Excessive/Odd Unparty content in Freedom Party of Ontario entry edit

CJCurrie: I'm not a regular contributor, and I've never tried to provide feedback to an editor before, so I apologize if posting here is the wrong way to go about it. I'm writing because the Freedom Party of Ontario entry appears to need some work. It looks like, over the last 19 months or so, there has been a lot of editing of the page. Particularly weird is the excessive amount of content about Unparty. As leader of Freedom Party of Ontario, and as a person having spent a great deal of time in the party archives, I can tell you that although party president Robert Metz for a time ran a growing Unparty constituency association in the early eighties, he has never been a "market anarchist", though it is probably accurate that the Toronto-based founders of Unparty were market anarchists. Freedom Party of Ontario was not simply a re-named Unparty. As the FPO entry on wikipedia already notes, Freedom Party had a different orientation, largely because Robert Metz was (and is) an Objectivist, as am I. Accordingly, Freedom Party has at all times been anti-anarchism. Indeed, anarchists were effectively shown the door with Freedom Party's launch, as Freedom Party's platform, immediately, was summarized by the statement: "Freedom Party believes that the purpose of government is to defend individual freedom of choice, not to restrict it". Unparty, like Ontario's libertarian party from which it sprang, welcomed anarchists and anarchism, and so avoided stating that government had any purpose at all. All of which is to say: although there's clearly nothing wrong with noting that Freedom Party was formed by two Unparty members (Robert Metz and Marc Emery) when that party was, essentially, abandoned by its founders, and it is legally the case that the registration of Freedom Party of Ontario was carried out by assuming the Unparty registration and changing the name, I think all of the details about Unparty are a bit excessive, especially because almost none of the Unparty people mentioned in the Freedom Party of Ontario entry on wikipedia became Freedom Party people (as noted in the currently worded wikipedia entry, the reason is: the Unparty people mentioned there would have no interest in a pro-government party like FPO, they being "market anarchists"). Perhaps a separate entry is needed for Unparty? Other observations: the pornography debate in London actually occurred primarily prior to the founding of Freedom Party of Ontario (mostly in 1982 and 1983). The debate was spearheaded by a London feminist group called London Status of Women Advocacy Group (LSWAG) and, particularly, by UWO professor Gail Hutchinson. You can now verify the dates etc., because Freedom Party has just made available online the complete four-issue tabloid published in 1983 by Marc Emery, The London Metrobulletin: http://www.freedomparty.on.ca/archive/category/london-metrobulletin/ . Emery and Metz, prior to the founding of Freedom Party, ended up responding to the various efforts of London feminists to have erotic magazines (including Playboy) removed from variety stores or (as ended up being the case) covered up or hidden behind a curtain. However, by the time Freedom Party was founded, London's pornography fixation had largely abated. By 1984 (note: Freedom Party did not exist as such until 1984...the wikipedia entry currently says 1983, which is incorrect), Freedom Party of Ontario's focus was primarily upon: educating businesses and advising them against the foundation of "Business Improvement Areas" (BIAs...that campaign continued for more than half a decade); opposing closed shop unions (Freedom Party ran a nationally reported free garbage collection campaign in London during the city's strike of garbage collection workers); Opposing (successfully) London's bid for the 1991 Pan Am Games (see the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=CdBmCaGLBXM ); and opposing Sunday retail closing laws. All of the above (with the exception of the BIA campaign) is pretty much detailed in part 1 of my documentary, "The Principle of Pot" ( http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF9E287D95F11495A&feature=plcp ). Also, I don't believe there was much if any mention of marijuana by Freedom Party (there certainly was no campaign or focus) in the 1980s. The anti-prohibition campaigns in London were chiefly carried out by Marc Emery after he - in November 1990 - left politics and decided to effect social change by focussing on a single issue. That too can be seen in my documentary. You can verify all of the above, also, by looking through the party's newsletter, Freedom Flyer - http://www.freedomparty.on.ca/publications/publications.htm (which, contrary to the wikipedia entry, was not published "occasionally", but was rather regularly published). I leave any edits to you, of course. I write only because the quality of the information on the wikipedia entry for Freedom Party of Ontario today struck me as somewhat degraded as compared to the last time I reviewed it (perhaps 18 or 24 months ago). Hope some of that helps. - Paul — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paul McKeever (talkcontribs) 12:59, 20 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi. When you recently edited André Vallerand, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Anglophone (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Template:Canadian election result edit

Hi, CJCurrie. I noticed that you do most of the edits on tables based on the CanElec templates, so I'd like to get your opinion on Template:Canadian election result. It's a template I made that can duplicate the effects of the CanElect template in one page using parser functions. Do you mind if I start using this template instead of yours? Do you have any recomended changes for the template? You can see it in use at Template:Canadian federal by-election, May 13, 2002/Electoral District/Calgary Southwest and Template:Canadian federal election, 1979/Electoral District/Broadview—Greenwood. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 06:43, 31 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

MSU Interview edit

Dear CJ,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 02:37, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation link notification for December 1 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Jacques Charbonneau, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages World Trade Centre and Pierre Bourque (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
