About Javier Vargas

edit

Hi Blues power. In answer to your question on my talk page, the problem is that simply saying you have permission isn't enough to comply with our copyright and licensing policies. The text comes from a site that is clearly marked:

© 2011 Warner Music Spain.

If the copyright holder of the material wishes to donate it to Wikipedia, they must follow the instructions at WP:Donating copyright materials. This involves sending an email from an email address clearly associated with the copyright holder to permissions-en wikimedia.org using the exact text at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. That page also has further instructions and explanation about the process. Be aware that permission must be given for anyone (not just Wikipedia) to freely use or re-publish the text, even for commercial purposes and to make any alterations to it that they wish. So it's a big committment to release it under a free license.

Another point to remember is that even if permission to use the text is verified, it can and probably will be heavily edited for encyclopedic style and neutral point of view once it goes onto Wikipedia. If you are at all connected to Javier Vargas, either personally or professionally, you need to read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for guidance when editing under these circumstances. If I can be of further help to you just let me know. Best wishes, Voceditenore (talk) 16:58, 14 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I received your reply. The reference to the copyright of Warner Music Spain is not correct. The text entered is an english translation of the spanish biography of Javier Vargas in Wikipedia, and i´m the author of a good part of this text. The translation was done by Annie Altamirano, an english teacher and personal friend of Javier and myself. The text I recently removed was added by an anonymous IP [1]. Was that you? That text is identical, word for word, including grammatical mistakes, typography etc., to the text which appears on http://www.vargasblues.com/biografia_en.asp?#en. If that translation was first published on the Warner Music Spain website, we cannot publish it here without verified permission, or proof that Warner Music Spain copied the English translation from Wikipedia (the version you uploaded on 20 August 2011). Translations carry their own copyright. The only other alternative to sending an email verifying permission is to change the web page where the text appears to say:
"The text of this page is available for modification and reuse under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License and the GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts)".
In the meantime, I'll ask an expert on copyright to have a look at the situation and give further advice. I know this all sounds very complicated, but we have to formally verify permission and licensing to protect copyright holders, Wikipedia, and other websites that re-use our content. Thanks for your clarification Voceditenore. If you have means to verify this, you will see that the anonymous IP is mine. I do not intend to create a conflict, I will contact the author of the translation to know if it has registered, or otherwise I contact with Warner to request authorization for inclusion in Wikipedia. Many thanks for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.15.202.151 (talk) 09:06, 15 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
