Leonardo's fingerprint is confirmed embedded in the paint....regarding the Titians, they were bought at Sothebys as Titian (June 1989)/(1931), I guess you don't buy at auction either or you would have known this....finally, the Raphael was sold at Christies in 1892 as "Raphael" and is featured in Burlington Magazine Oct. 1978....perhaps you should go find someone else to harrass.

Academy Saint Luke

Thank you for your kind words. You also are of course a lover of the great Michelangelo - and you know far more than I about art. (I'm merely clever at taking books and making a summary of them). Robb, in my opinion, is a journalist rather than a scholar - which is exactly what I see myself as being. He did a great deal of work before writing his biography, but in the writing he allowed (deliberately) himself to take a highly personalised view of his subject. It's great writing, but not really scholarship.

As for the article on the academy, it suffers from being too narrow - this is because it's based on to few sources. How important was it in subsequent art history? I have no idea. But this needs to be written proiperly - a job which you will be more able than I to do, as I don't read Italian. I will watch what happens with interest.

By the way, do you know the expatraite Australian artist Jeffrey Smart? He paints desolate, austere scenes, with something of Caravaggio's spirit - but without Caravaggio's hope of salvation. That's the true modernism of Caravaggio, his discovery of the isolation of modern man, in a world in which religion is a hope rather than a certainty. PiCo 13:46, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

I have removed all our arguments from this page as they serve no useful purpose. I am sure you would agree.

My request is that if we are to produce a meaningful page on Cannobio that it be done constructively.

I admire your contribution of the history of Cannobio and have taken the liberty of correcting some of the english, whilst leaving, in totality, your contribution intact.

I have reinserted SOME of my original contributiuon, leaving out your perfectly reasonable accusation of some of it being a little like Yellow Pages. I have no axe whatsoever to grind that these be left out, though would argue that as Cannobio IS primarily a tourist destination, at least a LIST of commercial entities - particularly restaurant...a source close to the heart of any Italian - be included, if no personal observations on their merit or lack of it.

I am relatively new to Wikipedia and therefore ask that if there is anything you, or anyone, objects to in the content of my contribution, they do me the courtesy of telling me - and this CAN be done politely - instead of arbitarily deleting everything. I am perfectly willing to learn.

THAT, to my view, is the spirit of Wikipedia - Even Wikipedia describes Encyclopedic as

Re: Peitre dure

The article Pietre dure needs some major revision. Mosaic is an ancient art, but lapidary art is a different art; it's jewelers doing stone, semiprecious stone and even precious stone, all finely polished and tightly fitted, unlike a bathroom floor or wall. Peitre dure is the jeweler's art applied to mosaic, with the grout sometimes made invisible.

I have redone pietre dure, and would not mind a critique. The references/sources need to be tidied up somewhat, but that's for another day; the article also needs to be moved to the correct name-space.

Not being the author, I can--and did --remove the tag. The prejudice against the fine arts here seems to be increasing-- - You've been here much longer than I have, but I do not know whether you follow the AfD debates--I do, mainly to rescue persecuted academics-- , and the only way to deal with it is to build up the article in advance offline and never put in a stub. To prevent speedys, the trick at the moment is to include the exact phrase "He is notable for ..." using that exact word. Sounds nutty, but it works. The Grove ref there did not work at least from the US. I put in an additional one to the subscription version. I am trying to get it established that any artist (or musician) with a Grove article is Notable as a matter of course, and if you wish I will help--and ask for help--as needed. Concrete suggestions for Pederasty?

You criticized pederasty on its talk page a while back, but made no edits to the article. I've placed a POV tag on the page -- what are the changes you think should be made? DanB†DanD 18:20, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

My comments elaborate in the discussion problems with the scholarship of the article, specifically that where there is a dearth of data, sodomy is confused with pederasty, and on the whole the article seems to suggest that pederasty is common. On the other hand, I do not want to re-write this article; I do not want to make it my focus. It is a contentious business of which I want no part of. My interest is the culture of the Italian peninsula mainly from 1600-1800. My intersection with pederasty was that one of the authors of the pederasty article was making octupus-like links to items of little relationship, and also using those articles to foward his view that "pederasty was commonplace" specially among the "luminaries of the time". He also made specific statements that were false, he made Michelangelo into a pederast, and the evidence of this is sketchy. The article of pederasty is a problems, for which I do not want to be the solution. I would warn the editors that some of the behavior exhibited by Haiduc and others could be seen as legally troublesome, if it means to link Michelangelo, a common topic for middle school children, to pederasty, and from there to man-boy organizations like NAMBLA. I am comfortable patrolling Italian art, I do not want to be responsible for what occurs in "pederasty". CARAVAGGISTI 03:41, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

However, just some advices: please avoid the use of statements such as "notable church", "famous painter" etc.. those are called "weasel words", and belong to the POV policy which is disregarded here. I admit, sometimes I use it also, but try to avoid it especially in the definition of the entry. Also, another very minor thing: use complete numbering when possible: i.e. 1594-1597, instead of 1594-7. Ciao! Some notes of style about your article Galleria dei dipinti antichi della Cassa di Risparmio di Cesena:

• No need of boldface when it's a simple list. It's reserved to (sub)sections or repetition, in different form, of the name of the entry's subject
• No need of listing by surname. say, not Beccafumi, Domenico, but leave it Domenico Beccafumi though maintaining the listing by surname of course.
• No use of 1400s instead of 15th century. Here, "1400s" means literally the years from 1401 to 1410.

Getty

Thanks - I use the Getty Union List as a convenient online reference for artists names, or in todays case, the sorting of names; in most cases I could use books but the Getty is easier for others to check. I don't think a copyright issue arises there. As you may know, until recently the WP manual of style implied that eg Jan van Eyck was sorted under V as "Van Eyck, Jan" which is just not right. This has been changed & I was sorting out the "defaultsort"s etc. User:Pietdesomere seems to have gone quiet - he used to do a lot. Attilios has developed an interest in van Eyck. I'm not sure I want to spend too much time on these guys - there are so many of them! All the best. Johnbod 00:47, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Girolamo da Trevigi

Hi. I am quite certain that Girolamo da Trevigi and Girolamo da Treviso (the Younger) are one in the same, and that he is also known as Gerolamo Pennacchi. Vasari discusses him in the biography of Perino del Vaga. The relationship between Girolamo and Pier Maria Pennacchi is more complex. I don't have any proof of Girolamo having studied with Pier, but I won't discount it for now. However, Domenico Capriolo (no article, but red-linked in the Giorgione article) appears to have been both Pier Maria's student and son-in-law. It also seems that older literature often discussed Pier Maria Pennacchi together with another Girolamo da Treviso (the Elder) who lived between 1475–97, who might also have been his older brother. That's where an investigation of my books took me just now. So yes, it's a bit too confusing for me to get a complete picture at the moment. But I'll add anything solid I find (but not at this moment as I don't have time)... --Stomme 07:02, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Butting in, according to the Getty Name list Pier Maria was the younger brother (by 14 years) of Girolamo da Treviso the Elder.[3] What they don't specify is the relationship between these two and Girolamo the Younger, who was born perhaps just after the Elder's death. A justification of the category "Italian Roman Catholics"

You wrote to me: "I want to question the utility of even having this category. Specifically I object to making such a category and including Italians from Rome from the 16th and 17th century. Is there a category of Italians from Rome in those centuries who were not Roman Catholics?? Someone listed both Gianlorenzo Bernini and Michelangelo in this category, why? What else could Michelangelo have been? I think this category is exceedingly redundant when applied to Italians of those centuries. I question if it has any informative value. Nearly all Italians living in Rome in the 16th century were Catholic. It would be more interesting to make a list of those who weren't. I challenge you to find any. 1. Utility does not determine whether or not the designation of a person under a category is appropriate. There is especially no reason to proscribe the assignment of what may seem to be obvious, implied, or redundant categories to those individuals whose historical or cultural situatedness make their assignment to those categories obvious, implied, or redundant.

2. You challenged me to present exceptions to your absolutist conjecture that "all Italians living in Rome in the 16th century were Catholic." Exhibit A: Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), who was condemned as a heretic by Catholic authority. Since convicted heresy implies excommunication, Bruno was ipso facto a non-Catholic.

3. I am reassigning the category "Italian Roman Catholics" to all those persons who are or were in fact Italian Roman Catholics. I have proven with the example of Bruno that a "16th century Italian, Roman Catholic person" is not tautologous. Hence, the categorization of certain 16th century Italians as "Italian Roman Catholics" has at least some informative value.

Please do NOT copy and paste content to rename pages--use the Move tab

The Pietro Bianchi article page should have been Moved to Pietro Bianchi (Athlete)--not transfered via cut&paste. Using cut&paste separates the content from its edit history, which is a problem with the GFDL license, among other things, which admins then have to clean up. If you have done the same thing with other articles in the past you can report them at the Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Also, please note that according to Wikipedia:naming conventions the new articles should be at Pietro Bianchi (athlete) (which should be taken care of by the admin merging the histories) and Pietro Bianchi (painter), without the excess capitalization. Format

Ciao CARAV. Some little format advices: 1) don't put in boldface or italics the titles in the |title= field of the cite book template; 2) don't forget the birth/death cat where possible; 3) check typos in your articles. For the rest, compliments for the wide interesting opera you're doing with Italian painters!!! I've recently added a more thouroughly analysis of interpretations of The Flagellation (Piero della Francesca), which still nobody has copyedit or checked. It you've time, you can help with it. Barbiere

I only see Damiano del Barbiere referred to as Domenico del Barbiere: even the source at the bottom of the page spells him that way. Did you have a source that calls him "Damiano"? Of course, people were often called more than one name in those days.qp10qp 16:46, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

My books spell him with an e, but your use of an i prompted me to change my search terms, and so I have found Domenico del Barbieri. I didn't realise there were two such guys, and now I can relax and link to Domenico, the one who sculpted the base to the monument for the heart of Henry II. Blunt, in Art and Architecture in France, 1500-1700, is quite clear about that, even though our article doesn't mention that he sculpted. No one much seems to mention Damiano (seven Googlebook hits), so you might be right that they could possibly be the same fellow.qp10qp 15:11, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
