Request reason:

Accept reason:

See below. Drmies (talk) 03:28, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

OberMegaTrans, is this so? Can I suggest that you use a more clear way of making these student identifications than the somewhat unclear User:OberMegaTrans/ws2023? Thanks, Drmies (talk) 21:58, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Drmies, all the students of this course are linked on this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:OberMegaTrans/ws2023 or do you need further clarification? Booba taco (talk) 08:24, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I know that, that's why I linked it. I want to hear from User:OberMegaTrans that it's legitimate. Your edits so far don't indicate that you're doing something positive here. Drmies (talk) 13:12, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Drmies, It is indeed legitimate. Our new term and class has just started and one of the first things I ask students to do is to register on Wikipedia and then to put something on their Userpage as a means of introduction. As we continue our work, it will become abundantly clear that they are working sensibly, collaboratively and hopefully helpfully on Wikipedia. I sincerely apologize for any misunderstanding.
On a side-note, things like this, and worse, happen routinely to my students on Wikipedia but in the 17 odd years I've been doing this, I cannot see any particular or clear pattern. Looking back, it actually seems very random and rather arbitrary. It often seems to be one particular Wikipedian who, for whatever reason, has a problem with one of my students (or their work). In over 90% of the cases, we're usually able to clear things up rather quickly. I've decided to use these events as "teaching moments" so I suppose a round of thanks is also in order. :-) OberMegaTrans (talk) 15:22, 9 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Drmies, as you can see, OberMegaTrans has clarified that I belong to this course, and that we are here to translate Wikipedia articles from German to English. I wanted to ask for an update on my unblocking process. It would be really great if I could go back to work on our articles, as I am eager to translate German articles to further help expand English Wikipedia. I would appreciate it, if I could get back to work on the articles and contribute. Booba taco (talk) 21:01, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I missed a ping? Ah no, I see--Uber:OberMegaTrans, it doesn't work unless you sign it at the same time, in the same edit. Sure, I'll get right on it. Drmies (talk) 03:24, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Uber:OberMegaTrans, one more thing: I understand why User:Ad Orientem placed this block: the contributions and the filter log don't indicate anything that says "I'm here to do this project". That's why I suggested you have a more centralized way, or a more clear way, of making your students register. If you'd put something on top of that subpage, like "These are new editors who are doing blah blah blah with me, and if you have any questions please go to my talk page", then the block wouldn't have happened. From my perspective, I've seen situations like these too, and usually they're easily handled, but it's better to prevent them. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 03:28, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Drmies, Thanks for the quick resolution. I forgot to add the ping in my first message so I added it to show my group how it works /should work. My apologies for any inconvenience or misunderstanding.
As to my general comment and your response/suggestion, thank you so much for engaging with the topic! The main reason I wrote about this in the first place was to show my students how communication on Wikipedia works /can work /should work. I would, though, also like to address the content and point out that this is the first time a member has been blocked for this specific reason - even though hundreds of others have done the very same thing over the years. And that was exactly my point: blocking has happened - sporadically - as has the occasional "suggested for speedy deletion" or any number of other hiccups on the way to learning how to make sensible contributions to Wikipedia but there has, to my mind, never been any clear pattern or frequently occurring hiccups. From our perspective, it often seems totally random. The "not enough (good) references" is probably the only exception and because it had been such a recurring theme and because we understand how important references are, my colleagues, students and I have continually been working on this over the years. I appreciate your suggestion to implement "a more centralized way, or a more clear way" of doing things and we will look into how that might be realized. But I'm sure you can understand my hestitation to try to address every eventuality for the one in a hundred chance that it might happen.
Thanks again for your support. OberMegaTrans (talk) 16:41, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
