Re: SPI

Hi,

I've looked at the case you opened and it appears that the accounts are editing through an open proxy. I've blocked the IPs for a year, so that should help stem those specific proxies. However, if you want I can semi-protect your user page to prevent future occurrences. Just let me know. Best, Mike VTalk 17:05, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Response

Sorry, no. The WikiBomb was an attempt to draw in new editors in areas in which Wikipedia is woefully underrepresented, and did a surprisingly good job of sticking to people covered in impeccable sources.

We need more articles on this stuff. Wikipedia has massively over-represented coverage of sports, television, and politics, because they are things that Wikipedia's fairly thin demographic understands in spades. Our coverage of history in areas like health and education sucks, and seeing people like you essentially deliberately sabotage efforts because you don't see the significance of pioneering women in a particular field or people who discover diseases is absolutely disgusting. Compare this to your one (1) (!) article contribution for the entirety of 2014 (Game X Change), which doesn't come close to the notability of this article. You should be ashamed of yourself. The Drover's Wife (talk) 13:39, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

@The Drover's Wife: Please do not be incivil, and consider striking out your last sentence, that of "you should be ashamed of yourself". Calling me "disgusting" and resorting to ad hominem attacks such as pointing to my article contributions does not help your position. The only things that should matter about the article is whether it is notable, not Wikipedia:Righting great wrongs. Grognard Chess (talk) Ping when replying 13:49, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
You're gleefully chasing off new editors with expertise that Wikipedia desperately needs for no good reason. You've notability tagged or tried to delete a swathe of articles with obvious claims to notability in areas where Wikipedia desperately needs more editors. These editors won't come back if their first experience on Wikipedia is having to have a huge argument over people that are flagrantly obviously notable in their fields of expertise. You need to stop biting the newbies, and as long as you behave as you currently are, you are the problem with Wikipedia. You are actively undermining the development of article content for no apparent reason apart from perhaps feeding your own ego. The Drover's Wife (talk) 13:53, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
And you disrespect new editors who are looking at dedicating some of their time to writing content for Wikipedia when you force them into completely unnecessary debates about whether their work gets deleted. There are at least three editors who are unlikely to return to Wikipedia as a direct consequence of your behaviour, and to turn around and whine at me about respect is ironic to say the least. The Drover's Wife (talk) 13:55, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
@The Drover's Wife: 5th uncivil comment towards me. Also, if an article is not notable, it should be deleted. Nothing else matters. Dismissing my arguments as whining and "feeding my ego" may work in your mind, but the WP:CIVIL policy disagrees with your arguments. Grognard Chess (talk) Ping when replying 14:00, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
WP:BITE is a policy, too. You seem to enjoy roleplaying the enforcer in your own head, but I am interested in building an encyclopedia, and someone who repeatedly drives off specialist editors while contributing no content of his own is a serious problem in my book. The Drover's Wife (talk) 14:04, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
@The Drover's Wife: [18], [19], [20], [21], [22], [23]. All uncivil edits. Grognard Chess (talk) Ping when replying 14:26, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

For what it's worth, since you withdrew the AfD (and thank you!), Trove is a phenomenal resource for anything related to Australia prior to 1953: it's got just about every edition of every newspaper of significance these days. I will also say that the ADB article on Golding was unusually crap: I will absolutely stand by their calls as to who is notable enough for an article, but I found out far more about her notability in two pages of a Trove search than I did from their article. The Drover's Wife (talk) 16:11, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

@The Drover's Wife: Civility problems still stand. Grognard Chess (talk) Ping when replying 16:12, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

No, I criticised your behaviour. I am now asking you nicely to stop harassing me. I consider this done, but if you persist in trying to bully me then I will be the one requesting that you be barred from interacting with me. The Drover's Wife (talk) 16:26, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

The Blessed Book of Beasts

I have reverted your closure, please give the afd discussion enough time and wait until a uninvolved administrator closes it, thanks Avono♂ (talk) 16:38, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

@Avono: Speedy keep rules disregard the normal amount of time for an AfD. That is why they are called speedy keeps. Since your nomination stated that it fulfilled one criteria of WP:NBOOK, which is what makes the book notable, I do not understand how your nomination advances an argument for deletion. Per the rules for speedy keep

I closed it. Grognard Chess (talk) Ping when replying 17:08, 6 November 2014 (UTC).

I have nothing against the closure, but by voting on it you became involved in the discussion which is against the rules, I am just trying to follow procedure.:

An admin who is uninvolved and has not participated in the deletion discussion will assess the discussion for consensus to Keep, Delete, Merge, Redirect, or Transwiki the article. An editor in good standing who is not an administrator, and is also uninvolved, may close AfDs in certain circumstances; appropriate closures that non-admins may make are detailed at Wikipedia:Non-admin closure § Appropriate closures.

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Chess. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).
