Speedy deletion nomination of Recycling lives

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Recycling lives, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. NawlinWiki (talk) 16:35, 27 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Draft of Recycling Lives

edit

Hi Carl. I imagine that this is the article in its pre-deleted state? As you have seen, the Wikipedia sandbox is fragile and not a place to do work. You can copy the text into your own sandbox, though. See the link at the top of any page, right at the top.

My initial reaction to the article is that it confuses me. I can't tell whether it is about the corporation or about the charity. Now, to be fair, each appears to have inherent notability, so meeting WP:GNG is not going to be an issue in either case. And you have a lot of references in reliable sources, so that will not be a problem either.

So is it promotional?

Not irretrievably so, I think. It does have a promotional feel, though. It's hard to describe why I say that. I think it feels to be "about us" rather than "about them". It also feels inaccessible. There is a huge wall of text in the middle that needs to be broken into paragraphs. Each paragraph then requires analysis to see what may be removed without affecting the sense.

I'm not sure I'd have nominated it for speedy deletion, and, were I an admin I'm not sure I'd have deleted the article. I would have suggested a cleanup and copyediting, though. However, other people have different opinions and I am not criticising the nominator nor the deleting admin.

Hope this is some small help? Fiddle Faddle 11:08, 31 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

To be honest it might help. The problem is that there is both a corporate and charity side to the business it is afterall a "social enterprise". I can run through the suggestions though which is an obvious starting point

Thanks for your help thus far

Carl Poxon (talk) 12:56, 31 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

I would make a clear distinction between the commercial and the charity elements. State up front that "Foo is a social business. It has a commercial side and a charitable side." That may give you cues to rejig some text. Fiddle Faddle 13:49, 31 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Nawlinwiki has been very kind and placed the draft at User:Carl Poxon/Recycling lives for you to work on. Give me a yell on my talk page when you've had a crack at it and I'll do my best to offer a useful opinion. There is no rush or deadline, so work quietly, steadily and at your own pace.
When you are nearly ready may I suggest you use the various citation templates such as {{Cite web}} and {{Cite news}} to enhance your references? It's a bit more work, but well worth it.
There is a new button to submit the article in the draft you have now. This alerts a member of the WP:AFC team to give an opinion prior to making it live. This is a good thing, though there can be a short delay. It means you will get more opinions than just mine, something I would recommend. Fiddle Faddle 15:26, 31 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your help and I will pick up with you if you don't mind — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.140.15.230 (talk) 21:34, 31 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

How do I ask for more feedback using the method you suggested 212.36.108.90 (talk) 12:25, 1 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Right, Carl. A couple of us have had a go, the other editor more than I, and Draft:Recycling lives is now awaiting a review by a member of WP:AFC. I see no reason for it not to be accepted. It appears to be notable, is well referenced, and is not promotional. I suggest you just wait and see, now.   Fiddle Faddle 20:34, 1 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Carl - If you belong to this organization, you would also be well-advised to review Wikipedia's plain and simple conflict of interest guide and disclose any affiliation you have with the organization. Editors who are transparent about a personal or professional connection to the subject they're writing about have a much better chance of their edits being accepted. Thanks. --Drm310 (talk) 05:51, 2 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for noticing this, Drm310. I wish I hadn't bothered to help now, but, as you note regarding COI editors, I would have been far happier and perhaps willing to help had Mr Poxon been up front with his status. The organisation is notable, but I am still massively disenchanted. I have flagged the talk page to the effect that this editor is a {{connected contributor}}. I hate it when people game the system to promote their own pet projects. Fiddle Faddle 19:50, 2 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Bit unsure what this is about tbh I was completely unsure as to what to do. honestly not trying to game anything and I am new to all of this. What would you like adding in. By the way Tim why if I was trying to hide anything would I send you a thank you on Linked in? Let me know what I need to add and it will be done

Wikipedia, by consensus, deprecates editors promoting businesses with which they are involved. While such acts are commonplace they also tend to devalue the encyclopaedia. Being scrupulously fair, you made a decent fist of writing relatively neutral text. The entities are also notable. The article may or may not be judged to be worthy of inclusion. But the rules of this bizarre community of editors mean that a linkage needs to be disclosed. Thus I feel hoodwinked in some manner, though I suspect you did not set out to hoodwink.
Last time I checked LinkedIn there were several people with the credentials I use here.
Please now use your skills to edit Wikipedia in areas you are unconnected with. It's actually weirdly good fun. It gives something back, much like recycling a life. Fiddle Faddle 21:40, 3 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

If you feel hoodwinked I am truly sorry. It was not my intention. I truly believe the charity deserved to have an article and have approached it according to all the rules I could find within the time constraints of my working life. Once again thank you to you and the other editors. Could you also advise the code you used to mark this as conflict of interest. Genuinely my first escapade into wikipedia. I have already been asked how you would go about suggesting other articles by friends. Obviously I cannot carry this out given the information you have passed but would like to know how to suggest inclusions. Thanks again for all your help. Connect with me on linked in and we can have a proper chat. Carl Poxon (talk) 08:07, 4 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

There are two elements. If you look at the article you will see that it is flagged so on the front, and that, on the talk page there is a template {{Connected contributor}}.
Nothing prevents you from creating articles that you have no connection with. There is no restriction. It is simply those where you have a connection that you need to avoid creating or editing.
Have a look at WP:Requested articles. The process works, though requires that the matter catches somsone's eye. Fiddle Faddle 08:24, 4 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for all your help
