Conditional independence

edit

Dear Benjamin, your edit left the said article messed up. In particular, you replaced events with variables in the section on the conditional independence of events. Compare here [1]. Also, the statement "if and only if  ..." does not make sense, strictly speaking, for several reason, including the way you define Z and because you don't specify whether P is a probability of event, a PMF or PDF.

Please revert your changes and refrain from making significant changes to articles when you lack sufficient expertise.

thanks for pointing this out; you are right that the text i had written incorrectly conflated events with random variables. apropos of that, you are also correct that   is not a meaningful statement when   is a random variable. i would rather not revert the entire edit; it contains a few additions that i think are worth keeping, namely a proof that was oddly missing, and some inline links to other definitions. however, i have introduced a new edit that corrects the issues you noted. it looked very much like this important article had not received sufficient attention in a while, and i elected to be bold, rather than let the other shortcomings linger. apologies for introducing an error, but it should now be corrected.
