Final year and team in infobox

I'm confused. Why are you removing the final year and team section in the infobox?--Yankees10 18:42, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

Also you don't really need to use NFLnew, since the other link works fine.--Yankees10 18:45, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
final year is a stupid parameter in that infobox.
I replace the old NFL ID with NFLnew because the old ones are likely to expire at some point. --bender235 (talk) 18:53, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

I agree that edit summaries should always be added, and that they should be concisely explanatory. Further, Preferences has an option to automatically encourage edit summary addition. Finally, any editor who hopes to become an administrator should have a consistent history of good WP:edit summaries, wikilinking applicable policy#sections where helpful. --Lexein (talk) 15:43, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

Hollywood Walk of Fame

I see you're changing http: to https: in urls. This is fine. But the [1] WP:edit summary (clean up using AWB) does not state what's done, or what drove these edits (consensus, discussion, guideline, MOS, policy, or AWB Job request). Possible improved examples:

(cleanup w/AWB, HTTP->HTTPS, per WP:AWB/TA) or
(cleanup w/AWB, HTTP->HTTPS, per VPT) or
(cleanup w/AWB, HTTP->HTTPS, per VPM) or
(cleanup w/AWB, Selective HTTP->HTTPS, per VPP) This is the most recent broad consensus on selective -->HTTPS, but is missing a definitive list of sites and agreed URL disposition.

There may have been other discussions meriting AWB work.... Thanks. ---Lexein (talk) 16:09, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

I see your point. The thing is that I also include various other fixes and clean-ups, which is why I believe the general "cleanup" summary is valid. I could, of course, also include a link to a policy (discussion). --bender235 (talk) 16:20, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks - anything you can do to doc your https changes, such as link to relevant guide or discussion, would be appreciated. --Lexein (talk) 02:25, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Changes you are making from "http:" to "https:" are against consensus

You are doing this exactly as was opposed at the VPP (link from your edit summaries). What was supported there was changing to protocol relative links. What you are doing (unanimously opposed):

http://web.archive.org/web/20100305071446/http://www.factcheck.org/bushs_16_words_on_iraq_uranium.html
to:
https://web.archive.org/web/20100305071446/http://www.factcheck.org/bushs_16_words_on_iraq_uranium.html

What you should be doing (unanimously supported):

http://web.archive.org/web/20100305071446/http://www.factcheck.org/bushs_16_words_on_iraq_uranium.html
to
//web.archive.org/web/20100305071446/http://www.factcheck.org/bushs_16_words_on_iraq_uranium.html

Please correct your AWB script and go back through all of your recent changes. Makyen (talk) 19:06, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Wayback uses HTTPS by default. Therefore, it is only correct to switch those links to https://. It makes no sense leaving a http:// link (or protocol-relative one, for that matter), if the website in question does not want you to. --bender235 (talk) 19:10, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
NO, it is not. For exactly the reasons detailed at VPP. That is why doing what you are doing was unanimously opposed. The links that you are changing are exactly what that discussion was covering. The one of two examples in the discussion was web.archive.org.
The point is that having protocol relative links lets the user continue with using https:, if that is how they are reading Wikipedia. If they are reading Wikipedia in http: protocol, they get the link as http:. What you are doing is breaking all those links for readers viewing Wikipedia from situations which block https: (e.g. the entirety of China and various businesses). Leaving a protocol relative link results in the viewer being able to continue to read using either http: or https: protocol. This is one reason why both Wikipedia and web.archive.org provide both.
It would only be appropriate to change the links to https:, as you are doing, if the site was only available in the https: protocol.
Please change what you are doing. Makyen (talk) 19:41, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
Ok, I agree with your argument. But tell me, just out of curiosity: what sense does it make to use protocol-relative links now when Wikipedia will switch to HTTPS by default soon? Plus, could you please give me source for the notion that HTTPS is "blocked in the entirety of China"? I can't find anything about that on our lenghty article on Internet censorship in the People's Republic of China. --bender235 (talk) 10:57, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
From a brief look, it appears that on the subject of HTTPS being blocked entirely in China I have inflated an argument from VPP, which appears to have correctly copied the original, much less broad, statement from the link (activate HTTPS by default), which you provided in your initial post there requesting clarification on using HTTPS links. I have unintentionally inflated what was actually stated. What was actually stated was that China completely blocks HTTPS to Wikipedia.
I hate it when other people inflate arguments like that without checking facts. I am quite pissed at myself for doing so. A brief search shows that some websites have switched to HTTPS in order to prevent China from implementing specific subject/topic oriented blocks. Thank you very much for calling this to my attention. I have changed/corrected it the one other place I have repeated it. I have also marked it as deleted above, as I believe in being aggressive about not propagating such memes.

However, that does not change the other places where HTTPS is banned (some businesses), nor the other arguments against switching all available links to https. More importantly, it does not change that the consensus was to use protocol relative links.
Quite frankly, I was surprised when I realized you were the person who originally asked on VPP about switching links to HTTPS. I was very surprised that after asking about it, and even mentioning protocol relative links in your initial post, that you then proceeded to implement the exact opposite of the consensus that was unanimously shown on that page.

Note: The link that you provided regarding Wikipedia switching to HTTPS states that it was to have occurred on August 28, 2013. It appears to have occurred already for logged in users.
As to what sense it makes for us to use protocol relative links: A) see the arguments at VPP. From my point of view, the most telling are: 1) changing our external links to HTTPS, or HTTP, inappropriately imposes a choice we have made to use HTTPS upon the reader when the ability to allow the reader to, either knowingly or unknowingly, have the option to use either protocol is trivial on our part (by using protocol relative links rather than forcing HTTP or HTTPS). 2) HTTPS is blocked/broken/negative for the reader in some contexts. Makyen (talk) 20:19, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
As of your edits yesterday and today using the edit summary "clean up; http->https or pr-URI, per VPP using AWB" (or similar), you are continuing to change links from HTTP to HTTPS where both are available (a brief look showed this for at least //www.youtube.com/).
It is possible that continuing to make these changes is an error in your configuration of AWB. Thus, I wanted to double check: Do you intend to continue making these changes, from HTTP to HTTPS on sites that support both, in spite of the fact that doing so is against the consensus on VPP (that discussion is now closed)? Makyen (talk) 17:15, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
That was, indeed, a mistake. I'll switch YouTube to PR, too. --bender235 (talk) 18:16, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks.
FYI: A discussion has been opened at VPP regarding how we implement using protocol relative links. The person who opened the discussion made the point that using PR links currently becomes broken if the user saves the webpage for offline viewing. However, I just checked in Firefox, the Wikipedia App and IE. All three properly handled saving pages with protocol relative links. The links were translated to the protocol in use at the time of saving the page [Firefox and IE file contents verified, content of the actual file not verified with the Wikipedia App on Android, but clicking on the link was verified; only saving while using HTTPS was verified.]. Freedom House references

Hi, Bender. Can you look at two of the references that you adjusted at Freedom House today? The conversion from doi to full ref didn't happen "within minutes". When I told it to "jump the queue" it got most of it right, except for the page ranges which I corrected to no effect. Thanks. --71.178.50.222 (talk) 22:43, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

Update: the Gastil reference now shows the correct page range, the Mainwaring ref does not, yet. I also added the issue parameter to both refs but it hasn't appeared yet either. --71.178.50.222 (talk) 23:10, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

Better not take "within minutes" too literally. Sometimes the bot is busy, and it takes a couple of hours. But don't worry, the citation will be completed. --bender235 (talk) 23:37, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
OK, I will try to be patient (but it's unAmerican)! Let's change "within minutes" to "within days" (lol). (Your edit to a doi ref, #206, at Europe at 09:13 on 23Jan still has not updated). Thanks. --71.178.50.222 (talk) 01:58, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

"clean up; enabling HTTP Secure for selected external links. using AWB"

Hi there :)

I'm a bit concerned about your recent edits, they seem to be breaking archival links by removing the http. But what is happening seems a bit inconsistent. example here. Was this a mistake, or can you explain? Thanks! -- Fluteflute Talk Contributions 17:56, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Bender235 changed the links to protocol relative links (PRL) instead of ones that insist on using HTTP when HTTPS is available, or HTTPS when the reader might not desire it. When someone clicks on one of those links their browser will open the new page using whichever protocol, HTTP or HTTPS, they were using to view Wikipedia. Hi, Bender. Is Citation bot supposed to be putting in the complete page range for journal articles when you use the Cite doi template? Thanks, but...

Thanks for this edit. Rather than adding a "See also" section with merely one entry, "patent troll", which is inherently disparaging, it would be perhaps better (in my opinion) to add a paragraph explaining that the company has been regarded by the media as a patent troll. Redirect "placeholders" for season articles

Hi Bender. I am politely requesting that you refrain from creating anymore "placeholders" (as you call them) for college basketball and college football season articles. These links do nothing to serve navigation for anybody, and in fact only confuse readers as to why a redirect would even exist. Examples include, but I'm sure are not limited to:

I'm sure I'll find more as I go along, but please, please, please stop making these. Now there are blue links on and where there should be red links. Readers will click on those seasons thinking they'll find more out about that year specifically, only to be redirected to the team's main article for no explanation at all. Connolley

Hi, I was reading up on climate, and finding the article on "Bond event" I was surprised to find it hadn't the obvious hallmarks of most climate articles of being edited to fit a certain green propaganda event. The usual sign of this is the contribution of a certain William M. Connolley.

So, I was interested to see your comment: "gosh, you're a pain in the neck".

Yes he is! However, after he caused me a lot of hassle in an online forum, I decided to have a look at his background. Apparently he isn't even a scientist let alone a climate scientist. He's done nothing notable in his life - except he has pushed his propaganda on Wikipedia until people like me decided that we would never again edit.

So, why does he have his own vanity article on Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.6.107.192 (talk) 23:18, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

I never met Mr. Connolley in person, and from our online disputes I can't say too much negative about him. Even tho we clashed on several issues, he was always rational and solidified his position with sources. I met far worse people on Wikipedia so far.
Why he has his own Wikipedia article? I don't know. If it's to your great displeasure, feel for to nominate it for deletion. --bender235 (talk) 09:52, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

Http and Https removal

Can you be so kind and explain where does it say that Wikipedia doesn't allow http code being used??? I'm talking about your edit on 2014 Ukrainian Revolution article. Just read the signpost where it was discussed, its a switch from http to https not complete removal of http.--Mishae (talk) 23:51, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Mishae, what Bender's edit did was to enable "protocol relative links". If a person is using https for Wikipedia, they will use https for the archive link. If a person is using http for Wikipedia, they will use http for the archive link. Some people are unable to use https, thus this allows the archive link to work for everybody and have security enabled for those who choose security. Personally, I wish there was a better solution. Bgwhite (talk) 08:56, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
Just like Bgwhite said. Please read here, too. --bender235 (talk) 10:10, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
Yes, and made connection tio Wayback Machine slower. :(--Mishae (talk) 15:32, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
No, connection speed does not change one bit. Plus, if you enter Wikipedia on HTTPS, chances are you care about reader's privacy, and want to exit Wikipedia on HTTPS as well. --bender235 (talk) 15:34, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
O.K. I'm starting to move every article back to your format (at least those that I edited yesterday. Questions is: Will I be blocked for doing so?--Mishae (talk) 15:41, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
Mishae, connection speeds are slower as there is some additional overhead required to make a secure connection. But, we are talking milliseconds, so it shouldn't be noticeable. I personally use HTTPS Everywhere browser addon to use https as default on as many sites as possible.
You will not be blocked. As an admin, I can block anyone. Hmmmm... Bender, for $100, I won't permanently block you. :) Bgwhite (talk) 18:38, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. I appreciate the humour but the question was rather serious because we have policy on destructive editing and by doing such edits some admins might think that its counter productive. Not to mention, not everyone reads signpost. Which brings me to another question: Where do I sign up for it? I tried to find it and failed.--Mishae (talk) 23:45, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
If any admin mentions block or says it is destructive editing, then they have a huge, inflated ego and *they* have the problem. You can sign up for it at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Subscribe. Bgwhite (talk) 00:01, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, in case of anything I have your back.--Mishae (talk) 03:04, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

implementing https etc.

Hi Bender235. A lot of your changes to do with Wayback/https in George Harrison song articles have appeared on my Watchlist. There's a slight problem in that, while English-style date formatting (dmy) is favoured in all these Beatles-related articles, your changes (eg here) are consistently rendered in US-style mdy. I think this needs addressing, because obviously it looks as though each article is stylistically inconsistent. Is there anything you can do, or that can be done, to remedy this? Thanks, JG66 (talk) 02:53, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Hm, I guess Wayback needs a dmy date feature then. Wait, it already does have one. I'll fix the article you mentioned. --bender235 (talk) 09:37, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi Bender235

It appears that you broke quite a few weblinks to the web archive here. Could you explain why this was done and can you check whether similar errors were made in other articles?

Thanks --hroest 09:58, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

Those links aren't broken. Just test them. I implemented what is called protocol-relative links, see above. --bender235 (talk) 12:05, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

I've noticed that you've been making near bot level edits that to me seem along the same lines of whitespace formatting or switching between English variants. Indeed a bot would likely fail approval (I have code for it) for a task like this as unnecessary. I note that in the VPP link in your edit summaries, the closing comment includes:

Note, however, that the discussion doesn't concern the implementation of this proposal, and therefore a new one should be initiated regarding this.

Could you please provide a discussion that permits these edits? 930913(Congratulate) 18:55, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Maybe you want to be a bit more specific. What are you referring to? --bender235 (talk) 20:17, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
Pretty much the only thing you've been doing over the last few days. Edits like this. 930913(Congratulate) 22:13, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
Oh, I see. What's wrong with this edit? YouTube is a valid template. Why would I need a special permission to implement it on other articles? --bender235 (talk) 23:45, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
As I said initially, "you've been making near bot level edits that to me seem along the same lines of whitespace formatting or switching between English variants." These seem unnecessary edits - they do not change or improve the article and therefore do not warrant an edit. Also, were the changes worthy of an edit, it would be better suited to a bot (flag), that can edit at these high rates without spamming the RC. Furthermore, rather than making articles relative one link at a time, it would be best to make the whole article relative in one edit. 930913(Congratulate) 00:13, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, well, the latter is what I already do. I don't only change plain YouTube links to templates, but also plain Internet Archive links to Wayback. And that's all there is. No other links are meant to be protocol-relative. And the good thing about templates is, that we can decide on how to code the link later, at some central place. So what I do is by no means "along the same lines of formatting whitespace". I implement valid templates, which is a clear improvement over plain links (which, by the way, cannot be done by bot). If you think otherwise, feel free to nominate these templates for deletion. --bender235 (talk) 00:18, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

!. --bender235 (talk) 15:15, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello. I was asked to assist in this matter. The conclusion I've come to is that although the edits themselves are fine—that the YouTube template is approved for widespread use—the issue is that it's being done through AWB and not an account with a bot flag. This is an issue because the mass quantity of these edits causes people's watchlists to swell with your edits, while this would not happen with a bot-flagged account. You argue that bots would not be capable of this. My first impression is that it's actually really trivial to code a bot to do this, but I am wondering if you have any additional insight on this. Otherwise, I would recommend either coding a bot and going through the bot request for approval process, or to go to Wikipedia:Bot requests to request that someone do this. In any case, I appreciate your efforts to improve Wikipedia, and I am happy to see you continue editing. Harej (talk) 02:43, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

Or, in lieu of coding a whole new bot, just create a separate account with a bot flag and do what you have been doing with AWB. Harej (talk) 02:45, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
Hm, I thought about that, too, once. I asked whether those small, high-frequent AWB edits (back then it was WP:AWB/T) require me to have a bot-flagged account. The answer back then was "no". So you think edits like this require a bot flag on my account? --bender235 (talk) 09:23, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

re John C. Davis

Since you created the article John C. Davis, I wanted to ask whether this was a misidentification. The only source given in this article refers to Rennie Davis as the "son of President Truman's chief of staff of the Council of Economic Advisers", but does not mention the name "John C. Davis". Where is this name coming from? I wonder if this was a misidentification with Joseph S. Davis, who served on the Council of Economic Advisers 1955–58 [2]. However, I could not find a connection between this person and Rennie Davis. Maybe you can help. --bender235 (talk) 12:07, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

A Masters' Thesis in further reading has no problem running afoul of WP:SOURCE, because it's not being cited as a source to document any fact in the bio. Even if it were, which I emphasize again that it was not in this case, it would still probably meet "reliable source" status, but I could see a squabble happening over that, perhaps. One can always read a thesis or dissertation at the university at which it was submitted. Additionally, ProQuest has a "Dissertation Express" through which dissertations and many theses may be purchased. http://dissexpress.umi.com/dxweb/search.html is the URL, for the record. Hope this helps. —Tim /// Carrite (talk) 02:14, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

I didn't mean to imply that a master's thesis cannot meet WP:SOURCE. I only question the utility for our readers of having literature named in the "Further Reading" section that cannot be accessed relatively easy. --bender235 (talk) 10:59, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Observing "use dmy dates"

Hello. When you change web.archive.org links to a templated version in an article with use dmy dates specified, as at e.g. Daniel Bruce (footballer), please would you observe that format. I believe the Wayback template has a |df= parameter to facilitate this. Thanks, Struway2 (talk) 12:41, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Ok, I'll keep it in mind. --bender235 (talk) 13:04, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

HTTPS/HTTP

Reading VPP, I see that it says "protocol relative links", your (recent) conversions on the Debian and Arch Linux pages are not that. A protocol relative link is when "//" is used in the place of "http://". mthinkcpp (talk) 12:24, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Case in point, www.gnu.org, it supports both http and https, your edit has forced https. mthinkcpp (talk) 12:28, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
Latest information I had was that PRL were somewhat beta, causing problems when a page was saved for offline usage or so. Which is why I refrain from implementing them on Wikipedia as of lately. --bender235 (talk) 14:16, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) That erroneous concern was raised and demonstrated to not be the case in all environments tested using default save settings. It only occurred when the user explicitly changed the default save format to one where the intended functionality resulted in breaking all Wikipedia links (most are protocol relative). The non-default format chosen is intended for use when an exact copy of the HTML, not a functional copy of the page, is desired. This is usually done for debugging or development. A functional copy of a page requires much more than just an exact copy of the HTML which is why it is not the default for saving in any environment tested (IE8+, Firefox, SeaMonkey, Chrome, Wikipedia App). The editor who raised the concern withdrew it. — Makyen (talk) 19:23, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
Yes, please stop forcing HTTPS where PRL will work fine. Legoktm (talk) 08:04, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

Wait actually, I'm a bit confused here. The VPP thread you link to in your edit summaries (1), explicitly says "Note, however, that the discussion doesn't concern the implementation of this proposal, and therefore a new one should be initiated regarding this". Was that discussion ever held? And it would probably be a better idea to link to *that* discussion... Legoktm (talk) 08:09, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

What would there be to discuss? --bender235 (talk) 09:06, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) That discussion was held (or at least begun). Some progress was made in formulating a plan. A section describing what protocol relative links are was created in the uniform resource locator article as a link target usable in edit summaries to reduce confusion. However, no complete plan of action was developed. — Makyen (talk) 09:26, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

OER inquiry

Hi Bender235, I'm sending you this message because you're one of about 300 users who have recently edited an article in the umbrella category of open educational resources (OER) (or open education). In evaluating several projects we've been working on (e.g. the WIKISOO course and WikiProject Open), my colleague Pete Forsyth and I have wondered who chooses to edit OER-related articles and why. Regardless of whether you've taken the WIKISOO course yourself - and/or never even heard the term OER before - we'd be extremely grateful for your participation in this brief, anonymous survey before 27 April. No personal data is being collected. If you have any ideas or questions, please get in touch. My talk page awaits. Thanks for your support! - Sara FB (talk) 20:36, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Invitation join the new Physiology Wikiproject!

Physiology gives us an understanding of how and why things in the field of medicine happen. Together, let us jumpstart the project and get it going. Our energy is all it needs.

Based on the long felt gap for categorization and improvization of WP:MED articles relating to the field of physiology, the new WikiProject Physiology has been created. WikiProject Physiology is still in its infancy and needs your help. On behalf of a group of editors striving to improve the quality of physiology articles here on Wikipedia, I would like to invite you to come on board and participate in the betterment of physiology related articles. Help us to jumpstart this WikiProject.

 • Feel free to leave us a message at any time on the WikiProkect Physiology talk page. If you are interested in joining the project yourself, there is a participant list where you can sign up. Please leave a message on the talk page if you have any problems, suggestions, would like review of an article, need suggestions for articles to edit, or would like some collaboration when editing!
 • You can tag the talk pages of relevant articles with with your assessment of the article class and importance alongwith. Please note that WP:Physiology, WP:Physio, WP:Phy can be used interchangeably.
 • You will make a big difference to the quality of information by adding reliable sources. Sourcing physiology articles is essential and makes a big difference to the quality of articles. And, while you're at it, why not use a book to source information, which can source multiple articles at once!
 • We try and use a standard way of arranging the content in each article. That layout is here. These headings let us have a standard way of presenting the information in anatomical articles, indicate what information may have been forgotten, and save angst when trying to decide how to organise an article. That said, this might not suit every article. If in doubt, be bold!
 • Why not try and strive to create a good article! Physiology related articles are often small in scope, have available sources, and only a limited amount of research available that is readily presentable!
 • Your contributions to the WikiProject page, related categories and templates is also welcome.
 • To invite other editors to this WikiProject, copy and past this template (with the signature):
 • To welcome editors of physiology articles, copy and past this template (with the signature):
 • You can feel free to contact us on the WikiProkect Physiology talk page if you have any problems, or wish to join us. You can also put your suggestions there and discuss the scope of participation.

Hoping for your cooperation! DiptanshuTalk 12:34, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

3RR warning =

Your recent editing history at Scott Lash shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.

To avoid being blocked, instead of reverting please consider using the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. See BRD for how this is done. You can post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection. Cwobeel (talk) 17:00, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

You gotta be kidding me. --bender235 (talk) 17:07, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Actually I am not. You just breached 3RR with your last revert:
 1. Revision as of 12:20, 14 May 2014 [3]
 2. Revision as of 14:09, 14 May 2014 [4]
 3. Revision as of 16:41, 14 May 2014 [5]
 4. Revision as of 17:09, 14 May 2014 [6]
You may want to consider self-reverting. Cwobeel (talk) 17:21, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
I only had to revert because you did not read! You reverted on the account of "no source", when there actually was one. --bender235 (talk) 17:23, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
My understanding is that 3RR is a redline. As a "regular" you should know that. Cwobeel (talk) 17:27, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
I do. But this is not your regular content dispute. It's a "people need to read sources before they revert" incident. --bender235 (talk) 17:31, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
 • The two of you, stop fighting. Bender235 should have added the authority link as a ref to it - maybe he doesn't know how to cite that as such. Rules are meant to prevent disruption, bickering about some trivial detail like this is a waste of time. If its sourced, I trust there is no issue. Correct? ChrisGualtieri (talk) 17:30, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Correct. --bender235 (talk) 17:31, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Not correct. Per WP:BLPPRIMARY: Exercise extreme caution in using primary sources. [...] Do not use public records that include personal details, such as date of birth, home value, traffic citations, vehicle registrations, and home or business addresses. Cwobeel (talk) 17:43, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Basically, this is a BLP. If the DOB is a notable issue, it should have been reported in secondary sources. A primary source is not suitable for this content. Cwobeel (talk) 17:45, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Its not a primary source, it is from the Library of Congress - if you have an issue with that, we are not going to work well together. It only took a few minutes to find and cite the claims with a few minor tweaks (for neutrality).ChrisGualtieri (talk) 17:48, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
I know it is from the LOC, I checked that. On the other hand, this being a BLP, don't we need a secondary source that attest to the notability of his DOB? The Library of Congress is a public record. Cwobeel (talk) 17:55, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
I'm sorry to interrupt, but could you guys maybe clarify this matter on, say Talk:Scott Lash, instead of my talk page? --bender235 (talk) 18:06, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Editing Against Consensus

If you're going to continue editing against consensus, can I at least build you a tool to do it in the best possible way? I already have a script that checks each webpage and replaces with PRLs if the HTTP/HTTPS pages are the same or very similar. It also records into a database each match/miss, so we can identify sites that are identical on both protocols.
If you could come onto #wikipedia-en connect and ping me, we can discuss this. 930913 ping 15:25, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Denzel Nkemdiche, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Junior (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hello! I have a problem with editing a page Leonid Chernovetskyi. I add the text: "In 2003 he initiated a law on" The protection of public morality ". This law regulates a circulation of information products, which negatively affects public morality and bans turnover of items and products of pornographic nature". It remains on the page, but does not appear when you save it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.134.122.136 (talkcontribs)

Hi Bender235! In edit to Silvino Barsana Agudo, you changed |url=http://www.youtube.com... to |url=https://www.youtube.com.... However, since your edit summary links to a discussion on VPP which states that the consensus was to use "protocol relative links for sites that support both HTTP and HTTPS", shouldn't the reference be changed to |url=//www.youtube.com... instead? Proposed deletion of Brian Norwood

The article Brian Norwood has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The only reference is self-sourced.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Citation templates

Hi Bender, just a reminder, re: this, that citation templates shoudn't be added to articles that already use a consistent style. See WP:CITEVAR. The added problem with these templates is that you can't see the URL in edit mode, so if you're checking sources while editing they can be a bit of a nuisance. Best, SlimVirgin (talk) 16:54, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

That corner case (editor who checks the sources only when editing) seems highly unplausible. Also, Template:Wayback isn't a citation template. Anyhow, I'm not starting a fight over this. --bender235 (talk) 17:01, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
They're templates replacing manual references, and it's not at all a corner case, Bender. I copy-paste URLs all the time when I'm copy-editing and checking sources. When they're not there, it means I have to come out of edit mode and click on the link. It's an extra step, and when you're copy-editing you might have to do it many times in a row, so being able to see URLs in edit mode is very helpful. SlimVirgin (talk) 17:07, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Following that logic, you could also argue that we should replace every New York City with New York City. One step less if you want to follow the link in edit mode, is it not? --bender235 (talk) 17:11, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
I know what to do with New York City in edit mode if I want to read the article: I copy-paste it into the search box. Similarly, I know what to do with a URL if I want to read a source: I copy-paste it into my address bar. But with these templates, I have no idea what to do in edit mode to find the source, so I have to come out of edit mode and click.
If your aim is to add https to the URL, it would make sense just to do that. With the templates, the cost is that you lose information in edit mode, but there doesn't seem to be a benefit to offset that cost. SlimVirgin (talk) 17:38, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Wayback makes wholesale changes to the URIs much easier. For instances, if Internet Archive switches links from http://wayback.archive.org/ to http://web.archive.org/ (which they did, btw). Also, the template automatically extracts the time when a page was archived. Most users forget to do that when they just add . That's two benefits that (in my mind) outweight the "hassle" of not being able to copy-paste the URI in the browser address bar. --bender235 (talk) 17:46, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I see your point about the URL changes and the date being added, although I'm a minimalist when it comes to citations so I tend not to add the latter myself. Anyway, I hope you'll give some consideration to the argument about being able to see URLs in edit mode, and thanks for being so patient. SlimVirgin (talk) 00:11, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Edathy

Dear Bender, first of all I wish to thank you for deleting everything I had written regarding the scandal around Edathy. Very nice. But you have more or less maintained what I was wanting to say. Now I want to learn ... Why did you delete all the explanations I gave? I was not writing anything from my own views. I was writing about a press report that I happened to see online. I felt I must show press opinion regarding international pornography even when powerful persons like Edathy are involved. Why did you delete that reference altogether? Could that reference not be maintained even as a note? Even established universities are accepting online news archives as useful (even if not scholarly) resource. Then why did you entirely delete my input? If you don't guide me, I may continue to make such mistakes. So please explain. Arghyan Opinions (talk) 04:26, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

I barely deleted any of your addition. I just rephrased some sentences. --bender235 (talk) 06:30, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

This looked cool

Hey Bender, this looked like a cool edit, but the HTTP Secure page reads like gibberish to me, so can you explain in really simple words (lol) what you did, how it is done, why it's a good idea and how I can learn to do it too? Montanabw(talk) 21:25, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Well, in this particular edit I just replaced a raw link with YouTube. A side effect of this is that it links to https://www.youtube.com instead of http://www.youtube.com, which means the HTTP connection is encrypted and thus not vulnerable to eavesdropping, such as this.
How can you do this, too? For starters, you could just implement YouTube where ever you find a raw YouTube link. Or, you do it the way I did, which as scanning a large number of articles with AWB. --bender235 (talk) 22:41, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
But how did you get the number to appear? How do you find id numbers? Montanabw(talk) 20:10, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
I'm not sure I know what you mean. What number? --bender235 (talk) 20:11, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
Oh, I see, it was the id number of the you tube link (in that example 8T3AcvnEuMw), I guess it works similarly to Flickr links, never mind... I think I get it now. Montanabw(talk) 05:28, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

Request for comment

As someone who has edited the article Asian American this year, I am seeking your input on a proposed change to remove a reference to epicanthic eyefolds. This topic has prompted discussion in 2009, 2010 and most recently in 2013.

There's a fine line between being WP:BOLD and subverting WP:CONSENSUS. Given the history of this topic, I'm hoping that a robust discussion, for the record, would improve the article whether this reference stays or goes. Ishu (talk) 13:39, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

My time is rather limited right now as I'm attending Wikimania, but I might have a look at it later. --bender235 (talk) 15:18, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

Jack Hargreaves

Dear Bender235. You've changed a possessive version of Hargreaves in this article from Hargreaves' to Hargreaves's. How to indicate a possessive in names (and nouns) ending in 's' is debated among grammarians. Some say James's, others James'; ditto Charles' or Charles's. Most say both are correct, but I have never heard or read of anyone saying or writing Hargreaves's. I suggest there is enough ambiguity on this subject for it to be reasonable to revert to Hargreaves' as common usage. If you're keen to keep Hargreaves's go ahead. It is not incorrect! I am Hargreaves' stepson, but in Wiki that represents a primary source on which you cannot rely (:)). Regards, Simon Simon Baddeley (talk) 21:22, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

I was actually following the recommendation from White and Strunk's Elements of Style, which advises to always use "'s". --bender235 (talk) 06:55, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
... 'always' use "'s"! White and Strunk wrote a vade mecum welcomed by a generation of didacts, and imposed on a generation of their students. Some ninety years after Elements of Style was published Geoffrey K. Pullum remarked that 'The book's toxic mix of purism, atavism, and personal eccentricity is not underpinned by a proper grounding in English grammar. It is often so misguided that the authors appear not to notice their own egregious flouting of its own rules ... It's sad. Several generations of college students learned their grammar from the uninformed bossiness of Strunk and White, and the result is a nation of educated people who know they feel vaguely anxious and insecure whenever they write however or than me or was or which, but can't tell you why.' Pullum, Geoffrey K. (April 17, 2009). "50 Years of Stupid Grammar Advice". The Chronicle of Higher Education. 55 (32). Simon Baddeley (talk) 17:05, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Okay, nevermind. --bender235 (talk) 20:43, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
...but I appreciate your work on other corrections. Hope we meet again on Wiki. Do you know the best-selling book Eats, Shoots & Leaves? Its sales showed how much popular interest there is in English grammar. Simon Baddeley (talk) 09:31, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Heard of it, but never read it. I have Zinsser's On Writing Well, which is more writing style and less grammar, though. --bender235 (talk) 09:46, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for introducing him to me. Sounds an interesting guide. Simon Baddeley (talk) 07:44, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

http or https

Hi, you seem to be going against the consensus on your linked village pump discussion; the decision was to use protocol-relative URLs for sites that support both http and https, but your adobe.com links are not protocol-relative: 1 2 3. These are just the examples that showed up on my watchlist, it's likely that there are more. -- intgr [talk] 09:31, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Protocol-relative links aren't useful. We should use HTTP Secure where ever a Website offers it. There was mostly uneducated opposition against this in the VPP, like performance issues that do not exist. As was pointed out in recent Wikimania, Wikipedia is commited to its readers' privacy and security. That's why this switch is only the right thing to do. --bender235 (talk) 09:51, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Well changing links to https is OK to me personally. I thought you had simply made a mistake.
I find it disingenuous to imply in your edit summary that there's a village pump consensus for the edits you're making, but your edits are acting against the proposal and consensus -- as far as I can tell this was even your own proposal. Please don't do that. And calling viewpoints you disagree with "uneducated" just adds insult to injury. -- intgr [talk] 11:15, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
I feel your concerns, but most of the opposition was in fact due to lack of knowledge. It's not about viewpoints, it's about facts. And apart from that, Wikipedia is a highly popular website. If we can help people not to fall victim of scams or download trojans by simply linking to https://get.adobe.com/en/flashplayer/ instead of the HTTP version, we should do that. --bender235 (talk) 13:24, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
I understand your motivation, but you cite Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)/Archive 111#As WP uses HTTPS, should (some) external links, too? which holds that such changes are only appropriate where a target site only supports HTTPS. It does not seem appropriate to cite that page for sites which support both. If you strongly believe that that decision was based upon faulty data and ignorance, then the appropriate course would be to request that it be modified in light of your facts. --Bejnar (talk) 22:50, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
The links I'm changing are either to websites that support only HTTPS, or maintain HTTP support while explicitly asking people to link to them via HTTPS only (such as archive.org). --bender235 (talk) 23:06, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
I see that you do believe strongly in acceding to archive.org's request. In which case, (1) don't cite an inapposite policy (if it is a policy) and (2) work to change the former consensus via appropriate forums. --Bejnar (talk) 15:12, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
I don't think this "find consensus first" rule applies to everything. What I'm doing is basically low-level maintenance: fixing external links that have changed. If I was changing http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0013-1954%28199002%2921%3A1%3C83%3AAWPROL%3E2.0.CO%3B2-8 to http://www.jstor.org/stable/3482220 (which, by the way, I also do) just because the structure of incoming links to JSTOR changed, I wouldn't need prior consensus either, would I? Changing http://archive.org to https://archive.org is harming no one. --bender235 (talk) 15:54, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

Atlantis

Agreed. Ramage is my 'goto' book on my shelves. And a lot older than the Russian book - my copy says 1978. I presume the editor really doesn't know the literature, although why he would think something this century is the source of everything... Dougweller (talk) 08:45, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

 • You both do not know the literature and history. In anwiki even no article about this man: Zhirov N.F. But he is the founder of atlantology as a science. He wrote two fundamental works of Atlantis (1957 and 1964). The fact that translation from Russian made later nothing says.

--Kolchak1923 (talk) 19:56, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Your amusing notion of "Atlantology as a science" notwithstanding, this man (Zhirov) is completely irrelevant in historiography and philology, particularly the one concerning Plato's works. Throughout history there have been a lot of weird "Atlantologists", from Le Plongeon to Cayce. None of which belong in a credible encyclopedic article on Atlantis. --bender235 (talk) 22:32, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
You just do not know what the Soviet Union during the edition of the works. Unknown at that time to issue just would not give censorship. And his work in 1964 written all the other works of our time. That's why I think that it should be in the article. Read it for yourself and decide: is true solution. --Kolchak1923 (talk) 23:27, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm not quite sure I understand what you're trying to tell me. But as a matter of fact, this Zhirov book is not a "standard work" on Atlantis, or Plato, for that matter. --bender235 (talk) 10:12, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Possible. Since the translating of the case through Google. Zhirov investigated the problem of Atlantis complex, using 170 sources available at the time (and in philosophy, and history, and geography, etc.)--Kolchak1923 (talk) 13:43, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
That sounds like nonsense. There's only one source on Atlantis: Plato. --bender235 (talk) 18:34, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
I was talking about modern scholars writing characters on this topic. Plato wrote a little... --Kolchak1923 (talk) 07:46, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
See, a survey through modern Atlantis literature is neither innovative nor unique. We got enough of such surveys in the article already. --bender235 (talk) 12:58, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Deletion of Universal Ethics

Hi Bender 235, why did you delete the paragraph “Universal Ethics” in the Golden Rule article (Edition Sept.13, 2014) ? The modification of the Golden Rule it contains is fundamental since it is avoiding the contradictions and flaws of the other forms of the Golden Rule cited and criticized in the article (e.g. empathy as a prerequisite). Moreover, whereas the Golden Rule is explained in Global Ethics, Bahá'í Ethics, Buddhism Ethics etc. etc., the Universal Ethics concept is entirely absent. Thank you

Per this edit, thanks for doing it by hand instead of via AWB. Normally I wouldn't mind AWB's source reshuffling, but in articles whose sources are formatted like they are here it is important to keep the alphabetization intact so later editors can easily locate the reffed sources. It's supposed to be a more user-friendly way of sourcing since the position of the sources in the raw wikicode more closely mirrors the position of the sources in academic papers. Who knows if that's true. Anyway thanks. -Thibbs (talk) 05:46, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

No problem. --bender235 (talk) 05:52, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Afd protocol

I see that you have added the Rick Lindquist article for discussion at Afd, without an edit summary. The guidance at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion indicates that when so listing one should: Link to the discussion page in your edit summary: Adding Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/NominationName. Probably just a momentary oversight. --Bejnar (talk) 16:26, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Oh, didn't know that. I thought the link on top of the article in questions was enough. But okay, next time I know. Thanks. --bender235 (talk) 16:48, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

New article help

Hello, Bender235!

I'm rather new to creating wikipedia articles from scratch. I usually just try to add to existing articles and patrol for vandalism/bias in stories. I'm wanting to write some articles about entertainment in Las Vegas and want to do so in compliance of wikipedia's rules and regulations so that they are not biased and factually accurate. I'm a bit intimidated though when it comes to referencing sources (not that there aren't any in the copy of the articles I'd like to submit, rather, I'm not sure how to best attribute them and format those attributions into wikipedia.) Would you be willing to help me develop some articles and properly build them so as to comply with wikipedia's standards? I really appreciate your time and attention!!!

Keep up the good work!

If you mean whether I could fix your citation style, well then, yes, I could sure do that (just tell me the articles afterwards). But if you're not to creating Wikipedia articles, you might want to have a look at the Wikipedia:Article wizard. --bender235 (talk) 18:26, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Mayfield Workman

The article Mayfield Workman has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Speedy deletion nomination of Mayfield Workman

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Fuck her right in the pussy

Bender, that we're not censored doesn't mean we have to stick this kind of language in article space. Is it necessary? Hardly. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 18:19, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Wikipedia does not care "about the language" or what people might feel about a certain statement. Wikipedia states facts. Uncensored facts. We state what Winston verifiably yelled. Without any prudish concealment or ambiguity. Because what does "an obscenity" mean? That could be anything. And just like we state "Jameis Winston plays quarterback at Florida State" instead of "Jameis Winston is some football player", we should be clear in this case, too. --bender235 (talk) 18:35, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
Wikipedia does care. And this is a BLP. You can be as dickish as you like about this, but UNCENSORED does not mandate direct quotes. It's a matter of editorial decision, where you are conveniently forgetting that we're dealing with a BLP. Your comparison is prima facie nonsensical--unless you don't know what "quarterback" means or what FSU is in terms of a football school. Drmies (talk) 18:39, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Stanley Fischer

Hi Bender, I am new to this, older, and not a techie. Please forgive me if my communication format does not comply with your requested format. I am wondering why, on Stanley Fischer's Bio, his Vice Chairmanship at Citigroup 2002-2005 was left out of the bio listing, between his IMF service and the Bank of Isreal. There is an obvious gap between 2001 and 2005 but his Citigroup job was identified 2002-2005 in the text under banking career. I think this should be included in the Bio chronology as this is part of his career, jobs, and very important. Given the professional revolving door between the banking industry and the Fed, etc., I think this missing detail is very, very relevant and should be updated. Thank you! AnneRe AnneRe (talk) 19:32, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Anne, and welcome to Wikipedia! Unfortunately, this is not the right place to address this issue. Please leave a message on the talk page of Stanley Fischer's article, and also consider provide a reliable source for your claim. Thanks. --bender235 (talk) 19:51, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Traverse City West High School pagemove

The school's own website uses "Senior" in its name. Could you clarify the rationale for moving the actual article from Traverse City West Senior High to Traverse City West High School. (I don't see an edit-summary or talkpage comment either?) DMacks (talk) 20:24, 21 December 2014 (UTC)

The school's website didn't load when I checked. Google return just "Traverse City West High School". We could use "Traverse City West Senior High School" as well, if you fancy. Just "Traverse City West High" was not enough by our naming conventions. --bender235 (talk) 01:05, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

--bender235 (talk) 11:28, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
