Publishing article as a stub

edit

Hello Mike, I'm on vacation so don't want to leave you hanging, so here's what I'm going to do.

I'm going to publish your article as-is, but then immediately cut it down to a short stub which will be *completely* in-line with Wikipedia requirements, but will involve cutting out most of the current info. That info is not lost forever, it is fully visible by clicking the "History" tab at the top of the page, and I'll leave a note on the Talk page explaining that there's a lot of former content that didn't make the cut, but can be useful for further study.

I wanted to have a longer reply to your questions, but need to finish packing and catch a train later today, so all I can say at the moment is that I've been doing Wikipedia for 7 years, so I do have good reasons. If you would like a clearer response (which is totally understandable), I'd recommend you copy your question and paste it at WP:Teahouse, where there are a bunch of volunteer mentors who will be happy to chat with you at more length, and some of whom might be interested in improving the article.

I do apologize that I ran into a busy time for me so can't make this a big project, but as promised I'm making sure I get at least the basic stub article up there. Please do not try to expand it yourself, since it's simply impossible to write neutrally about yourself (see our guideline WP:Autobiography for explanation), but do feel welcome to upload a photo for it, so long as you totally understand and agree that uploading a photo entails releasing the copyright under WP:Creative Commons. See WP:Uploading images for more guidance.

Sorry for my rush, but this at least gets your page up and running. And please do feel free to talk to the Teahouse folks, very friendly and helpful people whose whole goal is helping others use Wikipedia. I might be back in the Washington DC area later this year or early next, so if I do and you like I can ping you then on your website, and buy you a whiskey or a root beer, as you prefer, to say hello. Understanding how Wikipedia does things

edit

Hello Mike, I see you have some concerns about the article. First off, I want to note that this is exactly why we always tell people don't try to write your own article on Wikipedia. I was willing to write one for you because I think you're an interesting subject, but you really need to stop trying to work on your own article. It is absolutely impossible for you to be objective about your own work, and also you keep trying to make edits which are not properly sourced. To answer a few points:

  • Why are the links to the National Traditional Country Music Association pages and the Library of Congress Recorded Sound Reference Center underlined in red as non-existent? These sites do exist. They are non-existed on Wikipedia; we aren't saying they're non-existent in general, just that nobody has written an article about them here yet. The red means "someone should write an article about them". Before they were blue because you were re-routing the link to go to their own homepage, but we don't allow such external links to be used in the middle of the page like that, and also because that obscures the fact that we need somebody to write those articles.
  • Regarding your nickname: if you say Plantenga is wrong, I've removed the nickname. However, you cannot simply go and fill in whatever nickname you want in its place, unless you have a clearly cited source.
  • You really need to read our guideline/warning WP:Autobiography to understand exactly why you shouldn't be messing with your biography. You should not be making any edits on that page except to remove blatant vandalism. Again, you are literally the last person on earth who should be editing your own biography on Wikipedia, because doing so compromises the neutrality of the project.
  • Lastly, I really suggest you read WP:Verifiability, not truth. The long/short is that a given fact is only useful if it can be cited to a good source, and no matter how true a fact is, it's no good on an encyclopedia without citation. So while we of course recognize that in the larger world, accuracy is the goal, on an encyclopedia our concern is how documentable a fact is. So on a certain level, we literally don't care whether a fact in Plantenga's book or in a Washington Post article is completely accurate, we care that it's clearly documented. Whereas if you make "corrections" based on your personal knowledge, that just makes the article weaker because each such edit decreases its Verifiability.

At this point, you really need to just accept that you have a biography on Wikipedia, and it's sourced to published works, and be (moderately) happy with that. Wikipedia is absolutely not here for you to "get the rest of the story out", or "build your brand" or whatnot, we're just here to compile and organize information that has already been published by neutral experts. So please refrain from trying to edit your own article, it always ends badly and wastes time for everyone involved to have to change things back and forth, and just trust the Wikipedia community to do our best to keep things running smoothly.   Hello, I'm JJMC89. I wanted to let you know that I reverted one of your recent contributions —the one you made with this edit to Mike Johnson (yodeler)— because it didn’t appear constructive to me. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. — JJMC89(T·E·C) 20:09, 11 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Why are you reverting back to the incorrect information? I already told everyone to cease and delete everything. According to Matthew, Wikipedia isn't interested in accurate information, only citable sources. So DELETE everything! I viewed a dozen different wikipedia articles on other country music artists and I don't see where my original draft was any different their coverage. Yet mine gets stripped down to next to nothing. DELETE EVERYTHING! I've been performing music since the mid-1960s and producing it since 1981. I have an international following and I can't allow you to continue this blatant attempt to minimize me and my music.

Please do not issue threats against other editors. You were told that an autobiography was a bad thing. You wanted it. Now you have got it. There is no reason to delete it unless you are not notable. You insist that you are notable. That notability is proven. I will, however, send it for a deletion discussion, something that will establish whether it is to be kept or not. You may contribute to that discussion. If you do I advise you to measure your words and attitude. Fiddle Faddle 22:48, 11 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mike Johnson (yodeler) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Fiddle Faddle 22:52, 11 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

I don't see any threats. The passages that Matthew used from Bart Plantenga's book are incorrect! The best way to resolve this is to DELETE everything. I'm not that desperate to be on wikipedia! DELETE EVERYTHING!

Mike, if you want to reply to the discussion, best place is to follow the "Articles for Deletion" link above and add your comments there. That said, again, you don't WP:OWN the page about you, so it won't be deleted just because you don't want it now. We have tons of pages about people that would rather we didn't, but we don't delete them just based on the subject's preference. If Bart or the Post or whoever didn't get some details quite right, well, that's too bad but that's the breaks of being a public figure. People will write about you and you can't control everything they write. Honestly, take a step back and consider: even if your Wikipedia bio is based on sources that are slightly off, it's not like there's anything *harmful*, right? Nobody is saying you clubbed baby seals on caused a stock market crash, it's just a basic bio saying you're a famous country musician, which you are. If you want to keep fighting it, that's your choice, but honestly best option is just to accept that you now have a Wikipedia article like you wanted, it's mostly correct, and be happy with that. It's a page *about* you, not your personal page to control. That said, it's a pretty good article and I am 99% sure it will help your career way more than hurt it. MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:31, 12 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
"I can't allow you to continue" is a threat, whether you issued it as one or not. "Not allowing" something has a consequence, real or imagined. The recipient of the statement is left to imagine what might occur, were you to carry out your "not allowing".
You insisted upon an autobiography. Perhaps you felt you could control it and enhance your career with it. We always advise against autobiographies, often saying with clarity that the writer will have no control over it ever again once it is published. You were that desperate to be on Wikipedia, but it seems that the rules of this place do not suit you.
As Matthew says, there is nothing harmful there. It is just not as glorious and wonderful as you hoped. WP:TRUTH ought not to surprise you. We only use facts that are in references in reliable sources. Other things may be true, but they are not cited facts.
Now, I have set up a deletion discussion on your behalf, though I disagree with deletion and have said so formally. You have the opportunity to comment there, something you should do well, and without emotion, and, ideally, once.
Wikipedia is not a web host. You do not control what appears here. Trying to do so almost always results in an impasse, something not worth achieving. Fiddle Faddle 16:55, 12 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Please do not attack other editors, as you did at User_talk:MatthewVanitas#DELETE.21_DELETE.21_DELETE.21. Comment on content, not on contributors. Personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Thank you. Fiddle Faddle 17:05, 12 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

I also object most strongly to your entry on my talk page which is abusive towards me. If you are to have any success here on Wikipedia you need to learn to play well with others. Behave with politeness at all times and recognise that "Do you know who I am?" never works, nor does abuse. Continuing to be abusive, especially towards those who have gone out of their way to help you, does not show the most pleasing side of your personality. You need to be aware the search engines have very long memories, and are also outside your control, but that they will soon pick up your unpleasant words and phrases if they have not done so already. Wikipedia is well indexed. Fiddle Faddle 17:13, 12 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Please stop your disruptive editing, as you did at Mike Johnson (yodeler). Your edits have been reverted or removed.

Do not continue to make edits that appear disruptive until the dispute is resolved through consensus. Continuing to edit disruptively may result in your being blocked from editing. Fiddle Faddle 14:59, 16 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

You may not blank pages here. You do not own this page. See WP:OWN. What you may do is to comment in the deletion discussion. Continued behaviour of this nature will lead to a block. Being blocked will prevent your being able to comment in the deletion discussion. Fiddle Faddle 15:02, 16 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you remove or blank page content or templates from Wikipedia, as you did at Mike Johnson (yodeler). Fiddle Faddle 16:35, 16 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

That is it. That is the final time you get to transgress. Now, please try to behave like the adult you are and stay within the rules. It's pretty much like driving a truck. You have to obey the traffic signs. You can try to break the rules but the traffic cops are looking. Fiddle Faddle 16:37, 16 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Now, you need to place your opinion about this article at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mike Johnson (yodeler). Do not blank the article again. nor vandalise it in any other way. This is Wikipedia's article, not yours. It just happens to be about you. Fiddle Faddle 16:44, 16 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

In the discussion you have been advised to visit Wikipedia:Contact us - Subjects to handle the circumstance where anything in the article is something you believe to be incorrect or libellous. This is your place of recourse.

The article on you is to be kept. This is a formal decision. While it can be overturned this is only for technical reasons.

I know this is not the news you hoped to hear, and commend Wikipedia:Contact us - Subjects to you. Fiddle Faddle 08:29, 19 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

You need to quit flip-flopping as to where you want a response. Your site is very difficulty to navigate and it takes me sometime to find the right place to do so, so I will just answer anyplace.

Since you insist on keeping this hack job I will be seeking legal counsel and forward your headquarters a notice of intent to file suit. Mike Johnson

There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. Davewild (talk) 18:53, 19 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
