Proposed deletion of Scott Jaworski edit

The article Scott Jaworski has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Notability. No sources than directory listings like imdb.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Kevin O'Leary edit

I see that you have done work on various Canadian elections. I presume that you have access to further information. In particular would you be able to determine whether Kevin O'Leary, of Lang and O'Leary and Dragons' Den fame, was a candidate for the Toronto School Board in 1974 or 1976? There was a Kevin O'Leary at Toronto's Rochdale College in 1973 and 1974. He was a very controversial figure there. There is reference to him at http://thumbnailsketchesofrochdalians.blogspot.ca/ where he is painted in a way consistent with his current public persona, but the author of those sketches also has a way of describing people in a way that borders on libellous. I would not consider that author reliable in many things that he says. What I would like to do is find confirmation that the two Kevin O'Learys are the same person. It's a plausible hypothesis. The 1973-4 time frame coincides with the time after the celebrity left the Royal Military College, and before he went to Waterloo. Any light you can shine on this mystery will be appreciated. TemplateData is here edit

Hey CJCurrie

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Longley edit

Just noting re this that that was probably put in by Longley himself. I knew the guy fairly well back at SFU. He was not a hole-dweller (the meaning of "hobbit" according to Tolkien) but he did live in a nicely-furnished and rather comfortable giant stump in the woods east of campus. Three floors, with kitchen and stove on the bottom floor, bedroom upstairs, and a covered "deck" on top. Calling himself a hobbit is definitely something I can see Blair doing. Of course, he's a COI/AUTO source and doesn't cite himself anyway, but....Skookum1 (talk) 20:16, 5 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Question edit

It seems fairly likely to me that the Shannon Martin who won the Morris by-election in Manitoba last week is probably the same one who previously ran for the same party in Kildonan in 1999 — however, I can't find a source which properly confirms that, and per WP:V we can't just assume that until we know for sure. You've got much better access to news databases than I do, so I wanted to ask if you could take a few minutes to dig back and see if you can find anything that would help solve the riddle. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 22:17, 8 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

No worries, I could already tell you hadn't been on for a couple of weeks when I asked, I just wasn't sure who else to approach since few other people have anything like the database access that you seem to have. Thanks for that, at any rate — it indeed looks like enough since it directly links him to both Kildonan and the CFIB. Bearcat (talk) 21:07, 19 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Eric Mann. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Eric Mann (civil rights organizer). Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Eric Mann (civil rights organizer) – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity edit

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Proposed deletion of Global Association of Risk Professionals edit

The article Global Association of Risk Professionals has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Promotional and Totally unsourced. Two previous deletions.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

Extended confirmed protection edit

Hello, CJCurrie. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins edit

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers edit

Hi CJCurrie.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Chris Moise edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Chris Moise, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Ed Janiszewski edit

What the article would have needed to do, but wasn't doing as written, is actually show his notability. It didn't say anything whatsoever about Montreal city council, but literally amounted to "former mayor of DDO, the end" — and if somebody knew that he had more notability than the article was actually demonstrating, they needed to speak up. But at any rate, an AFD discussion doesn't actually constitute a permanent ban on the subject ever being allowed to have an article at all. DRV doesn't have to weigh in first before you're allowed to try again — if it's possible to write and source something more substantial and more notable than what was there at the time, then you're free to do that anytime you want without needing DRV to overturn the original result first. But the original article was a two-line stub that just said "smalltown mayor" and literally contained nothing worth building on, so there's no need to take it to DRV — if you can do better than the first creator did, you're allowed to just go right ahead and do it. Bearcat (talk) 03:30, 17 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

As a general rule, I consider DRV to be necessary only if there are open questions about whether the original close was proper on procedural grounds, such as assessing whether the closer correctly assessed the consensus or not. A lot of people seem to think it's always necessary to overturn an AFD at DRV before any new attempt at an article can ever be undertaken at all — but it's really not. In the case of Bernie Wolfe, what really killed that article more than anything else was the almost total lack of any genuinely substantive sources in it besides an obituary — while consensus has certainly ended up deprecating Winnipeg as a city whose municipal councillors would get an automatic notability pass just for existing, they can still be kept if something genuinely substantive and well-sourced can be written. Note, for example, that in the batches of Winnipeg city councillors that I or Kcoffman listed for AFD last year, one article that didn't get put up for deletion was Russ Wyatt — because unlike most of the others, he's actually got a longer and more substantial article, which cites more distinct footnotes, than even most federal MPs have. So even for Bernie Wolfe, I'd say the same as for Janiszewski: if you're convinced you can write a substantial and well-sourced article that makes his notability more apparent than it was the first time, then just go right ahead. Marie Plourde edit

Yes, as you noticed from the deletion discussion, the old version was a single-sourced piece of advertorial crap, which didn't even address any potential notability for any other reason than "used to be a MusiquePlus VJ and a cancer awareness model, the end." Your version is vastly better. The thing to remember is that AFD, at its core, does not represent a permanent ban on the subject ever being considered notable enough to have an article, but merely a judgement on whether the existing version is adequate or not. We have had lots of instances where a bad or premature version of an article got deleted, but then either something new happened to change the notability equation or somebody put in the time to do a better job of making existing notability more apparent and better-sourced.
People's notability and sourceability can change in the interim (e.g. sometimes non-winning candidates for office who posted premature campaign brochures actually do win the election in the end, sometimes musicians who posted their EPK here when they were still just wannabes who had yet to release their first album actually do go on to become genuinely notable musicians once the album's actually come out, and on and so forth), and different people have access to different potential sources (e.g. it's entirely possible that you can adequately source something I couldn't and vice versa, because we have access to different sets of resources). Some people erroneously rush to tag an article for speedy if there's ever been a prior AFD on the topic at all, but they're wrong — that only applies to a recreated article that makes the same poor notability claim and cites the same or similarly poor sources for it, and an article isn't speediable as a recreation of deleted content if the new notability claim and/or the new sourcing are better than the first version showed. There have even been a few instances where I was the creator of the new article about a person I had been the nominator of the first time. Bearcat (talk) 16:37, 28 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular) edit

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:National Radical Party (Serbia) politicians edit

A tag has been placed on Category:National Radical Party (Serbia) politicians requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay.
