Help with Father Damien Article edit

After finding out that one of the sources was under scrutiny for "artistic license," I placed a Factual Accuracy Disputed tag, and made my reasons clear on the talk page. Two anonymous IP's have vandalized my comments (one deleted it, was then reverted, only to have another alter my comments and remove the signature with timestamp.), only then I find out that the second vandal actually added the source without contributing to the article itself.

Now i'm kinda stumped on where to go. Do I add a disclaimer to the source citing Artistic License, or just delete it, and leaving the explanation on the talk page? I've mocked-up the choices, one to add to the source listing already in place, or outright deletion and add the note to the Discussion page?--293.xx.xxx.xx 08:10, 2 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'll drop by once in a while on the article and eventually remove the tag, plus I have this nagging feeling that the anonymous IP's could've either been in the employ of the author or the publishing company to plant the book in as an adversiment or subtle viral marketing ploy of some sort. Just an paranoid guess. I really don't think the article got poisoned by the book, just the book was cited as a reference after the fact.--293.xx.xxx.xx 08:44, 2 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oglebay Park edit

In response to
This came up at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Miscellaneous#Will you review my article "Oglebay Park/Temp"?. I looked at the orignal article which you had marked as a copyvio. If you take a look at Wikipedia:Copyrights#If you find a copyright infringement you can just revert back or remove the part that's a copyvio. I've done that now and stuck out the section on Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2006 April 30. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 04:45, 2 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I wasn't aware that you didn't have to mark a section as a copyvio and report it; that you could just delete it and add a message on the talk page, so long as it wasn't the entire article that was a copyvio. Thanks so much for taking the time to tell me. Also, I merged the article from Oglebay Park/Temp into the main article. Thanks again. —Mets501talk 21:30, 2 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

A landslide victory for The JPS (aka RFA thanks) edit

Hey, CambridgeBayWeather/Archive08, thank you so much for your vote and comments in my RfA, which passed with an overwhelming consensus of 95/2/2. " If this isn't an implication that the words come from the Species at Risk Act, what is it? Also, do you really think "oh shut up" has a place in an argument? It's provocative and unnecessary. Tristan and Iseult edit

The difference is that everything on Tristan and Iseult is about some version of the same legend, and many of the versions are called "Tristan and Isolde" or something similar. If we disambiguated to everything called that in the header, it would be way too long. Re Foxe Peninsula (et al?) "clean up" using AWB edit

Hi CambridgeBayWeather,

(clean up using AWB)

Foxe Peninsula still happens to be on my watchlist, so your recent edit has left me wondering whether you or AWB itself automatically moved above Nunavut-geo-stub...?  I suspect it's the latter, in which case I'm minded to ask User:Bluemoose to review and/or make optional this behaviour. Thanks, David Kernow 16:49, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

It apeears to be the default of the AWB but don't hold Martin responsible it was myself that choose to accept the edit...

Thanks for your reply – as it seems this behaviour is an AWB default, I'll enquire after it; I'm not convinced it should be presented fait accompli regardless of whether an AWB user then accepts it or not. I've made my initial enquiry here. (Perhaps better made elsewhere?)  Regards, David 16:02, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Jones Sound, Kennedy Channel edit

Port Leopold, Prince Leopold Island and Elwin Bay, Queen Maud Gulf, Victoria Island (Canada) edit

I see you've continued as above with the above... You don't find placing stubs above categories – i.e. not as they then appear on the page – unwise, especially in case any new editors happen to wander by...?  (Another reason why I use the "<!--Categories-->" and "<!--Other languages-->" comments, until this ever comes to pass..)  Yours, David 02:22, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your prompt response, CambridgeBayWeather (short form "Cambridge" or "Cantab" or...?). I've copied most of the below to Querying category/stub order apparently used by AWB as default to save my rewriting it there:

I was basing it on the reply from SeventyThree at Querying category/stub order apparently used by AWB as default ...

Apologies; I hadn't yet spotted the additions to Querying category/stub order apparently used by AWB as default. Having just read them, however, it seems to me that there's no consensus for the order category-stub. Bluemoose/Martin links to this, where the order is stub-category (albeit poorly spaced); and Valentinian states his preference as "stub templates + categories + interwiki links", i.e. stub-category(-interwiki). I'm puzzled by SeventyThree's observation that "People seem to prefer having the stub-categories after any other categories" as my experience of Wikipedia thus far overwhelmingly indicates the reverse; on those few occasions I have found stubs following categories, it's been on very stubby article pages that have poor/no formatting anyway. Whether editors place stubs above or below categories in a page's source, the software displays the categories at the bottom of the page, so it seems to make sense to me to mimic that ordering. (I suggest all this in lieu of Bugzilla:167, for which I and others have voted, but I guess the powers that be are kept so busy...)

...As an experiment, I've just examined the first five pages with stub/s offered by Special:Randompage: Stjerneborg; Llan Ffestiniog; Naming taboo; Peter Kraus; and Sun Television and Appliances. All have their X-stub entries placed above their entries. I'll try another five anon...
Regards, David Kernow 12:44, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

The other thing I did forget to mention is that in a lot of cases there does need to be a second space before the stub tag to accommodate the picture that is quite often included. In Lamiya Abed Khadawi an extra space would have helped improve the look no matter if the stub was first or last.

If you mean something like...

== External links ==
*

{{Iraq-politician-stub}

...then I agree; the above is how I'd space it. Even without the blank lines either side of Iraq-politican-stub, however, the order is stub-then-categories, i.e. mimicking the order displayed on the page.

I am still missing something, what is the "<!--Categories-->" and "<!--Other languages-->" for? Is that so newer editors don't delete them thinking they are un-needed?

Partly; also simply to mark the transition from article to metadata (in lieu of Bugzilla:167). It's entirely my invention, so am not pushing for its retention by AWB, etc.

Also, if you want to change them back I'm not bothered and won't attempt to revert. I only accepted it because it wa the default and assumed that was the popular/preferred choice...

If someday I ever manage to return to the Canadian articles above, I'll doubtless switch the order. Meanwhile, however, I'm puzzled that AWB presents what seems to me (a) a (re)ordering contrary to what seems Wikipedia's norm (cf example of the first five stub articles found at random), which (b) is a norm that seems sensible as it mimics the order in which the information appears on article pages. I wonder if there's an agenda at work here... I'll ask Martin where a record of the consensus for this categories-then-stubs order might be found – and some indication why it seems to be near-universally ignored...
Thanks for your input, David 17:55, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Dear Sir,

I've tried to give information about OnClassical and other good links which are not commercial. In particular OnClassical is a new recording house similar to Magnatune, born before it but formally in 2004. This is the unique Italian recording house to sell through internet and one of the unique in the world to produce itself recordings. Although actually it has earning = 0 and its CD are available for free through kunstderfuge.com subscription.

Kunst der Fuge is the main resource of classical MIDI files on the net. Files are free and most protected by CC.

I think you may see many and many other website, of minor importance, on the internet. Millions of people love kunstderfuge.com and ever days radio, newspapers and so on talk about onclassical.com.

WikiPedia is or is not a Encyclopaedia, free on the internet?

Please consider my (bad english) words above.

Fair use rationale for Image:Pizza Pops.jpg edit

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Pizza Pops.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rory096 07:22, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

The new speedy deletion criterion, I6 says that all images tagged with fair use or fair use in uploaded after May 4 need an individual rationale of why use of the image constitutes fair use. "nrd" is just the tag, nrd. --Rory096 18:38, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

You may remember that some while ago you assisted me in uploading a star-map on my Big Dipper article. Although it clearly stated that it was a detail of the star-map in the Ursa Major article, that wasn't good enough for ol' Rory, who deleted it — and is now threatening to yank the main map, too, and, one imagines, every constellation article star-map.

Airports edit

I actually happened across the K list while writing up a town that was listed on it; I didn't review the whole set of lists. For what it's worth, though, Wikipedia actually has a rule that every article has to be filed in at least one category — so I don't know if you'd prefer to add the alphabetical lists to that one or to create a different subcategory for them, but they do have to be categorized somewhere. (Category:Members of the Canadian House of Commons is one example of how this can be handled; the alphabetical lists are filed directly in the master category and the individual people are all subcategorized by their province and political party. But, of course, it's not the only valid way to handle it.) Bearcat 18:33, 19 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

VandalProof 1.2 Now Available edit

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. As always, your suggestions for improvement are always appreciated, and I hope that you will find this new version useful. Happy editing! --AmiDaniel (talk) 02:11, 21 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yea hello, already working with Jimbo on it against this Admin, no need for you to butt in at all.

Then maybe you should be looking into what is going on instead of sitting here harrasing me Alan. Being an Admin is a privelege not a right. It can be stripped much faster then it was given. If you must know, I'm dealing with a person who has about 10 sock puppets, 3 regular registered usernames and is an Admin. And it doesn't matter what you believe, do you honestly think people can't pick up a telephone and make phone calls? It works. Just because you have never spoken to Jim doesn't mean no one else ever has. Put this is the back of your head and do what you do best on Wiki. 65.184.17.216 09:03, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fine dude, Teusday morning when I wake up I will call him, I'm not calling him at 5am in the morning on a Sunday. Monday is a national Holiday. Untill then I won't tell you what I really want to, I'll just say that just because you are an admin doesn't mean diddly. It's called Good Faith, do you remember that or do you think you are above Wiki rules? Get some sleep Alan, your paranoia shows65.184.17.216 09:09, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

At this point this is now becoming harrassment, do not contact me again via Wikipedia. That "good" user your talking about is the admin about to be canned for doing EXACTLY what you are doing right now. From now on I will not respond to you, sorry I don't listen to people with a false sense of power.65.184.17.216 09:15, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wally (Green Monster) edit

I know it would be an invasion of the original article but based upon the two articles would it be approate to ulter all the fandom out of that one and put in the original NPOV? Sorry for the agiation, I'm trying to do more than speedy stuff. Yanksox 15:44, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's what I'm doing. Thanks for the advice. Yanksox 15:49, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image:Northwest Territories Kitikmeot Region.png edit

Maps of Northwest Territories

What I think is needed is not just a variant of Image:Nunavut Kitikmeot Region.png - but to be set against the whole of the old Northwest Territories. I've done it with the boundaries of the 5 old regions, as best as I have been able to establish them. See what you think. Do you want maps for Fort Smith and Inuvik Regions as well?--Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 20:54, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well I'll upload the others to Commons anyway in case you or anyone else gets round to writing articles eventually. I've added a summary map to Districts of Northwest Territories.--Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 20:20, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yellowcard edit

Hi, there! I saw that you've contributed to the Yellowcard page. I've been working hard all weekend to get it into an encyclopedia-worthy article, and I think we're almost there!

There's a short list of things that still need some work at the bottom of the talk page. If you could take a look at it, maybe add more things to do, or clean up whatever you see needs work, I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks for your help. Have an awesome day! Cathryn 10:02, 28 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Le Sage's theory of gravitation edit

I need your thoughts on that page. Mine is that it cannot be kept in a locked state indefinitely, and that the editors need to either resolve things themselves or utilize the conflict resolution process. At the least, I am disturbed by Le Sagian being the instigator of the block. He is almost as bad as "Fixwiki"/ELQ22. The big difference is his orientation.

BTW - As long as I am on this topic, is "Fiwiki" (which I place in quotes because he is not a fix for this wiki) a legitimate user name? At least for me, it is mildy offensive. --EMS | Talk 00:47, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for responding. I can tell you that ELQ22, "Fixwiki", the #63... anon, and one or two other IDs are the same person, but the person has now agreed to be "Fixwiki" permanently. I have asked him to reconsider that, but if it is not a bannable name then so be it. (In a way, it speaks of his over-inflated ego anyway.) As for MRE, Barry Mingst, and the rest: They are "Fixwiki"'s nightmare, namely a group of Le Sage gravitation enthisiasts and theorists. MRE is a good guy. Le Sagian I have very serious doubts about (since he shares Fixwiki's lack of a sense what is or is not appropriate), and Barry Mingst I have yet to size up. Let's just say that the thing that sets MRE apart is that he can set aside his biases. Others are too interested in promoting the theory (or at least their variation on it), and "Fixwiki" is too interested in dragging it down.
I will want the protection removed later in the week, and will appreciate it if you would advise me of any future requests to protect this page. I would much prefer that this go into conflict resolution mode, and your protections only delay the day of reckoning. --EMS | Talk 01:37, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the ideas. I will consider them, but for the moment I think the I should give "Fixwiki" a chance to consider my request that he settle on a different handle. I also think that it is up to the other editors of that page to use the conflict resolution process to its fullest. I'll tell you when I think it is time to "pull the plug" on the protection. I have set up a process for deciding on the content and would like to see that through first. --EMS | Talk 02:15, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's time. Please remove the protection. Thanks, --EMS | Talk 03:41, 3 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

the template edit

Looks like it was a long-standing bug. Thanks for pointing it out. :) --Golbez 09:18, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Whoops, never mind. It's needed that way because the page we send it to, off-site, uses only N and E. Which is why you may note the coords in the example you gave give a *negative* number for the East; in other words, West. --Golbez 09:24, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
"I notice that if you use the Template:Coor title d by itself in an article then you can put "W" and get the correct map." What do you mean by this? --Golbez 13:51, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

YSP airport/others edit

Hey, I left a note on Talk:YSP (YSP is a redirect page). I wasn't sure if you were watching it, so I thought I'd just leave you a message. Thanks! --Codeblue87 21:35, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm curious as to why you edited out the external link to wannakitesurf.com - this is becoming a valuable resource to kitesurfers, as wannasurf.com already is for surfers.

Airport articles edit

I seem to remember a while back reading that you had a template/method for creating airport articles automatically when you were creating all the Canada airport articles. Would you happen to still have it available? If so, would it be possible for me to use it? Thanks. --Fozi999 22:39, 31 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

question edit

if someone close to you seems to be heading toward the direction of say someone like, spielberg, or keith herring, or other legendary artists, wouldn't it seem appropriate to keep their news/facts in a place like this? Just wondering.

reply edit

When you left me a message earlier you actually blanked a lot of my talk page, I believe there was a mediawiki bug reported about sections being blanked or something, either way I didnt actually get your message. Martin 08:19, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oh right, thanks, let me know if it could be improved. hhhhmmm how bizarre, I thought I had restored the messages, it looks like it there is something wrong with my talk page, looking at where is choked I think I know what it is, I'll fix it now. Martin 08:28, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Apostrophe abuse edit

Hi CambridgeBayWeather, Thanks for your message on my talk page about apostrophe abuse. I'd really prefer to leave my edit summary as 'apostrophe abuse', as this is a commonly accepted term. As you can see from Google, the phrase gets 241,000 hits: it's certainly acceptable on thousands of web-sites. If more people become aware of the problem, we won't end up with thousands of Wikipedia pages with incorrect usage of apostrophes (as we currently have), and so I prefer (and intend) for this particular edit summary to be quite noticeable. I don't think there is any need to be particularly neutral when it comes to fixing spelling or punctuation mistakes, as no individual is being singled out (ie., hey User:Sample, you can't spell! And your punctuation's lousy!"). Apostrophe abuse affects millions of words each year. Together, we can make a difference. Cheers! :) --Firsfron 05:42, 2 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

You're sense of humor is appreciated. Thats important in all good editor's. ;)--Firsfron 05:48, 2 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

RE: Tanya Tagaq Gillis edit

Hi and thanks for your message! I ordered the CD on Thursday and since I live in Sweden it will probably take a few days for it to arrive – I’m waiting for it with great anticipation.

I’m very curious about Inuit culture and history but I have to say I only have a cursory knowledge of it, and I take every opportunity I get to try and remedy that condition... I might add that my brother’s wife is part Inuit – one of her ancestors was a Greenlandic guestworker in Norway in the early nineteen hundreds. It actually shows in her appearance; she’s got dark hair and almond shaped eyes. Jonas Liljeström 21:55, 2 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
