You Only Live Twice

All I've done on You Only Live Twice in the past almost two weeks is move "Vehicles and gadgets" below "Plot". How does that make it considerably worse? You're overreacting. When I cut down From Russia With Love, it was by request. Not only that, the person requesting was warned about my prior work. And in the end, they liked it. Do you think it might help to block unregsitered and new users from editing the article even if only for a short period? And just to add to the above, the same user will not be very happy with me now as I have just reverted a comment left on the talk page. I have tried reasoning with them, and even edited the main article following on from what they said when they weren't aiming digs at me. I know I have responded, and that this discussion should be about the content and not other users, which I have tried to do for the most part. But when no matter what you say to someone they just want to disagree and argue with you, then debate is pointless. I still believe the article should be blocked to unregistered and new users though. For Your Eyes Only filiming in Cortina

Do you happen to know when they were filming For Your Eyes Only in Cortina d'Ampezzo? The reason I ask is that I am in the process of working in the bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton articles, including the tracks they race on. This includes the Cortina track which from watching bobsleigh coverage on Speed Channel from John Morgan in the United States stated that the track was shortened from its length of 2200 m set at the 1956 Winter Olympics to its current length of around 1600 m following the 1981 FIBT World Championships. Was the escape that Bond used on the Cortina track done before or after because Morgan stated the track was shortened following the 1981 event? Please advise. Chris 01:56, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

I am not sure what the copyright law in India was in 1931... but, since it was part of the British Empire then it could very well follow British law and not be in the public domain (unless under certain circumstances, such as non-renewal, which would be difficult to find out or prove). There is harm in stubbing them if the stubs contain false information. Yes, kong po rgya mda' rdzong is an inaccurate spelling of "Mainling County", and I don't see anywhere else on Wikipedia where this spelling is used. Actually, this is not the first time I've noticed this sort of problem in an article you've started. For instance, you wrote in the article on Amdo County that it is the birthplace of the current Dalai Lama, which it certainly isn't, and you created an article on "Pyenzhangling", which appears to be a misspelling of "Pelgye Ling". Agreed, Milarepa's Cave is a nice article. As for Pyenzhangling, I can't fault you too much for using Lonely Planet as a source; I can see where that might sometimes be necessary. However, it's not too surprising that occasional errors creep in, since it's not a scholarly work. Regarding Amdo, the Dalai Lama was born in Taktser, which is in the province of Amdo. If you type boghandler into the Danish box it (rather boringly) tells you that it means bookseller. That's one of the only two Danish words that I know. I have absolutely no problem with you setting up the lists however you wish. As I haven't been a part of this kind of project before I just want to make sure of what you are planning. Do you mean to make each decade its own page? I just want to be sure of how different it will look the next time I go there to edit. I am opening two windows as I work so that I can cut and paste from the film to add to the list. In doing this I also try to fix flaws or add missing materials (like IMDb links) when I am on the individual film pages. Again whatever you think is the right thing to do is fine by me. Fight Club image

I'm not sure if the image really adds anything to the article. If you're not aware, the standards for non-free content have been tightened, so even more so than ever, images need to be tied in to the content. I chose the image of Tyler and the narrator in the Plot section because they are the major characters of the film, and the image of Marla and the narrator to the relationship part of the Themes section. I know, I've been dealing with the same kind of crackdown. I don't think that they're wrong, but their approach is rather brusque. I think it's hard to accept that we may not have applied fair use rationales appropriately all this time because we're accustomed to the traditional setup. This upheaval is annoyingly abrupt, you know? This is something that should have been clarified a long time ago instead of now. Anyway, I'll look through the article and see if the image can be reasonably tied to any part of it. Screenshots are supposed to be for "critical commentary". If I do remove it, I'll see about deleting it. How would one go about that, just in case? —Erik (talk • contrib) - 15:51, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, that's what's been bothering me about the crackdown. The reasonable film editors haven't been trying to exploit loopholes or push their luck with defining fair use rationale. We learn from Featured articles and seasoned editors how to discuss and select images, and all that discussion goes to waste when the images are abruptly removed. We're not trying to cheat or anything -- we just went with what seemed accepted by consensus. Anyway, I'll be busy the rest of the day, so I won't be able to work out the new image right now. Actor infobox

Hello again Blofeld. Long time no talk. I appreciate your adding the infoboxes to some of the Thai actors and actresses. I wanted to let you know I have a few problems with this infobox.

• The placeholder image. It's annoying and ugly, and doesn't add any information. Frankly, I hate it. I hate the very idea of it. I understand the intent, but I don't believe the mainspace is the place for this type of thing.
• Flags. Why? There's text that says Thailand. That's enough.
• The background color. Is silver really the background color? The actor infobox is very unstable right now. The background color is among many issues that have never been resolved. I have preferred to not use the actor infobox at all until the template is stabilised. I have attempted to raise this in the past and nothing was ever resolved. The template's current discussion page has someone questioning it yet again, and no one seems to know the answer or is interested in resolving the issue.
• When I do use an actor infobox, I prefer to use it on an article that is lengthy enough to accommodate the box, and has enough information to justifiably fill in the box, with things like a photo, birth date and birth place, at the bare minimum. It's simply unnecessary on stubs. Sombat Metanee is the model for Thai actor pages. It's the best I've been able to put together so far.

Again, I really really do appreciate your work and the energy you bring to Wikipedia and film articles. I enjoy our collaborations. I am asking that you simply hold off on adding any more infoboxes to stubs until the actor infobox template is stable and then add them to articles that are better developed. Thanks for that. Aranya Namwong's looking better. It's much neater. I'd love to get her picture sometime. She's still quite striking. On the colour, some folks have been using silver for deceased actors, and gold for living, which to me is odd. The colour ought to be a hard-wired default, and be standard for all actors, living, dead or otherwise. Right now, though, the infobox discussions are bogged down with what awards to add or delete. Ta fa likit is a great choice for a much-needed Thai film article. It's very notable. It should be moved it to its English name, Who Is Running? (note the question mark). It'll actually link up with at least a couple of pages under that name already. I can cast in a couple of places for a clearer image. Until then, there is a way to limit the size so the pixels aren't blown; I've used an image size field in the infobox in a couple of other articles, and will look into that fix as well, if I can't find a better image. — WiseKwai 18:41, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Two things

1. I would be happy to help where I can with your new project and you might want to think about keeping them as two seperate projects (or project within a project) as the spaghetti westerns do have a different feel from traditional ones (to me anyway). Be aware that I am not very computer literate, thus, I am not good at creating tables or infoboxes and, as a wikignome, I think that my strengths are fact checking and cleaning up edits previously made.
2. Would you please take a look at this page Thérèse Raquin (1928 film) as I am not sure what to do with it in regards to our List of British films pages. The film itself is German and I don't think that it should be on our list. The article does mention some other productions of the novel. I think that they should either be moved to the page for the novel or split into a disambig page, both of which are suggested by others. It might be left on the category page (though even that is debatable) but, as stated above, I would lean to saying that it should not be on the 1928 section of our list. Let me know what you think because I am flexible to handle this however you think best. Czechoslovakian aircraft

Thanks for your suggestion. The current footer is the one that appears on all aircraft articles. I'm currently at least stubbifying Avia aircraft appearing on the list of missing aircraft. When I'm done in a few days, I will indeed be implementing extra navigation between these types. In the meantime, you can access similar types through the Category system. why all sorts of coplex categories are being created - ask people, who invented it (or ask User:Rlandmann - he seems to be closer to Wikipedia:WikiProject Aircraft). Or just search in WikiProject page. Personally, I like it (maybe there are only 2 or 3 categories, that I'd delete). If we describe all aircraft of the world, there will be more in most categories. List of Bulgarian films

I'll take on the 1960-2007 films as soon as I'm finished with the 50s one. The 1919-1949 needs to be rewritten though, cause the actual list is quite different. But it'll do for now - I really want to finish with the newer films and then come back to the first.

Yeah, but at the moment I'm stuck with a lot of work and study :( I,m afraid to start it cause I know I'll get too much involved with it and my studies will definetly suffer. Book is fine. Inline references are very helpful; mind also DYK deadline is one week stretched, five days usually. List of British Films 1940's

It looks good to me. I had been thinking about asking about the length that some of the pages might reach. The 1960's on might bear watching as they are getting somewhat long and we aren't even one third (I'm guessing) of the way through yet.

I am also wondering how we are going to add new films to the pages once we are finished. I added the category page to my watchlist but it doesn't show up after changes are made. I am guessing this is because no actual edits are made on this page since items only show up here based on category edits on the pages for the films themselves. Sir Blofeld ?

So when did the queen decide to knight the SMERSH guy ? jokes apart, I am trying to create as many stubs as possible first, as there is a huge list of Hindi film not yet on wiki, I have mainly focussed on the 1960's to 1970's, now starting to get to the 1950's. It's just that there is so much to do, I think I have made at least 300 of the 600 stubs in the hindi movie stub section, if I got into making them articles it would be a long time. Hopefully there would be some guys starting to polish them and when I run out of stubs to make I would work on many myselves.

Some users like User:Shakirfan are adding to the stubs (not always the way I would want it but....). On the talk page template, there is this user User:SkierRMH who seems to be tracking the stubs and putting on the template you are asking for and there is this SatyrBot too. I just figured that it gets done anyway but no one creates new stubs, so I focus on creating and linking new stubs (the linking takes a lot of time at times as any Hindi word of a films title could be typed as a variation so one has to go to individual actor pages and clean up the links).

How did a guy from Wales get involved in Hindi (among other) films ? And yes the list of Bollywood films new template is good and thanks for taking it on to clean it up and add to it.

It might not be a necessary solution for all the templates, but the Australian one has enough text to balance the flag, and the flag image for Australia needs to be larger, since it is more detailed than other country flags. I wish. He is allegedly included in the Coptic Calendar, which might have more data, but I don't have access to that source right now, and the Coptic Encylopedia doesn't mention him or his sister, although it doesn't mention a lot of people Holweck does. Also, the entry on his sister, later in the book, doesn't help in that regard either. I'm thinking that there's a good chance a lot of these mini-bios I'm making out of the Holweck book will, if no further info can be found, eventually merged into some other pages, maybe by feast day or something similar. But right now, having even searched the English language net, I can't find anything else which seems to reference him. As soon as I'm done with the "A"'s, and there are a lot of them out of the Holweck book, I'm going to try to find other sources which will have information on the stub articles starting with A. I understand this, and have pondered about making the articles long and hard and thought it was about time we deserve one. We have played countless gigs since we were formed (almost a year ago) and although we are not signed; we have been approached by several independant companies around the Brighton area. We made 100 sample CDs with 5 tracks on which we sold at 3 gigs around our area... all of which were sold out by the third one... No, it's just plain not acceptable for you to take a copyrighted article (which also happens to be Chinese governmetn propaganda, to boot) and illegally place it on Wikipedia, leaving it to sit there for months. Possible adminship

I noticed on your user page that you have already been asked to consider becoming an admin. I checked the records, and couldn't find any evidence of your every having run for it, so I assume you declined? I do think that you would make a good candidate for such a position, and would like you to reconsider it. If you were to so request, I think you would have no shortage of potential sponsors. Tibet article

Dear Ernst: You are doing a fabulous job on the Tibetan articles - for which I really thank you. The general article on Tibet is looking much better. I wish I had more time to make additions and do some editing. Perhaps when I finally get my book off to the publishers. Now, I know it is difficult to write fairly about the terrible destruction that has come upon Tibet since the Chinese invasion - and you will be attacked by people on both sides of this ongoing debate. One thing to keep in mind is that the Chinese do admit to a lot of damage during the "Cultural Revolution" (although they are, naturally, very touchy about all the destruction since then). Also, of course, I think it is only right to point out that probably most Chinese (at least in the early years) really believed they were doing the Tibetans a favour by "liberating" them. Rather like the situation where most Australians and Canadians thought they were "helping" their Aboriginal populations when they tried to "assimilate" them and forcibly took their kids away from their families and put them into "residential schools," and refused to allow them to speak their own languages or practice their own cultural activities.

But, at least, you should be able to detail some of what happened during the years of the "Cultural Revolution" without raising the ire of the Chinese too much. Also, I believe the government has recently admitted to "mistakes" in clear-felling the forests on the upper parts of the many very important rivers that originate in Tibet which is leading to horrific ecological disasters downstream (and I read somewhere that they are beginning to try to repair some of the damage - replant trees, etc., etc.) That would be a good subject to tackle. We must keep remembering that China is, of course, by no means alone in its mistreatment of conquered peoples or the wholesale rip-off of resources causing extensive damage to the environment - so, articles should be accurate and balanced - without too much finger pointing. (Who are we in countries such as Australia, Canada, the U.S.A. and Argentina to be pointing fingers at anyone?).

Another thing that is worrying me is that, in recent photos of the gross "amusement park" and huge square built in front of the Potala, it seems the famous and elegant Lhasa Zhol rdo-rings stone pillar (erected during the reign of Trisong Detsän), has disappeared. Do you have any contacts through whom you could find out if this is true and, if so, what has happened to it? When I was there - way back in 1993 - the pillar was still standing although fences and other crude structures had been placed around it so that it couldn't be approached closely. It was carved with very interesting inscriptions of the successful Tibetan campaigns against China in the 8th century. Fortunately, the Tibetan originals of these inscriptions and English translations are given in detail (along with many other fascinating inscriptions) in: A Corpus of Early Tibetan Inscriptions by H. E. Richardson. Royal Asiatic Society. 1985. ISBN 094759300/4 .

I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Hey. Yeah, I think the article covers the subject pretty well. It has at least two problems, however; it's even a bit too long (114KB) and has too few references. You have done great work with those wildlife articles. I'm no expert on Wildlife of Finland, so I will likely leave this subject for other editors, unless I find some very good sources. Your comment on my page

Ernst, the point is when you write an article, you assume everyone reading it is ignorant on the subject. It is writing 101 - you have to treat all your readers as if they are ignorant on the subject. You don't assume they know anything. And if I tagged the article, then the article really didn't do anything to enlighten me on the subject. If you feel others are less worthy than the article I tagged, you too are free to ask that they be deleted. In the meantime, improve the tagged article so it shows to everyone, and not just those in the know, why the person in question is wiki worthy. Postcard Cathy 19:52, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Questions arising over our British film list

Hello Ernst. A slight problem has arisen over our film list. I tried to include the animated film The Secret of NIMH as I thought that its subject matter was British. I was completely wrong in this assumption (must be the alzheimers setting in!) but the editor who took it out pointed out that the criteria on the original list page states "This is chronological list of films produced in the United Kingdom split by decade." I am thinking that this may need some rewording as a number of the films that I have entered weren't actually made in England. I know that at least one or two were made in Canada, some of the Bond films had little or no filming in the UK, Branaghs Much Ado About Nothing was filmed in Italy and Lester's Musketeer films were made in Spain. As I think about it I am not sure what might be a better wording so I thought that I would bring this to your attention before some bright spark who likes removing items goes through our list and starts deleting things that we have so painstakingly entered.

I have had one other question come to mind that is in this subject area. The Star Wars films were largely made in the UK - Should they be on our list?

Thanks for your note and thanks for the thanks! I am in agreement with your notes about the films that we are including, but I also think that you may want to reword the sentence on List of British films page that I put in quotes in my note above since the way that it is currently worded may imply that they must be produced in the UK to be included in our list. It gives some negative nellie the option to insist that they be fully produced in the UK based on this wording. What are your thoughts on the Star Wars films - should we add them or not?MarnetteD | Talk 21:24, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

I like what you added to the opening paragraph to help clarify the list. I don't feel that SW needs to be added but I did want to check with you. I do enjoy seeing many of my favorite Brit character actors (some of whom also had guest roles in Doctor Who over the years) acting alongside Vader and Luke when I watch the films.

Rotherin has been helping when he can but has a couple of other projects that he is also working on. I have observed that he likes working from lists other than the main one that we have been using. This includes lists compiled from various awards that are handed out. As these are usually handed out the year after the release of the film he may get the year of release wrong in a given list. I don't think that it is a big problem as the only one that I have found so far is when he entered The Railway Children in 1971 rather than 1970, but you may want to keep an eye out for future entries.
