Before I edit the page as it exists I want to offer this information for comment. I am author of the non-fiction book A President In the Family published by Greenwood in 2001. My fraternal grandfather's mother was a cousin of Daniel Hale Williams. Williams and Williams' biographer Helen Buckler corresponded with my grandfather. My grandfather, Howard D. Woodson (1876-1962) was born in Pittsburgh PA, worked for a short time in Chicago, but after 1908 he worked in Washington DC. A high school there is named in his honor. My great great great grandfather Thomas Williams, born in 1807, bought a Bible and recorded a family tree there. As of 1948 the Bible was kept by Charles Kelly of Pittsburgh. He was the son of Elizabeth Williams Kelly and grandson of Thomas Williams. My grandfather likely never saw the Bible, but information contained there was passed to him by his mother, Catherine Powell Woodson, daughter of Maria Williams Powell. The wife of Thomas Williams , Catherine lived until 1898 and likely kept family knowledge alive. --- The Helen Buckler biography places Daniel H. Wiliams' ancestors in York County PA. The U. S. census places my great great great great grandfather, Samuel Williams ( free colored) in Hellam Twsp. York County in 1810. Robert Hale (free colored) is also placed there in 1810, along with other Williams family members in mixed race families. Samuel is found in Harrisburg PA in the U. S. census in 1830. A Daniel Williams is found in Lewistown PA in 1830. Documentation other than the census places Thomas Williams there as well. Danile Hale Williams was born in Hollidaysburg PA in 1856. A slow westward migration is very clear. --- The father of Daniel Hale Williams is Daniel Williams. The grandfather is Daniel Williams Sr. (as per Buckler) . I submit that the great grandfather of Daniel Hale Williams was Samuel Williams. The father of Samuel Williams was Joseph Williams who was free in 1790 (as per U. S. Census ) and lived on Cresson's Alley in Philadelphia. Joseph Williams was born in 1760 and lived until sometime in the 1830s according to the recorded information kept by my grandfather.

Samuel Williams to Daniel Hale Williams edit

I am a descendant of Samuel Williams. Our Family has the Bible to which the original article refers. It was passed down from Thomas to Uncle Charlie to his nephew Barker to my mother and she gave it to her brother Maurice as the oldest male is supposed to have it. As Maurice has passed, the original Bible is now in the possession of his son, Maurice Jr. My family picks it up from this linage.

The Bible contains the family tree from Elizabeth Williams Kelly and all of her Children, of whom Uncle Charlie was one. Elizabeth lived to be over 93 and passed in Pittsburgh I believe.

We, then are able to trace the family back to 1760 and Samuel Williams. I hope to meet the cousins that are talked about in the original article.
