Question from Scribe-called-Jalala (20:20, 12 March 2024)

Hi @Bsoyka, I have another somewhat relevant question -- when you find a wrong website is linked in a reference clearly by mistake (e.g., a link that goes to a different article from the one cited), it's not a link rot by the definition of the term. In this case, is there a stand-alone url-status parameter to indicate it, or are we supposed to set it to dead because rotten or wrong it doesn't give us the expected information either way? --Scribe-called-Jalala (talk) 20:20, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

@Scribe-called-Jalala: Hey again! It depends on what the page links to now. If the page is now something completely inappropriate and the link should be disabled, use |url-status=unfit. If the entire domain is now completely inappropriate (similar to the last point but the entire website is an issue rather than just one page), use |url-status=usurped. If the URL is otherwise still live and leads to another viewer-appropriate page that no longer supports the article, use |url-status=deviated. For some more details, you can see Template:Citation Style documentation/url. Hope this helps! Bsoyka (tcg) 20:27, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, that page is greatly helpful. Let me ask you one more Q about this -- this may be a bit tricky example, but suppose someone cited a NYT article but wrongly inserted a WaPo article link by an apparently honest mistake, and both articles actually support the text substance-wise. Which url-status parameter would you use? None of them seems to exactly match. Obviously my question assumes we are still suppose to leave in the originally inserted wrong link in cases like this, but can we actually go in and replace a clearly wrong link with the right one in this case?
(And thank you so much for your mentorship!) Scribe-called-Jalala (talk) 20:57, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
@Scribe-called-Jalala: In that case, I wouldn't even worry about the |url-status= stuff. One of the core guidelines on Wikipedia is that you should be bold in your changes. Don't worry about trying to tag the URL somehow when you can fix the citation yourself! Bsoyka (tcg) 00:49, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
Great, many thanks again! Scribe-called-Jalala (talk) 04:07, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

BsoykaBot not working?

Hi Bsoyka. I was wondering when BsoykaBot might be up and running again to replace the newest TWL proxy links? SportsGuy789 (talk) 21:39, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

Hey! I'm working on fixing that right now — Toolforge sent me an email earlier saying today's run failed and I'm not sure why yet. I tried to make some updates earlier today but apparently it didn't like them! Bsoyka (tcg) 23:40, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Snake Saturday

On 29 March 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Snake Saturday, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Missouri's annual Snake Saturday parade originally began in a hotel parking lot with only four floats? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Snake Saturday. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Snake Saturday), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Question from Y17J19 (22:15, 29 March 2024)

Hi, I need help creating my own wiki page?! I used to be an international swimmer and seem to be the only on of that era that doesn’t have a page. Where do I start? --Y17J19 (talk) 22:15, 29 March 2024 (UTC)

@Y17J19: Hey there! To put it quite simply, I strongly recommend you don't. Please see here for some more information: Wikipedia:FAQ/Article subjects § Can I start an article about myself or my company? Bsoyka (tcg) 13:25, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Froggyloc on Draft:Flix Theaters and Brewhouse (13:04, 30 March 2024)

Hello there was no entry for this theater --Froggyloc (talk) 13:04, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

@Froggyloc: Hey there! Unfortunately, I think there are a few issues with your draft that likely won't allow it to pass a review and become an article. Namely, the content is written like an advertisement for the company (rather than a neutrally-worded description) and the text doesn't appear to be supported by reliable and independent sources. Bsoyka (tcg) 13:27, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Emmanuel Banini (16:39, 30 March 2024)

I want to create an article of MR. ARTIST . Please how do I start it --Emmanuel Banini (talk) 16:39, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

@Emmanuel Banini: Hey there! You can see Help:Your first article for more information—although I'd recommend you start with some simpler tasks first at the task center before attempting a project as significant as article creation. Bsoyka (tcg) 13:29, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

BsyokaBot Task 2

Hi. Is there something you can do to the bot so that it does not make this kind of edit? I get replacing proxy links with non-proxy links for, e.g., the |url parameter in a citation reference. But not in a "(TWL link)" link, where the entire purpose of the link is to be a proxy link. I'd suggest limiting it to replacing links in citation templates and not elsewhere. Levivich (talk) 17:19, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

@Levivich: Hey! To be honest, I'm really not sure I see the need to include TWL links next to citations like this. Wouldn't this confuse readers, who wonder what "TWL" means and click the link only to receive a blocking login page? Also, the whole point of citation templates is to bring simplicity and consistency. If anything, I'd say this should be proposed as a change to citation templates to add a TWL link automatically in the citation rather than trying to accomplish this on a small subset of pages using inconsistent plain text next to references.
As I've described at User:BsoykaBot/Task 2, editors wishing to get quick access to TWL-provided resources can use something like the Zotero browser extension, which automatically redirects you to TWL resources while keeping references and links more oriented toward readers rather than editors.
Finally, as a note, you can technically stop BsoykaBot from editing a page by following the instructions at User:BsoykaBot § Excluding a page. Bsoyka (tcg) 13:39, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Bsoyka,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Question from SoundCredit (11:41, 10 April 2024)

Hi Ben, I want to do a few things on Wiki, initially I wanted to edit an existing page (Age of Wonders 4 video game) to add a new entry for sound designer into the credits list, and to add my company name in there, which I did, but I do not see it updated on the page, so yeah, not sure what happened there... Also, linked to this, I wanted to add a new Wiki page for my company The Audio Guys, I started creating this in the Sandbox, but I can see no way of publishing it to the main wiki, maybe this is because I have only just created a wiki editor account.....not sure

Also, I am wondering how to add links into articles, is there some total beginners video or tutorial somewhere I could go through maybe...

Thanks for any help Dan --SoundCredit (talk) 11:41, 10 April 2024 (UTC)

@SoundCredit: Hey! Please see the message on your talk page explaining why this draft has since been deleted, and why it may not be the best idea to write about yourself and your company here. Also, see Wikipedia:FAQ/Article subjects § Can I start an article about myself or my company?. Bsoyka (tcg) 21:37, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
Hi @Bsoyka
Thanks for getting back to me on this.
I am a little disapointed that I seem unable to make any addtions or pages related to anything that I do or I have been involved with, not quite sure how people get their stuff added then, that is really strange. The Audio Guys company has done the sound design on 100s of different, very well known games over the last 20 years or so and yet there is no entry on the Wiki for the company, can you tell me how you get a company onto the Wiki then....I guess it is ok for larger companies to pay other people/PR firms to create the articles for them (Paid-contribution disclosure), so I guess that is how it id one.....that is a real shame :(
All I actually wanted to do was update the credits on this page
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Wonders_4
As 'The Audio Guys' did the sound design on this project (and all of Triumph Studios previous games too) and I saw that there was actually no entry for sound design in the list of credits, so I created the new entry and added in the credit, and then I realised that The Audio Guys also do not have an entry on the Wiki at all, which I was surprised about, so I went on to add that page too, but I see now that this update of mine has also been deleted/not accepted, along with the new company page. So yeh again, that is a real shame that I cannot make adjustments to an article related to something that I actually worked closely on for years and know all about.
I actually find it strange that there are no entries for 'sound designer' on any of the game entries on the Wiki at all, yet there is every other disicpline listed there, like music composer, etc, but I guess you are saying that I cannot actually add a sound design entry anywhere on the Wiki because I am a sound designer myself, and it would need to be someone who is not a sound designer who adds sound design entries.....maybe?
Anyway, I doubt any of my words will make any difference to anything, but yeh, I am pretty disapointed that I cannot actually do anything on the Wiki now :( I can understand if you remove stuff that is not factually correct, or stuff that is promotional for a company or things like that, but that is not what I did at all, and it was not like I am trying to add anything that is not 100% true or that is in some way incorrect/biased, these are facts I am trying to enter, which is what I thought the Wiki was all about.
So, what would you suggest for me to try and get an entry for my company onto the Wiki then, do I have to pay a PR firm or marketer to add the entry for me, is this how it is done?
And also, how do you get new entries/fields added into a game credits lists ?
Thanks for your time 2A0A:5584:156:0:EC6C:7B60:F1F0:5E0 (talk) 10:09, 15 April 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 May newsletter

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.

Question from Earthsong7 (16:01, 18 May 2024)

Hello, my goal is to start a page about Geneaolgy and reference family history, so I can set up links for all my references, any ideas? --Earthsong7 (talk) 16:01, 18 May 2024 (UTC)

@Earthsong7: Hey! What exactly do you mean by a page about Geneaolgy? If you mean the broad topic itself, that already exists. Bsoyka (tcg) 03:11, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Well, I mean a page about my own family history, and I tried creating a post, and obviously don't understand the procedure. I do some geneaology on my own family, and there is a reference to a family member on wikipedia now, but it is only a reference to a term he coined. Basically, I need some guidance on how to set up a page. 2001:569:FA12:2900:E84B:CD9D:AFA3:A033 (talk) 03:30, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from MertenMerten (23:01, 16 May 2024)

Hey, I found this page through suggested edits: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_NCAA_Division_I_men%27s_basketball_championship_game

I found a really simple copy edit to make, but looking at a page like that generated more questions about what kind of stuff is actually helpful. Here’s two: 1. The tag on the page says it’s reliant on 1 source, but sourcing seems much more robust. Should tag be removed? And if so, how does one do this (this is only my second edit, so I’m basically a little baby who doesn’t know very much). 2. Opening sentence is jangly: The 2011 NCAA Division I men's basketball championship game was the title game of the 2011 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament and it determined the national champion for the 2010-11 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. But maybe that’s intentional because of all the work that sentence is doing? Like any reader, I prefer concision, so I thought about making it: The 2011 NCAA Division I men's basketball championship game of the 2011 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament determined the national champion for the 2010-11 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. But would that be violating a particular kind of Wikipedia style? Thanks for thinking about my questions! --MertenMerten (talk) 23:01, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

@MertenMerten: Hey there, welcome to Wikipedia!
  1. Yeah, I'd say the article is probably good enough in that aspect for the tag to be removed. I've gone ahead and done so here, just removing the {{one source|date=April 2014}} code toward the top of the page.
  2. I'm not too sure; there's a chance that wording is standard across similar pages. Personally, I think either the original or your version would be okay.
Hope this helps just a bit, and sorry for the delay in getting back to you! Bsoyka (tcg) 03:10, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

yo bro how do i move the "this article has multiple issues" thing? i wanna move it to the top but copy and paste aint working (im on mobile btw) --Tidepod1898 (talk) 06:02, 9 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Cmfdbc (05:31, 12 June 2024)

Hi there! I was trying to edit a page and kept running into something I couldn’t solve.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_successful_English_Channel_swimmers#First_attempts

Under “First Attempts” the 3rd paragraph features the name “Charles Toth”. He does not have a Wikipedia page for himself. His link was previously a redirect to the swimmer Henry Sullivan which was incorrect. I attempted to change his name to a red link but was met with some sort of bug where a redirect would keep popping up when I tried to red link it. Any help here? First time red linking! --Cmfdbc (talk) 05:31, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

@Bsoyka The redirect was from Charles Toth to another swimmer where Toth was discussed, but as there's as much info about him in the "List of successful..." as there is in the Sullivan article, it makes more sense for Charles Toth to point to that list: I've retargetted the redirect, add him to the surname list page, and added another ref in the "List of successful.." article. PamD 13:54, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
@Cmfdbc: Let me know if PamD's message above makes sense or if you need more help! I think she seems to have resolved this pretty well. Bsoyka (tcg) 17:26, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Crypthicc (17:09, 14 June 2024)

How do I make a new article --Crypthicc (talk) 17:09, 14 June 2024 (UTC)

@Crypthicc: Hey there! I'm actually going to point you toward my essay on why you shouldn't start an article just yet. Correctly creating articles on Wikipedia takes a decent amount of experience, and you should try to build up your skills first before trying this. Bsoyka (tcg) 17:13, 14 June 2024 (UTC)

Best practice for old stubs with no references?

Hey @Bsoyka, Hope you're doing well. Hey, through suggested edits, I keep finding pages like Sherwood (company): stub pages, no sources, dead website. What's the best/kindest thing to do when I find such things? Do I prod it? Nominate to afd? Just move on? I think I'm pretty good at research, but when a company is a niche like audio equipment are there go to resources I might overlook? MertenMerten (talk) 05:15, 13 June 2024 (UTC)

@MertenMerten: Hey there! I'm with you here, I'm really not seeing much at all in terms of reliable sourcing available here. I'd say a PROD would be a good next step, adequately explaining that the company no longer seems to operate and there haven't been any reliable independent sources added to establish notability at least since a maintenance tag was added in April 2020. Bsoyka (tcg) 15:43, 13 June 2024 (UTC)
@Bsoyka: Thanks so much for your feedback! Cheers!

Question from MacNickel (00:38, 19 June 2024)

How do i write a biography of a living person --MacNickel (talk) 00:38, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

@MacNickel: Hey there! I'm actually going to point you toward my essay on why you shouldn't start an article just yet. Correctly creating articles on Wikipedia takes a decent amount of experience, and you should try to build up your skills first before trying this, especially when it comes to biographical articles about living people. However, if you're asking more about how to edit existing articles like this, WP:BLP is the place to start for related policies and guidelines. Bsoyka (tcg) 01:01, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
I've read a lot of policies and terms of use. The biography of the person i wanna write is someone i know very well and also had some appearances on the media. MacNickel (talk) 14:14, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
@MacNickel: In that case, I'm going to advise you even further not to create this article per our guidelines on conflicts of interest. Please try to gain some more experience in editing here first—reading policies and guidelines is one thing, but putting them into practice is entirely another. Bsoyka (tcg) 14:50, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Ok. But how long is it gonna be?
I mean, is it until some else do it i guess. MacNickel (talk) 14:53, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
@MacNickel: It's hard to say how long it would take for someone else to create the article. Who is the person, if you don't mind sharing? You could also try listing them at WP:RA and someone might pick it up. Bsoyka (tcg) 14:58, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Adanna Electra Joel. Thats her name.
Could you please write something about her for me then? MacNickel (talk) 15:24, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
@MacNickel: I'm seeing a lot of Facebook and YouTube posts but not much online in terms of reliable and independent sources. Do you have any other links you could share? Bsoyka (tcg) 15:43, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Look her up on LinkedIn and I'd advice you contact her. That will be best. I mean if it ok and convenient for you. MacNickel (talk) 19:02, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Also you can look up her profile in some of US Government programmes. MacNickel (talk) 19:21, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
@MacNickel: One of the main requirements in creating a Wikipedia article is establishing notability. This means she needs to be significantly covered by multiple independent sources. Here, we don't care as much about what an article's subject says about themselves, but rather what reliable sources say about them. Because of this, reaching out to her via LinkedIn wouldn't help here. Also, can you be a little more specific in what you mean by some of US Government programmes? A quick Google search didn't give me much to go off of. Bsoyka (tcg) 19:26, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

That Draft case fixing bot...

I just noticed you got bot approval almost a month ago. But has it run? Dicklyon (talk) 03:57, 23 June 2024 (UTC)

@Dicklyon: It has on a handful of pages. After that, I've been getting errors from Toolforge every time that task tries to run, and I still need to find time to try and resolve that. Bsoyka (tcg) 04:02, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
Ah, yes. The HaleBot that makes database reports was also getting a lot of errors, and reports didn't update for a long time. Apparently database queries got really slow or something. See Wikipedia talk:Database reports#HaleBot healthy?. Dicklyon (talk) 04:09, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
I think the issue for this task has something to do with the amount of logging data pywikibot spits out when it runs, and I think all that text filled up what little memory the task was given, so it won't even start anymore. Bsoyka (tcg) 04:18, 23 June 2024 (UTC)

Photo requests

Hi! I wonder if you do photo requests for the El Paso area. I have some ideas of places that can be photographed WhisperToMe (talk) 14:26, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

@WhisperToMe: Hey! I actually just moved to Kansas and haven't updated my userpage and whatnot yet, so I can't really do photos in Texas anymore. If I were still in El Paso, I'd definitely say yes. Very sorry about that! Bsoyka (talk) 14:38, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
It's fine! BTW if you're interested in doing photo requests in Kansas and I have a general idea of which part of the state, I can give ideas for that area too. WhisperToMe (talk) 14:39, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
Sure! We're still getting settled in, but I'm in the Leavenworth area. Bsoyka (talk) 14:49, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
Ok! I checked the Leavenworth USD 453 article and I found it does not yet have an image of the district's administrative offices (200 North 4th Street, Leavenworth, KS 66048). Leavenworth High School also does not yet have a photo (2012 10th Avenue, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048). When you're ready to take photos, these may be good ones to get first. The other schools don't yet have photos either, from what I see on the Commons, but I could leave the addresses now or later. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:13, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

Question from Balsamo Giulio (17:48, 7 July 2024)

Hi, i have a question about how to add a list of seasons/episodes on a TV show. I have re-written a arleady deleted and unaccepted draft and have reached a stubling point in my writing, a stumbling that has also been a question in my mind for a while now. My page has a section named eras, as the show i am writing about contains multiple eras in it's first eight seasons and i wanted to make a section explaining what the era is, what it is about and then make a sub-heading to list how many seasons that era lasted but i have no idea how to do it. I looked the code on multiple pages for this kind of stuff, but even if i copy the code from other pages and fix it for my own page, i can't get it to appear. I wonder if i'm supposed to firstly create a episode page for the show and then copy the data on the main page... or create a code for a new template. Like for example, list of Breaking Bad episodes.

Here's the link to show you what i'm meaning about, don't worry, i'm not done with the page yet, i wanna make it as good as i can. I think the information and the rules like online information from articles and websites are sufficient and good enough to give it a go. Although i'm not 100% sure this page can be made after all, it'll be my way to test how things work around here.

Link to the draft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Sam_and_Colby:_The_Paranormal

(Balsamo Giulio (talk) 20:22, 8 July 2024 (UTC))

@Balsamo Giulio: Hey! Before you try too hard to get the formatting right, I don't think an "eras" section really fits here. Unless I'm missing something, no reliable sources describe the seasons in terms of eras, and we can't just make those up on Wikipedia. Are these already described somewhere else? Question from Vilhena02 (22:26, 8 July 2024)

Hi Ben, I'm Victor! I would like to ask why my previous edit was re-edited when everything (for me) was apparently correct?? --Vilhena02 (talk) 22:26, 8 July 2024 (UTC)

@Vilhena02: Hey! It looks like the other user mainly just moved your added content up in the table a little bit. You can see the exact changes. Also, keep in mind Wikipedia is and always will be continuously growing and changing, and that's okay. Hope this helps a bit! Bsoyka (tcg) 02:02, 11 July 2024 (UTC)

Question from TwentyTwo Jason (17:20, 10 July 2024)

I want to start writing articles here on Wikipedia as well. And also monetize while at it --TwentyTwo Jason (talk) 17:20, 10 July 2024 (UTC)

@TwentyTwo Jason: In that case, you're absolutely in the wrong place. Wikipedia is not in any way a place to monetize your work. In fact, it's quite the opposite: all contributions to Wikipedia become freely licensed for anyone to use almost anywhere. However, if you'd like to try contributing without monetization, H:GS is a great getting-started guide to the encyclopedia. Hope this helps, and welcome to Wikipedia! @Guidegoose2: Hey there! You're talking about wikilinks—here's a quick tutorial on what they are and how to use them. Hope this helps! Bsoyka (tcg) 01:30, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Question from WikipedianAncientHistorian (01:22, 17 July 2024)

Just wondering, how do you create a wikipedia page? Love wikipedia and really want to increase its grand collection of knowledge --WikipedianAncientHistorian (talk) 01:22, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

@WikipedianAncientHistorian: Hey there! I'm actually going to point you toward my essay on why you shouldn't start an article just yet. Correctly creating articles on Wikipedia takes a decent amount of experience, and you should try to build up your skills before trying this. I know this isn't quite the answer you wanted to hear, but I hope it's one that helps you grow as a contributor to this great project. Happy editing, and reach out with whatever other questions you may have! Bsoyka (tcg) 02:28, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

Question from BlunderingBaffoonary on Radyr Comprehensive School (11:08, 17 July 2024)

Hi Ella Powell went to Radyr Comprehensive School https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ella_Powell

https://georgiastatesports.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/ella-powell/3937

Can you add her to the page? --BlunderingBaffoonary (talk) 11:08, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

@BlunderingBaffoonary: I actually encourage you to give it a shot! Anyone can edit Wikipedia, so would you like to go for it? Just hit the edit button on the page and start typing! Bsoyka (tcg) 13:15, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
I tried and it won't let me 2A02:C7C:BF78:2D00:6572:45E9:8976:D8EB (talk) 14:01, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
I'd love to try to help you resolve that—can you be more specific when you say "it won't let me"? As far as I can tell you should be able to edit that page. (Also, as a note, you seem to be logged out of your account now, which reveals your IP address as above instead of your username.) Bsoyka (tcg) 14:05, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

Articles

Thank you for the offer to talk - I will have a think about that. I am somewhat frustrated with various aspects and attitudes of Wiki but appreciate that isn't your fault! SnarkyDragon (talk) 21:19, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

Happy to help—I'll be here if you need me. Bsoyka (tcg) 21:42, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
I think it comes down to this ultimately - the person who reverted my article didn't display good faith - they just jumped on me and were really condescending.
(from wiki itself)
Demonstrate good faith[edit source]
Shortcut
WP:DGF
In addition to assuming good faith, encourage others to assume good faith by demonstrating your own good faith. You can do this by articulating your honest motives and by making edits that show your willingness to compromise, interest in improving Wikipedia, adherence to policies and guidelines, belief in the veracity of your edits, avoidance of gaming the system, and other good-faith behavior. Showing good faith is not required, but it aids smooth and successful interactions with editors.
Anyway I'll have a think about things and support appreciated :) SnarkyDragon (talk) 21:45, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

I like your style

In my random wanderings around WP, I just noticed your discussion with a newbie at the Teahouse. I appreciate the balance between kindness, clarity, and firmness. Not like you solved global warming or anything, but I just thought you struck the exact right note, and wanted to say thanks. That's really kind of how it should be. A quick glance at the rest of this talk page makes me even happier you're here. Cheers. --Floquenbeam (talk) 21:14, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

@Floquenbeam: Thank you so much for reaching out! You have no idea how much your appreciation means to me—I'm really glad you think I came across that way. Looking forward to seeing you around here, even if it's less than usual! (PS: love the policy-violating blog.) Bsoyka (tcg) 21:35, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
I probably should review your editing a little more, but I'm lazy and prone to jumping the gun. Would having the admin toolset be of any use to you? Your combination of article writing and problem-solving and cluefulness and 11k edits/7 years of experience are what I, at least, would want in an admin. If you're not interested, I won't pester, but if you think about it and want to explore the option some more, let me know. If nothing else, I could put you in touch with people far more experienced than me in nominating RFA candidates, and see what they think. --Floquenbeam (talk) 15:21, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
@Floquenbeam: I really appreciate the idea, and I'd definitely like to pick up the mop eventually. Although, while I think I could handle the tools carefully, I'm doubtful about how my editing activity could be perceived by potential !voters. While I've been contributing for a while, it's been a bit inconsistent (see xtools). Also, I still have a few content issues I've been working to distance myself from, and not sure how those would seem in an RfA. I would definitely be interested in hearing more opinions though, perhaps through the people you mention or an ORCP. Bsoyka (tcg) 15:54, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
ORCP is one option. I have no proof, but I have a gut feeling it might be better if you talked to one or two experienced people offline instead. I'm asking someone I trust if they'd be willing to look things over, and if they're too busy I have one or two others in mind. If it's OK, I'll point them in your direction. Might take a bit of time.
Whether the "skeletons" on that page you linked are a big deal or not probably depends mostly on when they happened. Floquenbeam (talk) 19:01, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
That's absolutely fine on my end, would love another opinion or two! I'm in no rush here of course, no stress on the timeline. Thanks again for the help and feedback! Bsoyka (tcg) 19:14, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
Bumping thread for 30 days. Bsoyka (tcg) 19:14, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
I see what you mean about inconsistent editing history. It wouldn't bother me, but I can see it bothering some. I think the people I have in mind would have a better opinion about that. Floquenbeam (talk) 19:15, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
Well I look forward to hearing from them! You know where to have them find me, my talk page and email are always open. Bsoyka (tcg) 19:20, 18 July 2024 (UTC)

Li-Fraumeni syndrome nomination

Thanks for the quick review! And apologies for incorrectly nominating the article. I just completed the CZI-sponsored Wiki science editing class which was great (and encouraging), but the whole process still seems very technical. I find even the instructions regarding nominating the article difficult. I'll try again. Germlinep53 (talk) 19:59, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

@Germlinep53: I always hate to be the bearer of bad news around here, so I apologize if I discouraged you in any way. As I'm sure you've seen, Wikipedia can be really technical, specific, and hard-to-understand in some areas, and DYK is no different. To put it simply, though, DYK is mainly intended for sharing new articles. So, in that sense, unless you make some really significant changes to the Li–Fraumeni syndrome article (bringing it to meet the GA criteria or expanding its text 5x), it won't be eligible for DYK. I hope that makes a bit more sense, but please don't hesitate to reach out with more questions. Bsoyka (tcg) 20:27, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
Eh - "no fear" about being the bearer of bad news. Someone has to do it.  :-) But, yes, your latest (text) explanation above does better clarify eligibility. I appreciate your feedback and thank you for your time! Best regards! Germlinep53 (talk) 20:56, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

Horizons for Homeless Children draft

Hi Bsoyka! A few years ago you helped me with my draft for Breaktime (organization). I'm currently writing more Wikipedia pages for nonprofits in Boston doing impactful work. Could you please take a look at my draft for Horizons? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Horizons_for_Homeless_Children

Thanks so much! Let me know if there's anything else I need to add WikiSpitfire (talk) 18:10, 8 July 2024 (UTC)

@WikiSpitfire: Hey! Yes, I remember that! Your draft looks pretty good at a first glance. I'm somewhat busy in the real world right now but would be happy to come back and take a deeper look later. Bsoyka (tcg) 02:00, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, whenever you have the time! I appreciate your help. WikiSpitfire (talk) 14:33, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
Do you think I can use this article? https://concordbridge.org/index.php/2024/03/23/concord-quietly-welcoming-migrants-to-local-emergency-shelter/
It has some good information about one of their programs. It's from a local news outlet called the Concord Bridge WikiSpitfire (talk) 18:06, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
@WikiSpitfire: I don't see why not! Seems like a reliable source to me—and this page on their website is especially reassuring. Bsoyka (tcg) 19:59, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
@WikiSpitfire: Hey again! I've just accepted and published your article. Great work! Bsoyka (tcg) 18:26, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
Thanks again for your help! In the future, if I write another article that is at a similar level in terms of quality, can I move it from draft into article without going through the articles of creation? I saw that because I've done 10 edits, I can make articles directly. WikiSpitfire (talk) 13:22, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
@WikiSpitfire: You absolutely can, but I'll advise you to still be careful when creating new articles. What I do is put together my drafts inside my userspace until I'm sure they meet all the relevant policies, especially WP:GNG. For example, my draft for Ray Hugh Garvey lives at User:Bsoyka/Drafts/Ray Hugh Garvey until I'm ready to move it into the main article space. You don't have to use this process, but it's what I do and recommend. As always, I'm here if you have further questions and looking forward to seeing what else you create. Happy editing! Question from Fotizokings (12:28, 24 July 2024)

Hello I am an author of two independently published novels. How do I create my own article about myself and my books for people to read and have knowledge about my work? --Fotizokings (talk) 12:28, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

@Fotizokings: Hey there! I'm going to strongly advise against doing any of that for a lot of reasons:
  1. Wikipedia is not a place for advertising or promotion. I understand it's tempting to share your work with the world here, but that's simply not what Wikipedia is here for.
  2. Since you have a conflict of interest, you won't truly be able to write about yourself and your work in a neutral point of view, which is something we require. This is why we have a guideline strongly against autobiographies.
  3. Correctly creating articles on Wikipedia takes a lot of experience, and you should try to build up your skills before writing a new article about any subject. See my essay on this for a little more information there.
I know this isn't quite the answer you wanted to hear, but I hope it helps you grow as a contributor to this great project. Happy editing, and reach out with whatever other questions you may have! Bsoyka (tcg) 13:35, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

Autopatrolled granted

Hi Bsoyka, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Elli (talk | contribs) 15:08, 29 July 2024 (UTC)

Bot bug

Getting anywhere on that pywikibot problem? Maybe it's got too long a list of things to work on, and that fills up memory? It's hard to imagine logging so much that it fills up anything like the amount of memory that programs tend to be given these days. Dicklyon (talk) 06:36, 4 July 2024 (UTC)

@Dicklyon: I haven't had a chance to work on it, sorry (currently in the middle of moving to a new house). Bsoyka (tcg) 01:54, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
Have a good move! Dicklyon (talk) 02:19, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
@Dicklyon: Hey! Forgot to update here, but I did get the bot working. I think it was the logging, as when I stopped most of the logs all seemed to work again. (And the move went great too!) Unpinning this section now to let it archive naturally unless there's anything else! Bsoyka (tcg) 20:35, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
That's great! Thanks! Can I see the logs, as I've almost forgotten the scope of what we were doing. And would you be interested in doing more such, e.g. for links to over-capitalized 2020 United States Census (and previous years)? Dicklyon (talk) 20:48, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
Never mind logs. I see from the contribs that it did about 3000 today. The plan is to keep doing about that many daily? I'm glad your move was good. Dicklyon (talk) 20:55, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
@Dicklyon: The plan for this one is 1,000 daily per the BRFA. I'd be happy to implement similar tasks like that, as it should be fairly easy to do, assuming the tasks are given proper community consensus and relevant BRFAs. (For example, that census task alone could affect another ~38,000 pages; that absolutely deserves its own discussion and approval.) Do you happen to have links handy to any discussions about the capitalization of "census"? Bsoyka (tcg) 22:37, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
Definitely need the BRFA for such a task. Maybe they'll agree that the discussion at Talk:2020 United States census/Archive 1#Requested move 16 November 2020 is enough. Dicklyon (talk) 00:05, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
@Dicklyon: I don't think an RM thread alone is enough to establish consensus on this. Compared to the NFL draft RfC, which showed consensus on changes to article text and titles, the RM technically only shows consensus on changes to titles. Given the amount of discussion over this fact in the other bot request, I think a defined consensus for changing article text is needed, perhaps at WP:VPR. Changing titles = editing 25 articles; simple enough. Changing text = editing 37,982 articles; not so simple. Bsoyka (tcg) 01:32, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
Let's see if this goes anywhere useful: WP:VPP#Fixing over-capitalization by bot. Dicklyon (talk) 04:00, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

Alert

Before doing or making any comments first check what they did with Bangladeshi students. If you think they did right then I have nothing to say. If you think they did wrong then you should recommend those pages for deletion. Othalowaitz (talk) 01:35, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

@Othalowaitz: I'm not familiar with the subject area, but I am familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. As an encyclopedic project, Wikipedia does not care about what you or I think is "right" or "wrong." We care about what is notable and share information as provided in reliable sources. As such, attempts to hijack or "delete" pages like you're doing, removing that information from reliable sources, is absolutely not tolerated. Please see WP:RGW for more information, and stop your attempts to "right great wrongs" as that pages describes it. Bsoyka (tcg) 01:41, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Idaho State Veterans Cemetery

draft https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Afsheen_(musician)

Hi Ben! Do you have experience reviewing article about musicians? I saw you at the tea house, it says you contribute to many areas. I have been making contributions to wikipedia recently, to the unrepresented areas in entertainment. I had discussions with other editors about this draft on the talk page here of this editor. Many agreed it meets the WP:BIO The editor who reviewed it does not feel confident reviewing it, as they are not sure like me. I made a lot of improvements, and red to keep it neutral.

I think it is article number 4 or so I made. I never made articles about a musicians. J2009j (talk) 07:35, 3 August 2024 (UTC)

@J2009j: Hey there! I'll take a look at it soon. I'm sure you can understand why I might be a bit hesitant to approve it quickly given the long list of declines and comments from other experienced reviewers. Bsoyka (tcg) 15:13, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. I looked for more sources after that, and added all. J2009j (talk) 15:46, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
@J2009j: Hey—I finally got a chance to take a closer look. I'd lean toward approval, but I think I feel the same as CFA in my hesitance due to the potential issues with the independence/reliability of the sources per your discussion with him. The Latin Grammy nomination makes a good argument for his notability, but I'm just not quite certain enough to review it either way. I'm sorry to disappoint you further here, but I'm sure someone will get to it again soon enough. Apologies again, and best of luck with this one! Bsoyka (tcg) 04:11, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! J2009j (talk) 04:22, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

Hey

Hey Ben, somebody banned my page for me literally not adding one sentence. You can check out my page VIA profile I think, but it's called How A Black Bear Nearly Caused Nuclear War- which the US government verified- along with many other organisations, and CHATGPT. please help in this case. Apparently it was because it was a hoax.. I said there was a supposed soviet saboteur but it turned out to be a bear. Nuclear war nearly started because the planes wereon Defcon 2 and the alert sent out because they thought it was a saboteur the Soviets were trying to destroy the nukes in the nuclear arsenal, where this event takes place. So apparently I didnt explicitly say that, but the context is more than enough..all that was needed was a slight edit. I said straight after the soviet saboteur, they saw a black bear and that was nearly the cause of nuclear war. I forgot to mention they were both the same character. Couldve just asked me, referring to the guy who banned it, but I guess not. WikipedianAncientHistorian (talk) 03:29, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

@WikipedianAncientHistorian: Hey! Please see this response on your talk page explaining why a separate article about this is not needed. I'd assume the article was originally tagged for deletion because it lacks any reliable sources in the article. Also, for future reference, ChatGPT is unreliable. Bsoyka (tcg) 03:41, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from Poeticdiligence (17:09, 6 August 2024)

I'm just diving into editing and creating articles. I want to expand and draft articles dealing with historic theatres and authors. How long approximately does it take to get your drafts review? I saw 3 months. Wanted to see how accurate that is. Thanks in advance for any help. --Poeticdiligence (talk) 17:09, 6 August 2024 (UTC)

@Poeticdiligence: Hey! The timeline for draft review really isn't set in stone, because reviewers can handle drafts in any order. The current 3-month estimate is based on when the earliest unapproved draft was submitted, so it's generally a "maximum" wait time.
I've gone ahead and reviewed your current draft, Draft:Judah Mahay, and I declined it because it doesn't use a neutral tone. This is hard to do, of course, when writing about yourself or people you're close to, which is why we generally advise against writing autobiographies or other articles with which you have a conflict of interest. In general, if you're notable enough, someone else who isn't connected to you will write about you eventually. I also personally advise against creating new articles when you're new to Wikipedia, for reasons I've outlined in this essay.
I know this isn't exactly what you want to hear, but I recommend stepping away from trying to write about yourself and your family, and try contributing somewhere else. Wikipedia has 6,872,652 articles—there has to be one that interests you somewhere! Bsoyka (tcg) 17:15, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
This is a great help. Thanks. I'll focus on editing other pieces for awhile. I have revised the article and made it significantly more neutral and encyclopedic. I hope that is sufficient. Thank you again. I look forward to see how I contribute to other articles in the future. Poeticdiligence (talk) 18:03, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
@Poeticdiligence: It's a bit closer, but I'm still not sure it's ready for approval yet. On a related note, another concern I have is notability; see here. Looking at the list of sources, many of them don't meet our reliability or independence criteria, which isn't necessarily bad, but it means those sources don't prove your notability. What do you think are the three best sources in your article that are independent of you, reliable in their content, and significantly cover you rather than passing mentions? Bsoyka (tcg) 18:41, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
Great question:
I have three significant sources that center on me or my work.
The acceptance into the internationally acclaimed Artist Residence at the Watermill Center.
https://www.watermillcenter.org/artists-2010/
Pro-paying publication of "Soul Requisition."

https://www.27east.com/arts/artifacts-at-watermill-center-come-to-life-in-an-action-tale-from-a-writer-in-residence-1372925/
And two that are significant sources with passing mentions.
Judging for the Million Writers Award by storySouth.
https://www.jasonsanford.com/jason/2012/05/20/million-writers-award-notable-stories-of-2011
Honored Mention for the Writers of the Future Contents.
https://writersofthefuture.com/writers-of-the-future-2nd-quarter-winners-announced-for-volume-41/ Poeticdiligence (talk) 19:01, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
@Poeticdiligence: I appreciate you taking the time to find those! I'm still not quite sure, but I think you're much closer to approval now. I'll leave it to another reviewer to make the call. In the meantime, I recommend you go through and remove anything in the draft not directly supported by a source—there seem to be a few paragraphs sprinkled throughout with no citations. Bsoyka (tcg) 21:13, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
All done! Just added a bunch more citations and deleted a few items. Thank you so much. Poeticdiligence (talk) 21:53, 6 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from Poeticdiligence (15:52, 8 August 2024)

Ben, I updated the following article with citations (it had almost none) and added a few more facts. Can you look it over and see how I did? Thanks in advance for any advice.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sara_King --Poeticdiligence (talk) 15:52, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

@Poeticdiligence: Definitely see the improvement! I will just say to be wary of ISFDB; some editors may find it unreliable because it appears to be user-generated content. Bsoyka (tcg) 19:50, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
Good point. Thanks. Poeticdiligence (talk) 20:51, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Yolanda Camarena

The article Yolanda Camarena has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Per discussion on talk involving article creator, there is not enough significant coverage in independent reliable sources to confer notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 21:26, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from Mia at Fulwood (17:17, 16 August 2024)

Hello. i have read an article in Wikipedia called the "Gwydyr Forest". I have more information about the Gwydyr and also details of the book where I found that information. Can I now edit that article to include my information and also add the details of the book i read to those books already listed in the article? I opened my account yesterday and so a beginner, although I have donated to Wikipedia in the past. Thanks --Mia at Fulwood (talk) 17:17, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

@Mia at Fulwood Absolutely! Wikipedia's entire premise is that anyone can contribute to its articles. Feel free to edit that article and others you come across. Our getting started page may also be of interest to you, and I've added more helpful links to your talk page. Happy editing! Bsoyka (tcg) 17:32, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
