April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
• updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

A-Square Shock Power Index

Hello Cavalryman V31, in german wp we have an article about de:A-Square Shock Power Index (ASPI) (read translated). Did you ever read about this? Here in en:WP i found the company-article A-Square and the bio of Arthur Alphin. Perhaps some lines about the ASPI should be found in this articles ? Oh thanks, I never heard about the Taylor KO Factor. By this it seems to me that this are two indices which have been developed by weapons-specialist. As always the target of such technical indices & measurements are to make things comparable. In Terminal ballistics or Sectional density I can read about some physically basics which cover nearly from "pea gun" till heavy artillery. In Hydrostatic shock (firearms) i find "Ammunition selection for hunting" ... sorrowfully nowhere it can be read why ducks or rabbits can be shot without complete penetration of their body’s ... even in Shotgun shell i fount no hint. BTW ... (not to begin with Leonardo da Vinci s. Category:Ballistics experts) it was Carl Cranz who was one of the early scientists to publish mathematically based works on ballistics. One of the most competent scientists is de:Beat P. Kneubuehl who published very good infos and some book like this. Well ... excuse me if I have written somehow too extensive ... I'm just think about improving similar deficits in german WP and it is just to nice writing with a colleague who has the background to understand the context of this knowledge area. I'm lucky about each contact with collegues who know what they are writing/talking about. Sorrowfully we lost good authors in germany ... they were just fed up with discussion concerning non technical views of firearms etc. Because WP moves more and more to a politically-platform my enjoyment of work has also diminished somehow. The Taylor KO factor page has been on my list of pages to improve for some time now, I really need to get it done. As you say, it's an attempt by an experienced hunter to establish a practical tool to compare killing power, or in Taylor's case "knock out" value. To Taylor, a knock out meant the elephant was sufficiently stunned by the hit that he would not immediately turn on the hunter. Both Taylor and James H. Sutherland write about elephants being shot and the hunter moving on, only to return later to find the elephant gone. Both men tell stories about their men digging old large bore bullets from the skulls of freshly shot elephant and of shooting elephants without tails, an indication that it was shot and assumed dead by a hunter who has cut its tail off as a trophy. Whilst I have no experience in elephant shooting, I imagine its value is as a comparison between Nitro Express and similar large bore cartridges. Well shooting elephants is like old times story’s for me and 99,9 % of hunters. With the change to non-lead-bullets german government felt a need to have new guidelines for hunters to assure that animals receive their "one-shot-kill". Scientific researches for implementing these new laws have been made by Prof. Kneubuehl and can be read here. This study does not reflect on any shock at impact. The new way of interpreting seems to regard the energy given to the target f.e. Joule/cm³ (for energy transfer) and Joule/cm (for depth) see page 3 of the study. A pitty that I can't offer you a translation of this document. Based on this new studies I feel that old indices (refering on E0) from practical people as hunters or ammo-manufactures can get obsolete due to scientific progress. In Fact: critical for the impact is the energy which reaches the target ... not the energy which leaves any barrel. Based on this the new laws have a focus on distances for bullets. Well ... for wikipedia ... what to do? I asked myself. Old measurement methods should have an info about the latest scientific state ... trying to correct them is like changing old history. Problematic is also the "shock" ... which shock is referred to? Hydrostatic_shock_(firearms)#Remote_cerebral_effects_of_ballistic_pressure_waves ?? Background: this historic 10-11mm calibres are still at work for hunting in swizzerland. In Kanton-Graubünden they are obligatoric-minimum-calibre !!! (see translation legal affairs and translation history and translation News 2017 and article 10,3 x 60 R). Modern variants:[1] + [2] .... Ｔｏｍ, apologies for not getting back to you sooner. Yes not in the US, a simple soldier down here in Australia. Do you shoot over your Pudelpointer? We don't have many of them here (I've never seen one), but I've read very good things about them. I have a very small German Shorthaired Pointer (19kg) that I shoot over, predominately we shoot quail and duck in the season, along with hare, rabbit, fox and a few kangaroos (which are in plague proportions in many areas but their hunting is strictly controlled) all year round. Hello Mate, nice to read you. Hunting possibility’s in Germany vary very much according to the areas. That should not differ down-under. My area you can compare with the snowy-mountains. So here I have Wild boar, Roe deer, Red deer and European mouflon around here. Rabbits, Ducks, Pheasants etc. are almost not present. Nevertheless the dog has done his "Matriculation examination" see translation for hunting. I've never seen a dog as much addicted to birds of every kind. Ｔｏｍ, I'm very jealous of what you have available to hunt, here in Victoria we do have some introduced Sambur deer in our high country and a few pockets of Red deer and Fallow deer, but they are quite rare. There are no wild boar in Australia, just feral pigs which are mainly found in New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory, I have only been pig hunting a few times when I was stationed in the Northern Territory. It would be exiting to me to read more of your options. For shure ... different views are always exiting :-) Here you can see a translated Static about hunting results in Germany. Hunting of the (very intelligent) Wild Boars is a main job here which needs to be done here, because of the population growth and the damage they do in agriculture. I have a permanent invitation to do this and could go for them each night. My private Statistic-Calculation is, that you approximately spend about 3 hours awaiting for 1 kilogramm wild boar, which makes it less attractive to me as a continuous job. Additionally you have to meet the vet for Trichinellaexamination in each case for wild boars. Fox, Racoon etc. are more or less free to take, but if you do so, it limits your chances for the others. Roe deer I may have 2 to 3 each year. About 3 times in wintertime I can attend Hunting party’s. To me these are the highlights of the year. Red deer and European mouflon I might see, chances for allowance to shoot them are rare. Our hunting system in germany is rather complicated but it works well. Mixing deer populations is regarded very strictly in Germany in order to avoid hydrides. Fallow deers are only allowed for some breeders in closed areas. We have some areas with Sika deer. Ideas to handle this populations differ since years. An absolute no go are Razorbacks ... whenever they get known action is taken to avoid hydrides. If you take a second look in they first mentioned statistic you see a massive loss in rabbits and birds like pheasants etc. which has it's background in agricultural changes. Last not least a more and more rising problem-candidate is the racoon. Read Raccoon#Distribution_in_Germany. Ｔｏｍ, yes Buffalo hunting is something I hope to do one day, in the Northern Territory we have large numbers of Water Buffalo near Darwin and throughout Arnhem Land and also Banteng on the Cobourg Peninsula. Most of them are on private land or native title land so unless you know someone it can be quite expensive to hunt them. When I was stationed up there we used to see them occasionally on some of the training ranges but I never had an opportunity to hunt them. It seems most of the good things to hunt here are introduced, kangaroo shooting is not particularly challenging, I have shot over 100 in a night (kulling, in some areas there are tens of thousands and they do colossal damage to agricultural land) with a .22 WMR rifle, which is probably the most common cartridge used for kangaroo shooting here. It is always a problem if species get a Pest (organism) like Cane toads in Australia or others. Australia has it's problems ... also in germany we have problems with Invasive species. From raccon or Marbled crayfish to Heracleum mantegazzianum. In some cases hunting can help - in most cases mankind is helpless. In the last 2 years there have been massive requests here to decrease the wild boar population because of the fear of African swine fever virus. But as it is: you can lower some populations ... you will never get them all ... even if Myxomatosis#Australia or Rabbit_haemorrhagic_disease#Australia is used. It took about 300 years to eliminate the wolf in western europe ... after the fall of Iron Curtain they are coming back ... with protection of International Union for Conservation of Nature. Case capacities

I used the database contained in the QuickLOAD ballistic software. I loved your infobox solution regarding the rimmed 6.5×57mmR variant. I added that solution to the 7×57mm Mauser article. These two cartridges are by no means the only German cartridge designs that have a rimless and rimmed variant, as break-action hunting rifles are rather common over there. What cartridge case capacities do you want to know? I can look if QuickLOAD has them listed. --Francis Flinch (talk) 13:30, 15 December 2018 (UTC)

QuickLOAD probably does not have all old low pressure chamberings in its database, so when in doubt regarding nomenclature, I provided several case capacities in cm³/ml:

• .275 No 2 Magnum .275 Belted Riml. N.E. H&H 4.94, .275 Flanged Mag. N.E. H&H 4.87, .275 H.V. Rigby (Rimless) 3.57
