Citation found - how do I add it?

edit

Hi, I have located a missing citation in the Wiki article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padre_Island but not sure how to add to the page. Please advise - thanks! Biosedman (talk) 10:06, 9 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Biosedman. For a general answer, you can see Help:References and Help:VisualEditor § Editing references. For a more specific answer, can you tell me what it is you'd like to add, and where you'd like to add it? (When you respond, try to inclue the markup {{ping|Tamzin}}, but I'll try to check back in either way.) -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 12:24, 9 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Tamzin: Hi Tamzin

The citation required is in the Geology section of the Padre Island wiki article:

Padre Island began forming as a submerged sand bar some 4500 years ago, as shown by radiocarbon dating of shells. Geologic speculation indicates the emerged island may be 1000 to 1500 years younger.[citation needed] Barrier island origins have been debated for many years by geologists, but it is agreed they are formed and modified by such factors as sediment type and supply, sea-level directional changes, current and wave strength and direction, and tide magnitude.

The geologic speculation referred to in the wiki article originated from comments made by J. H. McGowen and R. A. Morton in 1978 to the authors of this publication, published in 1980 by Texas Bureau of Economic Geology:

https://www.nps.gov/parkhistory/online_books/pais/1980-17/index.htm

on this page

http://npshistory.com/publications/geology/state/tx/1980-17/sec2.htm

Mention of the 3500 BP date is also made by Morton in this publication:

Hi, Biosedman. Thanks. So, what you should do here is go to that section (Padre Island#Geography) and click "edit". If you haven't already set a preference for how to edit, it should ask you whether you want to use the "visual editor" or regular (source code) editor. I recommend the visual editor for new users, so I'm going to give you instructions for that, but if you'd prefer to use the source code editor, let me know and I'll tell you how to do that instead.
So, assuming you're using the visual editor:
  1. Go to where it says 1000 to 1500 years younger and delete the "citation needed" right after that. You just have to hit backspace twice.
  2. Click where it says "Cite" at the top of the screen.
  3. A dialog will pop up, giving you three options: "Automatic", "Manual", and "Re-use". Click "Automatic".
  4. Paste https://www.nps.gov/parkhistory/online_books/pais/1980-17/index.htm and click "Generate"
  5. Click "Insert"
  6. There should now be a little box showing a reference, but it's not done! Click "Edit" in that box.
  7. Fill out "Last name" and "First name" for Bonnie R. Weise, "Source date" as 1980.
  8. Click "Add more information"
  9. "Last name 2" and "First name 2" for William A. White
  10. Type "page" and then click the fourth option, "At". (Yes, it would make sense if you could just type "At" and have that be the first result, but sadly it doesn't work that way. Don't blame me. ;) ) For "At", put "Origin and Geologic History of Padre Island".
  11. Once you've added that and any other information you want to. Click "Apply changes".
Now follow that same process for the other source. Then when you're done, click "Publish changes" in the top right corner, write a summary explaining what you've changed (like "Added sources for geologic age"), click "Review your changes" to make sure everything went as planned, and then click "Publish changes" a second time.
I know that that sounds like a lot, but trust me, it's easier than it used to be. If you have any other questions, including if you'd rather learn how to do this in source code, or using one of the scripts and gadgets we have just for adding sources, please let me know (using {{ping}} again). -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 22:09, 9 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Not able to see Visual Editor

edit

@Tamzin:

Hi Tamzin

I tried following your instructions and think I have changed so that I can see Visual Editor. Not sure where I delete - in the source or in the page above? I'm only able to edit in the source, but what do I delete exactly please?

Thanks,

Patrick
