I really like that whole Ash album. At some point I should burn it to my computer. WesleyDodds (talk) 06:06, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Have you heard the third ash album? (thats the kindest thing I can to say about the second). Anyway: Irish funk. Takes a few listens to get it, but trust me, dat shit is down, and very of here, boys. Its a very small secene in IRL, and did quite a few mushrooms mid 90s with thoes men; even though they are from Dublin (that fucking place can burn to the ground for all I care; Cork will rise from the ashes....yeah). Ceoil (talk) 06:12, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've heard the second; the singles are really good (actually ended up listening to "Girl From Mars" on my iPod because of the link you posted). By the way, having trouble settling and deciding what my next ful-length project shall be. Right now I'm hovering about a bunch of Nirvana articles, trying to see what I can reasonably get to standard before I run out of source material to pull from. Go for In Utero, definatly. Albini will give you enough rope to weave a great story. Ceoil (talk) 18:03, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Can you provide sound clips? "Heart-Shaped Box" is a definite inclusion, but I'm not sure what else to use. WesleyDodds (talk) 01:15, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Give me a few minutes. "Heart-Shaped Box" on the way, what else do you need. Ceoil (talk) 01:25, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Given what's sourced in the article, probably Cobain screaming at the end of "Milk It". WesleyDodds (talk) 02:22, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mushrooms and H. Bosch edit

Cas and Ceoil: the section I was gonna reply in has been rudely archived, but I came back to tell you that after a thorough search of The Garden of Earthly Delights' left panel—that is, a high-res JPEG depiction purloined from Vandalay's Art Industries and displayed on my new 1080p TV (a Christmas present to myself)—I can tell you that there are no fly agarics to be found. Might your reliable source (cough--yeah, literally) have been confusing this mushroom with the numerous strawberries with whitish seeds in that painting? I would like to look at the other Bosch you mentioned, Cas, but I can't find it under the title you used (though I didn't try very hard, and worse yet that title is now gone forever to the archives). I heard that the moon was especially close to the earth the other day: is someone watching out for Ceoil? –Outriggr § 03:53, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Weird...huh? is he a werewolf? Researching Amanita muscaria has been amusing as to the extent and nature of some of teh claims.....I will hunt down the name in a sec. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:45, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Paradise and Hell 'tis verily, forsooth. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:46, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dead end... I'm not clear on the difference between The Haywain Triptych and the above. I found a slightly different Hawywain Triptych than the Wikipedia image, and anyway using that as a proxy for Paradise and Hell (if it really is a separate but largely duplicate work)... does not turn up a mushroom in the left panel! Case closed - which you will be saying much more often I hear... congratulations! (And sorry for the vague comments above. The reliable source comment was based my notion that you said you got this info from Erowid. Art Vandalay Industries was a company made up by George or Kramer on a Seinfeld episode. And the moon comment was indeed because Ceoil is a werewolf.) –Outriggr § 06:51, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I told you that in stricted confidence. What the fuck man; being a wearwolf and eating fellow editor (which I never did) is a blockable offence as you well know. Remember I have dirt on you too. Ceoil (talk) 17:50, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Is Outriggr personally attacking you again? Oh my. Well I came here with a happier thing to share -- I was at an "Irish Pub" the other day (I put Irish Pub in quotation marks as there was no haggis on the menu, as you would expect in an authentically Irish venue, nor were any of the waitresses redheaded) and it said "Slainte" above the bar. I had a Boddingtons in your honor. --JayHenry (talk) 19:31, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Outriggr is on his high horse again about the undead being unfit to edit an encylopedia. Whatever, can you block him please. O and did you have a few Guineass? Anyway, really, you should know that haggis is really only fit for eating by wild freckled faced and dress wearing red haired soap dodgers? ? Ceoil (talk) 19:37, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

King of Ireland edit

Your country's monarch wrote an interesting little piece for The New York Times[3] (it's a famous publication over here). At first I wasn't quite sure where he was going, but he wraps it up nicely. And some very good lines. "Blue eyes and red" maybe even great. I have to conclude that he's not a bad writer by any stretch. --JayHenry (talk) 06:50, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

No problem; will do. You're fine with me helping there (ie, your userspace), then? Kafka Liz (talk) 20:17, 19 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I dunno, sometimes folks get pretty pissy about others editing their subpages. I'll grab the refs up and add them later, then. Kafka Liz (talk) 20:27, 19 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I added in the refs from the mainspace article -- feel free to remove them, change the format, whatever. I put an article in the bibliography before I saw your remarks on their inclusion. In any case, you probably have far more resources on Górecki than I do at this point, and certainly more familiarity with the material, so don't feel obliged to keep them if there are better sources out there. The Raft of the Medusa edit

Hi Ceoil. Thank you for the note. She was a lovely model, from France. The picture is four feet high, and painted all in one session. I will keep an eye out for this, although as in the case of Friedrich, my at-hand resources for Gericault are limited, so I don't think I will bring much to the table in terms of content. But what a worthy venture! Currently I'm engaged with the Eakins painting. Have a very happy holiday, and mind your feet if you go out to the pub! JNW (talk) 21:58, 20 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, with models I am always the gentleman. Still, the painting process is so difficult that given the many choices of subject, one often prefers to struggle over skin tones. Of course I'd be delighted to see the high-res version of the Raft. Cheers! JNW (talk) 22:28, 20 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry to say that I can't open the e-mail. But do take a look at the Eakins I've been working on. There's really a humorous kind of contrast to the Raft: pyramidal compositions, both on water, but with very different subjects and intent, obviously. JNW (talk) 23:13, 20 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for copy-editing. Though I try, I'm still an imbecile re: proper footnoting. Probably inhaled too many solvents. JNW (talk) 23:56, 20 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Why don't you upload the high res version of Medusa, or a reduced version of it: I think the max size now permissible is something like 23 MB. Ty 00:36, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Friendly reminder. I share the odd image with Ceoil by email, but I obtain the files under a restrictive personal use license and they can't be uploaded here, whether they're slavish depictions or not... I certainly don't want that license breached with me as the source. –Outriggr § 03:46, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thats understood. Ceoil (talk) 06:27, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've just been looking around on ARTstor, and they have over twenty different preparatory drawings and oil sketches for the Raft of the Medusa, several contemporary lithographs not by Gericault illustrating the incident, an engraving that has a diagram of the raft, and an extremely high resolution version of the painting itself... I've taken all the drawings by screen capture and will upload them to commons soon, but it will take me longer to zoom in on the painting, take scores of screen captures, and then piece them back together.... Happy holidays, anyway. Lithoderm 06:25, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Greetings edit

Thanks Ceoil. Here's one of my favorite Christmas carols for you.[4] Not so well known, on this side of the Atlantic at least. (I searched Youtube high and low for a version that was choral, didn't mess with the harmony, and had the right tempo. I learned of it from this album, which has the best choir but you have to deal with the silly sound effects. I get goosebumps from the deep, a capella moment at 2:35.)

Have a great holiday. –Outriggr § 02:39, 22 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't really like to plan things, because it starts to turn this game into something more like work. So I'll just keep an eye out and see what you get up to. I'd like to pretend there was some good academic reason for my preference, but really it boils down to which historical period I'd like to wear the clothes of. I mean, there's something ineffably cool about the clobber worn in my chosen century, but after about 1630, it all starts getting a bit too fussy and frilly, if you ask me. No wonder the cavaliers lost, dressed like that bunch of herberts. I once wore a Tudor shirt from a costume basket down the pub, and in retrospect I was lucky I didn't get my nose punched in. qp10qp (talk) 16:05, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ceoil, strange goings on at The Garden of Earthly Delights and 2 other Bosch ptgs..The Wayfarer and The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things, the same editor: Sayerslle (talk · contribs) also using at least 12 separate IPs (from the UK) is adding similar material from a book by Lynda Harris - The Secret Heresy of Hieronymus Bosch to all three articles..you might watchlist Bosch, see what developes...I'm a little puzzled..but I expect there is more to come...Modernist (talk) 00:35, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I noticed the edit at the Garden, too, and followed Modernist's trail to find a handful of articles on Bosch paintings that had been written so as to consist almost completely of Ms. Harris' interpretations. Whatever the rationale, it doesn't look quite right, and I applied templates for balance and sources to each of them. More input is welcome. JNW (talk) 01:56, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
If you think thats weird you should look at the edit history of Be Here Now, there has been a prolonged and sustained atempt by multiple ips and spa's to add 2 million units to the sales figure in the lead. "Coleridge decided that they would move to Ratzeburg in Schleswig-Holstein, a less expensive town with a vibrant social life" - I always read that the place Coleridge moved to was more expensive than Wordsworth could afford, so I figured that Razeburg was more expensive than Hamburg. I'm not really a fan of horror movies because I have the same disposition as you. The German Expressionist films are my favorite, but I assume a cultured man such as yourself is familiar with them. WesleyDodds (talk) 23:05, 21 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't get this: "The Raft of the Medusa (French: Le Radeau de la Méduse) is an oil painting of 1818–19 by the French Romantic painter and lithographer Théodore Géricault (1791–1824)." I'm not sure of the intended meaning, or else I would rewrite it myself. WesleyDodds (talk) 12:09, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Have you seen the promo pics for his last album (outabout a month ago). May god forgive but is his wife is one hot chick. I suppose I can say these things on valenties day! By the way, I am definatly on for the Manc album, just need to sort out The Lucy poems first, and that will take about a week. It's time to rate alt-rock/indie innit guitar heroes. Was listening to "One Love" and thought, "God, John Squire sure loves using hammer-ons. Decent player, but needs more tricks." Personally my favorites are Bob Mould and Billy Corgan, before both of them became hopelessly bland. WesleyDodds (talk) 11:52, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I dont rate Corgan as a guitarist. I like pavement and pavement era Blur type music, and I rate the guy in the fall circa Hex Enduction Hour (maybe a better album than loveless, astral weeks or the quuen is dead). I like striped and pare guitar lines, non invasive, and I espically like when the bass and guitar lines are basically locked into the same figure. Hate to be mr Fall here, but one of the great things about MES is he doesnt take any shit from musicians, look at the sparce astetic here.[24] Albini goes for the same thing in shellac and fair play to him.[25]. More of the same here[26]. Ceoil (talk) 12:00, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Underrated: the boys from Mudhoney, the poor bloke from the Long Blondes, Daniel Ash. Appropriately rated good folks: J Mascis, Peter Buck. Simple yet effective: the dudes from Velocity Girl, that Cobain feller. WesleyDodds (talk) 12:27, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Lost classic. Yes, it's a bit tongue in cheek. WesleyDodds (talk) 12:33, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Also, I can't be bothered to find out who Reznor hired to play guitar here, but it's one of my favorites, particularly in the last 90 seconds of the song. It makes for a nice soundtrack when strolling through the gardens on a sunny afternoon. WesleyDodds (talk) 12:52, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Wesley, I'd be interested to hear what you think of this [27] Plastikman track. Could have been produced by Hannett as far as I'm concerned. Even my "dance music is shit" sad indie kid friends like Richie Hawtin. Its all about sound with Hawtin, so headphones pls. Ceoil (talk) 01:20, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sounds like across between Mute and Warp Records. Good soundtrack for playing video games in the dark. WesleyDodds (talk) 01:51, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Mute? Never liked Warp, too bloody clever and fussy. Hawtin is mimialist to an extreme, listen to this from 1.42[28]. The money shot is just after 3.24. Ceoil (talk) 02:13, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Magic Mushrooms edit

Concerning this edit: Having widely read on Nick Drake, I've never come across any proof, or indeed informed, published speculation, that the mushrooms Drake was holding were "magic". Obviously is was the late sixties and all but isn't it far more likely that the mushrooms were just picked on-the-fly in the photoshoot rather than being prepared especially for the shot? If they were picked during the photoshoot it's quite likely that they aren't "magic mushrooms" given the fact that it takes knowledge of suitable growing spots and a very keen eye to distinguish them from poisonous/ordinary varieties. If it's common knowledge then why does neither the main Drake literature nor the wide world of internet published journalism seem to say anything about it? I see you had a hand in this. Ah, Ceoil. Whatever my complaints, and however long away, Wikipedia has blessed me.

No Ceoil; five days ? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:26, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm sure he has a perfectly reasonable reason for not showing up lately. My guess is it involves a week-long two-for-one drink special at his local pub. Can't keep a man from priorities. WesleyDodds (talk) 05:40, 1 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Terribly sorry – Master Ceoil is laid up with a rather nasty case of cloveritis, which he picked up at the local discotheque. He promises to return to Wikipedia when his strength has returned. Unfortunately – and I apologised profusely – I, his humble manservant cannot get the bloody wireless Internet device to work in Master's bedroom. He is going through some rather nasty internet withdrawals, then – not unlike Master's favorite scene in Trainspotting, in which babies are to be seen crawling on the ceiling as a result of heroin withdrawal. Oh no, I've said too much – I think I thought I heard him cry. Cheerio then. Ceoil's manservant (talk) 07:37, 1 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sadly its nationalised and getting a new ISP would nessitate overthrowing the goverment.

Much as I enjoy chatting to you, I draw the line at a coug. Dont take that personally, it just that life and goverment are more important. Maybe in 10 years time, when I have more and more able man servants. Ceoil (talk) 21:42, 1 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Several edit

Two talk/user pages blanked/archived today; Sandy has pestered. And pestered. What's with talk and user page redesign everywhere? Can she go away for a few weeks and not come back to a ghost town? What has she missed? (Why the exodus?)

e-mail (I am told that yours does work at times).

Youtube videos do not play correctly from the lousy connection here; Sandy is not seeing the big deal about these Kings of Leon (perchance you men put undue emphasis on how you look. Consider instead the reaction from the women when you open your mouths to speak or write; with all those FAs, Sandy says you have things all sewn up in any country.)

User:Sandy's social secretary, User talk:Sandy's social secretary (Begging your pardon, but Sandy has had no sleep through four days of wining and dining with friends 'til the sun comes up, so I am interpreting the notes she left when I last saw her heading for an herbal bath and a day of rest and recuperation).

"perchance you men put undue emphasis on how you look". I'm not sure about this. I care less what I look like and am usually dressed in black from january to december all going well, dont care as long as its black. But women tell me no wear green, orange, red, this shape and that. So of course I do until they go away and then its back to black stockings, tops and chords. You can tell where I am in my drought cycle from what I'm wearing, black top is stage 2, black jeans stage three, blacks socks....forgetabout it.

Anyway, thats enough self pity: welcome back Sandy......but forgive me if Sandy has had no sleep through four days of wining and dining with friends til the sun comes up doesn't elicit sympathy at all. Get to grips with your help! Note how we haven't heard sight nor sound of Coeil's manservant since I was dissapointed a few days back there. Better off we are too, and no questions please. Ceoil (talk) 21:13, 13 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I had to dismiss my help after she overbooked me, forgot to pack several items, failed to inform me of the cultural reasons to avoid dressing in red on my trip, and read my private notes. Perchance your manservant left with her? (They deserve each other, but you should know to hide the passport next time.) I am sorry to hear about the black socks; surely these women who want you to "wear green, orange, red, this shape and that" haven't read your featured articles. Sandy sans social secretary
You'll be shocked to hear that if you tell to tell women in a pub in Ireland that "I write FAs for wikipedia2 they tend to make funny shapes with their mouth and back away slowly while blindly grasping for their coat. <sigh> where is the justice? Good to see you back anyhow. Ceoil (talk) 12:16, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
hmmmmm ... perhaps you should get to those women before they hit the bottle. (I'm not back; will perhaps start editing again on 17th). SandyGeorgia (Talk) 12:35, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
See you on the 17th so. (O and re the bottle; beer goggles tend to work in my favour, so no. Bear in mind that all Irish go to pubs, we don't court anywhere else unless interested in being maced.) Ceoil (talk) 12:44, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Time to put aside your silly painting articles for a bit . . . edit

. . . unless they are monochrome. Now that In Utero has attained FA status, you and I (and JD554) need to sort out some unfinished business. You have no say in the matter; this is of utmost importance. We can get this to FA status and on the Main Page in time for the 30th anniversary of its release. Demoiselles and Arnolfini edit

The writing of the Arnolfini one is a bit stilted. I'm quite surprised that Hockey and Whatsit are credited with the theory that van Eyck might have used lenses, camera obscura and so on. That's been around for 45 years that I know of! Actually, that mirror on the back wall is a bit of a give away.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind sticking my oar in. I don't know how you have the endurance to weather the FA procedure! Look at all your gold stars! Amandajm (talk) 09:58, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Funny you should say about camera obscura, my father has a very good eye, and his taste is par none, but he thinks art history is, ahem, "bollocks", although I notice his favoutire sky channel is the Arts channel, and it was he who turned me on to Francis Bacon, and if you push him he'll admit his favourite artist was Lucian Freud up until Lucian Freud painted the Queen (not very cool for Irish).
My point however is that though he has seen maybe five or six Vermeer's now (we have one in Dublin!) in his half knowlege and dotage he still says -can't do the accent- "jasus like you know it was all done with string, mirrrors and camera obscura!". What!!! How does that matter??? Still, god bless that man. Ceoil (talk) 10:38, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well... I'd like a few more days with it. I think there are some sections that are still a bit confusing to the average reader. They are relatively clear to you, me and Ottava because we've all done a lot of reading, but some parts I don't think are quite clear enough. Also... are you proposing that we take it to FAC immediately, or GA, or another peer review? Just so I know where we're going with it. Kafka Liz (talk) 01:01, 25 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

You really think it's ready? There's more I'd like to do, but it's no big thing that can't be addressed during review. I'm feeling a bit burnt out at the moment but don't want to hold things up further. Kafka Liz (talk) 01:33, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Still, feels a bit different this time. I'll shut up and go add it. Kafka Liz (talk) 01:45, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well... I sort of feel as if I've chased everyone off there (certainly not my intent). I don't want people to feel that way; it's a huge article and I just don't know if I have the energy to do it all on my own, is all. I guess I'd like some feedback from folks who haven't been as involved as we've been, so I have a better idea if I'm overthinking things or if it really is as clear and informative as it ought to be. You see? Kafka Liz (talk) 01:55, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's not quite what I meant, unless you'd prefer things that way. I would be really pleased to nominate it, but you guys did start the whole thing off, after all. I just would need a shade more time to be 100% comfortable, but don't want the either of you to get fed up in the meantime. Kafka Liz (talk) 02:10, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
What I'm trying to say - not very well - is I think the problems I have are fairly minor and would probably not throw up any insurmountable road blocks. Plus, we will all have the weekend to work on it, so now might be the best time. Kafka Liz (talk) 02:14, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Cool. Kafka Liz (talk) 02:30, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks and a request edit

Thanks for signing up at Wikipedia:Peer review/volunteers and for your work doing reviews. It is now just over a year since the last peer review was archived with no repsonse after 14 (or more) days, something we all can be proud of. There is a new Peer review user box to track the backlog (peer reviews at least 4 days old with no substantial response), which can be found here. To include it on your user or talk page, please add {{Wikipedia:Peer review/PRbox}} . Thanks again, and keep up the good work, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:59, 25 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oviri edit

I really hate to tell you this, Ceoil, but I can't get a higher resolution image of Oviri, even if ARTstor happens to have one. In fact, the existing photo of Oviri cannot be used except under fair use. While the sculpture itself is in the public domain, the wikimedia foundation has decided that PDART does not apply to photographs of three dimensional works of art because "copyright subsists in the photograph by virtue of artistic choices available to the photographer such as framing and point of view".[46] I wish it weren't the case, but it is...

I'm not sure that they will allow you to use copyrighted images on the main page, either... You can always get it in as a second hook or lower down; the article is certainly good enough to go on DYK, pic or no. Really sorry about this, again. Lithoderm 22:05, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, there's a photo of Gaugin's tomb with the sculpture on it here, at Flickr. You can always try to blather its creator into changing the copyright tag to creative commons... I had some luck with that at the Sacred Cod of Massachusetts. They're usually more than happy to see their work on Wikipedia. As to a plot, no news on that front.... they must be jealous of your gold stars. Anyway, I have an important question to ask you- are you ready?Lithoderm 22:32, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ping. Lithoderm 23:18, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and the article on Oviri says that it might've been modeled on a wood sculpture, no? This photo is interesting in that regard..[47] Lithoderm 03:25, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've asked the creator of that photo and the one above to release them both under an acceptable license. My fingers are crossed. I've temporarily removed the photo from the article (I find they're more likely to comply if they find no picture to begin with- "Ah, poor WP! I feel benevolent all of a sudden") until I get a reply. April Fools' Day main page article edit

Might you be interested in working with me on Museum of Bad Art for April 1 main page FA? I might be able to spank the prose into shape and add all the relevant source information in a week. I'd like to approach it as a serious museum, and may parallel this article's structure to Musee D'Orsay or Metropolitan Museum of Art. Well, I used to appreciate how citation templates standardised formats... but I've grown away from that (it's easy enough to do on my own), and I hate those big purple FIND IT tags. Kafka Liz (talk) 22:45, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re:Q edit

Yes, WP:REFTOOLS for ref formatting, why?--RUCӨ 01:05, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

No, because the tools I use only find hidden problems (such as duplicate ref names, duplicate ref content [reasons not for direct-opposition to the article]). I also check for the dabs and external links; basically, I do technical reviews. So my reviews cant result in a support or oppose for promotion.--RUCӨ 01:26, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
"God speed"?--RUCӨ 01:35, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh. So I'm guess you're telling me to continue what I'm doing? =D True, but sometimes form errors leads to errors in the representation of the content. With ref form errors, that can cause errors in the sourcing of the content, such as wrong refs sourcing information.--RUCӨ 01:48, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, I only saying be more explicit that you are looking through robotic eyes ;. Ceoil (talk) 01:49, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Talk Talk edit

Any reason why the {Refimprove} banner is redundant - on an article that is somewhat short of references? For example, it includes the unsourced sentence - "Laughing Stock crystallised the experimental sound the band started with Spirit of Eden (which has been retroactively categorised as "post-rock" by some critics)."

Just asking - regards,

Derek R Bullamore (talk) 01:39, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
