Fair use rationale for Image:Dospekhi.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Dospekhi.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Image Tagging for Image:Sie12.PNG

Thanks for uploading Image:Sie12.PNG. However, the copyright tag you've used is deprecated or obsolete, and should not be used. This could be because the tag is inaccurate or misleading, or because it does not adequately specify the copyright status of the image. For a list of copyright tags that are in current use, see the "Public domain", "Free license", and "Fair use" sections of Wikipedia:Image copyright tags.

Image Tagging Image:Babek.jpg

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Babek.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jkelly 19:49, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Hickman's potentilla

thank you for your interest in this article. i didnt expect it to be nominated for featured article so i did not originally do the exhaustive research. ive now visited most every nook and cranny and have expanded the article by about 60 percent. i hope you will revisit the article and let me know what you think. i am open to any ideas for expansion or improvement. it is a very rare plant with only two certain colonies at this point so there is not much info. no one ever published on it between its discovery in 1900 and monterey rediscovery of 1992. thanks Covalent 03:19, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Barsa-Kelmes

Привет! Если быть точне, то это название переводится буквально не как "земля откуда нет возврата", а "если пойдёшь-не придёшь". уж больно "the land of no return" далеко от оригинала ушло.

И такой ещё вопрос. Куда нужно оставлять свои мессажи, чтобы написанная статья участвовала в "Did you know?" --Untifler 11:34, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

--Untifler 11:28, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Например если ты закончил статью, вставляешь ее под текущей датой на самый верх. На будущее обсуждаются сегодняшние, вчерашние и вообще статьи созданные за 5 дней. --Brand спойт 11:40, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Image:LegIIAvgvsta.jpg

Why should "Image:LegIIAvgvsta.jpg" be fair use?--Panairjdde 12:59, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

I found no evidences for public domain. Apparently it's copyrighted. --Brand спойт 13:48, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Right. So why are you claiming that putting such image in Legio II Augusta article is "fair use"?--Panairjdde 13:54, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Because it's apparently copyrighted by 2006 Arts of Fairies, Inc. as indicated below. --Brand спойт 13:56, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Again right. So why are you claiming that using a copyrighted image in the way you use it is a "fair use"? fair use in Wikipedia means that the image is:
"* Cover art. Cover art from various items, for identification and critical commentary (not for identification without critical commentary).
  • Team and corporate logos. For identification. See Wikipedia:Logos.
  • Stamps and currency. For identification.
  • Other promotional material. Posters, programs, billboards, ads. For critical commentary.
  • Film and television screen shots. For critical commentary and discussion of the cinema and television.
  • Screenshots from software products. For critical commentary.
  • Paintings and other works of visual art. For critical commentary, including images illustrative of a particular technique or school.
  • Publicity photos. For identification and critical commentary. See Wikipedia:Publicity photos.
Under which of these cases your use of said image falls?--Panairjdde 19:07, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
The tag clearly says: "this image is of a drawing, painting, print, or other two-dimensional work of art". Thus the fair use falls under paintings and other works of visual art. --Brand спойт 11:41, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Question on Laskarid eagle.jpg

Hi Brandmeister!

Just wanted to ask if you could supply more information about the image of the Laskarid Eagle that you added to Wikipedia. You don't say where you found the image. To me, it doesn't look like something that was actually created in the 13th century, but rather a later copy or reconstruction. Could you tell me a little about the source? --Jfruh (talk) 19:30, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

I found it at http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/Medieval/Byzantine.html which claims it to be of the Laskaris. However the inscription in the seal designates that the seal also belonged to Comnenes and Paleologs. --Brand спойт 20:09, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:Bak ca.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Bak ca.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). The font size has reduced on the whole. Is it only in my browser? I once changed the size in preferences but it was perhaps Mozilla. Now I can't find such a thing. --Brand спойт 10:37, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

It's your browser. In IE, hold down the control key and move the scroll wheel on your mouse an you can change this (I think it takes affect when you release the control button). There are other ways to set this, but that is how I usually accidentally change this, to my confusion. RJFJR 16:54, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Style for company names

I see you're editing Pornography in the United States: I notice that company names are being put in quotes in that article: company names should simply be plain text, without quotes or other formatting applied. For example: Vivid Entertainment, not "Vivid Entertainment". -- The Anome 18:47, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your edits on the U.S. pornography article: I agree, it should be possible to start on the Featured Article process soon. More on company names: we should make a distinction between companies and the product they are famous for, and not use the terms synonymously: for example, Playboy (the magazine) is published by Playboy Enterprises, Inc. (the company). The same is true of several other enterprises mentioned in the article.

A quick summary of styles for things (see WP:MOS for more)

  • Companies in plain text: Playboy Enterprises, Inc.
  • Ordinary brand and product names in plain text: Coca Cola, Post-it note
  • Books, movies, magazines, record albums in italics: A Tale of Two Cities, The Matrix, Playboy, Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
  • Short stories and individual songs in quotes: "The Telltale Heart", "Hey Jude"

Fair use rationale for Image:Rome rulez.jpg

  This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Rome rulez.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In the image description page you have written:
  • PD-because|unless stated otherwise, all Maria Sharapova pictures according to source are believed to be in the public domain as either promotional stills, publicity photos, photoshoot rejects or press media stock
I don't think the source can be trusted in this regard. (However I can't check what they say because you didn't provide a valid URL). Promotional stills, etc, are not public domain. At best they sometimes can be used under the fair use exemption. -Will Beback 22:21, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I was looking at a different listing of the URL. In any case, their word isn't definitive. So far as the U.S. copyright law, and Wikipedia policy are concerned, pubicity still are not automatically public domain. There isn't even evidence that this image is a publicity still. -Will Beback 22:48, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
I suggest you re-tag the image {Promophoto}. It may not be 100% accurate (since we don't know if the image is really promotional) but it is far closer to the actual situation. -Will Beback 22:56, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Promophoto and the like should only be used for images explicitly released as such. Given the site's message, it seems much more likely that it was scanned from a magazine. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 00:07, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

On October 27, 2006, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Gilbert Johnson, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Mike Jackson

Hi. I wonder if the person appeared in "South Park's" "The Jeffersons" is not Michael Jackson then who it is? :) If it's Mike, then I think it's worth of inserting to the article --Brand спойт 02:02, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

It is not a real person, it is a cartoon made on a computer. The actual voice is not him either, and is displayed no doubt in the credits.--I'll bring the food 02:17, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
And what is going on with your talk page? it has hundreds of image complaints. --I'll bring the food 02:19, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
