AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CORPORATES TO COMPLY WITH SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The novel coronavirus has infected mostly the whole nations and the progress of its devasting nature is still continuing. The pandemic has not only affected the human lives and well-being but also greatly triggered badly to economic, social and business environments. The future outcome of such havoc is still unpredictable, but it would be better to take some remedial measures in advance to overcome such dreadful events. Even the developed nations are disquiet and workup to tackle the disastrous virus, our nation is fighting against this widespread ravaging virus by adopting eloquent and satisfactory policies. It is undebatable that health and life must be in first priority rather than business and industry and on the other hand, once we survived and life begins as normal some issues must be addressed such as standard of living, employments issues, socio-cultural relation among nations, decline in tourism industry, environmental impact, digitalization in every fields, More allocation of funds by government on scientific research and development, stronger supply chain mechanism etc According to section 135 of companies Act 2013 with relevant rules and regulations, Every company having net profit of Rs.5 crore or more or Net worth of Rs.500 crore or more or Turnover of Rs.1000 crore</ref></ref> or more during the immediately preceding financial year has to make CSR expenditure by formulating CSR committee and shall spend atleast 2% of their average net profit of three years to any fund specified in schedule VII of companies Act. Recently government has set up PM CARES fund to provide relief to those affected by any emergency or distress situation. Accordingly, it is clarified that any contribution to the PM CARES fund shall qualify as CSR expenditure with additional CSR being offset in subsequent years under Companies Act 2013. Moreover, than legal compliance, it’s an ethical code of conduct which can be widely practiced by corporates irrespective of mandatory requirement for the benefit of the whole of the society. CSR shall not be considered as a merely expenditure, it’s a business investment in areas of education, health, poverty etc. as a part of their lawful compliance and socio-economic-ethical responsibilities. Amid of COVID-19 outbreak, Ministry of corporate affairs has notified that companies expenditure to fight the pandemic will be considered as valid under CSR activities. The most effective CSR plans ensure that while companies comply with laws, their investments also respect the growth and development of marginalized communities and the environment and also helps the companies to regain the power granted by the society by creating a good reputation. CSR should also be sustainable – involving activities that a corporate can uphold without negatively affecting their business goals. Merely profit motive is not an object of every corporates, their visions and missions were inseparable with their responsibility towards the society. Every business man should act as a trust of the society, whatever he gains finally belongs to them. Most of the common man were curious and worried about these unexpected extraordinary situations. Once the lockdown is lifted entirely throughout the nation, the second stage of difficulty may arise in job and livelihood, business, trade and professions. Every disaster will teach us an important lesson of foresight and vigilant planning. The corporates in India are carrying their business in diversified areas from simple soap making industries to rocket making giants. Here the question may arise, what can perform by those companies for betterment of nation in present unpleasant scenarios. Each company is unique with their business model, strategies & planning, research & development, technological advancement and expertise. Growing industries in India such as technology, Automotive and healthcare can play a pivotal role in present situation as a part of their social commitment. Some of measure which can be adapted by above companies were. • Technology driven companies which provide ride-hailing services can arrange facilities for emergency medical travelling, transport paramedics and carry equipment’s for administering emergency care and transport patients etc by ensuring safety and health of chauffeurs

• Corporates engaged in healthcare can provide their services especially to old age group by implementing the policies such as free medical check-ups in home, medical consultations in case of emergency situations by connecting directly through local specialised doctors and supplying masks, sanitizers/detergent soaps along with first aid kit.

• Technology company engaged in online education programmes can provide online tutoring for various courses, creating awareness programmes and online activities to the parents to do with their children which will help take care of mental health

• Provide quarantine facilities in affected areas and adequate training to nurses and paramedical staffs

• The companies can provide their warehouses in remote areas for safe storage of essential items including medicines due to transport difficulties which may arise

It’s well to store adequate sufficient quantity of drinking water, because the future danger of contamination of aquifers were not forecasted. The pandemic virus already causes to loss of several thousand of human lives, and infected in animals also reported. It would be an environment catastrophe, if virus threat pure aquifers Present scenario is an ideal situation to develop CSR policies and initiatives and integrating them into their business process. The top executives can set specific policies, strategies and plans and can assign to subordinates as a work in home policy to find out its effective implementation based on well-defined social beliefs or they can coordinate their efforts with NGO working in related fields. We are under a war against disease which can’t be defeat by merely defence power or mechanism. A joint effort by the citizens including corporate citizens and governments and all other stake holders of the society can only bring hope for defeating the common enemy which fight against the nations and humanity.
