All those stub images

All those pictures that you're uploading & replacing in the stub messages--we can't use them without knowing the source (where they came from/artist/etc.) and whether we have permission to use them and a specific license agreement such as {{GFDL}}. Yeah, Riffsyphon1024 is right, there is no reason to change all of these to free content clipart (which to me look like old school Windows 95 computer icons). Most of the stub templates you changed to these cliparts, already had an image that had fair usage, such as the Star Wars stub (sw-stub), the Yoada was a screenshot from one of the SW movies, and in Wikipedia that is fair useage. I'm having troubling figuring out the legal status of freegaia.com images. I can't find a clear copyright notice. (There is a site copyright notice which seems to require permission to redistribute or display their content, but that seems to be at odds with the large number of images they offer.) For use on Wikipedia, we need to be a bit more clear than that. Is there a clear copyright statement somewhere?

I am also concerned that some of the images I have found on their site are not public domain images. For example, this images are ezboard.com images and to the best of my knowledge they are not public domain. I don't think that Star Wars images can be public domain, either (since they are derivatives of a copyrighted work).

It might also be wise to put a bit more care into changing images that were custom-created. (For one thing, images that were custom-created by Wikipedians have clear, known copyright status. For another, they may have been chosen for a reason.) For example, Template:Sf-stub really shouldn't have a Star Wars image on it. -Aranel ("Sarah") 02:16, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Going by the one copyright statement that's there, I think that wikipedia shouldn't be using any of these images. After all, alternatives can usually be sourced fairly easily. 19:39, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC).

I have no problem: if you think that these images shouldn't be in Wikipedia (That's the concept of this site: to correct the mistakes of others). It's just that I was bored and I started changing pictures to a more beautiful and significant ones. I was asked by User:Grutness to change some pictures and I did it. Geo-stub images

Hi 500LL, I must admit I'm not 100% happy with some of the new images you've added to the various geo-stubs. Several of the ones that were there were deliberately used so as not to include a flag, simply because with the size they are the predominance of white makes the maps hard to recognise (even with the shadow effect). This is particularly noticeable with Italy, Japan, and Mexico. The icons become far too busy, too, which is why a single colour associated with the country (blue for Italy's Azzuri and Green for Mexico) was used instead. Before you change too many more note that several of them are deliberately not maps for a reason (either disputed territory, for instance with India and Israel, or because the map is not an instantly identifiable shape, as with Spain and Germany).

Also, you replaced a map of the United Kingdom with a map of Great Britain on the UK-geo-stub - clearly a mistake - and that one has been reverted! Grutness|^hello? 02:19, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for changing those three back - one thing I didn't say before is that several of the new pictures are a distinct improvement. It took me ages to find a rocketry picture that was half-way right. The clipart shuttle is a vast improvement! Syrian presence in Lebanon

Since you represent the Lebanese point of view, would you consider moving the article Syrian occupation of Lebanon to Syrian presence in Lebanon? Both governments never recognized an "occupation", and most Lebanese Shi'a didn't either. That article's title comes off from a very Right-Wing Maronite point of view. I will be frank with you. As a lebanese I see the Syrian presence as an occupation. Also it's not only from a "Right-Wing Maronite point of view" as the USA and the european countries recognised it. Well first of all, it's not offensive to the Syrian community because most Syrians and Lebanese understand that it was the dictatorial Ba'athist government that went into Lebanon (after being invited by the Christians). But, if it's an occupation, then you are comparing it to the Israeli occupation of Palestine. If you've been to Lebanon under "occupation", then you'd know that there are no curfews and the country rebounded well during the past 10 years. Anyways, I will leave it up to you to move it to Syrian presence in Lebanon, as there are some pro-Israeli editors stalking me and reverting everything I do.Yuber^(talk) 15:15, 30 May 2005 (UTC)

Cedar Revolution OR Intifada of Independence

I can’t find any references online for the term “Intifada of Independence” and I noticed the previous non-wiki-member reversed it back to his edit to read “Intifada of Independence”. I have been out of Lebanon for over a decade and was wondering if you can confirm which term is correct. Do you think that’s just the why North American Media refers to it? Locally there's no official name for the Cedar revolution. Many are used by the lebanese media to describe this event. The main one is Independance uprising or Intifada of Independance (Intifadat al-Isteqlal). There's also Lebanon spring (Rabi' Lubnan), Lebanon Independance (Iste'lel Lubnan), Cedar uprising (Itifadat al-Arz), Independance 05. Diacritics

Hi there! I'm just curious about one thing: why have you been removing the diacritics such as the acute mark from the spelling of names like Béchara el-Khoury? If the diacritic is part of the spelling of the name, it's supposed to be included. That's why the accented characters are included, for easy insertion, at the bottom of every edit box (scroll down to the bottom of this page to see what I mean). Hi - any reason why you've taken MEast-geo-stub off a couple of articles when adding leb-stub to them? They're still geo-stubs, so they need to keep a geo-type stub template, since many editors search using the specific geo templates. If you wish to add leb-stub, that's fine (although the general country-stubs are usually for non-geographic items), but please add it as a second template rather than replacing the one that's there! Hi, there was recently a dispute because the article about the civilian deaths at Qana was called Qana Massacre, which someone objected to as POV. It was therefore moved to Qana Incident, which was also objected to, and a revert war ensued, leading to page protection. The article has now been called Qana as a compromise, and I'm trying to determine whether that's okay with the editors on the page, so that I can unlock it. Diacritics and redirects

Hi there! I've read your explanation on diacritics and I'm satisfied with it. That part is okay.

One other thing, though: please don't do cut-and-paste page moves. That destroys the edit history. If you find you cannot move a page because there is already something where you want to move it (as in the Emile Lahoud article), ask an administrator (I'm one of them) to delete the destination page for you. Then you'll be able to move the article there.

Please check the Lebanese Forces article

Hi there,

I'm sorry to break into your busy schedule, but could you please have a look at the Lebanese Forces article. A new user named User:Usurp, who claims to run the official Lebanese Forces website, has tried to rewrite the article to promote the party's propaganda. I told him that we cannot have POV on Wikipedia. I agreed with a lot of the POV by the way, but it is not acceptable material for Wikipedia. He refused to accept that, and for the last 48 hours, he and I have been constantly reverting and counter-reverting each other. Now, I'd be the last to claim that my version is perfectly correct. But his version is POV which is not even subtle. As of this moment, the version that's "up" is mostly mine, but by the time you read this, it will probably be his again.

I think that you, being Lebanese, would have a more objective understanding that I have of the article, and I will defer to your judgement. I'm sending an identical message to User:Equitor. Please check the recent edit history of the article. Thank you! David Cannon 01:23, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

WikiProject Templates

Although I was not the one who created Wikipedia:WikiProject Templates (originally it was User:Stevertigo), I did try to make it look more like an active WikiProject and not just an empty copy of the WikiProject creation boilerplate Template:WikiProject (there is a long and boring story of why I show in the article history as the project creator)). I did plan to eventually get back to the Template WP and do more work, but I am currently trying to turn the Southern California WikiProject into a viable WP. I will, however, try to help out in any way that I can.

You might want to take a look at the organization of the SoCal WikiProject, which has been drastically modified from the WP boilerplate into what I think is a more workable arraingement. Eventually I'll probably change the Template:WikiProject to match, but that's way down on my list of ToDo's.

The Template WikiProject has much to do. One of the biggest problems is that much like the rest of the Wikipedia, there is very little documentation, while at the same time there are plenty of undocumented "traditions" going on at TFD, etc. And then there is the problem of trying to keep on top of sometimes not-well-publicized "standardization" efforts (such as the new Wikipedia:Infobox standardisation). I was going to add that to the descendent projects, but for some reason you just deleted that section.

The efforts of the Template WP should probably start small while it builds up a critical number of participants (recruiting some of the more active participants at TFD and Wikipedia:Template standardisation). Once that happens I think that it should undertake a major search through the Template namespace (similar to the efforts of the Stub-sorting WikiProject) where all the unused templates will get nominated for deletion, all the useful but poorly documented templates will get documentation, and all the badly designed but potentially useful templates will get redesigned.

My guess, from a rather hapazardly going through of the Template namespace, is that 5-10% of the templates can be speedy deleted as user tests, plus another 10-20% are probably not used at all and will quickly pass a nomination at TFD. There probably should be some expansion of the criteria of speedy deletion of templates, but all the proposals so far have not passed consensus, mostly because each proposal still had problems with the chance of false positives. Conservation status of Tasmanian devil

I didn't quite understood the reason for removing the conservation status of the Tasmanian devil, even if it's from an IUCN source. Could you clarify? CG 07:58, September 9, 2005 (UTC)

The problem with the ICUN status is that is an opinion of the ICUN that actually bears no relation to conservation status in Australia. Australia has its own laws and so on for ranking threatened speices, and so far the Devil is not listed as a threatened species here. I also think that the lower concern ranks aren't actually worth adding to a taxobox and only the more severe ranks (theatened, endandered etc.) should be included.--nixie 08:04, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

I don't know whether you have noticed further ramifications of this in Syria, where he has repeatedly been adding detailed information about the presence of Syrian workers in Lebanon quoting "Lebanese scholar Habib Issa". As a result of reverting over this, Yuber has now got himself banned from editing that article. I am a new student of french language. I find it fascinatingly precise, elegant, and a delight to hear spoken. I began my study with an overriding desire, to one day perform my own translation of Bastiat's 'La Loi' (June, 1850). Not to take anything from Dean Russell's popular english translation, but on such a subject, I feel it quite important to read the original for myself. Is that the kind of thing you were speaking of at the pump? I would be interested in building multilingual pages for both the pamphlet, and its author. French Collaboration/Translations --- putting the plan into action

For starting a new French collaboration project, see the info on Wikipedia:Collaborations. Before starting the French page, I see two questions that need to be answered by the group at large:

1. Should there be an indication of frequency (e.g. "of the week") in the page/project title (like Wikipedia:Spanish Translation of the Week) or should there be none (like Wikipedia:European Union collaboration).
2. Should we go with "collaboration" or "translation"? I myself am a little apprehensive of the title "Wikipedia:French Collaboration" for obvious historical reasons. "Wikipedia:French Translation of the Week" however seems a little dull. Maybe "Wikipedia:French Collaboration Project" or Wikipedia:France Collaboration"?

I'm not sure all working together on an article each week would be the best way to organize this project; it seems that that might result in a lot of duplicated effort. I agree with you. I'm not a big fan of the "of the week" task. I'm more for a list of high-priority translations (perhaps by subject matter... Thank you for your comments, but I think that we should emphasise on the "collaboration" term, I would prefer we work hard on one article for an amount of time, rather than working on many things at a time. I prefer not to put "of the week" in the title of the effort, because we may discover that some articles take more than a week, and others take less. "French Collaboration Project" would be OK. "France Collaboration" seems to imply that we would only translate articles on topics pertaining to France, and I think that this restricts the scope of the project unnecessarily. Perhaps something like the "French Featured Articles Collaborative Translation Team"? Just my 2 cents here: I think we should go along with the procedure and the name of the Spanish collaboration (only monthly); this is a good working project (btw, they don't have much of a problem with redundancies). And a little bythought: let's try keep this as uninformal as possible, and do not put to much strain on everyone by making high priority tasks et al.; also, don't pour to much in it for the beginning (as the idea above about stubs etc.), but let's just stick to translations at first. Culture of Asia

Please reconsider your support of the expansion of the culture of Asia article and consider nominating it for deletion. There is nothing unifying about cultures as diverse as Israel, Lebanon, Pakistan, former Soviet Republics, China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, Nepal, Japan... many of these countries have very very little movement or information flow between them... the very idea of "Asia" doesn't even make sense geographically. It's something of a "not Europe, but on the same landmass as Europe..."

Arab League template

Hi, I noticed that you just added {{Arab League}} to the base of each member country. I'm sorry for reverting an effort that must have taken some time, but such templates on country articles have been deprecated for some time, after lengthy discussions at Wikipedia:Wikiproject Countries. Since most countries belong to at least a half dozen international organizations, which creates quite a mess at the bottom of articles when a box is added for each. Another option is a customized international ties template replacing both the geographical and organization boxes, such as is in use on United Kingdom. - SimonP 14:44, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

I agree, the main issue is that international ties templates take a lot of work to create and so far have only been done for major nations. Yes, I can't remember what exactly was not right when I first played with this, but, it firstly has a few technical limitations:

• It does not work for images more than 100px in height
• It does not work for images more than 3 non-breaking spaces in 100px-size font width
• It cannot be placed on the same line as text

By being built using CSS tricks, it also does not work consistently on web browsers without full support thereof, or that need to play games with the CSS themselves. For example, web browsers for mobile phones (such as Opera with its small and medium screen rendering) which have to modify the page layout so that it is suitable for smaller screens display this as an image linked to the image page, or worse (if the image is unable to be displayed at the required width) as the image title text linked to the image page...

So, unless I can find what I may have complained about earlier, I will only say that it should not be used unless necessary. jnothman ^talk 01:52, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Little Boy

Great idea. The fact that translating a complete article may be a long work is responsible for the low activity of this project. Dividing the work in this kind of way would be a good solution. I'm for it. I'm just worried that during this process some information in the English Wikipedia will be erased. Hi. There's no need to keep copying everything I write here and pasting it on my talk page along with your response. We can just keep the conversation on one page (here).

I checked the Arabic article and many of the images it contains are likely to be copyrighted (there are several that I can identify as being taken from various websites), which makes them useless to us.

However, even if some of the images might be useful, I still don't see the logic in the template message you posted on the Kimono article's talk page. The fact remains that the subject is Japanese, and as such the best source is going to be the Japanese article, not a foreign-language article (which may have been translated from Japanese, or for which research may have been done in Japanese anyway). The logic you're using is wrong. Wikipedia's goal is to provide articles about everything in every language. So even the Arabic wiki has the right to write about japan-related articles, and that goes also for the English wikipedia. As for the quality of the Arabic article, I agree that there isn't much we can extract from, but like I said, this template is still small, keep it just for statistical purposes. I think you misunderstand me. I'm certainly not suggesting that we have no right or authority to write about things in other languages. That's not the case at all. But if you agree that the images in the Arabic article are not of much use to us, then why is Arabic specifically listed in the Wikiproject Echo template you have placed on the Kimono talk page? It would seem to make a lot more sense to place a link there to the Japanese article. If it's because the article in question was a FA on Arabic Wikipedia, then surely the place to put that template would be on the Arabic- language article talk page? The only reason this template is put is that the Arabic version of the article is a FA in the Arabic wiki regardless of wether it's really useful or the Arabic FA criterias are low. There's surely a lot of articles better than the Arabic one even though it's featured, but this project just aims at gathering a list of FAs in each language regardless of the content of the article. Translation request

Hello, I saw that you are a native speaker of Arabic, so I would like to ask you if you could take a look at 2003 invasion of Iraq and Iraq War. There is a featured article in Arabic which we would like to know how it could be used the English one which is of course dominated by people who have either been there as soldiers or have their knowledge from western media. Someone also asked if the section about "related propaganda and phrases" could be amplified with information about the Iraqi side. The remaining four weeks of the New Zealand chart trajectory for the song is in the template above that reads "New Zealand Singles Chart trajectory". It has been expanded to 17 weeks, one week longer than the song's stay on the UK chart. Once this is added, I believe that the trajectory is complete! The information comes from RIANZ itself. By the way, even though the chart trajectory graph is now complete, could I request that you remove the final portion reading from 101 – 110? Lebanon

I'd be delighted to help, though I'm not sure how much time I'll be able to put into it. I agree that the current version is very faulty ("like other artificial states"? As opposed to all the natural states out there, I suppose?)? I have two of Kamal Salibi's books on Lebanese history and Samir Kassir's excellent history of Beirut at home anyway, which may be of some use.

I generally agree with your three recommendations. One thing I find rather annoying is when things that have been in the news recently takes up a ridiculous amount of space on the article on a country. Translation request (very short text)

Hi CG. I'm interested in writing an article on the freize in the US Supreme Court (which includes a depiction of Muhammad, amongst various other lawgivers), and I'm curious whether the Arabic visible in this image is actually a legitimate quote from the Qur'an, and if so what verse is being quoted. I'm told by Szvest that the Arabic is actually just "a random collection of words in Qur'anic style", and wondered if you'd be willing to give a second opinion. Gallery of Mount Rushmore images

I'm afraid that your deletion of the above article was a bit out of process. CSD AD reads "Any article that has been discussed at Articles for Deletion (et al), where the outcome was to transwiki, and where the transwikification has been properly performed and the author information recorded." There had not been a discussion at AfD resulting in a transwiki outcome at the time of the deletion. Although the result for this gallery would probably have been the same if the AfD had been allowed to run its course, image galleries are not always deleted. There is a full discussion as to why I and others feel that a transwiki to Commons is often not a good option for image galleries at Wikipedia talk:What Wikipedia is not/galleries. The problem is that in order for an article to fit CSD A5 there has to be a completed AfD with the result of transwiki. This is not what happened. From the time that it was nominated until the time it was deleted was only a few hours, and if I am reading the time stamps correctly, the only result of the AfD at the time the article was deleted was that ONE editor had voted speedy. This is not the same as getting a result of speedy from AfD. Please understand that I am not asserting that this gallery should have been kept, given the chance I would have voted to delete it. However, I feel strongly that SOME galleries are a vauable addition to wikipedia and that the proper place for them is at Wikipedia, not at Commons. I understand that this is not a universally held opinion, but it is also not an isolated one. It bothers me to think that one of the galleries that I do think should be kept can be nominated, transwikied and deleted within the space of few hours. Dsmdgold 18:43, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Michel Aoun, again

Hi CG, can you maybe take another look at this hagiography article? It is flitting between a version with a slight anti-Aoun POV and accuracy issues and one with a huge pro-Aoun POV and accuracy issues. There is probably not much point in me doing anything about it as it has now also attracted the attentions of a very determined editor who definitely doesn't seem to like me.

You might also like to have a look at Syrian occupation of Lebanon, specifically with regard to it being back there again and not at Syrian presence in Lebanon. Any more ideas for a fully accurate and NPOV title?

At present, Lebanon/Temp is considered by the software to be a seperate article, and can therefore be found using "Random Page". As the ability to make subpages in the article: space has been removed, in order to make it a subpage, it should be moved to Talk:Lebanon/Temp.
