Minor fixes to userscripts
Hey Brad, it looks like you've got some user scripts using bare javascript global wg-style variables. These are phab:T72470 deprecated, and while I don't think there's a timeline for their removal, it's been that way for a while. It's usually a straightforward fix, all uses need to use mw.config.get, such as converting wgTitle to mw.config.get('wgTitle'). There's some more info at mw:ResourceLoader/Migration guide (users)#Global wg variables. I can take care of cleaning them up for you if you like, just let me know!

- Guerillero, I might not be familiar with the extent of the problem, but I do see that Mclarenfan17 has been indeffed. If they get caught socking at least three times they're de facto site banned anyway per WP:3X, which would make a formal site ban redundant. Technical news
- When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
- When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
- There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

- By motion, the discretionary sanctions originally authorized under the GamerGate case are now authorized under a new Gender and sexuality case, with sanctions
authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, any gender-related dispute or controversy and associated people.

Over at the help desk, an IP asked for their company's page to be reinstated into the article space. I told them that they'd need to go to WP:Refund, but I'm not sure where to go from there. Possibly stale page restriction
Hi, I was recently doing a review of all the page restrictions I've placed or taken ownership of over the years, and I noticed that a majority of the pages were no longer battlegrounds and didn't require restrictions anymore. I was looking backwards a couple of months on the article history and talk page looking for major diputes, and for the most part things were pretty quiet. I've removed the BRD restrictions from about 70% of the articles that I had put them on, and the 1RR restrictions from probably 90% of pages.
I figured while I was at it I might as well try to track down the other pages with active sanctions and see if the admins who placed them might also be interested in doing a similar review. Here's what I found for you: Template:Editnotices/Page/Hunter Biden - Talk:Hunter Biden

I agree, if we lived in a perfect world, but we don't. Please watch this interview with Ted Koppel. He speaks directly to what WP editors should be aware of and what we should be considering when presenting articles with objectivity and a fair balanced POV. The problems arise because 6 corporations control 90% of the media in the US. They actually do reflect a POV and ideologic bias, and we cannot simply ignore that fact because we are an encyclopedia, not news. The primary concern of news media is to appease their demographics so they can sell advertising and be profitable, and that is a simple fact of business. They use clickbait to attract readers - in the old days it was referred to as sensationalism to sell papers. The biggest change is the interspersing of opinion with actual journalism, and the increased competition. Ted Koppel laid it all out for all of us quite eloquently. Atsme 💬 📧 12:08, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- Atsme, that is a very insightful interview. I think Koppel's analysis is pretty accurate as to the state of US journalism (he certainly predicted the events following the election quite accurately). Koppel doesn't seem troubled by the fact that the majority of the media is owned by just a few companies (when it comes to national news that's nothing new), but he is very troubled by the fact that reporters are increasingly being known for their opinions and analysis rather than their reporting of the facts. He is also troubled by the Internet having democratised media such that it no longer requires an education and an employment contract with a reputable organisation in order to have one's writings widely read. I agree that these are both problems, but they don't mean at all that we should weaken our dependence on quality journalism. On the contrary, we must insist, now more than ever, on quality journalism. We must write our articles based on the consensus of sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy, independent of any particular point of view. Analysis, opinion pages, sensationalism, and clickbait are all best avoided as sources for our articles, no matter how integrated these matters are with the actual journalism. After all, if the media is not going to give people just the facts and let people draw their own conclusions, then perhaps it falls on us to do that work for them. Thoughts
Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on this thread (which was removed in the next edit)? You, Anarchyte, and Schwede66 are some of the regular AP patrollers so I figured you'd collectively have a good head for whether this is enough of a problem to merit removal, or if more discussion at some place like ANI would be appropriate. My main concern here is a lack of accountability (why would they choose not to answer a fairly straight-forward question?) for someone who is creating articles that are outwith the normal patrolling scheme. For disclosure, I was asked to look into this, but I do agree with their concerns. Primefac (talk) 13:28, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- Primefac, I'm not sure I'm a regular at AP yet – I just reviewed a few requests a few days ago and hopefully provided some useful feedback. On the issue at hand, autopatrolled is a discretionary perm, so I wouldn't be shy about removing it if you feel that their articles should be going through NPP. Judging by that conversation, and a handful of questionable articles I found in their deleted contributions, I think that course of action is perfectly reasonable. – bradv🍁 16:19, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Primefac: I don't usually patrol the AP board as much as others because I like to leave those requests to people that focus on article creation, but I've always held the opinion that if there's even a shred of doubt as to whether someone should have autopatrolled, it best to not grant/remove it. Compared to articles made by people without autopatrolled, there's almost no immediate accountability. Articles can sit in limbo for months before someone notices mistakes. I've not had the time to review their work yet, but like bradv, if you're considering removing it, you're probably right. Anarchyte (talk) 16:28, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Primefac, brad, Anarchyte. I am here after the removal of autopatrolled right. I accept it was a blunder to confuse two people, but I did correct my mistake (this was my only bad edit in six years and I have reflected on that and promise to keep up my record). The removal was too rapid, one warning and then removal. It is not fair for someone who works so hard at AfD just to remove bad articles and has long complied with Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Is it possible if anyone of you may please review my article creations and share their comments? If the reviewer will agree with this decision. I will accept that. Thanks. - When I review for AP, I don't just look at articles created, but I visit a user's talk page; it's often the first thing I do. You learn a lot about an editor's conduct; how are they reacting to feedback or problems raised? I also look at the talk page history tab; are there threads that get removed? For me, it's a red flag when users don't archive their talk page; are they just lazy or are they hiding content that is uncomfortable? It generally means that I have to invest more time to come to a positive conclusion. I agree that it's simply not acceptable for an editor refusing to answer a reasonable question about their contributions. It won't break Wikipedia if there's a bit more patrolling that will need to be done. The editor can always come forward and ask to get AP back. Should I be the one reviewing the case, I'd be more inclined to sign this off if I see a talk page archive going forward. Schwede66 18:43, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks Schwede66. I have to acknowledge this gives a really bad impression and just wastes everybody's time (I have been awarded barnstars which are also lying there). I can only repent and learn from my past mistakes. I commit here that I am willing to spend hours to create the talk page archive (all way back to my start in 2015) and promise that I will diligently archive the talk page going forward. Belinda Peregrín
You just declined a request to protect Belinda Peregrín claiming it was a content dispute. It is not a content dispute as every IP editor that is modifying the DOB is a different, unrelated editor who has no idea of the BLP policy. As per this Village pump link, there is "a consensus to include all birth dates for which a reliable source exists, noting discrepancies". There is no way to determine her DOB without violating the WP:DOB sub policy and IPs will continue changing the DOB to one or another regardless of the consensus that may exist. Technical news
- Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.
Arbitration
- After a Clarification request, the Arbitration Committee modified Remedy 5 of the Antisemitism in Poland case. This means sourcing expectations are a discretionary sanction instead of being present on all articles. It also details using the talk page or the Reliable Sources Noticeboard to discuss disputed sources.
Regarding Pahonia's case
Hello, thanks for your opinion at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case#Pahonia. I provided arguments here: User talk:RandomCanadian#Regarding Pahonia's case why RfC would not solve this dispute because this article is mostly supported by users with nationalistic anti-Lithuanian POV. This report: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive332#Nationalistic vandalism, pushing of the Belarusian propaganda to the article of Pahonia proved that they will rather try to prove that black is white instead of simply admitting that white is white. Their only aim is to attempt to create misunderstanding in a simple problem. The case is simple: some nationalists attempts to prove that their language is superior, and this way violates WP:NPOV. This dispute should be solved by neutral arbiters with limiting of words in statements because otherwise neutral users will once again "drown" in the war of random arguments. I included these three clear quotes from Britannica for a reason. If a similar procedure is offered by Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement, then maybe it should be moved there. DS (AE, strictly) Unfairness
Hi Bradv,
You are correct both that it is a more general inherent aspect of DS, and that a talk page would be better. Unfortunately, this motion has been subsummed into the case request meaning that the case request statements are needing to run double-duty, which is not ideal.
DS places a double burden on any appeal through AE (which though not the sole appeal route of DS, is the route that it (and all the templates, particularly) shunt anyone who doesn't know the system well towards) in the form of setting clear error by the admin for the standard to consider overturning and needing a clear consensus of uninvolved administrators holding that view to overturn. Either of those would be too much, between them they impose a near-impossible appeal standard to reach. The former, at a minimum, doesn't hold in AN-held GS appeals, and so inherently turns anyone who has had a sanction converted to almost certainly having a harder time appealing that would have been the case.

- @Nosebagbear, thanks for your explanation, but I'm still not sure I understand. Sanctions imposed under DS can be appealed at AN just the same as sanctions imposed under GS. The wording for DS says a successful appeal requires "the clear and substantial consensus of ... uninvolved editors at AN", and the wording for GS says that the same rules should apply. So if GS appeals aren't being decided by "uninvolved" editors, then that's a failure of the GS process, not a feature of it. Either way, DS is much more robust, as it adds both AE and ARCA as options. So any editor who feels that their appeal is not getting a fair review is also able to appeal that sanction at ARCA (or by email to the committee if blocked), where it will be decided by uninvolved arbitrators. - Sorry, but there was already an AfD which resulted in a consensus to keep the article, so we would need a new AfD in order to delete it. - No, you have customized the timestamp by placing it before the sig. That's a problem, as it breaks the WMF-supplied tools as well as archiving bots, and it hampers communication with others. - As for the redirect, it obviously wouldn't be found in a WP:RS, but Wikipedia has redirects for terms found in other types of sources. Such as U$C, or UNC-Raleigh. Similar to how U$C would be used as a satiric reference to USC, McAfee didn't Epstein himself is found such as at redbubble com/i/sticker/McAfee-didn-t-Epstein-himself-by-Borg219467/80995706.EJUG5, 9gag com/gag/arM8zXX, etc [The WP blacklist prevents me from listing the exact links]. As has been explained to me during redirect discussions at RfD, the idea of redirects such as McAfee didn't kill himself or McAfee didn't Epstein himself, is that if someone noticed that reference somewhere (even if on a shirt or in a meme) and they searched for it on Wikipedia, they should be directed to the relevant information.

- Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
- An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.
Technical news
- IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

- The community authorised COVID-19 general sanctions have been superseded by the COVID-19 discretionary sanctions following a motion at a case request. Alerts given and sanctions placed under the community authorised general sanctions are now considered alerts for and sanctions under the new discretionary sanctions.

- Oh absolutely. I don't think any RfA candidate should have to endure 55 questions about everything that's wrong with Wikipedia and the world. But there are some similarities, specifically involving the community getting to know and trust the candidate. And for that, the question period is the best opportunity, and how the candidate responds to even the dumbest questions can be an important gauge of how they think and how they'll interact with others in their role.
