami (back when I was 5). All my aviation friends get jealous of that because very few of them got to fly the famous PanAm, and I have the boarding passes to prove I did (not that they don't believe me). I changed my username mostly because in December, someone vandalised my talkpage, the vandal turned out to have an I.P. registered in the same city I live in, which means they most likely knew me. I later found out who it was, and that they had been watching my edits and activity on here and then making fun of me with it. When I found this out, I first just ignored it, but it has bugged me ever since. I looked into changing a screename and since I have less than 6,800 edits, I decided to do it. Back to aviation. I'm studying to become a pilot, and want to work probably with Continental, since I like them a lot, but American and Delta are great too. I also like United, but they're in so much trouble I'm keeping them on the side, I dislike NW, but I mostly hate Southwest. Don't ask me why though, unless you want my reply to become its own talkpage archive. I live close enough to MIA that I can spend my afternoon watching all the huge European Jumbos departing. I used to live so close that I was only one block away from Runway 09R/27L which later become 08R/26L when 08L/26R was built. I remember that two days after the smaller runway opened, I was able to see an American Eagle ATR72 take off and turn north quickly followed by an American A300, the site of both of them taking off almost together was awesome, and I wish I had a camera at that time, but I didn't. Name pronounciation

What are the names? I haven't been able to really find any place where their names are pronounced exactly, but I know how to pronounce most of them (including injured students) just from listening to media when doing the research, and from everyday talk. The only one I'm sure I don't know is Curnow.. • Cassie Bernall BurNALL?? (Pretty Popular one)

A lot of these seem to be Germanic. That doesn't really surprise me too much. I'm from Central TX, where we have pockets of Czech and German-founded towns with old families that have names like that. But a lot of people have anglisized their family names over the years, so you still have to find out how they say it. Ten out of sixteen ain't bad. ;o).

I'll probably have to re-record any line that has a name that I botched. Like I said, I did a few of them with multiple takes, so I can edit out the "wrong" ones. This article is going to be over an hour long altogether, so I figure it's worth doing a good job. I really wanted to have it finished this past weekend, I'm back at home now and have the cheap-o mic so I'll have to do the names over this coming weekend, but I can edit out "flubs" this week. It's been so long since I've heard "klebold" pronounced that I couldn't remember. It's kind of funny, since the word "columbine" is all you need to say, I don't think anyone has mentioned the shooters' names since it happened. Ckamaeleon 22:12, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

I wanna try my hand at Spoken Wikipedia

Any suggestions before I head in? I've read Wikipedia:Media, Wikipedia:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia/Recording guidelines, and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia as suggested on the main project page, but was curious if there was anything else I should know before starting. Sweet! I'm going to go listen to it now. The Jan 21st revision is fine, since there haven't really been any major changes to the article (it's become pretty stable with the exception of a lot of vandalism, luckily, it's just people adding poop and penis, and not pushing points of view!!!). I'll go listen to part 1 now and come back with some feedback, hopefully my speakers won't give out on me (they failed last week because of a short circuit, getting a new computer with my tax return though). Hey, just wanted to let you know that I recently expanded the paragraph about the exachange with Bernall just a tiny little bit. I needed to clarify that the few students who still say the Bernall exchange took place did not witness the event occur, but rather heard it and that it could've mislead them since an exchange did occur with a surviving student. Spoken Wikipedia on The West Wing

I am actually intending to rerecord the entire thing. The existing recording isn't done well at all; there are name mispronunciations, extraneous noises, and it certainly doesn't help that I did the whole thing in one sitting. However, this article has since then gone through enormous change, and I'd like to just redo the entire thing. I've been up there quite a while, but I intend on getting to it one of these days! - In response to your message on my talk page...thanks for all the help. Your comments are extraordinarily useful. I use Audacity, and I'll jam my gain levels up. I've been compressing and normalizing the files, but I hear ya on the overprocessing thing. I might try and get away with not even using noise removal...I've found it makes things too glassy-sounding, even when the slider is all the way to the left.

Communiqué from Frenchieland

Again, great idea on the French stuff. Sweet mother, I can see I'm going to get none of my schoolwork done this semester....do you think the University would mind if I just gave all my Composition students A's for the semester and canceled class until May?

I was in Bretagne with a guy named Chris, who spent a year in Besancon! He loved it there. Unfortunately, he was placed in Quimperlé, which must not have been to his liking, since he ended up leaving early.

I looked up the article on Phèdre on the French Wikipédia, and it's not that much more expansive, which was surprising. In fact, the English version of the article appears to be primarily a translation from the French one. (My thesis is on Phèdre, so I definitely have stuff to add before I record it. I just have to be sure of the pronunciation of some of the English transliterations of the names of the characters in the play. Bleah.)

Yeah, I would never dream of contributing anything to the French Wikipédia. I can write and speak just fine, but I KNOW I don't read exactly like a French person (intonations, stress, and whatnot).

How goes the Columbine recording? Once I get the hang of this recording stuff, I would love to record articles for things I enjoy, stuff like:

• Sergei Rachmaninoff
• House of Leaves
• American Beauty
• Frederic Chopin

Sound files and Vanilla Sex

Dear Ckamaeleon, did you suggest suitable articles for new voice recorders? I found a list which included some interesting subjects, and i've recorded my first rendering of the vanilla sex article. So it's sitting on my computer now - but I don't know what to do with it next! Can you direct me to some help with loading this file? Ckamaeleon! I've done it I reckon! My first audible contribution is up and ready to listen to on Vanilla sex. Thank you so much for helping me today, and please let me know what you think. I'm listening to the article on Palladian Architecture, and it's pretty good by comparison with mine. Not sure how to improve the quality of my submissions, but if you have any ideas I'd really like to hear from you. Thanks again. Also, the method for getting .wav files to become .ogg files was to find the shareware suggested for helping Windows Media Player to play .ogg files, and then work down the host's page to a section on audio conversion. The second option worked fine, once I'd saved the icon for the programme that it downloaded, and I ended up with a drag and drop programme called oggdropXpd. It's working fine.
