License tagging for Image:QLVNCH M-47b.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:QLVNCH M-47b.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 05:11, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

NVA vs VPA

I notice that you changed the references in Battle of Hamburger Hill from NVA to VPA. I also see you're editing a bunch of similar articles. I am not a Viet Nam expert, but I thought that it was the NVA at the time. Is the "Vietnam People's Army" the proper translation of it's name and we've just been using the name westerners chose for it? --Habap 16:15, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Ooops. Followed the link for Vietnam People's Army and see it clearly now. I imagine this will be a firestorm, but looks like you are more accurate. --Habap 16:17, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

NVA vs VPA

That's right, the term "Vietnam People's Army" is actually the name of the then DRV armed forces and the current Vietnamese armed forces, NVA is the term commonly used in the West. I only want to correct that;)

On the Việtnam War

Hello. I noticed your deletion of China from the combatants list on the Việtnam War article. I'd just like your reason for this. Also, I've had trouble implementing changes from NVA to VPA, or even NVA to PAVN, as they are always reverted quickly. Do you have any thoughts on that? Thank you. Respectfully, Ionius Mundus 16:48, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

You're certainly right about the VPA, but it is always reverted when I change it. Calling the VPA the NVA is like calling the ARVN the SVA. Can you just get me some citation that the Chinese didn't really fight in Việtnam? Then I will agree with you on that. I don't know much about the Chinese in Việtnam. --Ionius Mundus 06:37, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
From what I heard the Chinese were responsible for repairing roads along the border with the DRV. No combatants, there is evidence to show that the Chinese sent fighting forces. But I will find something for you;)Canpark 11:52, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

License tag for Image:QDNDVN T-55c1.jpg

You claim to be the creator of the image. Is that to say that you were a photographer on the spot in 1973 taking this picture? If so, fine, but if not, then you are in no position to say you are its creator and are releasing it to the public domain. - Jmabel | Talk 21:00, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I got the picture from my grandpa's wartime collection. Can that be removed?Canpark 08:34, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Are you saying your grandfather was the photographer? Or did he just have a copy of someone else's photo? - Jmabel | Talk 16:48, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

To be honest I'm not sure, but I scanned the picture from what look like an original photo.Canpark 06:09, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Wow. OK. That may be a different matter.

If your grandfather was in Hanoi during the war and taking pictures, and if you are the heir to the copyrights, of course these images would be great to have. Is there any chance of sorting out the actual history of these? I'm sure you understand how, on the one hand, these would be great to have (with clean rights to them) but, on the other hand, if they are someone else's intellectual property, and we don't know quite whose, we have to make a clear fair use justification if we want to use them. - Jmabel | Talk 06:20, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

I understand. For that reason now I want to remove the picture because its quite rareCanpark 06:25, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

OK. I'll try to move that forward, then. If you can ever sort this out more clearly, and wish to put them under free license (I recommend GFDL or a CC license instead of public domain, that would be great. - Jmabel | Talk 06:29, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Does Terry de la Mesa Allen, Jr. rate his own wiki-page?

As you were a contributor to the article Battle of Ong Thanh please consider joining the discussion at this link on whether the American leader of the battle Terry de la Mesa Allen, Jr. who died in the fighting is notable enough to deserve his own wiki-page. I intend to enlarge the article but it was speedily deleted within an hour of its creation and now after much discussion it has been undeleted but is under review whether it should be allowed to continue to exist. Originally the person who deleted it placed the following on the Afd discussion page

Persons claim to fame is being the son of a famous US General. He became Lt. Col. (probably with a little help from his daddy), cockily chased some charlies in Vietnam, and got killed in the resulting ambush together with his unit. After his death he had some media coverage due to his famous daddy. Also, his wife left him for a rodeo clown. Two books available and one movie upcoming about the battle. In my opinion borderline notability at best, but as always i am willing to be convinced otherwise.

Thankfully he has been talked into revising this statement to be less insulting but I feel there is much bias against this article for no logical reason - right now the article is just a stub but its hard to expand something if you think its just going to be deleted.--Wowaconia 05:27, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

About the Chinese in Vietnam

While researching the function of categories I came across the communication about the Chinese not fighting in Vietnam. I have a source (member 5th SFG) that claims by direct experience, there were thousands of Chinese fighting in Vietnamese uniforms. Not that it matters to anything. Nor can I document it, as it remains classified by DOD, so its just hearsay. Just FYI.! Richiar 06:04, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Every Battle?

The statement that the U.S. won every battle of the Vietnam Conflict is often trotted out as a salve for the U.S. defeat, and it is, like most such statements, wrong. Check out the fall of the Ashau Special Forces Camp in 1965, the sapper attack on Firebase Mary Ann in 1971, or the most humiliating defeat the U.S. suffered in Vietnam, the fall of Kham Duc in May, 1968. Perhaps the most revealing answer to the statement was received by Col. Harry Summers after he tried to pass it off on a PAVN general in Hanoi during the post-conflict period. The answer was that yes, the U.S. did win the large majority of the battles, but it was also irrelevent to the outcome. RM Gillespie 11:16, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Vietnam war

Hey, I read both of those articles and it seems to me that it most certanly was not an Australian victory. The soldiers themselves said in contrast to their commanders that they WERE beaten by the Viet Cong. However the Viet Cong themselves were not able to overrun the Australian force even if they inflicted heavy casualties on them. So I would put in the result part of the article that it was Indecisive (both sides suffered heavy losses). I say both sides because intelegence estimated around 50-70 vietnamese casualties and the Australian suffered 35 casualties, that's more than a platoon. Top Gun

Vietnam War battles in 1950s

The Vietnam War is considered to start in 1955. But look at the Template:Campaignbox Vietnam War, we only have articles about the battles that occured only from 1960 or 61 onward. I hope we can find more sources to write more articles about the military actions of war from 1955 to 1961. By the way, should we add North Vietnamese invasion of Laos to the template? Because this event was part of the Laotian Civil War, and this war was also part of the Vietnam War. 207.233.71.165 (talk) 19:53, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

Laos was very much a part of the Vietnam War, therefore I think we should add it to the template. As for the battles which occurred during the 1950's, I will work on it when I find the sources. I am absolutely determined to provide more Vietnamese-oriented articles on wikipedia.Canpark (talk) 08:14, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
