Bot goof

Bot1058 made this edit, removing a redirect from the talk page of a page that had been changed from a redirect to a disambiguation page, added a disambiguation template, and made a mess of it. Largoplazo (talk) 19:23, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

Replied at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2018 January 21#Talk:FHSH. – wbm1058 (talk) 21:20, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
Since Category:Unsynchronized disambiguation talk pages is populated by Module:Redirect#IsRedirect, that page shouldn't have been in the category. It's not a redirect if #REDIRECT isn't at the top of the page. Just for the record, the bot's console report is shown below. – wbm1058 (talk) 21:38, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Hmm, HERE the bot created a page for the first time. Obviously a side effect of my conversion from AWB to PHP. Although this is mostly a benign edit, I suppose I should patch it so that it doesn't create pages. I can't just assume that pages populating the category actually still belong in the category. This one would have been removed with a null edit to the disambiguation page after its talk page was deleted. – wbm1058 (talk) 14:35, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

OK, I patched it to make sure the contents of the page begin with #REDIRECT, i.e. the bot makes sure that the redirect really is a redirect. This should take care of both of the scenarios reported above. wbm1058 (talk) 17:56, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Your recent edits

Hello, I'm 60.141.62.16. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to Talk:Wacky Races (video game) have been undone because they did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Help Desk. Thanks. 60.141.62.16 (talk) 09:59, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Thanks, I see that the bot's been edit warring. I'll investigate and fix that. – wbm1058 (talk) 11:05, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
Problems started after this 8 July 2018 edit changed the target of the Wacky Races (video game) redirect. wbm1058 (talk) 11:43, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
Bot1058 then synced the unsynchronized disambiguation talk page redirect. Since the incomplete-dab Wacky Races (video game) redirects to the Wacky Races set-index, then its talk page Talk:Wacky Races (video game) should redirect to Talk:Wacky Races. The problem is that Talk:Wacky Races is a redirect; thus the edit warring with the double-redirect fixing bot. Ordinarily Template:Disambiguation or a similar template would prevent this from happening, by putting Wacky Races into Category:Unsynchronized disambiguation talk pages (which Bot1058 also clears). However in this case, Wacky Races is a set index. I think the solution is to make Template:Set index article populate Category:Unsynchronized disambiguation talk pages. – wbm1058 (talk) 12:16, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
Fixed – if no problems with my solution arise within the next few days, I'll make this fix in other set index templates. wbm1058 (talk) 15:39, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Talk:Rainald

FYI: Per WPDAB guidelines, dab talk pages are not tagged with {{WPDAB}} is there is no talk in the talk page. Staszek Lem (talk) 23:22, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

Also, per Talk:Tichy (surname), talk pages for names and surnames are tagged with {{WPAnthroponymy}}, not with WPDAB. Staszek Lem (talk) 23:30, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

I went back and manually fixed all the pages that the bot erroneously tagged by replacing {{WikiProject Disambiguation}} with {{WikiProject Anthroponymy}}, and enhanced the bot to do this in the future. My test worked on the first attempt. Note that the bot doesn't create talk pages; it just replaces unsynchronized talk redirects with WikiProject templates. – wbm1058 (talk) 19:43, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

Issue with incorrectly transcluded templates

I'm not an expert on this sort of thing, but I couldn't help but notice that a significant portion of the pages in Category:Pages with incorrectly transcluded templates are a result of this bot's Task 4 edits. Is there something that could be done to fix this? - Jadebenn (talk) 08:01, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi Jadebenn, I noticed this a week or few ago and ran a script that made null edits which mostly cleared the category. Theoretically I shouldn't need to do this, as there is supposedly a process running in the background that should be cleaning up issues like this. But I'm not an expert on that sort of thing ;) – I suppose I could make my bot null-edit every page in this category every time it runs. The two remaining talk pages in this category are both for redirects that are up at WP:Redirects for discussion at the moment. – wbm1058 (talk) 12:56, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. That clears up why one of the pages disappeared after I (accidentally) did a null edit. I didn't even know that's what it was called until now! - Jadebenn (talk) 17:49, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
Fixed as of August 30, 2019, bot version 3.21 makes null edits to clear Category:Pages with incorrectly transcluded templateswbm1058 (talk) 23:41, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Weird edits

What's with edits like this one that redirect to wrong page? Dicklyon (talk) 06:02, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

@Dicklyon: Motor Torpedo Boat PT-34 redirects to Patrol torpedo boat PT-658. The bot endeavors to synchronize talk redirects so that they target the same title as the article redirect.
When you edited the page, you made that page populate the hidden maintenance category Category:Unsynchronized talk page redirects, which the bot endeavors to clear.
I suppose I should do a better job of monitoring reversions to the bot's edits. I see them when I log into the bot account, but I don't do that very often.
Anyhow, with the current version of the bot, it will edit-war until the underlying issue is corrected.
So in this case, the question is, why did Steven Crossin make this edit? wbm1058 (talk) 14:33, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
That's my bad! I closed an RM and attempted to fix some of the double redirects rather than rely on the bot, but must have pasted one incorrectly. Sorry all. Steven Crossin Help resolve disputes! 14:39, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
Ping @Steven Crossin: there were a couple more of those PT boats that I was reverting this bot on; can you check and fix? See my contribs if you need help finding them. Dicklyon (talk) 14:43, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
@Dicklyon:, thanks, I have fixed them all up. Not sure how I screwed up there. I am very embarrassed. Steven Crossin Help resolve disputes! 15:04, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

Talk:Rainbow (band)

Greetings, I believe the bot made this edit in error. Back in 2013 Talk:Rainbow (band) was moved to Talk:Rainbow (rock band) but they didn't leave a redirect (diff). I created one yesterday, as there are a few extant links to the old page. The bot changed the redirect to a disambig. page. (I've since gone back and changed the link.) Thanks, -- Gyrofrog (talk) 20:21, 17 November 2019 (UTC)

We generally try to keep up with extant links to article (mainspace) pages, but rarely links from talk pages. wbm1058 (talk) 03:55, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
Just clarifying before I archive this. Per Talk:Rainbow (rock band)#Requested Move the existence of Rainbow (South Korean band) makes Rainbow (band) ambiguous, which is why they didn't leave a redirect. The bot's edit was correct. – wbm1058 (talk) 02:25, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

Use edit summary on Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests/Permalink

On Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests/Permalink, the edits currently do not have edit summaries. The bot should be updated to use "Task 7: Updating permalink" as the edit summary for future edits to Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests/Permalink, seeing that other edits include the task number in the edit summary. GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 19:24, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

  Done in task 7 version 1.1 (on 31 July 2020) – wbm1058 (talk) 16:49, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

Bot1058 recreating deleted page

Hi, Bot1058 recreated Talk:Melbourne Wireless earlier today with a blank page, shortly after it was G8 deleted follwing a successful AFD for the article. I can't see any reason it would do this but since the bot hasn't malfunctioned in its other recent edits I thought I'd let you know here instead of stopping it. Thanks. Triptothecottage (talk) 12:41, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Bot was making "secret" null edits (nobody except maybe systems guys on the backend should notice null edits) and oops, one of those null edits turned out to be not null (edit conflict) wbm1058 (talk) 13:13, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
I corrected botclasses' "purge" module to make a POST request on 12 October 2021, and now use that module to make "null edits" so that this issue won't happen again. Purging the cache of the page is the right way for bots to make null edits. – wbm1058 (talk) 23:29, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Talk:Basarabka and Moldovanka

So I deleted this page per WP:G8 a couple days ago when I closed Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2021_October_1#Basarabka_and_Moldovanka. The bot then recreated the talk page (since been G8'd again). Any idea why the bot did this? I can't think of a reason as to why that would be desirable. Hog Farm Talk 23:29, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

It also appears to have done the same thing with Talk:Rajmata Smt. Devendra Kumari Singhdeo Government Medical College, Ambikapur. Both of those examples are recent, but the bot has done similar things in the past (see Talk:Chalaak) from July. It's also creating a bunch of useless redirect talk pages like Talk:Dave Burns. I don't see why the bot should be recreating properly deleted talk pages or just creating blank ones. If this continues, I will be blocking the bot from editing pages in the talk namespace. Hog Farm Talk 23:38, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

I've also posted this at Wikipedia:Bots/Noticeboard. Hog Farm Talk 23:43, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Fixed in Tasks 3–4–5 version 3.50 which uses the updated botclasses.php – more details on the noticeboardwbm1058 (talk) 20:17, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

Talk:Junction Road

I had converted Junction Road into a disambiguation page just recently. The bot did not convert the talk page of the Junction Road page from a redirect to a disambiguation talk page. Aravindhan Ravikumar (talk) 14:48, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

Sorry, I took my bot down due to issues raised in the previous section. The bot was created to make these edits to clean up after human editors who failed to make them themselves, and now I see that the bot is expected to make these edits as a convenience to those editors, ha! OK, I'll bring the bot back up, with the caveat that I still haven't made the required patch demanded in the previous section. – wbm1058 (talk) 15:02, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
...and now the bot has made that edit to Talk:Junction Road. – wbm1058 (talk) 15:06, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

Pages created

I see that task 4 occasionally creates redirects. Mostly benign, I suppose. – wbm1058 (talk) 13:25, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

I think this has been fixed by bot v 3.53 – will check back occasionally to see whether the bot has created any pages after today. – wbm1058 (talk) 18:49, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
Hmm, task 4 is still creating pages:
So, not fixed yet. – wbm1058 (talk) 14:02, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
