Comyn Lord of Badenoch coat of arms enquiry

Hi Brianann, I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction to identify the correct coat of arms for the Comyn, lordship of Badenoch c.1306? Regards Newm30 (talk) 10:40, 10 December 2016 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Newm30: the Gelre Armorial has Azure three garbs Or within a double tressure flory counter-flory of the same, attributed to “A Comijn“. See File:Blason Clan Cumming, Lord de Badenoch (selon Gelre).svg.—Odysseus1479 03:53, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks @Odysseus1479: I have also seen it depicted as Gules, three garbs Or? Could this be an earlier version? Regards Newm30 (talk) 04:20, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
According to McAndrew (Scotland's Historic Heraldry, p.45), John III Comyn, Lord of Badenoch is likely the "Jon Comyn" whose arms ('gules, three garbs argent') are given in Collins' Roll. Although elsewhere McAndrew notes that the Comyn arms in this armorial are not found elsewhere, and therefore advises caution in linking them to individuals (Scotland's Historic Heraldry, p.47).--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 01:08, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I think I will err on the side of caution and not use the arms for these people. Regards Newm30 (talk) 01:49, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

Stewart - Earl of Menteith coat of arms

Another question closer to the Hebrides. Can you advise whether the coat of arms of the "Moramers" of Mentieth mirrors that of the Earl of Perth  ? It looks very similar. Also Walter Bailloch Stewart changed his coat of arms to [1] and then John de Mentieth seems to have another coat of arms [2]. Hope you can provide some insight. Regards Newm30 (talk) 03:04, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

I'm not sure there is any actual historical heraldry of the earliest earls. McAndrew (Scotland's Historic Heraldry, on Google Books, p.51) states that since Walter Bailloch's son, Alexander, Earl of Menteith, bore a seal which "reputedly bore Three bars wavy surmounted by a fess chequy with a label of five points in chief ... an overly cluttered coat for this period, it has been proposed that the original arms of the earldom were three bars wavy, to which the colours of argent and azure have been added on the grounds that the earldom is watered by three rivers!". McAndrew also states that the arms of Alexander's mother, the heiress of Menteith, are unknown.
According to McAndrew (Scotland's Historic Heraldry, p.136), it was Walter's son, John Menteith, who adopted that bend coat you've linked to first ('or, a bend chequy sable and argent'), first evidenced by the Bute Mazer. McAndrews dates this adoption to about 1315. Earlier John bore the seal pictured at: Aonghus_Óg_of_Islay#Shift_of_allegiance_to_the_Bruce_cause.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 01:07, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks once again. I think I will use the coat of arms depicted on the seal. Just need someone to upload [3] onto Wikicommons as my computer at home is down and I am working from my Android tablet. Regards Newm30 (talk) 01:53, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
I don't think the article should show a coloured image of arms for Walter. The thing is that McAndrew doesn't give any tinctures Walter's arms. As far as I can see the only heraldry he specifically links to Walter is a seal ('a fess chequy with a label of fivepoints in chief') and the arms displayed on Walter's effigy ('a chequered fess with a label of seven points'). I think the best thing is to just leave it at that, at least for him. There's an image of the seal here: Aonghus_Mór#Factionalism_after_Alexander_III.27s_death.
There's evidence of Menteith heraldry in the last years of the thirteenth century in the form of the painted Lord Marshal's Roll. I think it must be the Stewart shield shown here [4]. The variance in the surviving evidence is interesting. I wonder why the labels in Walter's seal and effigy are different? I wonder if one of these was a contemporaneous mistake; or maybe the precise number didn't matter to contemporaries; or maybe the effigy was incorrectly manufactured or renovated at a later date? I don't know. Apparently the lion shown in Lord Marshal's Roll is thought to represent a claim to the earldom of Fife (according to Wikipedia at least, Alan, Earl of Menteith married a member of the Fife family).--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 01:02, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
No expert, but I don’t think the difference between the labels is very significant. Parker’s Glossary says “In the oldest rolls of arms the labels are all of five points; but labels of three points were at an early period used interchangeably.” In general it’s my impression that early differencing of arms was not very systematic at all, and even in the modern era many of the more detailed and elaborate rules, such as may be found in classic heraldic texts, seem to have been largely ignored in practice.—Odysseus1479 02:16, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
I think you're probably right.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 01:22, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

Scottish clan

Why did you find it appropriate to delete the entire content of the Scottish clan talk page? Years of discussion and the resolution of differences were recorded and are now no longer available. These will only re-surface and have to be dealt with again. Not a good or thoughtful move, but sadly one that talk page editors, such as yourself, seem to feel it is OK to do. Shipsview (talk) 10:00, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

@Shipsview: Did you see that there is an archive link on the page? The recent confusion and problems were caused on multiple pages by another editor who first added an auto archive bot without seeking consensus, set the link on Scottish Clans to the wrong page, then deleted the link to the archive rather than fixing the problems. There is a discussion at WP:SCOTLAND: [5] I think Brianann MacAmhlaidh was acting in good faith to try and remedy these problems. Drchriswilliams (talk) 10:16, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you Shipsview (talk) 20:30, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Chris. Shipsview, just to be clear, it was User:Springchickensoup who archived the page and then removed the links that were supposed to link to the archive. My edits were about making sure the links to the archive at least displayed and worked. I agree with you that the talkpage should be restored. User:Mutt Lunker thinks the same.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 01:42, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
It is a problem that affects many Talk pages where new information panels are being installed. Not sure what can be done? Shipsview (talk) 10:16, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
I think the best thing is to immediately leave a note on the talkpage itself. If you don't get any responseI think you're perfectly entitled to revert. In Springchickensoup's case, it seems that he attempting to hide some discussions he had on certain talkpages - that's not a good reason to archive them.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 01:51, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

The name Sir J. Gilchrist Mure cited as Sir Gilchrist Muir

The name Sir J. Gilchrist Mure is later confused with the Muir family & cited in the body of information as Sir Gilchrist Muir in ( Sir Gilchrist Muir built two chapels, one at the Well named for......) This should be reviewed & corrected. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jackiered (talkcontribs) 18:25, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

@Jackiered: Hello. I'm sorry I'm not sure what I can do for you. The article is poorly written in places, I don't know much about the family, and I don't have access to the cited source (Cuninghame, Topographized by Timothy Pont). Do you know if this book calls him "Sir J. Gilchrist Mure"? If it does - or if you have a better source - you can go ahead and tweak the article yourself. Was this Gilchrist a different individual than the one mentioned earlier in the article?--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 00:45, 11 March 2017 (UTC)
I've copied your comment over to the article's talkpage Talk:Clan Muir. Maybe it'll catch the attention of someone who can sort this out.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 00:55, 11 March 2017 (UTC)
