About Thelephora

Hi! I have a doubt about Thelephora item you've modified, which is that why reference marks, such as [1], [2], and the like, are put outside commas or periods rather than inside? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yancheer (talkcontribs) 02:57, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Yancheer, per WP:REFPUNCT, punctuation goes before the reference, not after it. Look at any other article and you will see this. Bgwhite (talk) 04:55, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi. I made an edit on the digital detox page. I actually added a sub-heading which was deleted by you, reason is that it violates MOSHEAD. I actually used the new beta edit so I can not say if the syntax was right. Kindly lead me as to what to do to correct the error. Please move the Template:Did you know nominations/Game Brain (film) to Template:Did you know nominations/Concussion (2016 film), but it should be without leaving redirect. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 15:11, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for info on punctuation

Thanks for the info on punctuation and refs. I stand corrected. I used to work in the Math lab at UVU. DEMcAdams

I have just finished a quick review of your changes to Chambourg-sur-Indre. I can see valid reasons behind most of the changes that are easy to review, and will be reviewing them in detail to see what else I can learn. One I don't understand is changing |language=fr to |language=French. It seems to generate the same results, but takes more characters. Is this a style specification issue?

By the way, the article is only about 2/3 translated. I expect to have the rest finished in about a week. I will be implementing the things I have learned from you edits, but an additional review would be welcome. If you request it, I will let you know when I am done. --DEMcAdams (talk) 15:50, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

DEMcAdams, feel free to ask me questions anytime. It is daunting to edit with so many rules around here. In {{cite web}}, it says |language= is to Use the full language name or ISO 639-1 code. So, either |language=fr or |language=French are just fine to use. The examples on the cite web doc page uses French and you will find more editors using French instead of fr. As I was looking at every reference to see if website should be changed to publisher, I just converted the language parameter. I was a math tutor in college and part of the time worked in my University's math lab. I really enjoyed doing that. Bgwhite (talk) 20:34, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Kitty161, there were two things wrong with the section heading.
  1. It was in all CAPS
  2. The first heading starts out as a level 2 header (==), where as the article's first section header started out as a level 3 header (===). See WP:ACCESS, the section right after the Table of Contents.

  • Saadkhan12345, I put the climate chart a section above and removed an image to make room for it. The section the image was in had two images. Should only do one image per section. Bgwhite (talk) 07:33, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for your edit on the Monarch butterfly migration article

Thank you for your hard work on the monarch butterfly migration article. The table that you cleaned up looks fantastic. I do have a big problem though. I think you can probably help me with this in about five seconds. I have been cutting and pasting sections of the table from a page in my sandbox. I was wondering if you could go to this sandbox page and use your AWB editing tool to reformat the entire table in the sandbox page. It would take me hours to reformat the version of the table that I have in my sandbox and then insert it into the article. Here's my sandbox page:User:Bfpage/sandbox/conservation organizations. Please don't insert the whole table into the article because I have not completed all the sections that are in my sandbox.

Thank you so much and you are good editor.

Bfpage, Done, with my OCD on display. I wish AWB would help out with tables, so it is done by hand. I've done so many that it didn't take much time. Bgwhite (talk) 05:35, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
You did it by hand!!!! I am so sorry, I would never have asked someone to do it by hand. That would have something I would have had to do. That, to me is a monumental effort on your part. I will never be able to thank you enough.
Be ready to see about ten barnstars from me on this talk page. I'll spread them out over a couple of months so no one sees it as vandalism.

Gamergate controversy

You seemed to have added two protection tags on top of the semi-protection tag already on the article here when you protected the article twice in a row somehow.—Ryūlóng (琉竜) 08:31, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

Ryulong, thank you for telling me. Compounding my "normal" wackiness, I'm having troubles saving/loading pages right now. I'm pressing save and it can take awhile or it times out. Sometimes it did save, other times it didn't.
We should take bets on when Gamergate becomes the most repeatedly protected page in the history of Wikipedia. Bgwhite (talk) 08:41, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

City renaming discussion

Thanks for starting the discussion on WT:INB. Like you, I too think that it would be good to have a clear-cut strategy for how to deal with this perennial issue... but am not sure what that strategy should be. Will add my opinion to the discussion at INB if I can come up with anything useful to say.

In the meantime, apologies for any brickbats you may receive for starting the "parallel discussion", since my suggestion at Talk:Bangalore at least played a role in that. Cheers. Abecedare (talk) 18:23, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

I got another picture!

Dear Bgwhite,

Camille and Kennerly sent me a new picture, and I've already received permission from Commons to use it. Please don't tell me that I'm amazing because I already know that, but I would be most grateful if you could please add it to the article. You just might get a barnstar from me someday in the far future, which I know is your golden dream. Here is my world-famous sandbox, and here is the relevant edit with the picture and its description. As always, thank you very much for your generosity. May the gods bless you (I've become a pagan since my last visit to your page). Dontreader (talk) 04:49, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

That looks glorious! Better than the photo placement I had in mind! Thanks for your prompt help! Dontreader (talk) 05:48, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Dontreader, I put the photo at the beginning of the section due to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Accessibility#Images, rule #5. I'm not speaking to you. I'm still waiting for my signed photo. <I turn my head and put my nose in the air> Hmpf! Bgwhite (talk) 06:10, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Bgwhite, thanks for the link. I saved it just now on my user page because I might need to read it again in the future. However, other parts of that page have information that a person with an IQ of 75 cannot understand, which is unfair to me. Anyway, honestly, I think at this point, after all you've done for their page, you should write to them, and I think they will gladly send you a signed photo, at the regular price, of course, plus the shipping fee. Dontreader (talk) 06:31, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Dontreader, I forgot about your IQ of 55. It certainly isn't that I'm overly optimistic of your mental abilities. I think to myself, "55? Nobody could be that stupid, it must be a typo for 75, my IQ." I'm worried about asking for a photo. I fear I'd get a signed photo of yourself. Bgwhite (talk) 06:38, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
I'm an uncommonly handsome man, Bgwhite, especially when I pretend to be drunk while speaking with a Russian accent, as you surely remember. As a matter of fact, I sell signed photos of myself, and I charge more than the harp twins charge for theirs. Dontreader (talk) 06:49, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

St Helen's, Ashby-de-la-Zouch

Thanks for your edits to this; I'm slowly working it up to FA standard. I saw your edit about using red numerals in the captions. I did think about colour-blindness, when I added the caption, but my reasoning was that the red highlights the numbers for normal vision and doesn't make any difference for colour blind readers since there are no other colours for numerals or text to confuse it with. I assumed that sufferers would just see the red as a shade of grey rather than not at all. I'm just seeking clarification here since I'm not colour-blind myself and I'm obviously missing something, thanks Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:49, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Jimfbleak, yes and no. Majority of people who have red colour blindness will see black/grey. So, you are correct in your statement above. However, you are using highlights for normal vision, but no highlights for colour blind. Adding bold will do highlights for both sets. In addition, bold will also "highlight" for those using screen readers. Bgwhite (talk) 08:02, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
Does that mean that using red and bold would be OK? Jimfbleak - talk to me? 08:05, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
Jimfbleak, yes, as far as I know. Don't use <font> as that isn't HTML5 and that's the reason I arrived on the page. <span> is HTML5, but {{color}} is sure easier to work with. Bgwhite (talk) 08:12, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I would avoid red. It is not standard practice here and it adds nothing that cannot be achieved with bolding. - Sitush (talk) 08:15, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
OK, I'll leave as is. I used <font> because that's the only way I knew. I'm not an expert at coding, didn't know about the tag template either. Thanks Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:07, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
I didn't know that the tag template could be used like this. I leave such technical matters to young whippersnappers like Bgwhite ;) - Sitush (talk) 13:09, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
@Jimfbleak and Sitush: Bgwhite is not suggesting that you use the {{tag}} template - that is for demonstrating HTML markup. The suggestion is to use the {{color}} template, as in {{color|red|This is red}}This is red. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:41, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I realised that, I meant that I hadn't come across it to demonstrate mark up, I would have used <nowiki> for that Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:37, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Yun Mu Kwan

Just wondering why you made the alterations you did to the article here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Yun_Mu_Kwan&diff=632745550&oldid=632645503

I figured you're trying to correct something I did yesterday but I'm not sure we're working with the same thing in mind. I was trying to move a large hunk of text out of the main body of the article and into what I think is a useful footnote. I wanted to streamline and simplify the article without losing the useful information in the text I was trying to move. So I moved it using the various symbols wiki seems to allow for that. Your change seems to have moved that text back into the main body of the article but also resulted in the appearance of some flags indicating further problems with the piece. I'm not sure how to fix or even if what I've attempted to do (move a piece of text into a footnote format) is in keeping with wiki standards. Can we talk about this and maybe find a way to sort it out? Thanks.

S. W. Mirsky 21:51, 6 November 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Swmirsky (talkcontribs)

Swmirsky, they main change I did was to {{|title=Problems in the Identity and Philosophy of T'aegwondo and Their Historical Causes by: Steven D. Capener cite web|url=http://www.bluewavetkd.com/images/GoalSheets/capeneressay.pdf}} http://www.bluewavetkd.com/images/GoalSheets/capeneressay.pdf "
You had listed the same URL twice and didn't label what type of cite template it was. I changed {{|title= to {{cite web |title=
I made another change to remove the error flag. Bgwhite (talk) 22:58, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. The only problem is that the segment of text I had put into footnote form has now returned to the body of the text itself. That's how it originally was but I had been trying to lighten up the text on Prhese's recommendation and one of the ways I figured that could be done was to just lift that segment of text, which does slow up the read, and place it as part of footnote #4. Are you thinking it should be back in the main text or did you just not realize that that was what I was trying to do when you corrected my erroneous symbol usage?
If you're proposing a substantive editing change I'll take it into account. But perhaps you just didn't realize what I had meant to do when you corrected my mistaken use of the cite template?

Rb119 @C.Fred:. This is weird. This is not the first time I've seen this. Seen the exact same edits made elsewhere over the past couple of weeks. For the life of me, I can't remember where, but some of them were disambig pages. Wikquote articles Singapore and Ketuanan Melayu have been hit as well. There's even a Wikia page. Punctuation and footnotes.

Re [28] and [29], where the ref tag is moved to the right of the full stop, despite the ref only being for the last clause of the sentence, not the entire sentence. Should I now add {{failed verification}}, because the source doesn't mention the information in the 1st clause of the sentence, but the ref being outside the full stop indicates that it references the entire sentence? -- Jeandré, 2014-11-10t10:54z

Jeandré, there is no need for {{failed verification}} or any other template. The reference is sourcing part of the sentence, thus it is not a failed verification. Two things I can think of, you could break the sentence into two or you can add {{cn}} after the comma. I like these problems. Usually people don't add refs. Deplorable situation regarding Marcelo Monte (racing driver) article

Hello Bgwhite,

I nominated the Marcelo Monte article for deletion because it does not comply at all with the WP:Golden rule, and the creator of the article has refused to add sources (see his talk page), plus I can't find almost anything about the subject (certainly no significant coverage online). However, he does seem to have raced in Stock Car Brasil, and the driver's article says that he drove in the 1984 24 Hours of Le Mans race, so I took a look at that article, and there he was. Therefore, and since one of the contributors to the Marcelo Monte article showed up in the AfD discussion showing signs of severe anguish, I withdrew the nomination citing WP:NMOTORSPORT as the reason for Marcelo Monte deserving a Wikipedia article, at least in theory.

But now I'm furious. I know that I've acted like a son of a b**** sometimes on Wikipedia (although I've made big efforts to improve in recent months), but I've always been honest. I can't tolerate outrageous unethical behavior. I knew that the creator of the Marcelo Monte article had uploaded a picture to Commons (twice), claiming to be the author, when in fact it was taken by someone else, so it was deleted both times (I notified Commons the second time, and then it was speedy deleted). However, I now have realized that the creator of the article (Mathias karl estress) is involved in equally serious code violations, if not worse. Marcelo Monte appears in the 1984 24 Hours of Le Mans article because he put Marcelo Monte in there, wiping out a legitimate driver. And that's not all: a non-registered user from Brazil did the same thing in the Portuguese version of the article, here. I have reverted both edits, but this is a very serious matter. You can't just tamper with history like that, to try to make your Wikipedia article look notable. Marcelo Monte did not race in the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1984, or ever. I found three entirely independent articles with the results of the 1984 race, proving that Mathias karl estress replaced Margie Smith-Haas with Marcelo Monte to enhance the notability of the article he created. An investigation would almost certainly confirm that Mathias karl estress has the IP of the user who modified the Portuguese Wikipedia article in the same way. And quite possibly the guy who got all frantic at the AfD discussion is also him (Flavio Teixeira Prado). Here are the independent sources (notice that there are some discrepancies concerning the finishing positions when you get to the DNFs, but that's to be expected). It was Margie Smith-Haas who took turns with David Ovey and Paul Smith, not Marcelo Monte: [30], [31], and [32]. Please, doesn't such immoral conduct have automatic serious consequences? I don't know the rules nearly as well as you do. I know you are very busy, so please take your time to reply. Thanks in advance. Dontreader (talk) 23:41, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Thank you very much, Bgwhite. Actually, earlier today I felt quite sorry for the guy who got so frantic about the article being possibly deleted, so I really tried to find sources, even doing advanced searches in Portuguese, for example. Ironically, that's how I found out that Marcelo Monte never raced in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and that the English and Portuguese Wikipedia articles about the 1984 edition had been altered to include Marcelo Monte. But I shouldn't have felt sorry when that guy (probably the same guy who created the article), was begging for mercy. I spent a lot of time in the AfD discussion telling him how Wikipedia works and what he had to do, giving him many links to read, but he did nothing to improve the article. Plus a highly deceitful plot was carried out with obvious premeditation. I had never seen anything nearly that bad happen on Wikipedia. Thanks again for your time and help. Dontreader (talk) 06:20, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Dontreader, you were writing here while I was writing too. "I've acted like a son of a b**** sometimes on Wikipedia", Pffft, sometimes? Hah, that is a funny one. I'm still waiting for my signed photo, but I guess somebody is lying to me.  :) Well I placed a BLPProd on the article way back when and no reliable reference was ever added. They had a Wikipedia page and a dead link as references. I guess Flavio claimed the dead link was his blog, and that doesn't count as a reliable ref. So, I just deleted the page under BLPProd.
  1. Your first mistake was actually believing Flavio when there was no proof. You withdrew your AfD without any proof presented. Doesn't matter if they are lying or being truthful, proof has to be shown.
  2. On the AfD, you should have moved the discussion to their talk page. The discussion was about referencing and they were not understanding. When it comes to a person who really doesn't understand English, I try and find someone who knows their language.
  3. Nothing should be done to Flavio at this point. They are new and odds are they will go away at some point, usually because the figure out they can't get their own way. If Flavio had been around awhile, then it would be different, but it would a more difficult job. They would have friends and they would know how to game the system.
I'd wager they will create the page again or ask me why it was deleted and that would be a long discussion. Nothing to do now. Nothing to get worried over or get steamed about. Wish it was that easy with all people, say a certain beer person. Bgwhite (talk) 06:25, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Well, Bgwhite, first of all, I did have a relapse recently, showing my "son of a b****" syndrome at the AfD discussion of The Wakes (band), but that was because I wasn't praying to my pagan gods for a few days, for serenity. Also, in general, I hold a grudge against society because I have never received a barnstar. Anyway, I had no clue that you had ever placed a BLPProd on the article. I'm slipping. Thanks for your advice regarding the AfD situation. Yes, you are completely right, for a change. I find it amusing that you saw my final message to Flavio! I was probably a bit too dramatic! Oh, and actually I'm getting along much better with the big beer fan. He does have some very valuable experience, and he's helped me twice over the past couple of weeks or so. I must thank him and hopefully there's something I can do for him. We have some things in common, I've realized now that I'm old and grey. Finally, Bgwhite, I have exciting news for you: Camille and Kennerly will have their two CDs on sale (20% off and free shipping) early next month! What else can you ask for in life? Bot working on Airline codes-N

There already was a {{reflist}} in Airline codes-N via transclusion in the correct place. You added a second one at the bottom of the page. Vegaswikian (talk) 17:02, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Vegaswikian, I saw something was off when all the Airline code articles popped up on the list for the second day in a row. Your change to the template on November 9 is what caused the pages to show up on my list. The ref section shouldn't be in a template and it's only possible right now because of a recent change in the MediaWiki software. I want to say a bot also did this, but the person is no longer active. @Magioladitis: would know better than me. Bgwhite (talk) 19:18, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
I think we have to find a better way to deal with subpages and in general we should avoud reflists in templates. @Frietjes: would know better than me. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:22, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
if it would help the bot, you could always change {{Airline codes/Page bottom}} to {{Airline codes/Page bottom|{{reflist}}}} or something. Frietjes (talk) 19:44, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Yes, that could work. The reason this belongs in the transcluded code is for it the section to appear correctly, before the external links section. Vegaswikian (talk) 20:23, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Tobyjamesaus. You almost had it right. The location was the main thing wrong. Looks at the other navbox in the article, {{Australian Idol}}. You want to create the navbox in template space (template:Australian Idol). That way, you can add the navbox into other articles with one line of code and you don't have to update every article when you update the navbox. Bgwhite (talk) 05:44, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
Excellent. Thanks for your info. I'll have another go at it on Monday. ;p Tobyjamesaus (talk) 05:59, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
Tobyjamesaus, Pffft, Monday? You Aussies are such wimps. :) A real Wikipedian would already have it done and filed a case at ANI about me. Give a yell if you have another questions. Bgwhite (talk) 06:07, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
hahahaha..... Wimps?! Whatever; All good. Ok, so I have tried to do it, but I am clearly missing something. I had a look at the Australian Idol one as an example, but I didn't want to edit that template. I am fairly new to this and not really getting it. Any chance could just create a basic template for her and I'll populate it? Or I can copy and paste it all in here? Or if there is a guide for me to follow, I'll do that too. Tobyjamesaus (talk) 01:40, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
Tobyjamesaus, I think you were over analyzing this. I created {{Marcia Hines}} and added it to the article, Marcia Hines. I also created some categories, specifically: Category:Marcia Hines, Category:Marcia Hines songs. I added all the necessary overhead to the categories and also to Category:Marcia Hines albums.
On any of the articles for Hines' albums, you can add {{Marcia Hines}}. This is where the power of templates lies. One template on many articles. Need to change something, just change the template and not all the navboxes on each individual album. I'll let you look at what I did, as it would be easier than explaining it. Bgwhite (talk) 06:10, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
What a star! Thank you so much. I didn't put a tl at the start of the navbox, maybe this was the issue? anyway, all good. I have gone through and put the navbox at the bottom of her songs/albums already. Have an awesome week Tobyjamesaus (talk) 01:01, 12 November 2014 (UTC)
Tobyjamesaus, the tl is only for presenting the template on talk pages. In articles, you don't use tl. Bgwhite (talk) 01:14, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

A cookie for you!

Thanks so much for BG19bot's edit on Indiana Hoosiers field hockey that fixed a simple mistake that I made while editing the article. I really appreciate it! Michael Barera (talk) 18:45, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood vandal(s)

Since you were so helpful to us in the Cyberchase issues of anonymous IPs vandalizing the page, I wanted to ask if you might consider intervening on another page, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, which has been repeatedly vandalized by anonymous users with only an IP address. The information they are adding is spam and has no basis in fact. They are trying to suggest that future episodes of the show will mirror plots of other well known programs such as Dr. Who and other such ridiculous things that have no basis in fact. They have been warned repeatedly to stop vandalizing the page or risk being blocked. Would you please put some protection on this page so only registered users can edit it and/or block the troublesome IP spammers? Thanks for intervening. I will be watching this page anxiously for your response. Thanks again! --Jgstokes (talk) 07:06, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

Jgstokes, I've put page protection on for one month. If you have any more problems after then, give me a yell.
When I saw Dr. Who, I was expecting a sci-fi show, not a kids show. That thru me for a loop. Unless there is a reference for the December episodes, I'd suggest you remove those. I will get even with you... I've got Mr. Roger's singing in my head right now. Bgwhite (talk) 07:26, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
It was in the episode description. Someone claimed that in one of the episodes, The Doctor (and Daniel) had to fight an intergalactic battle of epic proportions. I'm glad to see people appreciating Doctor Who, but I don't feel that gives them the right to vandalize pages. Thanks for doing this. There is a reference for the December episodes--local listings and listings available on reputable TV guides. But it was felt and agreed by consensus that rather than citing these references to validate episode descriptions (since it is just a kids' show after all), it would be better to merely note on the talk page where the descriptions came from, which we did. I can think of worse things happening to you than having a Mister Rogers song in your head. But I won't say what I mean by that as it would just get something annoying stuck in your head. Thanks again. I owe you big time! --Jgstokes (talk) 07:35, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

How do I start a new page from a disambig page?

I know you moved an article out of my sandbox successfully once but I still dont know how to do it. Please advise.--Wuerzele (talk) 16:48, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Wuerzele I'm not exactly sure what you are asking, so I might not be giving the right answer. You can move an article in one of two ways. (1) There should be a "move" button under the "more" option at the top, next to "edit", "read", and "view history". (2) Add a tool, such as User:MusikAnimal/MoreMenu. It includes a move option. Reversion of Proxy firms

I am looking for assistance on your editing of an edit on proxy firms last week. Am attempting a BOLD edit which makes the page more comprehensive, global and topical. I have submitted a request to move the page to Proxy Advisor, the term most frequently used. Any guidance appreciated.Patience62 (talk) 18:44, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

A beer for you!

Thanks for editing my page (CAMS)... appreciate your help.. you could help me to add a logo picture? Greetings from Soody 09:39, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
Soody72, you need to add {{Infobox company}} to the CAMS article. You can click on the link I gave and it will take you to the documentation for the company. The National Stock Exchange of India article also contains Infobox company and you can look how it is done there.
FYI.. the article needs to be renamed to something shorter. I renamed it to Computer Age Management Services. Bgwhite (talk) 18:37, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

References getting lost in the AWB wash

In this AWB-assisted edit, you lost two (weirdly formatted, but still present) references without any indication in the edit summary. You were then reverted to fix a false positive spelling correction, then you re-instated the other changes, including the reference dletion. Those were the only references in the stub of a BLP; it was PRODded yesterday. It would've been a shame if that led to an article on an otherwise evidently notable topic being deleted. Please be more careful with automation and scrutinise your edits more closely. Facing the Sky (talk) 17:56, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

Facing the Sky, for the life of me, I don't know why I removed the Quill & Quire ref. I remember reading it because that ref was the only thing keeping me from prodding the article. I removed the other ref because it was from a book selling site. The BLPProd that was added was not a valid prod. There were two refs in the article. The ISBN are enough to prove she wrote the books, thus no BLPProd. Remember, people make mistakes and AWB does not mean automation edits. People always fall seeing that.
