You have done an excellent job on Alan Tam's page. The only thing is that Tam has not retired yet. He is still releasing albums and doing concerts every year. He is going to have a concert in CA USA later this month. I have made correction on the page. BTW, would you be able to do the Tam's page in Chinese? —Preceding unsigned comment added by E intelligence (talkcontribs) 22:14, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Ok I thought he pretty much was retired from "commercial" singing and only doing stuff for charities etc. Thanks for fixing that. About the zh wikipedia pages, unfortunately I really have no plans to make any major edit there any time soon. Perhaps in the future. Benjwong (talk) 05:25, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:MKLTcast.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:MKLTcast.gif. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Thanks for uploading Image:Taleofwhiteserpent.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Hi Benjwong -- sorry if I was too quick, but it seemed better to merge this stub into the main article, Boxer Rebellion especially since it had some information that has now been shown to be wrong, especially that the Boxers were "rebels." Speedy deletion of Serf liberation day

A tag has been placed on Serf liberation day requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the article or have a copy emailed to you. Fair use rationale for File:PrincessKnightManga.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:PrincessKnightManga.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. (ESkog)(Talk) 15:13, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Nixon's visit to China

Regarding this edit, please use a descriptive edit summary when you revert good faith edits. While not strictly required, it is strongly recommended and will help new editors understand why their additions were removed. This is very important because you may be the first point of contact that editor has with the encyclopedia--if you make that a positive experience, you can help create a lasting relationship. If you make that a negative experience, that editor may leave and never come back. Thank you. Protonk (talk) 23:36, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

You are welcome to fix it before I revert. It looked to be dumping more stuff into the article at random again. Benjwong (talk) 23:40, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
I'm afraid I'm not being clear. When you revert a user's good faith contributions, use an edit summary that explains why. This has nothing to do with whether or not you choose to revert them, though I disagree with your decision to do so here. Is that more clear? Protonk (talk) 23:44, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Don't you think you should be approaching that user on how to properly do references instead?? Benjwong (talk) 23:49, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
I can do both. But their inability to perfectly format references isn't a problem. that's what makes the "wiki" part of wikipedia work. What is a problem is when that content is removed and that content contributor given no reason for the removal. You could have formatted the references. You could have added a tag suggesting that the section or paragraph needed work. You could have done nothing. But you reverted. The actual act of reversion is not one that I'm going to discuss. I want to discuss the use of a descriptive edit summary. Please use one when reverting good faith edits. Protonk (talk) 00:01, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Umm if you know how many vandalism we go through daily, you'll know I was only trying to help. I can put a summary in next time. Please don't lose any sleep over it. Benjwong (talk) 00:04, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
It's fine. Reverting vandalism is awesome and requires no edit summary. Thanks for the self-revert. Protonk (talk) 00:10, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

I have reverted my own changes. If you want to fix it, please jump in. I'll umm pretend it is not on my watchlist. Benjwong (talk) 00:07, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Brackets?

Hey Benjwong, long time no see! I see that you've been checking out the History of the Han Dynasty article. What do you think? I also just created the Economy of the Han Dynasty article, and plan to create others for the Han Dynasty like I did for the Song Dynasty.

Anyways, I noticed that you added brackets to all the Chinese characters throughout the article. I was wondering why you found that necessary. Is there a Wiki guideline you can provide a link to which says that this is necessary? Becuase I followed the same model of not adding brackets for Chinese characters in Economy of the Han Dynasty. I'd like to keep things as uniform as possible throughout all the Han articles.--Pericles of AthensTalk 20:38, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Ah! I just took a peek at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (use of Chinese language), and they do use brackets like you do. Nevermind!--Pericles of AthensTalk 20:42, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
Oh I always follow that bracket convention. I really don't know if it's preferred or even necessary. But I do it anyways. If that convention page say it is ok, then I guess is ok. Yeah I read alot of those dynasty articles. They are pretty good. Benjwong (talk) 20:57, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Televison cultural building

Thank you for our work on the Television cultural building. I do have a small isue. Although the page is shaping up nicely, you did not get consensus for the merge. It is bad form to go ahead with a merge especially when a case against it is made without acheiving full consensus. Please in the future contribute to the discusssion prior to merging and then after acheiving it do the merge. Thank you. Presently I do think a change in the title should be made to illustrate that it is a disaster Ottawa4ever (talk) 14:50, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi I thought you guys had the concensus on the talk page? I was helping out with the merge. There did not seem to be disagreement with having just 1 article. You can change the article to whatever you like. However, I would say this is not a disposable residential building. There is a possibility that this gets rebuilt. So treat it like a building article please. Benjwong (talk) 17:30, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
I do think that an article just about the fire and investigation is needed. If they rebuild put it in a building article, but I doubt it would be the same building. Anyway as i said before the article is shaping nicely but eventually i see it seperating as two articles if not now shortly. The investigation from this will lead to alot of development in fire engineering despite how much a certain government would like there to be no coverage. Not to go into it too much right now, but why would a building like this not collapse fully developed in fire opposed to a building like wtc7 of same size but smaller fire. There are structural engineering explanations to this and they will come out as well as controversy surronding them. And if they rebuild a seperate building article would be useful for the new construction refering to a fire from before. ThanksOttawa4ever (talk) 19:35, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
If you have enough to add, I guess you can split the article. However, it'll all fit in one page for now. Somebody must have seen the need to merge and tagged it. Like I was cleaning up the article. Benjwong (talk) 00:38, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Unsourced or poorly sourced possibly defamatory info about living persons.

Controversial material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately, especially if potentially libellous. Do not reinsert the disputed material - instead, seek a talk page consensus to include it. Consider this your final warning that inserting poorly sourced information to biographies of living persons is unnaceptable. Hipocrite (talk) 21:39, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Tagging

You said: [1]

benjwong, this is not excessive tagging. All of these unsourced sections need references. If you want to remove the tags, please provide references. Each paragraph should get one reference minimum. The same reference can be used multiple times. If it feels very "in your face," good. The lack of references is a problem, and it needs to be fixed.

Please understand that Wikipedia is evolving, and we are demanding higher and higher standards from our articles. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:41, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

  • Each paragraph needs an inline reference so that each piece of information is attached to a reference. You may use the same reference more than once (this is why "refname" exists) - You said: "I find it really strange. I'll revert it for now." - No, Benj, that is the wrong thing to do. Please stop doing that.

The correct thing to do is to reference each unreferenced piece of information.

I will say this again: The frequency and placement of the tags in my revisions is 100% appropriate and justified; it is not excessive. If you do not want these tags to exist, please add inline references to each and every tagged section! Please consult: Wikipedia:Citing sources and Wikipedia:V. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:16, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

  • BTW - Thanks for telling me about those other articles. I'll go tag them too WhisperToMe (talk) 18:34, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
    • Thank you very much - that one was totally unreferenced. WhisperToMe (talk) 21:51, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Salt Monopoly?

Hi Benjwong;

I posted a suggestion on the Song Dynasty talk page that this is a neglected topic which needs to be coordinated through a number of articles. It would be great to get your help on this! Maybe as a senior Wikipedian you could mentor BZ on how to do it? ch (talk) 16:42, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Sorry I know little about song. I just know that huge chunk was added with no source. Also no other country page mention about business monopolies to this extent. Benjwong (talk) 03:22, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
  • I have no idea what the person who added the material wants to do, but I just thought the topic was interesting and important. So if they don't do anything, maybe I'll cut down this addition to the Song article to two or three sentences, add links to the mentions of the Salt Monopoly in the Han and Tang articles and to the references in other Song articles. I found a book on the subject which I think I can get hold of. If I get ambitious, I may start a short article on Salt Monopoly (China), maybe with links to the references in French and German history. Thanks. ch (talk) 03:26, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I added this material and simply did not know how to post my source as it is entirely from "Salt and State" by Cecelia Chien-Fang. If you could help me get something about the Salt monopoly added (a huge topic in Song China) I would much appreciate it and I believe wikipedia would be much better off as a result.

Hmm. The article has seen a lot of changes in the past two weeks. You should definitely take another look. Cheers.--Pericles of AthensTalk 17:11, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Tiananmen Incident

I have a question about an edit you made to the Tiananmen Incident page a couple of years ago. Under the "Mourning" section, a sentence currently reads,

"On April 4, for example, hundreds and thousands of Beijing residents came to the square to lay wreaths at the Monument."

The wording "hundreds and thousands" strikes me as strange (why not just "thousands"?). As far as I can tell, it read "hundreds of thousands" until your edit of 02:39, 15 May 2007. Was your change of meaning inadvertent, or do you have reason to believe that there were only "hundreds and thousands" of wreath layers that day, not "hundreds of thousands"? I want to check with you before reverting "and" back to "of". Cheers,Phlar (talk) 04:21, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Ok if you mean this edit. I did not add any thing. I just cleaned up. Benjwong (talk) 02:13, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Your cleanup is very good and makes the article much more readable. Sorry, I should have been more clear in my question above. This version saved by you on 15 May 2007 reads "On April 4, for example, hundreds and thousands...." The immediately previous version dated 12 May 2007 reads "On April 4, for example, hundreds of thousands...." I'm thinking "hundreds and thousands" could be reverted back to "hundreds of thousands". Phlar (talk) 04:45, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Yah you can revert it. Grammar errors. Benjwong (talk) 04:48, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
OK, thanks! Phlar (talk) 14:37, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of File:RoastedChestnutHKStreet.jpg

A tag has been placed on File:RoastedChestnutHKStreet.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [2], and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:

  • state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
  • add the relevant copyright tag.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Orphaned non-free media (File:Suziewongmovie.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Suziewongmovie.jpg.

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:23, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Removal of unresolved issue tags

Please do not remove commented tags about unresolved article issues, as you did on Cui Qun.[3] Also please consider the proper use of edit summaries to support your actions in a collaborative environment. Thanks,  The Little Blue Frog (ribbit) 11:26, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Ok this has to be a mistake. There are 13 references on that page. Also there are no unresolved issues anywhere. Benjwong (talk) 02:37, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
No mistake, and the inlined annotations (in addition to the instructions in the issue boxes) made it crystal clear. Restored with further tag for primary sources and OR. Address those tags instead of deleting them: most of all those articles won't pass AFD.  The Little Blue Frog (ribbit) 04:12, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
I left a message at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Repeated removal of annotated unresolved issue tags. Please continue there. Do not write anymore here. Benjwong (talk) 04:26, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Chiyou

Hi, I was planning on editing a portion of the Chiyou article which you had contributed to. I have listed my reasons in the talk page [4], but before I make any changes, I would like to get your comments on it if possible. Thank you whipsandchains (talk) 18:54, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Naming convention for Chinese foods and usages of Wikitionary

Since you're an active contributor to Chinese cuisine-related articles, you input on ongoing disputes over naming conventions for Chinese food and usages of wikitionary on Chinese characters would be appreciated. List of sources of Chinese culinary history

Could you add some information to the article that is not up for AfD because I don't read simplified Chinese, and could not find sources easily. Your help would be appreciated.--Caspian blue 18:09, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Your additions in Chinese language reverted

You reversion in Anita Mui fails WP:BURDEN. "The source should be cited clearly and precisely to enable readers to find the text that supports the article content in question." You re-added 8,000 bytes of non-English text that cannot be read by the bulk of English Wikipedia readers, nor checked. Piano non troppo (talk) 05:15, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

If it was 8,000 bytes of English text, would you delete it? Benjwong (talk) 05:20, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

517 Protest

Most of the content in the article 517 Protest was a copyright violation, and has been removed. See Wikipedia:Copyrights for Wikipedia's copyright policy. Shubinator (talk) 00:42, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

I see you undid my edit. The text currently there does not meet Wikipedia policy, as full sentences are copied and pasted from the sources. The sources are not public domain, and are therefore under copyright, and cannot be copied word for word. See a recent Signpost dispatch: Even if contributors provide a citation for a sentence, it may still be plagiarism if they do not clearly indicate with quotation marks the duplication of the source's wording. Shubinator (talk) 02:58, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
Wikipedia's non-free content policy is very clear on the usage of copyrighted text. You may use limited quotations of copyrighted text under certain circumstances, but to do so you must utilize quotation marks to indicate what you are doing. Even if you cite a source, you cannot just drop material from copyrighted sources onto Wikipedia. (See also Wikipedia:Copyright). I have again removed the content. You're more than welcome to return it, but please do not do so without either rewriting it completely in your own language. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. If you wish to quote limited amounts of text, you can do so under the circumstances described at the non-free content guideline: "to illustrate a point, establish context, or attribute a point of view or idea." Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. If you need help revising this material, please let me know. I'll be happy to help. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 10:47, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
Having finished the first morning matters, I've gone on ahead and rewritten this material to separate it from the source. Again, the problem is in using language directly from the sources, which we cannot do, even if we say where it came from, unless it conforms to WP:NFC. In US law, credit is insufficient to eliminate copyright concerns. Wikipedia's rules for allowing copyrighted text to be incorporated into articles do require explicitly marking copied text and also using copied text in limited circumstances. I'm watching your talk page if you'd like to discuss this further. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:14, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
Ok thanks for fixing the article. Benjwong (talk) 01:50, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
