Co-op mentorship

Hello Brotothextrem, I'm Huon, your Co-op mentor. You said you wanted to learn about the Wikipedia community, and to edit as part of a group. The community is quite diverse, and it's difficult to say something about it in general. If you are interested in a particular topic, there may be a WikiProjet that can offer help and collaboration - those are loosely organized groups of editors who share an interest in a specific topic, ranging from military history via literature to specific TV shows, countries or rather technical tasks such as sorting very short articles. There's also the Guild of Copyeditors and the Typo Team. All those projects have talk pages where issues of general interest to the project can be discussed or questions within the project's area of interest can be asked. Many also have dedicated member lists, but you can contribute to the projects without formally becoming a member. And there's the WikiCup, a yearly friendly challenge to see who can create the best content. The current one is already underway, so you may have to wait a bit until the next one opens for participation - and to be honest, creating content of the quality required to do well in the WikiCup will need a little more experience than you currently have. If you're looking for an overview of tasks that need doing, the community portal maintains lists of maintenance tasks. I think I better stop here for now lest you feel overwhelmed - while there's a rich community, there's no need to participate in it any more than you want to; ultimately Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a social network, and the community is a means to an end, not an end in itself.
