Featured portals

Well, I'm very busy at the moment (after being promoted to be a VP in a Chinese student club in my campus, have to host meetings with execs and negotiate sponsorship deals) and on top of that, I need to keep up my work in university.

My idea would be very bold, but we need to change the Main Page so that people are aware of portals. The first box (that says "Welcome to Wikipedia...) and its layout can be altered to attract more attention, but that would need the community to approve such changes. OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:22, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sounds like an interesting idea go forward with. —Giggy 08:40, 12 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Should that RfA be put in all the "failed RfA" categories? It looks like it was transcluded, opposed, and closed, all without his knowledge. Gwynand | TalkContribs 17:36, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

If by failed categories you mean, WP:RFAF etc. that has been done. Rudget (logs) 17:38, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Martin4647

Hi Rudget, can you please revert your addition of this RfA to Wikipedia:Unsuccessful adminship candidacies/M? After a discussion, Tenpoundhammer reverted his transclusion of the RfA, and I've restored the pre-transclusion version. It's unfair to penalize the candidate if it was never them who transcluded their RfA: the RfA should not be marked as unsuccessful if it shouldn't have taken place to begin with. Thanks! Already did :-) (in both places)Keeper | 76 | what's in a name? 17:39, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I was unaware of such a discussion, my bad. I'll restore the pre-transcluded version, but I think the past participators will be confused somewhat. You'll probably need to contact them also. Rudget (logs) 17:40, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm thinking it should be either deleted (with martin's approval), or restored to pre-trans. Keeper | 76 | what's in a name? 17:41, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

For the image that is going to be displayed, do you delete the image, protect it and apply the relevant template message about "admins only editing" etc?

Instructions are on the next update and update pages, but since you asked:

  • If the image is on commons, you have to download a copy to your PC using the same name, then upload it to en.wikipedia and add a {{c-protected}} tag to it. You must also copy the image copyright info from the commons pic to the newly uploaded en.wikipedia pic (I just copy the whole commons image text). Once the image is finished displaying on the mainpage, just delete the en.wikipedia image.
  • If the image is already on en.wikipedia, just add an {{m-protected}} tag to it. Once the image has displayed, just remove the tag and unprotect the image.

Note that you don't actually have to protect the image for display on the front page in either case, since images are automatically protected from editing when displayed there. That's pretty much all there is to it. Gatoclass (talk) 10:26, 12 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome :) Let me know if you have any other queries. Gatoclass (talk) 10:32, 12 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good choice

Good choice for the DYK image. It is a rare opportunity to use a picture of a Japanese person. --BorgQueen (talk) 10:39, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, if you move it to the next update I am sure I can shorten it if necessary. --BorgQueen (talk) 10:49, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Please move your sandbox contents to the next update page, before someone else starts to adding hooks to it. --BorgQueen (talk) 10:54, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Good point, doing now. Rudget (logs) 10:54, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

You seem to have credited me for Magnoliidae, without actually including that hook in the Next update. If you accidentally failed to copy it over from your sandbox, then you should fix that now. If you've decided to hold off on using the nomination, then you should restore it to the noms page for future use. --EncycloPetey (talk) 11:03, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Three bits of advice about DYK: (1) The first item listed should be the one with the picture, so if you choose the nutmeg picture, then the associated hook should come first. (2) If you really like the Masuda picture, and want to save the Masuda article so the picture can be used, it was a 9 July article, so it does have another day of use before it "expires" for DYK purposes. After all, tomorrow's page may will not have as many human heads. (3) It's usually not a good idea to post the DYK notices on talk pages until the Next update is promoted. Sometimes problems are noticed and changes made to the Next update, and posting notices before the promotion can lead to awkward problems if that should happen. --EncycloPetey (talk) 11:23, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
That's kind of you. First time updating was a bit of a mess to be honest, but at least I had you and BorgQueen to assist. Rudget (logs) 11:28, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've been through that DYK experience myself not that long ago. It does get easier after you've done it two or three times. --EncycloPetey (talk) 11:31, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I was a little confused by the {{dyktalk|13 July|2008}} you'd added to Talk:Francis Fox Tuckett, as I couldn't find Francis Fox Tuckett on the main page, then I found the article's DYK nomination still at Template:Did you know/Next update. Regards, Xn4 (talk) 14:05, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nimbley et al

Hello Rudget! I hope all is well. I wondered if you'd be able to take a look at Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Nimbley6 (4th) and advise me (or User:Ddstretch, who I'm working with) on the possible use of a range block and/or check user request. We have two issues: a 12 year old child who is relentless with his sockpuppets and silly edits on Scottish topics, and secondly the possible resurfacing of a banned user (User:Wikipéire) in the guise of User:Malarious and User:MinYinChao (and a couple of comparable ips) who is also causing concern on Scottish/English topics. This is a corner of WP I'm not too hot on. Hope you can help. --Jza84 |  Talk  12:18, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Greater Manchester portal

Hey,

I was thinking of setting up a Greater Manchester portal, but thought it'd put the idea through the WikiProject GM talk first. Jza84 suggested I talked you about it; said you were quite involved with the portal side of Wikipedia.

I wasn't sure if we'd be "allowed" a portal because there already is one for North West England. But I discovered the Cheshire portal last night and saw no why I shouldn't create one for Greater Manchester. Any comments? Is there anything I should be aware of?

Thanks —PolishName 15:31, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't really see why not, but then again, most of the coverage of the NWE portal would simply disappear as it would all have been transferred to this concept portal. Therefore, it'd be a problem; unless of course we delete the NWE portal and make this GM portal. There is no relevant project for Merseyside, Lancashire etc. so I wouldn't expect too much opposition. Rudget (logs) 16:00, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'd also have to remove the featured status. :| Rudget (logs) 16:01, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't really see why the NWE portal would have to be 'shut down', as it were; it is, after all, one of the regions of England. But perhaps we could split it up into smaller portals: i.e., one for each of the counties within NWE. South East England is the only other portal on a region of England, but there are quite a few portals on England's counties (Cornwall, Kent, Yorkshire, etc). I'd be happy to help set them up/maintain these new portals. I've got a bit of a Summer to kill, so time constraints aren't on the agenda right now... —PolishName 15:27, 14 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Aye, but as I say most of the content in this new portal would have to come from the original placeholder (in this case, portal:north west england) and if this were to duplicated in a new sub-portal (Greater Manchester Portal), which I agree should exist, then I have a strong feeling the copied material would make this a strong deletion candidate; unless, of course, you could find new content to select or feature in each new sub-portal section. Rudget (logs) 14:49, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm pretty sure I could find different content to feature in each of the new portals. They are, after all, about (technically) different subjects. If you want, I'll do a 'blueprint' in my sandbox and if you think it all looks like one big copy-edit then I'll drop it. —PolishName 19:06, 17 July 2008 (UTC) (P.S. This might be a few days as I'm pretty busy over the weekend. Thanks for the reminder also!)Reply
Cheers. I'll give you a bell once it's finished. —PolishName 19:13, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

WP:ARBMAC ban

Hello Rudget. Sorry to drop by with the usual unpleasant task, but I needed you to review User:Tocino's participation in the Kosovo topic, and eventually issue a permanent ban per WP:ARBMAC. Tocino keeps plaguing talk pages with his persistent POV rantings, despite being asked multiple times to refrain from such.
Tiny sample of continuous POV disruption on talk pages:

Hello Rudget. Thank you for your reply, and naturally thank you for your thorough and exhaustive analysis of this user's behavior. I accept and endorse your decision to not proceed with a ban right away and instead admonish/monitor Tocino. I acknowledge that Tocino is not the only user misbehaving, and that he has been the target of equally reprehensible behavior himself. But in my view he has been the primary source of trouble in Talk:International reaction to the 2008 Kosovo declaration of independence and I thought that a ban could be in order to halt undue disruption. Nevertheless, I am pleased with a more intensive monitoring of this user for now. Best regards, Húsönd 16:23, 18 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of Image:Carlisle - katedra.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:Carlisle - katedra.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Carlisle - katedra.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi, Rudget, how goes it? To tell you the truth I haven't given much thought to seeking administrator tools. I'm mainly a content editor, so not only do I know very little about the inner workings of the project, but I'm afraid that a janitor position would take away time that is better spent writing articles. DYK Archive

When you archive, can you include the image as well? Thanks. --BorgQueen (talk) 12:58, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes. --BorgQueen (talk) 13:04, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Another thing is that I wonder why you chose only seven hooks for this update, since the right column (ITN and OTD) is longer than usual today and there is a large chunk of blank space under the DYK section. Having one more hook would have been certainly helpful... did you check the main page balance before update? --BorgQueen (talk) 13:41, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Too late now and if you add one more hook the clock will have to be reset because it will give unfair treatment to the new hook otherwise (less time on main page than others). 7 is not maximum, but 8 is, as it is written here. But in practice even 9 hooks are allowed if main page is seriously unbalanced. --BorgQueen (talk) 13:50, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
No worries. No one gets it perfect in the beginning. Btw, can you include link to your talk page in your signature? Everytime I reply to you I have to go to your user page or log first. --BorgQueen (talk) 13:54, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Question on image I uploaded

Dear Rudget, I live in the Pacific Time Zone (California/Washington State/BC Canada)I hope you are able to answer my question. I uploaded this image for the funerary mask of pharaoh Shoshenq II here: Image:Shoshenq II mask.jpg I checked on Commons and there was no image of his mask anywhere; no one has ever placed a free copy of it there. The web site I uploaded the image from states its images are copyright free but for non-commercial use. There is currently no free equivalent of the image and all tourist photography in the Cairo Museum where it is located has been banned since September 2005 except in rare circumstances for scholars. But none of the latter have placed such unique images on Commons.

Can the image be kept under the fair use rationale I provided or must it be deleted? Thank You, Leoboudv (talk) 19:49, 21 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Portal...

Hi Rudget

I've finished the 'blueprint' for the Greater Manchester portal in my sandbox: User:Polishname/test. Incidentally while I was creating it I stumbled across an old Cumbria portal that's not featured on the portal contents page. This would mean we'd only have to create portals for Merseyside and Lancashire if we are to go ahead with my idea. —PolishName 17:29, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

It looks great, I'm just concerned that the North West England portal will be made redundant since a significant amount of that portal's content is in the other and vice versa. Unless of course, we were to create the other two portals you suggest, in which case, I see no problem. Rudget 13:05, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm all up for creating the other ones and I'd be happy to put them up myself. It might take a few weeks, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Anyway, back to the GM portal. Do I just create the page now or is there anything that needs to be done first? —PolishName 16:58, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'll reply to this later on, perhaps at WT:GM. Thanks for your understanding. Rudget 11:24, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I can do it by first thing tomorrow morning. Is that okay? --ROGER DAVIES talk 17:13, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pretty much there but the questions have grown :)))) Any supplementary questions or revisions you wish to make? --ROGER DAVIES talk 15:15, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

SSSIs

[1]. I've tried on a couple of SSSIs from Surrey's list, and I'm getting this error message. Just thought I'd make you aware incase you're working on any lists of this sort. Hopefully it'll only be temporary and won't take 2 month to fix like the other problem did. Best, Qst (talk) 11:06, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
