National Taiwanese Contest/East Asia contest?

Hi, I've created Wikipedia:Contests/Toolkit/Template based on the very successful women contest model. It will make setting up a new contest really easy. You might be interested in running a contest for Taiwan or East Asian region on here. If so I'd be happy to help you set it up and guide you to getting a grant and participants.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:48, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Johor

I think this link will help you to expand the Johor article. (ps. Your User talk page is too many reply, hope you move the older talk to archive because m this page is too lag.. plz..)TQ angys (Talk Talk) 19:17, 30 March 2018 (UTC)

Oh, thanks for the info. Yeah, things are getting longer. Sometimes when there are too many replies, I can't trace which one is which one & got lost. Do you know how to "archive" or move some of these older conversations to archive page? I've never done that before. Oh ya, regarding Johor article & maybe other articles about states in Malaysia, what is lacking is the detailed economic industries in their state. Too many times Malaysia online newspaper only gives sensational news (e.g. water supply problem) without really informing the overall overview & development of each economic sectors. Although Malaysia is covered with so many palm oil plantation, but news about palm oil is very very rare. Even now what I'm struggling is the exact boundary of each district (daerah) in each state. Too many times the local authority (majlis daerah or majlis bandaraya) has improper/vague boundary of their respective area. Some even follow popular opinion regarding the location (e.g. either Bandar Sunway is located inside Petaling Jaya or Subang Jaya, either Skudai is located inside Johor Bahru City (MBJB) or Iskandar Puteri (BPIP or formerly MPJBT), but Iskandar Puteri sometimes are popularly known only on those highly developing area in western Johor (those Legoland & Kota Iskandar regions, without those older establishment such as Skudai, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah etc), or whether Masai is part of JB city (MBJB) or Pasir Gudang (MPPG). Even I can never figure outk the exact boundary of George Town (Penang) city area (to differentiate between George Town city area and Bayan Baru town area. are Jelutong and Gelugor even towns by itself or suburb or George Town?). When things have been written its articles to be more and more detailed, we need these proper limit & boundary between each other to avoid overlapping. You know any source that can solve these problems? Thanks in advance :) Chongkian (talk) 00:41, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
You can see Wikipedia:ARCHIVE. For the boundary one, I prefer to follow PBT's boundary because it have 3 level and district only 1 level. In South Korea , they have county and also city for thier administrative division. Malaysia should learn to China and Korea. So for I I will use PBT first (except Penang for district or postcode boundary, only MBPP and MPSP although the resident reached 1000000). So better we wikipedians do maps for readers can know know it clearly.

Iskandar Puteri, Hang Tuah Jaya it was like Petaling Jaya at the time is a satelite city for the state seat. Afterwards, the old town under the municipal/city council such as Skudai and Ayer Keroh will become part of it in the future (example is Sungai Way). George Town is a city but It is usually regarded as Penang. (Bayan Baru=Bayan Lepas's new town, Jelutong and Gelugor are George Town proper just like KL and Cheras , Bukit Buntang).

In spite of this, some local governments did not follow the main town areas. I will divide it into three categories: multiple towns (Manjung comprise of Sitiawan, Lumut, Pangkor, Seri Manjung, Beruas;MP Selayang have Batu Caves, Rawang, Gombak.. but those area's population is roughly the same), concentration in urban areas (JB, PJ, Melaka City) and dual-core town (MBIP Skudai and IP, MPSP Butterworth and BM). However, the borders of most districts and local governments are the same. For some area like Puchong, Bukit Mertajam, Skudai that have not own its MP/MD, we should use the postcode boundary.

proper limit & boundary? Maybe [1] and this. JUPEM should do for that but they doesnt publish those boundary into the Internet. angys (Talk Talk) 10:42, 31 March 2018 (UTC)

I want to tell you that, since you had add a transportation section for many towns in Johor Bahru. Perhaps you can create a List of bus routes in Johor Bahru. You can refer to List of bus routes in Penang and List Of bus routes in Kuala Lumpur, thank you. angys (Talk Talk)

Oh, good idea. I shall create one after collecting all of the important sources on the whole bus routes in Johor. Chongkian (talk) 06:00, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

Taiwan–Ukraine relations

Uhm, this is a bit hard to rate. If only those two have representative offices on each side (for sure not embassies due to one-china policy), then it's easier to access. Ok, at least since it is not just one paragraph and there is some history to it, then this can be 'start' article. But still, much more things can be added to make it as a C or even B article, I'll name a few:
On this history section, what is the latest development between the two sides (at least in the year 2010 and above)? Any latest discussion in Ukrain or Taiwan's parliament in establishing representative offices?
Can add political section. Has there any (or any discussion on) visit from officials from both sides to each other sides (after Ukraine established relation with PRC)?
Can add economic section. Any trading activities between the two sides (export & import)? If yes, what are the import or export value & the surplus? Is there any Taiwanese products being marketed & sold in Ukraine & vice versa? How many Ukrain expats working in Taiwan & vice versa.
Can add cultural section. Is there any "Ukrainian Culture/Music/Film Festival" in Taiwan & vice versa?
Can add education section. Is there any Ukrainian students studying in Taiwanese universities & vice versa? Is there any Ukrainian language teaching/courses in Taiwan & vice versa?
Can add conflicts with Mainland China with regards to Taiwan, if any. Does PRC government have any affairs/saying on any Ukraine's matter with Taiwan? e.g. Naming of "Taiwan" or "Taiwan, China" in any official publication or documentation.
Of course if there is any photo to supplement this article would be really much appreciated :)

Chongkian (talk) 05:57, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

  • To the response, I would answer the questions I know.
  1. A representative office is not official, we know. So, the discussion between both sides is not obviously important. The former soviet union countries almost follow the One China policy, China and they don't allow that in their capitals. This part still needs the reliable resource.
  2. The answer is yes. But the resources are all Chinese language. I will tell the problem as follow paragraph.
  3. Same as section 2.
  4. I think that would be unnecessary because it's not an official activity.
  5. No, as I know. No one knows the Ukranian language in Taiwan due to the few movements between both sides. But there are few Russian language lessons.
  6. I think this part all happens in Russia, Belarus, Moldova and many countries. Ukraine is not the only case.
  7. What kinds of a picture? I will pick one. I know well-known Ukrainian in Taiwan.

So the main problem is that I looked for a Wikipedia/admin a week ago, he just quitted and left my contribution alone for the reason I believe it's too personal (This always happens in the Chinese culture, some people care about the politeness only). There are lots of information could be missing during the translation process. If you know someone understands Chinese well and can proofread, please recommend them on the list. Otherwise, more expanding is not gonna happen. Thanks. --Beta Lohman (talk) 01:07, 8 April 2018 (UTC)

Event coordinator granted

After reviewing your request for the "eventcoordinator" permission, I have enabled the flag on your account. Keep in mind these things:

  • The event coordinator right removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24-hour period.
  • The event coordinator right allows you to temporarily add the "confirmed" permission to newly created accounts. You should not grant this for more than 10 days.
  • The event coordinator right is not a status symbol. If it remains unused, it is likely to be removed. Abuse of the event coordinator right will result in its removal by an administrator.
  • Please note, if you were previously a member of the "account creator" group, your flag may have been converted to this new group.

If you no longer require the right, let me know, or ask any other administrator. Drop a note on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of the event coordinator right. Happy editing! TonyBallioni (talk) 02:22, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Scholarly sources?

I have noticed that there are not many scholarly books and articles used as sources in the article Islam in Taiwan. The article is mostly drawing from news sources. Adding more scholarly sources will increase the chances to get the article to pass as GA. It will also help to add more reflection to the article.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 22:43, 16 April 2018 (UTC) Copied from Talk:Islam in Taiwan#Scholarly sources?.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 11:43, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

Yes, I do acknowledge and understand that shortcoming. Most of the matters in Islam in Taiwan are contemporary issues, so most of the news and latest news come from the online news website. I've tried to search for such scholarly sources, but there isn't just enough (or almost none) sources to support that due to the nature that the religion is (or at least had been) a very minority in Taiwan over the past few decades. Only recently things have started to catch up and grow considerably well, thus more are covered by the news. Nevertheless, I'll try to see what else I can do about it. Chongkian (talk) 16:22, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
I usually search for sources on Google Scholar and Hollis, for what it is worth.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 20:22, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

Project tags on talk pages

Are by their own design defaulted to category - when placed raw on a talk page - there is no valid reason to add class=category JarrahTree 04:36, 28 May 2018 (UTC)

Oh oh, true, I didn't realize that. I've tried it just now (e.g. {{WikiProject ABC}} only), and once previewed/saved, it shows category. Thank's for pointing that out! :) Chongkian (talk) 04:43, 28 May 2018 (UTC)
some category tag template are hard wired for articles and will not default to cat and NA - and you have to put them (class=NA) in specifically, but 99 percent of project tags default to category and NA without the extra coding. also there was/is a brilliant project tagging device in preferences..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Evad37/rater
well worth getting and using, as you can rate from min space and not have to open the talk page while assessing. Well worth trying JarrahTree 06:30, 28 May 2018 (UTC)
Uhm, let me have a look on that. Wikipedia is such a vast network (and it keeps growing). There is always something new to learn every single day! :) Chongkian (talk) 06:36, 28 May 2018 (UTC)
nah no rush - it all depends - it is just if you like tidying up talk pages and tags, the implementing Rater seems an obvious addition to the toolkit, so to speak, imho JarrahTree 06:52, 28 May 2018 (UTC)
Any WikiProject template that is built around {{WPBannerMeta}} (plus a few that aren't, such as {{WikiProject Anime and manga}} and {{WikiProject Military history}}) will autodetect the class and importance for all non-article talk pages, and also for article redirects. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 16:03, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
there is a very large backlog of inadequately tagged categories and articles - where many things are part of the subject/topic, but not what can be done. Many china project articles could have an extra qualifier project where someone has wandered through with china and not added anything else, as you might have found already JarrahTree 04:37, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, really really A LOT. Not only about the category's wikiproject categorization, but also the category itself (forget about article's categorization, which is probably millions are not yet fully categorized and given class/importance to its wikiproject), lol. By the way, the hardest part i found so far is what is the parent of WikiProject Culture? because that wikiproject is now defunct already. I found hard to recatecorize let's say Culture of China (we cant just categorize it into one WikiProject China. still too general). And also the inactive country-based wikiproject I found, such as WikiProject Cambodia, WikiProject Iraq, WikiProject Liechtenstein, I dont think we should ever let this wikiproject country to die/idle (or move to its parents continent WikiProject (e.g. WikiProject Asia, WikiProject Europe), no matter how idle the contributors are, because country is the very very minimum level already. (we can have a dead/defunct other too detailed wikiprojects, but not country-level. well, unless that country probably gone from earth or merge/reunify with other country). Also WikiProject Mongols, does it refer exclusively to Mongolia (country), or it also inclusive of Inner Mongolia (part of China)? For WikiProjet Tibet, Hong Kong & Macau, I shall assume all of them to be exclusively part of WikiProject China (so no need to write both WikiProject Tibet and WikiProject China at the same time in its category talk page). we shall not discuss any further disputed political divisions here, else WikiProject categorization will be a never ending works. Some still haven't been solved though, especially WikiProject Kosovo and WikiProject Crimea (to be sub of Ukraine or Russia). For WikiProject Korea, seems they cater both north & south korea, although for North Korea, there is the sub-wikiproject (or workgroup) from WikiProject Korea (WikiProject Korea|nk=yes), but we dont see the same thing for South Korea. Many topics in Russia's far east, Mongolia, nothern China are categorized into WikiProject Central Asia, which i think it is too general. We have each of those country's WikiProject. "cross-country-border" WikiProjects shall only be used for cases such as cross-country geographical features (e.g. desert, rivers etc), or the general topic of such area (e.g. Geography of Central Asia, etc). These need much more work for recategorization into its child categories. These special distinction & divisions in WikiProject which I think is really fundamental, we need to address first. Jawi Name

I've noticed that you have removed the Jawi name from several Singaporean articles that are of historic value to the Malays and replace them with Chinese script. While Singapore does not recognize Jawi as an official script, it is still used within those institutions[1][2][3]. Also as these institutions are of great importance to the Malays, it makes sense to have Jawi rather than Chinese script.

Do note that Jawi is the older system of writing Malay and that it is of great importance that it is still retained in today's context so as to preserve the Malay culture. While the Chinese can have pinyin, Hokkien and peh oe ji (In which it isn't an official script official by the way) why can't the Malays have Jawi translations to the name? We would appreciate if you would stop such edits and if possible restore those articles that you have edited as it would have felt that the edits have marginalized the Malays further in a country that Malays are indigenous to. 32cravenfan (talk) 17:19, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Just as a note here - the issue is that adding unreadable script that is not referenced is WP:OR and items should or could be removed on the basis that there is no way an english speaking editor can verify jawi material... on that basis there is very limited application or usage in an english encyclopedia for such additions. If that is not understood - the Indonesian project discussion page has had explanation of this. To ask an editor to 'stop' a particular sort of editing on the basis on unprovable additions (see WP:V) is in bad faith JarrahTree 09:07, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

Refenences

If you think I have marginalized the Malays, then I'm sorry. But I'm trying to write based on neutral-point-of-view and 101% objective First according to Wikipedia writing standard. By right, it is the official languages of that particular country first where the name should be listed. The Jawi script is official in Brunei, thus naming of Brunei-related name is English (because of en.wikipedia.org), then followed by the official Malay in alphabet & Malay in Jawi. For Singapore, before we add the Jawi script, it's better to provide the name in 4 Singapore official languages first (English, Malay, Chinese & Tamil). We work based on priority first (official first, then only additional name, due to other factors (e.g. history, etc). Chongkian (talk) 17:23, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
And I also add many other information to the mosques also, such as subdivision (e.g. Punggol, Ang Mo Kio), transportation access, category of establishment year, see also, infobox, link to wikimedia commons, reorganizing photos in wikimedia commons, organize them according to their appropriate WikiProject, creating wikimedia commons new category, etc. I'm adding more & more information as a Wikipedia article standard. This is what most of the articles is lacking and we should help each other to improve as Wikipedia Article. I'm actually trying to bring this Singapore-mosque related articles to a much much higher-level standard of articles. It has nothing to do about marginalizing the Malays if that's what you think. We try to be professional here as Wikipedia editors, not try to take things personally. Chongkian (talk) 17:29, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
While I do not stop you from making further improvements to the articles, to replace/remove the Jawi names and replace them with Chinese names in articles that do not have much relevance to non-Chinese institutions already felt marginalizing enough. It would be similar if someone were to remove all the Hokkien, Pinyin and peh oe ji (Since they too are not the official script) translations in Chinese related institutions and replaced them with Malay. Being professional, you shouldn't erase the previous efforts of other Wikipedia editors that have put the trouble and effort to contribute to the articles without first considering it's relevance.32cravenfan (talk) 03:07, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

sociology tag

Used to be a sign that a certain project editor who I have had to tackle over a few issues had been there - ok the culture project tag is very offputting this project is dead style - however I would counsel very carefully, the slippage of a western sociology to understanding cultures that are not western - I would strongly suggest avoiding the slippage - as a trained anthropologist with fieldwork experience in south east asia I would say that the sociology tag is misleading. I would not necessarily espouse the anthrop tag either...it is complicated - better to leave alone in the end imho. Otherwise - thank you for your very consistent work in making wikipedia a better place! JarrahTree 13:39, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

beware - the nafas or semangat of the festival project tagging is kurang sehat - hati hati - believe me...

it was expanded by an editor who was trying to 'festivalise' the whole of wikipedia before he was blocked....

seeing how well you have been doing with tagging - dont worry - I am just old and superstitious - but take care JarrahTree 08:51, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

Well, probably I will shout for your help when there is someone start to tag me "annoying/spam" etc in Wikipedia after all of those changes in WikiProject classification, hehe. Sometimes someone has to take the initiative to do all of those long & boring cleanup works, and not everyone can be satisfied about it (there will always be excuses made). But life goes on. I try to diverse everything, not only Wikiproject classification, but also Wikipedia article creation, Wikiquote article creation, Wikimedia Commons photo uploads & categorization, Wikiproject evaluation (grade & importance), Wikipedia meetups etc. Only now I acknowledge WikiProject Festivals is not really a good Wikiproject cuz there is no assessment section inside it. But well, at least it is not an inactive Wikiproject. Even if I need to choose other than WikiProject Festivals, what shall be the parent Wikiproject of Wikiproject Festival? Chongkian (talk) 08:59, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

Technically the inactive 'culture' project - would be the best - but it needs (the project) to be resurrected from the inert/active state JarrahTree 09:02, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

removing oceans

OK it might be a bit of a problem - but both culture and oceans though for some absurd reason 'made inactive' by taggers - the project tags are still relevant... imho, I would be very wary about removing them - I do not think 'oceanography' will in the long run take over the role of the oceans project - as far as I can tell JarrahTree 06:48, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Well, that article already have soo many WikiProjects classification. Removing one inactive project is like try to help cleaning it up. Same like the inactive Taiwan aborigines WikiProject, it is completely inactive and has been redirected to WikiProject Taiwan. Thus to replace that Taiwan aborigines WikiProject, I changed it to Ethnic group Wikiproject because there are only two WikiProject classifications (Taiwan & that Taiwan aborigines) .. note: my spelling on the WikiProject names might be a bit off from the exact wording beccause I don't double check it when typing this. I somehow agree with you we should not simply keep deleting any inactive ones, but at the same time also we should not keep remain passive in not reviving those inactive WikiProjects right? Hopefully by having those inactive WikiProject removed, it will trigger some concerned Wikipedians to revive it again to be active WikiProject :) .. Anynow, feel free to undo my deletion on that inactive WikiProject. I was just simply browsing it randomly (while improving WikiProjects for Taiwan-related articles) and I found out that inactive ones while searching the parents/childs WikiProject of it - sort of. Chongkian (talk) 06:54, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
lucu I think to myself. Oceans needs reviving - I am sure there are other that need merging. JarrahTree 06:56, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Infobox settlement

Dear Chongkian, please use Infobox settlement (480 000 transclusions) and NOT Infobox Settlement (~10 000 transclusions) 77.11.66.175 (talk) 02:48, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi, may I know which articles you are referring to? If you are talking about the divisions (cities, districts & towns) of Taiwan (in which I've been adding the infobox quite often), I am using the infobox provided (or agreed) in the WikiProject Taiwan page (at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Taiwan/Taiwanese_townships_task_force) in which that's the basis for all of the divisions of Taiwan. If you want to make changes on that, perhaps you might want to voice it out first at that WikiProject Taiwan there. Thanks :) Chongkian (talk) 02:57, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
All the articles where you planned to put "Infobox Settlement", which is a redirect to "Infobox settlement" since 2009. You seem to be the only editor adding them in large scale and doing it still in September 2018. [1] 77.13.28.88 (talk) 22:34, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
