Quick note
I already left a note at the talk of the author. IMO, there is no problem with the hook. Materialscientist (talk) 00:49, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
- ok. thanks for doing that. obviously no need for the discussion post then. Since I had been the one who had moved it to prep, just felt compelled to address it. However; since its a none issue ... :) kindly Calmer Waters 01:04, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Preps again
We crossed editing prep1. Would you like to fill it up? Quick answer needed. Note that there are too many death-related noms. Materialscientist (talk) 06:29, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
- I'll leave it for you :) Was watching it and was hoping someone was going to set it up. Looks like it on us again for now :) I can do prep 2 if you wish. depends on how you feel about setting up queues tonight. I'm fine either way :) Calmer Waters 06:35, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll fill up ~(at least) one queue. It is again up to what you prefer - filling, refereeing, or something more fun :-) Materialscientist (talk) 06:37, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
- The third sounds interesting. I'll referee some noms and then prepare prep two once your done if its empty so we don't double promote noms. Calmer Waters 06:43, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
- I filled up prep1. Very dark, but so are most of approved hooks. Honestly, I consider the forthcoming update the least viewed of the day and put there less interesting hooks. I'll be on-line another 5-6 hrs, will wait for someone to fill up 2 more preps (for my dead time), and if not seen, do that myself. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 06:55, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Re: DYK nomination of Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Bhuj (New temple)
Hi,
Think u missed it. The cite at the end of the para covers it - reference 1. Around The Globeसत्यमेव जयते 22:33, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
- I went ahead and inserted an additional inline cite at the end of the sentence containing the hook also. It is sometimes redundent; however, it takes care of that sticky little rule:) Should be good to go now and just awaiting promotion. Nice work on the article Calmer Waters 18:48, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Prep area move
I've re-added A Rugrats Chanukah to T:TDYK because to my knowledge it's a Hannukkah hook, which isn't until December 11 or so. Plus, it's in the special holding area for that date and unless you have a good reasoning, I believe we should leave until then.--Giants27(Contribs|WP:CFL) 18:31, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- I had scrolled to far down as I was viewing older noms to move to the prep area. You beat me to the punch for returning it back. Thanks for the heads up. You feel up to preparing a queue? Calmer Waters 18:45, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- I'm busy ATM, but I was planning on getting back into the swing of things at DYK over the holiday so I probably will.--Giants27(Contribs|WP:CFL) 19:06, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Re: Mike Cross hook
Thanks! I saw ALT for that nom and said to myself to use it later, but simply forgot. A blunder. Feel free to continue preps whenever you like. I moved some hooks there just to clean up T:TDYK area. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 07:36, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. I know some times working DYK can be contentious. You have definitely taken a valuable and much needed active role that the project has benefited greatly from. My hopes is that some new and existing editors will help take some of the bulk of promoting off of you. I am more than happy to help when the need arises thru :) Kindly Calmer Waters 07:48, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- Ah no, I would be glad to give initiative to others and stick out only in emergency, or in rare cases when I really feel like take a stand against some nom. I do know I make mistakes every now and then (and take it easy though :) and really appreciate extra eyes looking over my shoulder. Materialscientist (talk) 07:55, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
de Windter of Switzerland Fashion House of Mystery
hi
i just thought there should be a note on who this company is, since there isnt any article on them, and hardly any information to find on the net(i was interessted and searched myself without finding much and i thought wiki had information on everyone, so i looked here, not finding anything, i wrote as much as i was able to find out)
i just thought it strange that theres no information whatsoever, and think that other people might look for the same info, thats all..
if you are interessted, maybe you are able to approach the company yourself, i found an e-mail adress: kim@dewindter.com i got an answer, stating that i am not a customer and they couldnt give me any information. maybe youll be more successful, representing wiki and all..
just found it curious and sort of mysterious, a fashion company, nobody wants to give any info about, and nothing to find on the web, thats all.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.162.204.110 (talk) 17:14, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, unless reliable third party sources start to cover this, there is no need for an article because it has not yet reached a level of notability that is warrented for inclusion. Personally, it apppears nothing more than a marketing scheme. If this changes in the future, feel free to resubmit it. Kindly Calmer Waters 20:55, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
Bararite hook
I replaced that hook by its alt - it was my fault, I forgot to mention in the discussion that not all hooks are factually correct. Never mind. It was great to wake up and see two preps filled up :-) Materialscientist (talk) 23:32, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- Oh. I must admit I was a little confused with the many selections, as to which to move up. I'm glad to have you clarify which one is most appropriate. I attempted to set up the queues for the upcoming time zones as best I could from the selections availible. Please feel free to alter as needed if they can be improved. Prep one is mostly US, where prep 2 is more heavy on European regions. Kindly Calmer Waters 23:46, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- I saw it and its fine. Well, I should back off with my time-zone approach a bit - for example, europeans do want to know about US and otherwise - I just feel that some hooks are way too specific to their region, but some are fine for international audience. You're also right that internet people have unpredicted viewing time. I just know by (anti-vandalism - I "whois" the IPs) experience that some time is more/less busy for US contributions. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 23:52, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
Ali Forney DTK nomination
Hi again. Does the new hook look all right? I can move it to a prep area if so. You done good! Thanks so much for stopping the first one. -SusanLesch (talk) 01:52, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
- Your too nice :). It should be good to go now that you reworded it better, if you would like to move it. Thanks again Calmer Waters 01:58, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
- Done. Thanks for saving DYK's reputation. :-) -SusanLesch (talk) 02:03, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

Cleaning up my mistakes
I saw you cleaned up a few mistakes I left in some AfC's I let through. Thanks! Now, the odds I end up seeing both of Nitida saga and Lady Margaret Hoby at AfD before the week is out... Bradjamesbrown (talk) 12:31, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
- Mistakes? Nah, just a couple of little things here and there. AfD within the week huh? Now thats positive thinking ;-) How about I help reference and cite Lady Margaret Hoby over the next few days or so, and if everything checks out I'll submit to DYK. Now, thats the litmus test. Have a couple thousand readers take a look at it. It sounded interesting. Further research will only help. Kindly Calmer Waters 12:45, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
DYK for Super Falcon Submersible

Good point. I'm going to put it through- it determinately won't fall under WP:V. Any thing you can do to Lady Margaret Hoby would be appreciated- that her diary is the oldest known to survive in English by a woman is interesting, and that information is lifted straight out of the Cambridge source. Great News!!!
Unable to resist bacon's temptations, rogue editors have kicked off the Bacon Challenge 2010 before the New Year even starts! This is a fun and collegial event and all are welcome. There are many non-pork articles for editors who enjoy some sizzle but object to or don't like messing with pig products. This year's event also includes a Bacon WikiCup 2010 for those who may want to keep score and enjoy engaging in friendly competition. Given the critical importance of this subject matter, I know you will want to participate, so remember to sign up today and get started A.S.A.P. ALL ARE WELCOME!!! The more the merrier. Edible gold
This is about your DYK nom Golden Opulence Sundae, its hook "that the world's most expensive ice cream treat, the Golden Opulence Sundae, is made with edible gold" and supporting ref. I am too lazy to check myself :-) and am asking you maybe you know it from heart: Indian sweets contain gold, which is "edible" simply because our body can assume it, that is it is the same gold as any. Gold doesn't easily make chemical compounds, but I can imagine some colloidal material where gold is dispersed physically and becomes easier to assimilate. The question is what "kind of gold" is used in Golden Opulence Sundae? Is it really another type of gold, or not? Looking at the picture, I can tell it is certainly not a solid gold :-) thus the hook is probably valid, but some sort of explanation might be needed for the article. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 00:29, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- Believe it or not, it is truly 23 carat gold. Maybe I can clarify it abit more. I'll provide the diff. Retriving now. Calmer Waters 00:39, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- No doubt, but I don't believe it is only gold - isn't it small pure gold particles dispersed with some edible stuff? Materialscientist (talk) 00:42, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- ahh, I see what you are saying. I saw it on TV the othernight on travel channel where the chief stated that he coated the chocolate with then layers of melted 23 carat gold along with the almonds and before the ice cream is placed in the goblet, very thin 23carat gold foils are placed in side. If you look at the picture you can see a yellow tent to the goblet. it is this sprinkled with small flakes of gold (as is used in certain liquoirs). I attempted to pull the information as much as possible from the article as information obtained visually is not ever as good as that written and verifiable. They don't go into the extreme detail as the show offered Calmer Waters 00:49, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, I was away. I'm going to change the hook to "is covered in edible gold leaf", or, even better, just "is covered in gold", if you don't mind and would explain why: (i) this is what the ref say, but may not always trust the reference - it may be incorrect in phrasing; (ii) "edible .. leaf" is better than "edible gold" - which was my main objection (iii) the trick is that "edible gold" seems to be just thin gold. Humans can eat it but its like eating aluminum foil. If its covering tasty food - its Ok, we don't notice because its thin. I don't think the free-standing bent leaf on top of that ice cream is for eating - it is either for decoration, or there is something tasty inside :-) Which version you'd prefer? Materialscientist (talk) 02:57, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- You would have a greater understanding of this than me :). From what I could make out by reading the sources, the gold leaf used are, as you said, very very thin (couple of microns if I understand correctly) and just break apart or melt when eaten. Yeah, cant imagine it would taste well on its own merits. I also can't verify whether the leaf is something covered in gold leaf, plain gold leaf, or just a decoration as you suggested. I agree that the sources are not very clear and may very well be describing it incorrectly. When attempting to lookup information on edible gold leaf, I was unable to find reliable third party sources. However; Many on regular gold leaf as used in art, electronics, etc. Covered in gold would work, as it is referenced in the article and would hope it would not be takien as misleading as I added sprinkled in 23 carat gold flakes. Thanks for helping me with this. Calmer Waters 03:18, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- The stuff sold in specialty baking supply shops is ordinary gold leaf, nothing added to make it palatable or more edible. It is edible simply because it passes right through the GI tract. I have been meaning to work on the cluster of articles about "culinary" metals. --Una Smith (talk) 17:38, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

Congratulations. Will you nominate them for DYK? I know how hard it can be to think of effective hooks for medical DYKs. --Una Smith (talk) 17:34, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you Una :). I submitted Plexopathy; however, I wasn't able to get my hands on a book that would have helped expand the Anitibiotic-associated article further. I'm still attempting to retrive it. Hooks are indeed far more difficult as trivia really haves no purpose in this articles. I see you are active in WPmedicine. I am still trying to find that balance between having the medical articles understandible to the "average" reader, while still having it academically correct do to the importance of the material. Thanks you again. Kindly Calmer Waters 08:22, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Your first GA nom
Hi there. I see you have just nominated Jim Sanborn at WP:GAN. I'm not going to review it right now, but I had a quick look and thought I would alert you to a few issues that would probably prevent its promotion. The lead should be longer, not just two sentences, and should summarise all the important points in the article. I'd suggest a para summarising his bio, what he does for a living, and perhaps key awards, then a para on his art works and other achievements, including Kryptos. Second, there's too much material lacking in-line citations, particularly the entire biography para, plus the sentence about themes in his work in the next section. These will need cites to get through GA. Just a few thoughts. The article represents some good work, though. Ping me at my talk page if you have any questions. hamiltonstone (talk) 09:12, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for the very quick heads up :) I will indeed work on these areas and the all others that go into meeting the criteria and start addressing them. Thanks for being so understanding, as this is indeed my first GA nomination. Thought it was time I ventured into some new areas. :) Your words are very appreciated :) Kindly Calmer Waters 09:25, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Help with dermatology-related content

stupid
I am stupid. Please teach me how to cite references twice. You helped out on this on "my" article (not really mine).
For example: The sky is blue (reference 1). The sky is not blue when it is cloudy. (reference 2) The blue sky can be explained by physics (reference 1)
How do you name reference 1 so that you don't repeat it twice.
The 1st time you use it, you do ___________ (fill in blank)
The 2nd time you use it, you do ___________ (fill in blank)
Thank you. Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 16:29, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
- Nothing bad about inquiring about this. Everyone has a learning curve for experimenting and refining wikisyntax. I'm still learning new things pretty much on a daily basis :-) as far as you question.
- the first time you use a reference set it up as usual such as
- First instance of reference
- .<ref name="Idestam">{{cite web|url=http://www.kansallisbiografia.fi/english/?id=4296|title=Idestam, Fredrik (1838-1916)|last=Helen|first=Tapio|publisher=Biographical Centre of the Finnish Literature Society|accessdate=2009-03-22}}</ref>
- the second instance
- .<ref name="Idestam"/>
- where the reference usually states <ref>{{cite.... you would add <ref name=>{{cite.... using any one word name or letters to help you remember which ref is what. Then for all following uses of that reference you would just use <ref name=/>.
- WP:citations is very helpful for learning the various different templates that can be used. However, I prefer using the tool in the edit screen for setup when possible. Hope this helps. Kindly Calmer Waters 16:54, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

DYK for Sven-Ivar Seldinger
Great work
Great work creating the new article stubs and redirects. Remember to add any new conditions and/or disease synonyms to the list of cutaneous conditions after you create them. Thanks again for your help! ---kilbad (talk) 00:25, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- I must admit that I am having some difficulties knowing where on the list the place them. Dermatology is not an area of study that I am too familiar with, as the only cases I really have the opportunity to deal directly with at work is the occasional necrotizing fasciitis and the all too familiar MRSA infections, cellulitis, and diabetic ulcers. I am still looking over the dermatology cats to get a feel for where to place them. Question, where can I find the criteria that was used in developing the dermatology cats? Calmer Waters 09:27, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- Generally, if I am not sure, I find out what chapter/section of Bolognia a condition is under, and then categorize the article based on that. For example, I was uncertain where to categorized Janus kinase 3 deficiency (I have difficulties too sometimes!), so I looked at the book, and found the condition to be under "immunodeficiencies," so that gave me some direction for placing it in the Category:Noninfectious immunodeficiency-related cutaneous conditions. So, when you are unsure where to place something, see were Bolognia puts it, and then find out if we have a similar cat. If you are still having trouble after that, just post the condition somewhere at WP:DERM or WP:DERM:MA and we can work together to find a place for it. Again, you're doing a great job! ---kilbad (talk) 14:34, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- Ah yes. Wasn't familiar with that. Will do so in the future :) I will go back and address the prior articles I did that are not within the list and add what categories I can associate from the text as to where they belong. Sometimes the text from the indexed pages provide very little context to obtain a good understanding of the disease or process. I will research those ones I come across further, which should help with finding the correct cats. May take longer; however, should provide a better informed and referenced stub. You are only attempting to start stubs with the Bolognia push 2009 correct? I wouldn't mind going back later to help get some of them to at least start class, while experts in the field such as yourself would be the ones making them verifiably B, C, or even A rated. - The goal of the Bolognia push is to create stubs, but, yes, certainly get some DYK's out of them too if you want! Thanks again. ---kilbad (talk) 18:34, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again. Kindly Calmer Waters 15:27, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Noticed your work on bradycardia. Trying to summarize things into a classification section which will than link to the various subtypes of bradycardia. Not sure if I have it right. Disease synonyms
Make sure that you are only adding disease names/synonyms to the list for which we have a good source (like Bolognia), not just because it is already listed in an existing wikipedia article. For example, is " hemangioma thrombocytopenia syndrome" in bolongia or another source you are using, or did you simply find that unsourced name in the wikipedia article? If you have a source, consider citing that disease synonym. If not, consider removing it from the list.
The only reason I mention this, is that we want to make sure we are citing the disease synonyms we are adding so that the information may be verified. Does that make sense? ---kilbad (talk) 20:15, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yes it does. Will do. ThanksCalmer Waters 20:23, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
Re Karyotype
Just looked at your link from Karyotype to List of cutaneous conditions. The list is very long, though interesting. The link would be more useful if it pointed to the most relevant section in the list by the device "List of cutaneous conditions#Relevant section|List of cutaneous conditions". Otherwise, I don't see what help the link is to the readers of Karyotype. Over to you! Macdonald-ross (talk) 08:00, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
- That is a valid point. I had added it as I have done to numberous articles that had disease processes related to that list. As this article contains a gene for one or more of these conditions, without expansion of that fact within the article, it does appear confusing to have that link. I will go ahead and remove it unless at a later time there is a more straight forward reason warrenting inclusion. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention. Kashi Company DYK
I plan on expanding Kashi Company in the next few days to reach the ~5300 in prose needed for 5x. I have found some information, but I don't know if the source is notable. Is it? Also, I have one more question. Once the article is expanded to the required size, can I re-nominate the article for DYK? —Untitledmind72 (talk) 00:28, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- If you expand it to the 5x needed within the next few days I see no reason we need to remove the nomination and resubmit it. Just give an update at the nomination, or here if you prefer, of when it needs re-evaled. I'll keep an eye on it. Kindly Calmer Waters 02:47, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- Is this enough expansion for nomination? —Untitledmind72 (talk) 02:22, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- You are getting close. currently at 4612 prose. The article right now is primarily sourced from first party references, fine for specific statements; however, the bulk of the article should be from sources independent of the company to ensure NPOV and no COI of the facts. If you can provide some material from these independent secondary sources you should be good to go. Kindly Calmer Waters 03:12, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- I've done it! A 5x expansion 1066 in prose of Kashi Company would have to be at least 5330, and I've expanded it to 5543 in prose! Now, do I need to resubmit it? —Untitledmind72 (talk) 14:29, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- No need to resubmit the nomination. I have checked the hook and article length and has been verified :) Nice job. Calmer Waters 19:07, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow!
Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck! Garden, iMatthew, J Milburn, and The ed17 19:16, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

... but I would discourage your tagging of leukaemias and lymphomas as "circulatory system disorders". Most of them do not involve the circulation, and it would be incorrect to tag them as such. I do realise that some people lump them together, but it creates endless confusion. JFW | T@lk 10:31, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
- Hmmm. I started wondering that. Was debating whether to take out the blood disorders from the list and creating its own leaving List of circulatory system conditions for those under chapter 9 block I of ICD-10 found here. Any suggestions or thoughts? Some of the leukaemias were missing the cat so I placed them. I will cease adding to the list any blood / lymphatic conditions or disorders. Re: Palmoplantar keratoderma
For the list, article titles, and redirects that you are categorizing, I would probably spell out "palmoplantar keratoderma" instead of using "PPK." What do you think? ---kilbad (talk) 18:53, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- Also, many of the PPK disease synonyms you added to the list are already present in the list. ---kilbad (talk) 18:55, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- After thinking about it more, would you allow me to take on the keratoderma section of Bolognia? I think you are taking on probably the most challenging section with regard to derm names/synonyms, and I would love to help. Also allow me to do some minor clean-up to the recent edits to the list? ---kilbad (talk) 23:36, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- absolutely. The keratodermas are really something. The PPKs are listed as both as syn of PPK and then some are listed under a more specific condition, and then still listed under a name that is so similiar but off by maybe two letters (think to self, is this same thing spelled differently or something different spelled similar.) Do I add them to PPK also as a syn as in the book, the specified veriant that it is also under; condition haves many different spellings in different publications, which to use. And you do not need to explain these to me as this is not medical school :-) If you want to do these, now or later on, that is fine with me. I'll go to a different letter. Thanks :-) Kindly Calmer Waters 00:11, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- Ok, I will start working on the letter K. ---kilbad (talk) 04:26, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- So I have finished with the keratodermas, I think, and am into the second, and final, section of K. ---kilbad (talk) 03:53, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
- K is a big one and congrats with the whole animal that is keratodermas :-). I am still working on finishing H. I must say this list is becoming quite extensive and may very well become, in its own right, the definitive list for cutaneous conditions and syns. The further amount of detail that has been provided to the list is impressive and you should be very proud of your diligent work leading this accomplishment. :-) Calmer Waters 04:05, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks again for your help with the dermatology-related content on Wikipedia. We have continued to make significant progress with the Bolognia push. Tagging
The article is entirely sourced to the Dictionary of National Biography (it's a wikified paste). In the references section this is indicated. As therefore the article doesn't need any citations, it doesn't need a tag to that effect. Cheers, Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 02:19, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
DYK preps
I am pulling Choristhemis olivei from the preps because the hook is not in the article and is unclear. I'm not going to edit the prep2 to avoid ec (only restored at T:TDYK). Maybe better to seek a replacement. I was actually quite skeptical of those noms by IShadowed yesterday when assembling the preps .. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 00:25, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Was just going through the articles to make sure no glaring errors. Thanks for catching that. It is nice with so many new users helping referee at DYK lately; however, I have also noticed a few articles getting passed that weren't ready. Have had to question a couple of hooks that have been ticked that were lacking a important factor. Again thanks for the heads up. Kindly Calmer Waters 00:42, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, I also noticed that. A hint for me was a recent feedback on one hook at Main Page:Errors - it was so obvious to me too (entirely wrong hook), but I just missed that up to the main page. We rely on seeing the green ticks too much (me included). There were also several articles with bare-url refs and clear need for copyedit - this I'm trying to do when the hooks are in queues, but I often miss that too. Yesterday, I approved a couple of articles by Stone which I know I should copyedit first (but that's Ok and I will do that shortly). Materialscientist (talk) 00:54, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
About my DYK
Thanks for approving my DYK about Authentic (horse)! I just have two questions, first, generally when will the hook be placed in the queue? And, you also said, "Please extend all reference URLs in future nominated articles for DYK". What does that mean? Thanks! The Arbiter★★★ 00:40, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- (i)Hooks nominated typically take about 7-10 days from the date nominated (date of creation or expansion) to appear on the main page. I have also seen hooks promoted within a day and at times up to two weeks later. Hooks are primarily promoted from the older nominations and oldest dates first; however, to balance to queue (biography, western, eastern, animal, culture, places, etc.) the preparer will pull nominations from newer submissions. Patience is a vertical at DYK and checking your nomination from time to time to watch for questions that may come up is my best suggestion.
- (ii)Bare URLs are references that only contain the http address of the web page used for the citation and reference. Extending the URL allows attribution for the author of the work being cited and given the article a more complete look. I can help expanded them before they appear on the main page if you like.
- example of a bare URL:
- And an expanded URLs of the same cite
- 1. Armitstead, Claire (2008-05-03). "On yer vélo: Claire Armitstead takes a tour round France with the Ondaatje prizewinner". Guardian News and Media. Retrieved 2009-11-04.
- There is a cite tool....when you are in the editing screen, a gray tool bar that has a [cite] box at the end. If you click it, it will give a choice of a couple of different options like Web, book, etc. Click on that and it will open a wizard that allows you to fill in the boxes you need and the tool will set the cite up for you. I find it pretty useful. Thanks again for your recent submission and nice work. Kindly Calmer Waters 01:07, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Wikiproject
Hi! i just wanted to ask how i can make a wikiproject. also sorry i havent made contact with you in a while, i've been busy.Bread Ninja (talk) 16:33, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
- Hello, have you decided what kind of project you would like to start? The first step would be determining the scope of this project and maybe whether it would be best to start a completely new Wiki project, or start a task force in which utilizes resources from an already existing project. Calmer Waters 16:49, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
- I would like to make a task force for the .hack series, seeing as how the playstation task force is not seeing it as a high importance.Bread Ninja (talk) 16:57, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry. Had to do a complete reboot of my computer. One of the best sources of information on the setting up of a wikiproject would be Wikipedia:WikiProject and Wikipedia:WikiProject/Best practices. Also looking at an already successful project in the same genre would be helpful. A good example of one for the area your interested in is the Wikipedia:WikiProject Halo (many featured articles and GAs). Borrowing from that format will help start the process. Next, would be coming up with the name of the project, something maybe like Wikipedia:WikiProject Hack or Wikipedia:WikiProject .Hack. I would then suggest putting up an announcement of this project/task force at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games and the discussion page of the playstation task force. As interested editors sign-up and help, their added experience will help propel the project further. Hope that helps a little to steer you in a general direction. - Hello Julie. First, just add your name to the task force members and be sure to enable your E-mail so a member can give you the needed information to access the source used for the Push? I can also help if you have any questions that come up pertaining to the WP:DERM:MA effort. The editor that is our resident expert on expansion of List of cutaneous conditions through the Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Dermatology task force/Missing articles is kilbad (talk · email). Any questions feel free to ask and again welcome. Kindly Calmer Waters 20:57, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
Featured Pictures
Hi Calmer Waters and welcome to Featured Pictures! I wasn't aware you're new to this project, as I only joined Wikipedia a few months ago, and I remembered your name from DYK. In terms of nominating images for Featured Picture or Valued Picture, if you're unsure of a nomination, it is safe to submit images first at Wikipedia:Picture peer review, although not necessary. Another useful thing to do is a thorough background research on your proposal: (1) check if there are any other FPs in the article(s) the image appears in, (2) check if any images in the article(s) have been formerly proposed as candidates (use the "What links here" tool) and if yes what were the arguments for or against, and (3) see at WP:FP how other current FPs within the same general topic look like (i.e. Wikipedia:Featured pictures/Places/Architecture in the case of Chenonceau). I know it is frustrating when one starts at FPC and nomination after nomination is knocked down. I made four unsuccessful nominations before one was promoted. Ultimately one can only learn by trying. I hope these hints help, and feel free to ask questions. Cheers, Elekhh (talk) 22:19, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
- That is very helpful Elekhh. I see the similar thing over at Did You Know regarding users new to the project. I must admit, I was disappointed to see that the same structure was presented in the past and opposed. I do see that this particular touched-up image appears to address Franklin's rational about the structure being cut off at the ends. Also, appears that the high resolution (5200+ x 2800+px) image keeps even the farthest details crisp. The perspective distortion is greater on this image; however, I would hope this would give a dimension to the structure (length and width), rather than just the profile front that would correct this; thus, losing this unique perspective of a this massive castle built upon a bridge. Everything you have brought up at the project is helpful and I will be sure to utilize these tips in the future. FPC is indeed an excellent and valuable project. Thanks again Elekhh. - Forgot to add that at Valued Pictures you might also find a less bite-ing environment, and may be more successful with images such as WP:Featured picture candidates/Petronas Twin Towers, which may have some issues, are nevertheless valued in a number of articles. For both projects feel free to not only nominate candidates, but also engage in discussions about the merits of other nominations, or do admin work such as closures. (but preferably start with uncontroversial ones :). Elekhh (talk) 23:17, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
- I would also like to help with feedback. I am studying up on the criteria that is looked into when evaluating the nomination, along with the different terminologies used. Everything haves a learning curve and a hope with time I can contribute where needed in a positive fashion. Your feedback is invaluable as always. Thanks again. Marinelli
Thanks for cleaning up Pontificia Fonderia Marinelli. Do you think all the issues with plagiarism and statements not supported by the sources have been fixed now? If not, I'll do another check. Ucucha 15:45, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
- I felt it was the least I could do after mistakenly promoting it as it was. Just when I thought it was ready there are still some of the same issues. I believe I have cleaned up the first three sections; however, the Craftsmanship section that appears to be written well from cite [3],is actually copied word from word from source [2]. I still need to address this section. Disappointing. Was tempted to just write the article from scratch. Thanks for catching this nomination before hitting the main page in the shape it was in. Feel free to slap me with a trout for that one :) Calmer Waters 18:05, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
- I can't deny that it should have been checked more thoroughly before, but let's be happy now that I did catch it before it went on the Main Page. The reason I noticed was actually that the hook was too long (230 b if I recall correctly) and then I went digging a little and found that there was a whole host of problems with the article. I'll look at it on Sunday when it hasn't been fixed yet, won't have time tomorrow. Ucucha 18:25, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Australia Day (26 Jan) DYks
hey there, I see you are currently doing some DYKs for Australia Day (26 January). Is there any chance that I may be able to sneak my expansion of Australia–Russia relations in on 26 January at DYK? Cheers, --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 19:46, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- Is it currently on the T:TDYK page? I personally wouldn't have an issue fast tracking under this request if the hook is approved; however, I currently do not have the ability to promote directly into Queue2 or Queue3 where it would be best to go if this was done. (11am and 5pm Australian time zones). Let me see if I can flag an admin for this. Calmer Waters 20:05, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Editor Review
I reversed your blanking. Unless you truly don't want someone to respond, someone will get to you in a short while. Currently, there are only six unreviewed people on the list, so it's a lot less backlogged than it was. A few more people, including myself, are helping out with clearing it further. Don't worry about the backlog. :) However, if you truly don't want a review any more, then feel free to blank again and I'm sorry for causing you hassle. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 11:38, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
- I agree with Thejadefalcon. There isn't really a backlog now, as reviews are being done more often now - it's not like it was about 3 months ago, when there were something like 30 unreviewed requests. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 11:46, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
- ((e.c.) You beat me to it Steve :), luckily I have picked up the habit of coping text before hitting save page, as some discussions pages are a e.c. battleground)) Oh don't even worry about it. I know well about backlogs (we are dealing with one over at DYK, thru it is nice to have so many new faces) and length of time from posting to review has never really been an issue to me. Was just debating whether to review a few before posting mine, as it is always nice to give when you take. Thanks for checking Thejadefalcon. Feel free to say no!
I have not heard any objections to the Category:Keratodermas, so I wanted to know if you would be interested in helping me setup the category? This would be a new subcat of Category:Papulosquamous hyperkeratotic skin diseases, and, with that being the case, all keratoderma articles and redirects would be moved out of that category, into our new subcat. In addition, we would need a new subheader in the list, under Papulosquamous hyperkeratotic to move all the keratodermas under.
Of course, I realized keratodermas are a real pain, but you do have some experience with them, so I thought I would ask. This task should be easier than sorting all the actual disease names/synonyms. Regardless, thanks again for all your help in the past! ---kilbad (talk) 17:34, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
- Now I am thinking it should be Category:Palmoplantar keratodermas? I started a new possible section at: List_of_cutaneous_conditions#Palmoplantar_keratodermas. ---kilbad (talk) 02:42, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- So this would leave anything non-PPK related out such as Howel–Evans syndrome, a keratoderma, but not PPK related. So how best can I assist you with this? Maybe just start working from Papulosquamous hyperkeratotic skin diseases in the list and move as the articles are recat'ed Calmer Waters 03:00, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- I think that is the perfect approach. Any PPK in the "Papulosquamous hyperkeratotic" section should be moved to the new section at List_of_cutaneous_conditions#Palmoplantar_keratodermas. With regard to Howel–Evans syndrome, I think that syndrome does affect the palmoplatar surfaces, so we could consider moving it to the new PPK section as well? I think Table 57.1 in Bolognia could be a good initial guide for us. Perhaps we should move everything over into the new section of the list before we actually re-categorize anything? ---kilbad (talk) 03:30, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- Good idea, especially with the large number of underlining AKAs involved. Calmer Waters 03:49, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- I replied on my talk page. Also, we now have pretty much all the pure hereditary, acquired, and erythrokeratodermas under the "Palmoplantar keratodermas" section, so that is probably good for now. What do you think? Also, while doing some editing, I also found one redlink. ---kilbad (talk) 23:12, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Page 57.1 is a wonderful resource. heck, the entire book is. It looks like you have started moving the articles within the new subcategory. I can assist as needed with the synonyms as needed working down and making the appropriate redirects as necessary (without cats of course). This project is really something. You should be very proud of the outstanding work you have put into this. Calmer Waters 15:27, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
WikiCup 2010 January newsletter
We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to Sasata (submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than Hunter Kahn (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to Fetchcomms (submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.
Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! WP MED banner
Should be be using the WPMED banner on redirect talk pages? I ask because I don't know. ---kilbad (talk) 21:43, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
- Because these redirects are synonyms of the article and included within a category, rather than a possible misnomer or alternate spelling, I started included the Project banner with a redirect class classification marking it as being within the project's scope. Looking at other tasks forces such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Cardiology task force/Article assessment, they specifiably state to not use a banner on their redirects. Many of our current redirects have boxes and many do not (this may also be do to the moving of article names and remnants left on the talk page). Maybe it would be best to bring this up at the task force project page to see how best to address this and incorporate the results onto the Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Dermatology task force/Assessment page to avoid further non-consistency within the various redirects throughout the project. I will not add further banners and will stick to only providing the rational for its classification based on WP:DERM on those missing it. On another note, I have stated working from the top of the list to ensure that there are not any redirects missing categories and possibly additional synonyms that may have been missed. Also to keep consistency within the list, I stated moving the current synonyms that are being used as the articles title to to the beginning of the entry with the former replacing it within the parenthesis. I managed to only get to Ocular rosacea as there are countless hundreds left. Kindly Calmer Waters 22:21, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
- Your additional double checking of redirects for categories, etc, is greatly appreciated! Also, I think there may be utility in having a "redirect" class on the WPMED banner, as there already is a "category" (see Category talk:Cutaneous conditions for an example). I will start a discussion at WT:MED and see what people think about this. ---kilbad (talk) 02:54, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
- We utilize it also at Articles for creation (ie Talk:Red Hawk (disambiguation)) as a record of those created within the project. I see you have opened a discussion at WP:Med. I believe it may have merit. Calmer Waters 07:15, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

O'Dell (disambiguation)
Thanks for dealing with this Articles for creation/Redirects request. I just realised that I requested it in error - O'Dell has a {{surname}} tag, not a {{disamb}} tag. Maybe it's best to delete O'Dell (disambiguation)? 92.1.93.82 (talk) 14:22, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
- Makes sense. I went ahead and changed the redirect to Odell for now. Calmer Waters 20:46, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
- Re these edits - should the <!-- It does not help to add disambig or hndis tags where the page only contains people who share a surname --> comment in the O'Dell article be left in place or be deleted? 92.3.160.84 (talk) 22:12, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
- Looks like this has now been resolved? Apologies for causing the confusion in the first place. 92.3.160.84 (talk) 03:06, 3 February 2
- Please leave the comment in place. For years it kept people from adding the disambig template (people who had not read WP:DABSUR). I have removed the disambig template. Chris the speller (talk) 03:11, 3 February 2010 (UTC)010 (UTC)
Minor questions
With regard to the Familial Hibernian fever and Tumor necrosis factor receptor associated periodic syndrome terms, would you consider adding citations to the TNF receptor associated periodic syndrome for those synonyms? Also, should the word "Hibernian" be capitalized? I was not sure. ---kilbad (talk) 14:44, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
- Will do now. As far is Familial Hibernian fever, I also wondered the same thing will researching Familial Mediterranean fever that at first to appears to be going against Wikipedia:Naming conventions (capitalization). After beginning a thorough search, it became apparent that Mediterranean was capitalized in almost every case such as [2] [3] [4] and countless other reliable sources. The same has become apparent regards to Familial Hibernian fever [5] [6] [7]. I was writing up rationals to place on the assiciated talk pages before the need to disconnect for the evening/morning. I think everyone is ok with us using banners with class=redirect on dermatology-related talk pages. Therefore, I think we can probably update the page to reflect that. Would you be interested in re-vamping the above assessment page? Or would you like me to do it? I would be fine with either way. ---kilbad (talk) 22:50, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- Went ahead and set up the sub-category header for the task force Category:Redirect-Class dermatology articles and it looks like Headbomb set up the redirect catagory for WPMED at Category:Redirect-Class medicine articles. Now; how best to word both its function and use on the assessment page? Calmer Waters 08:19, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

At Template:Did you know/Preparation area 2, which has an inuse template, there is one quote mark too many after "pictured" on the first hook. File renaming spree takeover
I see that you're filling in for User:TheDJ on a file renaming spree. Or are you just on one of your own? Whatever it is, keep up the good work. Having said that, I wonder if anybody else has been adding the replacement files to articles. ----DanTD (talk) 15:41, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
- I have the files on my watch-list and have been meaning to work that list to help change their names within the articles as well, as renaming them is only half the story. Just that haven't yet been able to get the category down to zero because of some hard working editors, such as yourself, diligently taking on the Category:Incomplete file renaming requests ;) By the way, almost 20% of the long standing backlog has been renamed over just the last month and a half. Question... When you change the prior name with all uses, do you then request afterwords for a speedy delete, like R3 of the misnomer? Just curious as that is how I have been addressing them in the past. Calmer Waters 17:02, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
- To be honest, I never thought of that. Should I? ----DanTD (talk) 18:59, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
- I'm looking for the appropriate place to pose that question because one potential issue I can think of is off meta websites use. If a particular website links an image with the misnomer that has been deleted, so too will their image. At least, that might happen, through usage on Wikipedia should be fine if all links have been addressed. The question of whether to have a hoard of future misnomer redirects, or delete and address requests for the new file name of the deleted file should probably be discussed (if it hasn't already). Was just wondering your take on it. Calmer Waters 19:33, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
- To be honest, I never thought of that. Should I? ----DanTD (talk) 18:59, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Participation at my RfA
Thank you for taking the time to weigh in on my RfA. It was successful, in that the community's wish not to grant me the tools at this time was honored. I'm taking all the comments as constructive feedback and hope to become more valuable to the project as a result; I've also discovered several new areas in which to work. Because debating the merits of a candidate can be taxing on the heart and brain, I offer this kitten as a low-allergen, low-stress token of my appreciation. --otherlleft 13:32, 8 February 2010 (UTC) |

...helping me finish the re-categorization of the palmoplantar keratodermas section? Currently, I have categorized the articles and redirects through CDO syndrome. You can see any of those articles or redirects for examples, but basically those articles under the palmoplantar keratodermas section should be moved out of the Category:Papulosquamous hyperkeratotic skin diseases and into the Category:Palmoplantar keratodermas. In the process, I have also been using the WPMED template with the redirect class setting, as well at the {{R from alternative name}} template when appropriate. ---kilbad (talk) 18:49, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Uploading DYK images
I usually do under the same name (unless, e.g., I crop some art work and that cropping can offend some people :-) - no big deal, but this makes archiving the DYK sets much easier. The system warns me that the image with the same name was uploaded, etc, etc, but this may be ingored. Materialscientist (talk) 22:14, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- I just about to message you once you signed on :) I was looking at your recent image protections and was attempting to make out if the same file name could be used, as it is blank when the edit screen is opened. I then went off of File:Europe as a queen map upright.JPG and added the landscape to it. Does adding the {{c-uploaded}} automatically perform the page protection. Also, when the image is on commons, do we just add the information from the file and protect it or do we also need to upload the image? Good ol' learning curve and all :) Calmer Waters 22:28, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- One thing I forgot to tell is please do feel free to ask any question, even if it sounds silly - I had too many of those when I became an admin and my first DYK update was a mess :-) To images: every image on Commons has some "file" associated with it on en.wiki. This "file" can be protected, or some information can be added there, such as "this image is a featured image on ... wiki", etc, but the actual image and its description remain on Commons (I assume the images are not uploaded in both places). Thus to create a protected DYK entity, one has to upload the physical image on en.wiki. This image should be accompanied by a description (simply go to commons, edit, copy the entire image page and paste into the image description here). "C-uploaded" is merely a tag saying to other admins that the image is for DYK and can safely be deleted after its off the main page. Materialscientist (talk) 22:36, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- As to protection: everything uploaded to the queues is automatically "cascade protected", but. A software bug may delay the protection, thus I usually separately protect the uploaded file for 3-days, admin use only, both for editing and moving. Materialscientist (talk) 22:40, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- That is Very appreciated. So the image doesn't actually become protected until it reaches one of the six queues then? At that point the cascading template protection automatically would protect it? (you answered that part as I was typing :)) I was not fully aware that the file page does not really in essence exist, but rather a type of redirect to Commons. At least that's my current take on it. Calmer Waters 23:23, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- Protection is done by an admin clicking "protect" button at the top of a page. There, he can choose an option "cascade protection" meaning that every subpage or image on that page will be protected when it is copied there. So some admin has indefinitely cascade protected the individual Queues long ago. However, a bug (see Bugzilla:18483) may delay the action of cascade protection and I have had once a long discussion with a Commons admin on that (I was able to edit a file which he nominally protected before that, but that happens very rarely and normally the cascade protection acts "immediately"). The queue page itself is not protected because prep areas are not protected. In practice, I've not seen a single act of vandalism hitting the DYK area. Several people are watching the queues at any time, but I doubt many people watch images uploaded there (only visually). Thus you can imagine if someone substitutes an image being on the main page .. Sorry for babbling, an irrelevant topic, most WP pages are not move protected and the recent nasty vandals accumulate 10 edits and start moving WP pages to nasty locations, which takes time to revert (there is another type of recent vandalism which even an admin can't revert). This is to say that vandals mutate and adjust to counter measures .. Materialscientist (talk) 23:43, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- Looks like I have myself some research and studying to do. Reasoned that this was an opportune time to try out my first, as any mistakes would have time to be corrected (36+ hours), rather than several months ago when we were backlogged and queues were occasionally promoted to the main page shortly after being prepared. Come to think of it, I don't believe that has been a problem since a certain editor was given the ability to promote the prep areas :-) Calmer Waters 00:01, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, I've learned the whole DYK operation as a crash course when one night there was no single set for an update. (SoWhy and Chamal then explained me some details and mistakes) For many admin areas there is no clear manual. This is not to say one should not read, but I feel most admins learn by experience. Materialscientist (talk) 00:22, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

- Actually, you can make the cascading protection kick in by making a null edit to User:Ameliorate!/DYKlock. (Do this by clicking edit, and then clicking save, for that page, without changing anything...this won't show up in the page history.) Then you don't have to manually protect. It's true that we've been rarely hit with vandalism, but I remember a few months ago we had 2 or 3 main page images vandalized within a week. It happens. (Oh, and for future reference, the DYKlock page is the one that's cascade-protected. All the numbered queues are cascade-protected from there.) Shubinator (talk) 02:47, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- This comment is a good example of how I learn WP :-) Naive question, I start suspecting that the main page might shift the middle separator to compensate for unequal column left/right length, and thus that my recent fiddling with adding a DYK hook "to balance" the main page are quite futile for that. Off course before I add, it look unbalanced (on 1024x768, firefox), and naturally it depends on screen resolution, but playing with browsers and resolutions brought me to the above question. 02:57, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- The column widths look like they're hardcoded into the Main Page as 55%-45%, so they shouldn't change. Huh, I just noticed today that TFA/DYK is wider than ITN/OTD. Shubinator (talk) 03:05, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Which is the reason for my question - I thought someone is adjusting that hard code at times; I felt that the column length varies within minutes, but this could be due to change in content too. Materialscientist (talk) 03:15, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- The Main Page hasn't been edited since early January, so the hardcode has stayed the same. You're probably just seeing change of content. Shubinator (talk) 03:17, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Must say I wish I knew the ins and outs of computer coding as you do Shubinator, but the above is interesting and quite helpful. Never had known of User:Ameliorate!/DYKlock before now. Sowhy turned me onto Firefox and after some getting used to, seems to work much better as far as page upload times. :) Calmer Waters 15:41, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

DYK for Phil Harris (fisherman)
Barnstar
The Special Barnstar | ||
This may seem like an odd thing to award a barnstar for, but your suggestion to me a couple of weeks ago to give Firefox3 a try has so totally changed my internet experience, and increased my Wiki-productivity to such an extent, that a barnstar doesn't seem at all excessive. It really is like having a new computer on my desk. To think that I've been bogged down all this time with the dreadfully slow and increasingly unreliable IE, when the solution was just a mouse click away! I shudder to think that if you hadn't happened to mention it, I would still be tearing my hair out waiting for pages to load the way I was not long ago. So - thanks once again :) Gatoclass (talk) 13:50, 22 February 2010 (UTC) |
- Thank you Gatoclass :) The uploading speed along with the convenient tabs on the top, I don't see myself going back to IE anytime soon. I remembering it taking almost 2 hours a prep queue because in part of waiting to pull up that dreaded 300K+ monster over and over again. Just wish it didn't do that fishing for which edit tab opens the correct nomination at times; however, with all the pluses, I can easily overlook this minor occasional odd thing. Thanks again and glad it helps :) Kindly Calmer Waters 18:53, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
Could I get your feedback
Perhaps I could get your thoughts on my first feature picture nomination at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Pyogenic granuloma 1.jpg? Please know that I am not asking necessarily for your support, just your thoughts on the image and possible feature status. ---kilbad (talk) 00:38, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
- hmmm. Haven't had too much success with the whole POTD nomination process. Much too do with things like "noise", perspectives, and other values and photographic criteria that I'm slowly looking into. I have been pointed in the past that going to pictured peer review and possibility valued picture candidates can help with gaining an understanding and addressing any potential issues before nominating at FPC. - looks like much of the vandalism has slowed down and the main editors responsible for the vandalism have been blocked. I'll keep an eye on the article, as there does not currently appear to be an excessive amount of vandalism taking place to justify protecting the page. If it starts up again, we'll move to protecting the page. Thanks Calmer Waters 00:16, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

A special well done goes to Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Hunter Kahn (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.
Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! Hey Clamer Waters. Do you want me to work on Prep area 2 now? It's empty but I don't know if you have something planed for it or if now's not the time to work on it. Thanks.--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 01:22, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Sure if you would like. Just place a {{inuse}} at the top of whichever queue you plan of compiling so others will know that the Prep areas are being worked, to prevent edit conflicts, and then just remove it when done working on them. If you have any questions that come up, please feel free to ask. Kindly Calmer Waters 01:30, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- I'm on my way. I may have a few questions about balanceing it and giveing credit but I'll give it a try :)--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 01:34, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

- It took half an hour. But was it being "quick" a bad thing? DId I mess up or is there an improper balance?--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 02:19, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- IDK. Material Scientist can seem to prepare 4 queues in the time it takes me to do one or two (not that its a race :)) Maybe I'm just slow. Looking at your queue it looks pretty good. May need to break a couple of the hook into Preparation 1. The last hook should be either quirky or funny. We also want to leave other quirky hooks for other updates. There appears to be two within this queue (Serra Pelada and College of Physicians of Philadelphia), but this is very open to opinion and what hooks are laying about at the time. All in all nice work Also and most important really. We want to try to pull from the Older nominations first, digging into the newer nominations as needed to balance the queue. Otherwise the list of date will forever grow and some hooks would theoretically never be used. Calmer Waters 02:28, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Gotcha. I would also help out at the queues but I'm not an admin. As for my edits to P2, I know what I did wrong, I should have balanced them a bit more and added a few older ones and make the last one a bit funy but Can we leave this one as it is? I don;t want to have to go back and revet all of those edits and start from square one.--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 02:32, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

- Done! Take a look at P2 if you want :) Hope I did'nt screw anything up.--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 02:07, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Best way to learn is to try IMO :) Calmer Waters 01:38, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

You don't need to go back. We can just switch a couple around is all. Yeah. Working the older nominations up can take a bit of time at times. Sometimes there is little that are verified at the time, or maybe to many American hooks or not enough, or too many bio hooks, so you need to verified-move a couple to balance the queue. This can take a while at times. Calmer Waters 02:40, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. And as they say, paractice makes perfect, and this was my first time ever doing that. Thanks for the advice and the help CW :)--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 02:42, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Prep1
Just a thought: to spare Michele S. Jones as a lead for 8 March (we don't really have good ones in the 8 March section). Materialscientist (talk) 06:50, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- That's a great idea. Did not even think of that, was just convenient having a good lead article that balanced the US hooks of that queue. I'm more than OK with moving it back and placing it in the March 8th holding area. Calmer Waters 06:54, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Done. Sorry for making you look for a replacement :). Materialscientist (talk) 07:05, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Just wish I knew how you are so efficient at setting up the queues. Feels like I've been sitting on that page forever. Calmer Waters 07:08, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Done. Sorry for making you look for a replacement :). Materialscientist (talk) 07:05, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
Another thought (thinking aloud sorry for bugging): Messier 58 has a nice picture, but not much more (1600b stub), Messier 100 seems better, and GRB 090423 is bulkier, though with a worse picture. Materialscientist (talk) 07:34, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- I know. I'm currently at a loss of what to place. There just doesn't appear to be alot of good images available on the lower end of the list and on occasion, submit to a very nice image instead of bulk when this happens. I'm free to changing the lead hook to whatever might work best. Calmer Waters 07:40, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Its Ok (and is easy to sit back and give advice :). Yes, the bottom part is poor. These days I was either converting non-leads to leads (finding an image - some 5x nominators don't bother even if the image is in the article) or picking from the middle - backlog anyway, and we run sometimes 10-hook sets, i.e. larger ratio of non-lead/lead. Adoption offer
Thanks for offering adoption to me :), I would like to know how it works?--Dyaa (talk) 15:45, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
- Your welcome. There are two ways that this can be done. Either by informal mentorship in which I can help assist you with any questions that may come up from time to time through your editing experiences; and something more formal where I would present tasks for you to do that would direct your editing to different parts of the encyclopedia and meta aspects involved in the different functions that take place on this site. Its really upto you. I kind of bounced around the site in the beginning until I found something that really interested me; Did you know.... Every editor finds different things enjoyible here, whether it is editing, creating, or copyeditting articles, working with images, patrolling new pages, joining committees or tasks forces, or any number of areas of this vast site. Calmer Waters 22:09, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

- Coldplay Expert, none of that is a barrier to adoption - in fact, with your experience it should make it easier to know what kind of adopter you want! I wasn't really sure what to do with the editor who adopted me, so the relationship just kind of sat there because I wasn't sure what I wanted help with. I think maybe adoption should be reserved for brand-new editors and a (slightly) more formal mentorship process could help out more experienced editors with a better idea of how they want to work here. Have to update WP:MENTOR if we ever do that, of course.--~TPW 04:13, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Crippling your sets
I owe you a note on that I often demote your hooks and change your sets. 'Your' because you're the only one who does that. 'Change' because I'm a nasty skeptic. Speaking for myself, I do make dozens of DYK errors/week, around Main Page, some really stupid, and say for myself - it its hard to notice everything :). It is much easier to see that from a distance. Please never hesitate to tell where I was wrong or where you disagree with me (for example, I often replace leads because of my sense of "strong article", which might be entirely wrong). Materialscientist (talk) 05:28, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- Your so humble :) Its OK. I just hope to take some of the promotion slack from you (and subsequent scrutiny). About the hook in question, I'm looking for sources as we speak. Spent 40 minutes validating different portions of the last AGF+ tick I did for Black River (settlement) to make sure I could confidently stand behind my AGF+ decision. And through I could verify many points from a Google scholar search (including the hook), the text within the article still eludes me from behind an academic paywall or another. Hopefully with I can get permissions from the University to gain access to these databases to help with further validation of offline sources that can be sometimes be verified on these journals and hopefully help with the reducing the likelihood of another fiasco, or at the least make it that much more difficult. Also, always feel free to step in if you have any concerns with any of my promotions. Better to be safe and wait than be sorry. Kindly Calmer Waters 05:49, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- Question..Sense File:Chapel of the Cross 03 cropped.jpg is still in the lead hook should the file stand, unless you were looking to replace the lead in Prep 2? Calmer Waters 05:56, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- As you could anticipate from this thread :) I am in the process of crippling prep2: IMO, the lead is somewhat weak - the article and the "featured in two books" part, but French battleship Courbet is a good lead, which I'll put forward - Sturmvogel's ships get high views, and manned torpedo part is magnetizing (tried to find a free torpedo image for some time but failed). Also, there are two biological hooks which I thought to share between preps 1 and 2. Doing ... Materialscientist (talk) 06:04, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- Oh, about to cripple. ;-) I'll see if I can come up with an image also. Calmer Waters 06:20, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- I've saved prep2 for now (usually keep until finished) - there is a pic, and there are pics on human torpedos, the problem was to find free image of specific type, Neger manned torpedo (Italian, Japanese and German manned torpedos were very different). There are nice 1:35 model pictures on the web, could be free, but not free .. and I stopped there - my usual strategy if I can't find an image within 15 min of intensive search I move on to another task. Materialscientist (talk) 06:25, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed. It appears that NAC [8] images are under the open source initiative which I believe to be under the CC 2.5 share-alike attribution. Something I will research in the future as they have a database of over 14 million images. May be mistaken as I have only started looking into it just now. Will probably bring up to someone with more international image copyright knowledge at a later time Calmer Waters 07:16, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

How to add images onto Wikipedia
Can you tell me how to add pictures onto Wikipedia?Bread Ninja (talk) 16:57, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
- Did you want to upload an image onto Wikipedia or place an image that is already on Wikipedia or Commons onto an article? If your looking to upload an image, there is a link on the left hand of the screen, under toolbox, that states Upload file. It will then give you a number of choices to choose from.
- To place an image onto an article you would use:
- [[File:Example.jpg|thumb|120px|caption]]
- Changing out Example for the image's name. There are a few different ways to do it, and Wikipedia:Images give some further information on formatting issues. Calmer Waters 17:18, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Abu Nidal
Hi CW, your move of the Abu Nidal image now makes it look as though its unused (no pages link to it), and as it's fair use it has to note a use on the image page or it risks being deleted. SlimVirgin TALK contribs 11:50, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- Uggh. EarwigBot is on a mission of going through and changing over 2000 images (so far) to the correct Internet media type. Still need to go through and clean up the redirects and update the articles with the new image extention. Going to be a long process. I'll start doing as I go along after cleaning up the previous. I would hope someone would not delete the images as they are attached through the redirects to the articles. Thank you for bring this up to my attention. Now if I only had a script to do this :) Calmer Waters 12:01, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know whether to move it back or upload it again. It's the lead image in a featured article, so I need to make sure it doesn't suddenly get blanked, tagged, or deleted, and given that the image page now says it's unused fair use, that's likely. Anyway, sorry to add to your woes. :) SlimVirgin TALK contribs 15:32, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Image revert request
I'd like to see the now deleted version of File:Jenkem1.jpg undeleted. Since this is a facsimile it makes no sense to have the image replaced by a downscaled version which is basically unreadable. The nature of the image also strongly suggests that presenting a very low-grade version of the image is not important. __meco (talk) 08:06, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
- I could do it, however; if the text depicted in the image is that valuable, does it not go against Wikipedia's unacceptable use of Fair-use images of using "An image of a newspaper article or other publication that contains long legible sections of copyrighted text. If the text is important as a source or quotation, it should be worked into the article in text form with the article cited as a source"? As the image you would like is 720×931, where fair-use images should be around 300–400px. to abide the minimal extent of use. Calmer Waters 08:27, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
- I'll have to ponder this. __meco (talk) 10:50, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

- Just delete the page which is has the "final" title, then move the other page there, then click "undelete", and select all, then restore :). - Kingpin13 (talk) 19:12, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
Frankenstrat Edits
I was not vandalizing the Frankenstrat article. It is a fact that is shown in Eddie Van Halen On Recreating Frankenstein Part 2- eddie_van_halen_on_recreating_frankenstein. (Dli42395 (talk) 20:23, 27 March 2010 (UTC))
- I will go ahead and remove the warning from your talk page. Would it be possible for you to add a source for the statement. Kindly Calmer Waters 20:27, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
TRL
I'm confused as to why my edits were considered vandalism and reverted.
ScrappyFan (talk) 06:14, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
- It was reverted because the text 1-800-DIAL-MTV begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 1-800-DIAL-MTV end_of_the_skype_highlighting doesn't seem to serve any purpose, and appears to be disruptive editing. If this is indeed the case, I don't know. from the underscores it looks to be a copy and paste from another source. Was it an accident posting it in such a manner (accidents do happen, I do plenty :))? If it was I don't understand why it was repeatedly put back in like that. That would be why you received the notices and the edits were reverted. Kindly Calmer Waters 06:31, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
- I'm dealing with Scrappy as well, trying to explain things to him. Thanks for the help, it's appreciated. Regards, --Manway (talk) 06:36, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
- Read that after I placed the template. Looks like your on top of it, Thanks Manway. Kindly Calmer Waters 06:40, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Warning removal/DYK
Hi, I removed your warning, I tagged the article as WP:G7 instead. Thanks for your HG work. CTJF83 chat 06:43, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
- Nothing like warning an editor for blanking their own single editor article. Thanks for doing that. Calmer Waters 06:48, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
- Sure thing, CTJF83 chat 08:27, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
No sense in a new section...I've linked my DYK to a reference from Iowa Public Television that doesn't say possibly. CTJF83 chat 17:33, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
- Sure. I'll head over and take a look at it. Thanks for the heads-up Calmer Waters 17:54, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
dupe
Thanks for removing my duplicate post. I have no idea how that happened! Luminifer (talk) 05:40, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
- No problems. Just wanted to be clear that I was only removing the duplicate. Thanks again Calmer Waters 05:45, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Calmer Waters
Hi, I created the Marlborough Town F.C. page and having had cretins on here annoy me about it I want to have it deleted.
Thank You. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Adam Alden (talk • contribs) 05:16, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks - can you also delete the page Alexander Shaw that I also created, it should be linked from the Marlborough Town F.C. page.
Adam Alden (talk) 05:19, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- Alexander 'Jock' Shaw done per request. Marlborough Town F.C. appears to have an edit from an IP made on it, that at first glance seems to disqualify an author requested speedy deletion CSD G7. Would a Proposed deletion be acceptable, or do you feel it falls under one of the other WP:speedy deletion criteria? Calmer Waters 05:28, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
IP Example
Using an example from a recent AIV report: 66.37.129.103 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log)
- WHOIS says it belongs to "Ave Maria Church", but
- RDNS gives us "host103.regisjesuit.com"
Plugging http://regisjesuit.com into Firefox tells me it is "Regis Jesuit High School" in Aurora, Colorado. —DoRD (talk) 18:23, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- looked up a few that that already had templates, most by you :). Can see what you mean with some that are easier than others. You know before today, I had no idea what the WHOIS and RDNS were for. Never really gave them much thought. So much I still have to learn..... Calmer Waters 18:31, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- I had a lot of IP/DNS experience before Jimbo even launched this project. Anyway, one other item and I'll leave you be: The RBLs link can come in handy when an IP is reported for spamming. Cheers —DoRD (talk) 18:38, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- Hmmm. Not really sure what everything on that page means, but that doesn't mean I can't find out ;) Thanks again for taking the time and for the assistance. It is appreciated. Kindly Calmer Waters 19:08, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

DYK second opinion
Hello Calmer Waters, would it be possible to have a second opinion on this DYK nom (Maimonides Synagogue). I am still a novice at this, and I am not sure of my decision to verify it or not is accurate. Thank you. Yazan (talk) 16:17, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- Missed this one. Sorry Yazan. Will do if not done already. Calmer Waters 03:50, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
- No worries, thanks anyway. It did spiral into an AE and topic bans were given, but the dust has settled now. Thanks. Yazan (talk) 04:33, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
- I saw that. Still looking threw everything. It amazes me how much can take place in such a short amount of time (haven't been at DYK as much the last month or so) Usually its such a sensible place. On occasion when a discussion heats up, it is usually worked out without too much drama. I think the last few times involved some Polish articles and the occasional differences about the interpretations of the DYK rules. These two recent instances are quite unfortunate. I have seen your name on my watch-list updating the preparation queues and helping and the talk page. Hope you find it enjoyable over there even with the occasional fiesty contributor, as a suppose we all can be at times :). Calmer Waters 05:23, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, it is an unfortunate upset to the usually peaceful atmosphere at DYK. I do enjoy it very much, it's actually becoming one of my favorite areas on Wikipedia. It gives you a chance to glance over a diverse range of easily explained topics with a certain standard of quality that you don't get otherwise. Happy Editing and thanks again. WikiCup 2010 March newsletter
We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page. If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Articles for deletion nomination of The Underwood
I have nominated The Underwood, an article that you created, for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.
Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. RL0919 (talk) 23:00, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
