Hi! Are you an AfC reviewer? I ask because I see that you've been accepting drafts, but I don't see your name on the list of reviewers. So then I wondered if you had read the bold-face message that reads "PLEASE NOTE: Editors whose usernames are not on the list are strongly cautioned not to review AfC submissions". May I suggest that if you want to be a reviewer (and more are surely needed), you should make a request in the usual way? I think that'd be better. I'm not particularly comfortable with some of the pages you've accepted, and am going to ask what others think of them, and whether they should be moved back to draft. Date templates

I see you are editing many date templates but there are several types of errors:

• Changing output of existing templates so current uses break, e.g. changing month and year in {{LastMonth}} to only month when you redirected to {{LASTMONTHNAME}}. You also removed the option to specify the start month to subtract a month from. Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:LastMonth may look like there are no "real" uses to be compatible with but all six templates listed there are used by an active archiving bot which uses substitution to make navigation headers in archive pages. E.g. at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2018 June 29 where the May link correctly goes to Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/May 2018 but would have been broken in your version. I have reverted your edits to four templates {{Lmonth}}, {{LastMonth}}, {{Nmonth}}, {{NextMonth}} so the next archiving run of the bot doesn't save broken substitutions.
• Preventing substitution from working. See WP:SAFESUBST. For example, {{subst:NEXTMONTHNAME}} currently saves the code {{#time:F|+1 month}} which always renders as a month after it is viewed. {{subst:NEXTMONTHNAME}} should save August now so it always renders as August. Date templates are often used with substitution.
• Referring to named parameters as name instead of {{{name}}}, e.g. in [1]. See Help:Template#Handling parameters.
• Placing noinclude after a newline which will then be included in pages using the template, e.g in [2]. This often gives unwanted whitespace. A noinclude part should nearly always start at the end of an existing line and not a new line.

Hello Brandon, I was very confused when I was watching FRIENDS the other day and found out Rachel's last name was spelt "Greene". I went to wikipedia to check if what I saw was true. When I saw that it said "Green" I created a wikipedia accont to see if I could change it to what I saw on TV. Once I made the edit, I was showered in rude remarks and limricks from you! I really thought that wikipedia would be easier to talk to and make edits on. I have absolutly no faith and hope in wikipedia and hope that you learn from your actions. @Kailynpalmer: Unfortunately wikipedia has polices, a lot of policies. I had many of my edits undone when I first started (hundreds of edits). The issue was that your were changeling the name of links that messed up the page (making them red) If you can provided me with a reliable source (already on the page or not) I can do the renaming and/or page moving process for you. That has nothing to do with boldfacing. I've restored the proper template code and documentation. Wikipedia does not have templates as wrappers for basic HTML elements that are re-implemented in '''wikimarkup'''; attempts to create them have repeatedly been deleted at WP:TFD; even {{span}} and {{div}} were deleted. We only have template wrappers for non-wikimarkup elements, and mostly only those used in semantic markup: {{em}}, {{strong}}, {{code}}, {{var}}, {{kbd}}, {{samp}}. PS: The fact that {{B}} is intended to be substituted is irrelevant. Many templates are, and will even throw an error if you don't do it.  — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼  05:43, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Irish Motorway service stations

Why create trivial, non-notable articles like Rathcoole services and Paulstown services, clogged with even more trivia about coffee machines, picnic tables, and car washes? Are you going to update each one when a Subway is replaced by a Burger King? When they're closed for servicing? Note https://motorwayservices.ie is probably not a reliable source for determining notability, even if "true". Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a travel guide, or business directory, and not everything belongs in Wikipedia. Surely your efforts are better off spent on more notable topics. Time templates

Your recent changes to these templates have been introducing errors to some of the pages they are included on, and so adding them to Category:Pages with script errors. You can see the errors also reported on the template pages: e,g this version of Template:Current daylight saving offset in New Zealand is a member of the category. Some recent edits to something (not sure what) added over 20 pages to Category:Pages with parser function time errors. For example, User:Ikmac has

Your addition of a template indicating that Template:Time Zone should be added

I have reverted almost all of your additions of this template during an AWB run on August 10. Infoboxes are not mandatory, and many of the pages present complex historical information that would be hard to represent using an infobox. Others already have one or even two other, more appropriate boxes: Time in Europe, Time in the Middle East, Time in Africa, Time in Russia ... A few, such as Jet lag, are not time zones at all. I found only one page where I felt the addition of the template would be a clear improvement: Sri Lanka Standard Time, which was instead using Infobox:School with an ad hoc illustration. You could more usefully have performed the substitution of templates yourself rather than slapping on a maintenance template. In fact, since unlike me you understand templates well, I request you fix my edit, which leaves an error message regarding the "Current time". It struck me that there are some remaining regions of the world that don't have their own boxes like Time in Africa, etc., so if you really feel there should be an infobox whenever possible, consider creating Time in Oceania or Time in Asia instead. But in many cases there are informative graphics in use that are as much or more useful, such as the International Dateline one. Yngvadottir (talk) 06:23, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Template/module editing needs care

I monitor Category:Pages with script errors and have had to purge several articles that were in that category due to your edits at various templates/modules. I see that the issue was discussed at VPT (permalink) where mention was made of the recent ANI discussion. A previous discussion was at User talk:BrandonXLF/Archives/2018#Time templates which involved issues raised by three editors with no response from you.

Templates and modules are not the place for bold editing. The first step should be to outline any proposals on the appropriate talk page and give time for any opinions. The purpose of any edits should always be clear from the edit summary which can link to the talk page discussion if necessary. Editing should occur in the template or module sandboxes with appropriate testing before edits that affect articles are made.

I'm aware of this. I read WP:Bot policy and know how to use a bot. The reason I didn't replay to User talk:BrandonXLF/Archives/2018#Time templates was because there was an other discussion about the same issue elsewhere and all the edits were reverted. I reverted your edit at Module:ISO 3166 because it introduced errors in at least the following articles: Luonan Subdistrict, Page Center, Iowa, River Lydden, Seethangoli. I then checked your contributions to see if I should undo any related changes you might have made to templates or modules. However, there are far too many for me to check. For example, edits to templates shows 52 edits on or after 13 September 2018, and edits to modules shows 107 edits in the same period. I don't want to spend time investigating a complex set of templates/modules to work out exactly what caused the errors in the articles listed above. Before doing anything, I observed that Luonan Subdistrict (like the others) was displaying an ugly error message in the infobox. To check it wasn't a caching issue, I edited the article and previewed it with no change. The preview showed the same error. Then I looked at "related changes" and saw that you had recently edited Module:ISO 3166. I edited the revision of that module just before your edit and previewed how Luonan Subdistrict appeared with the old module. There was no error. I therefore reverted your edit to the module and that fixed the problem in each of the listed articles. It may be that your edit was not at fault—it could, for example, have revealed a problem in some other template/module and that problem might have only been temporary. However, I'm not going to examine exactly what's going on given all the templates/modules recently edited. I cannot reproduce the problem at the moment so have no idea what the fundamental cause was, but it was real as the testing showed. While briefly thinking about that I noticed recent edits to Module:ISO 3166/data/National which may have been relevant. That module is transcluded on 479,882 pages and its history shows an edit war on 12 September 2018. Don't do that. Prepare stuff in a sandbox, test that it works, then deploy the sandbox versions. There should be single edit to the main template/module, and that edit should be to copy the sandbox. Johnuniq (talk) 01:51, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

A few words of advice...

Since you've had a request for Template Editor declined recently, and you're still active on the templates I'm assuming that you still have it in mind to reapply sometime. Can I offer you some advice?

• There's very little that is urgent. A new change, which isn't an urgent bug-fix, can take its time. Discussions usually go on for at least a week.
  • Template talk pages are dull and overlooked places - it helps to solicit more input from the relevant WikiProject talk pages.
  • Wikipedians are volunteers who have obligations in the real world, they don't jump to for each request or {{ping}}. Show some patience, & avoid creating the impression that you're in an unnecesary rush.
• Test your changes. In the proper places. Check your test results. Don't just test the conditions you're sure will work or are run-of-the mill. Don't ask others to check the results before you've checked them yourself.
• Repeatedly re-opening the edit requests before addressing all the issues raised in the previous rejection tries everybody's patience and almost guarantees another rejection.
• If you have a bunch of similar requests, make one. Wait for it to be implemented. Wait a little longer to see if it hits any problems in the real world. Then make the rest of the requests citing the first as an example. There's little that's more off-putting than going to User:AnomieBOT/TPERTable to check the work queue and seeing a bunch of changes with no testing, little by the way of rationale, and no precedent.
• Back in the day, when sitting exams, they used to say "show your working". It helps. Comments which defy any verification like "Everything looks fine, I'm done editing it." sound more like proof by assertion and do not help your case.

Feel free to ignore this if you wish, but don't be surprised if the rejections pile up and count against you the next time you apply for TE.

@JohnBlackburne: There is a strange problem at Module:Location map/data which was recently created and then blanked. For some reason the documentation page is showing tons of errors. I suspect that speedy deleting the page per {{db-author}} would solve the problem if you wouldn't mind. Yes, the problem is the page at Module:Location map/data should not exist, it serves no purpose and is causing the errors as it causes the documentation page to be generated on a page without geographic data. Module:Jcon

I have reverted your changes to Module:Jcon. Your changes broke at least one page, Ontario Highway 11, due to violating the expensive parser function limit. Your changes also led to unnecessary duplication with Module:Jct. {{Jcon}} now uses the previous module version written in 2014, designed to mimic the original {{jcon}} functionality by acting as an interface to {{jct}}. The data for shields, links, and abbreviations should be added to Module:Road data/strings/CAN/ON, which is used by {{jct}}. I have undone your changes to {{lm}} as unexplained, unnecessary and damaging. The template though not much used has been used, and so changing it breaks those uses. Edit summaries

I have seen it mentioned a few times now, and looking through your contribution history I have to agree - you really need to start using edit summaries, and using the "Preview" option so you're not making 10 edits when 1 would do. The former needs to be done so that editors know what you've changed (in general) without having to look at the diff, and the latter is so that one doesn't have to scroll through a half-dozen changes when looking at diffs. AdWords to Google Ads CP move

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give AdWords a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Google Ads. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution.

The reason I have reverted or rollbacked all your CP move edits is that the title "Google Ads" has been opposed by a discussion here (Talk:AdWords#Requested move 24 July 2018. We need to confirm whether "Google Ads" is the common name, rather than "AdWords". I suggest you start a request move discussion in the talk page as I did before. For article page move problems caused by redirects namespace, it can be done here (Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests. Your changes to to "0s" decades and centuries

Check what templates links to "0s". These year-navigation templates all assume that the decade is the primary topic. You can't just boldly make the kind of changes you've been making without breaking stuff. A lot of template work was required to move the years AD 1 through AD 10 off of the primary topic for the bare number. Note that 11 the year is ambiguous, as are years/numbers up to 100, while 101 and above are years. These kind of changes should be discussed first, as they require a lot of back-end work to coordinate the changes so that they are made smoothly without too much disruption of the navigation templates and navigation between related articles. I'm going to revert some of your changes so that further discussion and analysis can be done. You really need to just stop. The test cases being broken doesn't warrant you redirecting it to another page. Again, I will defer to Salvio giuliano and EdJohnston to decide what you can and cannot do. I am NOT an admin so I cannot make those rulings. My personal advice would be spend some time looking at the wikipedia backlog and contributing in other ways. Can I recommend cleaning out Category:Pages using infoboxes with thumbnail images? This is an almost daily task...

You were blocked because of your work on templates. Personal advice would be not to IMMEDIATELY jump right back into editing templates, even if you are being careful and only editing in the sandbox. Let some time pass. Then, slowly and I mean SLOWLY return to working on templates and modules. If you need help, reach out but make sure you are listening. Two of the editors you picked a fight with a few days ago are a few of the most senior editors with templates. Particularly Frietjes who is in a league of her own. Bottom line my friend, you rubbed a number of people the wrong way and gave yourself a bit of a reputation. Now that is nothing that cannot be mended (my first couple of YEARS on Wikipedia I was pissing people off left and right)! But you need to focus on making sure you move forward properly. I'm taking the time to give you a detailed response because I think your heart is in the right place and you could be an awesome contributor to Wikipedia. That being said, I will assure you that none of us will be very forgiving of repeated transgressions. I won't speak for anyone else, but from my point of view, if you resume your previous behavior and attitude, you will be 100% on your own. I'll have no interest in working with you or helping you out. Show a little good faith by helping out with some of the WP:BACKLOG. Consider it a penance if you want. Anyway, just my 2 cents. @Shaheba Sultana: You have to wait until google's web crawler sees the article. This may take a few week or even just a few hours. Normally Wikipedia articles are put on the first page and in many cases the first spot. All you have to do is wait. Until then I recommend that you cut down on the amount of external links, so the warning can be removed and you expand the article a little more, by ME or another editor, as you have been warned sever times not to remove it on your talk page. Small mistake on {{spellnum}}

Hi Brandon:

With this edit, you introduced a small error to the template: there is a line break after the </noinclude> tag that ends up as part of the template output. This shows up in particular when the output is used inside a table. You almost certainly already know this, but when you add a noinclude section to a template, make sure there is nothing, not even a line break, that gets added to the visible output. It's unfortunate that MediaWiki won't ignore such a line break, since it would be helpful to make the template code easier to read, but that's the way it is at present. —swpb^{T go beyond} 17:37, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Please stop making modules and templates, as you already agreed to. Take some time to familiarise yourself with the encyclopaedia, working on other things, whether making new articles, improving existing ones or dealing with backlogs of editing tasks. Once you know your way around the encyclopaedia you will have a much better handle on what templates exist, and so be better able to spot opportunities for improvement in them. It's not just creating unnecessary templates that's the issue; you've been disruptive in multiple areas recently. When you create a pointless template, it wastes time because it has to go through TFD. When you make a dozen edits to a single template or article without a single edit summary you waste the time of the people trying to (quickly) figure out what you're doing. Heck, just the fact that it takes you a quick dozen edits (even though you claim you use the preview option) wastes our time. When you refuse to accept the possibility that what you did with AWB was disruptive and kept doing it, you waste our time. I have spent an inordinate amount of time cleaning up after you, and so obviously I'm heavily involved, but you just don't seem to get that almost everything you've done is disruptive.

Now, in fairness, the overall result of some of your work has been useful - you haven't been a complete net negative. It's just the way that you edit that I find extremely problematic. Primefac (talk) 20:47, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

@EdJohnston and Primefac: I'm inclined to side with Brandon here. It wasn't ever really made clear that Brandon was not to touch that namespace after the block was lifted. Obviously I defer to you, but I'd recommend reducing this from a month to maybe a few days and making it crystal clear to Brandon to stay out of the Module and Template namespace. Don't even leave comments on the talk pages. This includes documentation pages. Just work on something else. I'm happy to monitor them. If they do it again, block for 6 months. Just my 2 cents. I know, and I didn't necessarily mean to say that you've been entirely disruptive with AWB, but the conversation when you started making mistakes read (to me) like you were trying to carry on editing despite being asked not to. As for edit summaries - I find it highly unlikely that the Preview option in VE doesn't actually allow for adding edit summaries, but I've also never used VE so I wouldn't know. It is hard for me to trust any more voluntary assurances by User:BrandonXLF. Each time we think he now sees the problem, and will stop. But each time he doesn't stop. I would encourage any reviewing admin to check out their 2018 talk page archives. It is full of notices regarding their editing. Granted, they are almost entirely related to edits in the template/module namespaces (mostly "your edit broke things"), but in the last three months that's accounted for somewhere in the neighbourhood of 50-80% of their edits (since it looks like the vast majority of their user-space edits are to their own subpages). @EdJohnston and Primefac: I agree with a lot of what has been said. The fact that Brandon reapplied for WP:AWB is particularly concerning. I don't really care what you are doing... To apply for that back so soon after a block does demonstrate that you just don't get it. That being said, here is what I would suggest.

1) Brandon withdraws all request for use of WP:AWB and has all extra rights removed (no rollback, no autoconfirmed, etc).

2) Brandon agrees not to touch the Template or Module spaces again, for any reason, INCLUDING talk pages, for a period of AT LEAST 2 months (start of 2019). You see a problem or want something fixed, post on my talk page.

3) Brandon agrees to spend the next two weeks working on the backlog. I actually pinged him earlier today about collaborating on some backlog cleanup and he expressed interest. This is not glorious stuff... It is cleaning up of maintenance categories that are in the backlog. Stuff no one likes doing but that needs to be done. I'd consider this a bit of penance and might actually help him learn.

4) Brandon agrees that if he violates this agreement, in its finalized form, that he will be blocked for 6 months and there won't be any discussion about it.

I'd like to keep rollback and auto confirm so I can use huggle, I have to do some kind of editing. There's many template and module I created that I want to work on (such as Module:Jcon and Module:Outdent), I can restrict these edits to your talkpage as you said, but I'd need to use their sanboxes to make the edits drafts and documentations to update usage after the edit is done. I'd also like to be able to add TfD notices to templates. I feel like a lot of the backlog can be fixed with regex and AWB, but doing it manually is fine. The last part seems a little harsh, it should depend how what I do. Part 3 seams fine. For part 1, I'll withdraw the request. For part 2 I feel like that needs a lot of refining. • Hi BrandonXLF, I'm Kevin. I've spent some time reviewing this, and I have a hunch that you're understanding that the community has concerns with your edits a bit better now. I can tell you're invested in Wikipedia and want to improve this encyclopedia, so (if Primefac agrees) let's try to work something out here. For a while (that is, until you've convinced an administrator like me or Primefac that issues won't recur), you agree not to edit template/module pages, and you agree to refrain from using automated tools like AWB. Huggle, that's fine, I'm not seeing immediate issues there (unless someone else disagrees). I'm also personally inclined to let you edit template sandboxes and talk pages, but I hope you'll be judicious (don't focus on templates/modules!!) and my strongest recommendation is that you turn your attention somewhere else for now – article content work, or perhaps recent changes patrol if you must. Also, you really need to include edit summaries – make it a habit for every edit. I often use VE when doing article work; you can definitely include summaries. If you find yourself forgetting to include summaries, it's probably a sign you're editing too fast and not putting enough thought into each edit. For example, two weeks ago, you made about 30 edits on Template:ON former/testcases in about 23 minutes. There's no real reason to be editing that fast, and especially when you're editing the same page a whole bunch of times in a row – use previews! Anyway, if those conditions are acceptable to you, I will ask Primefac if they agree to an unblock here. (To be absolutely clear, these agreements will be binding and violations will lead to swift blocks – the community needs to be able to trust what you say.) Kevin, Thank you for reviewing this, I 100% accept and agree with these conditions as they seem very reasonable. I will refrain from the template and module spaces for a while as you said. Being able to edit the sandboxes and talk pages of the spaces would be really appreciated. I will work on including edit summaries and use previews, It's completely my fault I'm not, but what I'm saying is the software doesn't force (or push) you too do so (in my opinion). I'll stay away from automated tools for a while as you recommended. I will not be focusing on templates and modules, but if you allow me to edit sandboxes can I also edit testcases to test my edits? @L235: Thanks for reviewing the whole situation. Nice to have someone with a fresh set of eyes looking at it. I've been on both sides of this, both supporting a block and very vocal about lifting the block. I've also offered on multiple occasions to be helpful to Brandon. The one thing I will say is that I feel very strongly Brandon should stay out of the template and module namespaces 100% for a period of time after the block is lifted. The fact that they continue to try to find ways to edit sandboxes or test cases demonstrates (at least to me) a lack of getting it. Their continued ok well no templates, but what about template sandboxes? No sandboxes, ok, well can I still update the documentation? There is so much work to be done that doesn't involve templates or modules, areas where he has demonstrated time and time again that he just causes problems. So I would support immediately lifting the block but under the condition that there is a complete ban on any edits in the Template or Module namespace until such time as an admin says otherwise. To me this includes sandbox, documentation, testcase, talk, ANY page that starts with "Template" or "Module". Just work on something else for a while.

• No editing in the Template and Module namespaces (10 and 828) for 6 months, with the exception of the sandbox/testcases.
• An attempt will be made to use edit summaries whenever possible.
• An attempt will be made to limit the edit rate per page (as mentioned, 23 edits in 23 minutes on a single page is a bit much) by using the Preview option more judiciously
• A failure to hold with the final two points (assuming multiple warnings are left) will be considered disruptive editing.

@Primefac: That's seams basically fine, but Kevin was also saying he's is inclined to let me edit the template/module sandboxes and talk pages, of course the talk pages aren't in namespaces 10 and 828, but the sandboxes are. I just want to voice that I'm still concerned that once this block is lifted, we are going to see Brandon doing nothing but editing Template Sandboxes and testcases. I truly hope that I am wrong. I am both willing and eager to be proven wrong here! But I want to make sure that the admins here keep an eye on the edits once the block is lifted. I could see Brandon very easily failing into the same pattern of disruptive behavior with editing of Sandboxes. Brandon, please keep in mind that a sandbox doesn't mean that the template is not used elsewhere. Yes, the sandbox is for testing, but breaking the sandbox can have consequences elsewhere. I strongly urge you to avoid template editing for a while. I AM NOT an admin so I can't tell you what to do... But I have offered to help you and tutor you on multiple occasions. I can tell you right now that if your block is lifted and the first thing you do is make 500 edits to testcases and sandboxes, this is going to signal WP:NOTGETTINGIT loud and clear. You won't be in violation of you restrictions and won't be banned based on what has been said above, but it will demonstrate to people like me who were and are happy to help you, that you just don't get it. If and when your ban is lifted, please realize that you are going to under a microscope for a while. Think twice before clicking save each time. You should not have closed your own move proposal for Queen Street (Toronto). This is a violation of the rules at Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions#Who can close requested moves. You have a clear conflict of interest in the outcome of that discussion. The request was barely open for a day before you closed it; it should have been allowed to run for a full seven days. Then there's the issue that it wasn't really a move but a copy-paste or merge, and there are separate templates for proposing merges. I'll actually expand a bit upon what Wbm1058 is saying - in addition to closing your own RM, you did a bunch of copy/paste page moves (see the section below for my feelings on that particular issue) as well as merging the talk pages, something that should almost never be done. There are very specific circumstances for that sort of thing, and this was not it. You cannot, should not, just... stop doing them. Copy/paste page moves are 99.999% of the time not appropriate. Request a histmerge, ask for a page swap/technical merge, G6, whatever, but STOP DOING MOVES BY COPY/PASTE. Edit protected requests for templates

I'm working on converting {{Chembox}} to use {{Infobox}} as a base. Take a look at {{Infobox chemical}}. I'm looking for feedback. What issues do you see? There there are MANY of them as this is still a WIP... But I need a second set of eyes. Additionally, if you want to start creating test cases that would be super helpful. The test cases need to compare {{chembox}} to {{Infobox chemical}}. I have a generic testcase that assumes every possible value is being supplied, but need to have test cases for some of the logic. No rush, but a second set of eyes would be great. Right now, don't waste time on documentation. That will come later. Also please remember that your restrictions are still in place. I welcome your feedback, but please confine your edits to the testcases. If you see something in the template that needs to be changed, let me know and I'll get right on it. The if statement is not needed can can be replaced with {{{Name|{{PAGENAME}}}}}. I was also wondering if I can edit the Usage section of the documentation as some of the description of the parameters don't align with the parameter, making it confusing to read and understand (this is apparent at the end of Medium form and throughout Full form.
