Speedy deletion nomination of User:BeowulfTheDionysian edit

A tag has been placed on User:BeowulfTheDionysian requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section U5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to consist of writings, information, discussions, and/or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals. Please note that Wikipedia is not a free web hosting service. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. BeowulfTheDionysian (talk) 17:52, 30 December 2019 (UTC) I just joined Wikipedia as a monthly donor and set up my user page. I am not sure why it is being marked for deletion, did I do something wrong? Please advise, I would very much appreciate your assistance in understanding what I need to do. Thank you!Reply

I believe the speedy deletion is in error too. The user is a new user who has used some flowery language to tell us why he chose his name. I don't think this is inappropriate for Wikipedia. Can we go with WP:BITE on this one and give the user a pass please? -- Sirfurboy (talk) 18:18, 30 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
@BeowulfTheDionysian: It is possible that the person who placed this template on your page is concerned about your reference to Firefly Horizons and that this could appear to be advertising your services. Could I suggest removing that from your description? -- Sirfurboy (talk) 18:23, 30 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi Beowulf and welcome to Wikipedia! I believe someone mistook your introduction for unrelated commentary or something, but I've removed the deletion tag. Hope you continue contributing. – Thjarkur (talk) 18:27, 30 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello BeowulfTheDionysian,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username John from Idegon and it's nice to meet you :-)

Hi John, I was just approved by Thjarkur "(talk) 18:27, 30 December 2019 (UTC)" and thought I was good to go. "Hi Beowulf and welcome to Wikipedia! I believe someone mistook your introduction for unrelated commentary or something, but I've removed the deletion tag. Hope you continue contributing." What do I need to do to get this resolved? Thank you! BeowulfTheDionysian (talk) 19:22, 30 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
I'm not John, but my advice is minimally, delete mention of your website. Deleting the third paragraph might help. Mainly, User pages are to present your interests and intents vis-a-vis editing Wikipedia, not your life philosophy. David notMD (talk) 19:35, 30 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

It's highly unfortunate, but we have a problem with people using Wikipedia for many types of promotion and advocacy. I'm certain you are acting in good faith, but a platform for promotion and or advocacy is one of several things Wikipedia is NOT. I'm not trying to brag, but take a look at my userpage. You'll find a list of my interests, both on and off wiki, a list of my advanced permissions on Wikipedia, a couple cute graphics about Wikipedia, an essay I wrote (based on a Teahouse post, actually), and a list of awards I've received from other editors. It shows my interests to my fellow Wikipedians and doesn't advocate or promote anything (well, the essay does, but that's an on wiki issue, so it's part of telling my peers who I am).

Also, please be advised that one other editor cannot "approve" an edit. Your edits are all subject to editing and or removal at any time. Wikipedia is a collaborative project. John from Idegon (talk) 22:10, 30 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I owe you an apology. I missed the earlier CSD, and I shouldn't have speedy'd it again. However, I think we're all better off where it is now, but certainly won't pursue it further. John from Idegon (talk) 22:17, 30 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

In case you missed this in all the ruckus about your User page, when editing any article, original research, i.e., original thoughts and opinions and insights are not allowed. Even experts in their field are expected to add (or delete) content solely based on the ability to provide valid references/citations at the same time. Many editors develop content at their own Sandbox, then drop it into an article only after that are satisfied with the wording and referencing. And sometimes it is work reviewing the Talk page content of an article before editing the article - could be a point you want to make has been debated and decided on in the past.
