Scarlet Macaws In Belize

Scarlet Macaws (Ara macao) are the most magnificent bird of the parrot family. Scarlet macaws are brightly colored birds with feathers ranging in color from yellow to blue to mostly red and can grow up to 35 inches in length. These birds fly at a speed of up to 35 miles per hour. Scarlet macaws form monogamous pair bonds that last for life. A macaw nest in hole of Quamwood trees and lays one to two eggs a year, and after the egg hatches both male and female care for their young. The chick weight approximately 3 to 4 pounds and feed on fruits, nuts and occasionally on flower and nectar. Macaws prefer high elevation riparian (riverine) forests below 1000 m along the upper Macal River and Raspaculo Branch.

Scarlet macaws dwell in the Chiquibul national park in the Cayo District and cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary in the Stann Creek District. But most birds are found in the Chiquibul national park and it is at this reserve where most poaching occurs due to the incursion of guatemalan .

Based on acquired data in the year 1989 the Belizean population of scarlet macaw was 24 birds but in 1996 there were 100 birds south of the cockscomb basin wild life sanctuary. Since, scarlet macaws are endangered species. The chicks during nesting season are threatening for poaching for illegal pet trade . There is fear for extinction if this trend continues however some non-governmental organizations are working in partnership to raise funds to obtain resources to protect nesting of the scarlet macaws.

Organizations involved include Friends for conservation and Development (FCD) and co-manager of Chiquibul National park and Scarlet Six Biomonitoring Team (S6). Efforts made have reduced pouching rate from 90% to 30%. Funds are used to monitor and protect main area where these birds nest. Monitoring takes place twenty four hours a day for four months of the nesting season-May-August to at least have 50 % of the macaws to survive or 32% to maintain a stable population.

Scarlet Macaws are one of the most beautiful birds in Central America and efforts should be made to preserve it.
