Pinta (yacht)

Hi,

I'm new to Wikipedia; hence not into all details. I have created the page "Pinta (yacht)" and see your comments on it. I think I get the high-level idea about the issues, but I'm a little confused why you link to the Talk page, as it is empty. Can you guide me a little more about what I need to do?

Rgds,

Hello, yes sorry the talk page being empty. Those templates automatically link to the article talkpage, but I just haven't got around to adding anything to it yet. Basically, all that is needed is a good copy edit to remove or reword the language that shows Pinta in a favorable light. Because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, it has to try and remain neutral about the subjects it discusses. We have a policy on this subject which you can see at WP:NPOV. If you could give the article a copy edit to make it more 'neutral' that would be great. Follow the blue links on those 3 templates (on the article) to find out more about writing style on Wikipedia and how to avoid peacock words. Once that is done, the tags can be removed. Hope that helps :) Pol430 talk to me 22:44, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Template:Anticon

Hi, I see that you reviewed and approved Template:Anticon. Please note that per the guide Wikipedia:Navigation templates, non-links/unlinked text (a major part of this navbox) do not belong in a navbox.

Unfortunately, this templates creator (seemingly a rotating anonymous IP) has been edit warring this template/the articles which it has been included in. memphisto 10:24, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

It struck me that most of the text linked somewhere? Please note that AfC is not a comprehensive review service -- that would be contrary to the spirit of a free encyclopaedia that anyone can edit. AfC is mechanism to allow ip editors to create pages they would otherwise be unable to create. If you believe the navbox is not required, list it at XfD. Pol430 talk to me 10:35, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
You will find that over 50% of the navbox comprised non-links, including all of the 'Compilations' section. However, a few non-links/red links in a fully populated navbox would be acceptable. I don't really have an opinion on the validity of this template, just that it would have been best if the issues were corrected by the templates creator before it was approved. memphisto 11:07, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

JBH Logistics Northwest

I've been busting my butt to make this page work out and now I've been denied 2 times. The first time I could understand why I was denied. Your site is confusing for the average user and I wasn't clear on how to use references. But the second time I spent hours researching how to properly use references and was excited to get it right. Well I was not right, two times in a row. So....if you could explain to me exactly what I did wrong and how to fix it, I would really appreciate it. I'm tired of wasting time here in the effort to get nowhere. Thank you for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmarcotte2004 (talkcontribs) 14:43, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi, the problems with this submission are that 1) it is written like a corporate profile: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a directory site, or venue for any other kind of indiscriminate information. 2) It is promotional in nature, which violates our policy on neutral point of view. 3) Most importantly, it is not clear why this company is any more significant or important that any other company. We can only accept submissions about notable companies. While you have listed 4 sources, it is not clear what those sources have to say about this company. You need rewrite the generic company profile and write something that tells us about this company, its history, and why it is more impotent than other logistics companies -- has it won major awards? Has someone else written about the company in detail, in reliable secondary sources? If so, what did they say? For more information about what Wikipedia considers a 'notable company' to be, see WP:CORP. Hope that helps. Pol430 talk to me 16:05, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Michael Jackson Info Box

hey man, can i ask what i've been editing is wrong and if you want sources put on the information i have added please just ask. thanks, sorry for any trouble i've caused. MJKingofMusic (talk) 17:47, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

The issue is that you have added info that is controversial and have not linked to a reliable source. Several other editors have asked you to discuss changes that are potentially controversial before making them. Your repeated changes without first reaching agreement with others is being viewed as disruptive. Situations like this are known as edit wars and they are not a good thing. Also, you are leaving edit summaries which suggest you feel you 'own' this article; for example: "Please contact me if you are going to edit this, thanks". Nobody owns Wikipedia pages, an article is a collaborative effort between numerous editors, not just the vision of one person. Please stop making unilateral changes and discuss with other editors at the article talk page so that you can reach agreement first. Pol430 talk to me 17:57, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

sorry, i'm new at this, but i've posted new sections on michael jacksons talk page, but no one responds they just change it back or edit it the way they want with no references. MJKingofMusic (talk) 18:06, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

That's Ok, The MJ article is (or was) a Featured Article. That means that it has been carefully reviewed by a group of experienced editors to make sure everything is accurate and well written. Wikipedia has lots of complicated polices and guidelines which usually seem confusing to new editors. One of the things Wikipedia insist on is that all information is verifiable. That means if you are going to add new information, the community expects you to prove that the information is accurate by adding a citation to a reliable source -- YouTube is not considered a reliable source. Also, with regard to the instruments: A group of editors had a conversation a while ago that decided they would not list any instruments that MJ played because they felt there was not enough evidence to support that information. Because those editors made a consensus before, that means that you should not change this information unless other members of the Wikipedia community agree that you can. You can find the latest discussion about instruments here. Pol430 talk to me 18:18, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

you've just changes his other known aliases. could you please explain why. he was never called michael joe jackson. MJKingofMusic (talk) 18:08, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

All I did was undo your edits, it would appear that someone else wrote that Michael Joe Jackson, was one of his legal aliases. Pol430 talk to me 18:18, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Your userpage

As I said before I like your userpage a lot. Would you mind if I made a few tweaks to make some of the text more readable? You can revert my changes if you don't like them. Pine 09:18, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Sure, go ahead. If you mean that my username blends into the background of the image, I've been meaning to do something about that for a while. Edit away! Pol430 talk to me 09:21, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
OK, done. How do you like it? Pine 09:47, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
Hmmm, not so much to be honest. I preferred the text placement before and I like my username to match my signature. I will try and adjust the color hues to make it stand out more against the image. Also, I sometimes change the image to there are often different backgrounds against my username. The spelling of Userboxen is deliberate. It's a kind of Wikipedia joke. Pol430 talk to me 10:02, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
:( You may need a different backround, then. Pine 10:04, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I've changed to a previous image I have used. What do you think? Pol430 talk to me 10:12, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
The name contrast is good now. The only problem is the quote in the lower left corner. Pine 10:24, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
I think I prefer the waterfall. I'll play around with the colors of my username to try and get more contrast. Pol430 talk to me 10:26, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

I've changed the colors of my username to give a bit more contrast. I've made the same changes to my sig. Pol430 talk to me 10:39, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

That still hurts my eyes. Could you align your username in the center of the image on the lighter sky background? Pine 10:46, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
Tried it under preview and it just looked odd. I'll leave it the way it is for now thanks, I might have another play around when I have more time. Pol430 talk to me 10:56, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 54 people who signed up this drive, 32 copy-edited at least one article. Last drive's superstar, Lfstevens, again stood out, topping the leader board in all three categories and copy-editing over 700 articles. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We were once again successful in our primary goal—removing the oldest three months from the backlog—while removing 1166 articles from the queue, the second-most in our history. The total backlog currently sits at around 2600 articles, down from 8323 when we started out just over two years ago.

Coodinator election: The six-month term for our third tranche of Guild coordinators will be expiring at the end of June. We will be accepting nominations for the fourth tranche of coordinators, who will also serve a six-month term. Nominations will open starting on June 5. Insecurity Insight

Hi Pol430! I have just received your message on my profile's talk section and noted that you have temporarily removed the article Insecurity Insight. First of all, let me stress that I have put lots of effort into writing this article, adhering to the 'spirit of Wikipedia' and its rules. As I have an affiliation with the organization, I have added the 'Notable Wikipedian' tag to its page. While developing the article, Gtwfan52 kindly pointed out a couple of it flaws, e.g. the problem of using content from http://insecurityinsight.org/history.html. I have been in touch with the organization's representative who confirms that the content on this page can be considered as being in the public domain (it is history). On behalf of the organization, I have added a statement under the article's talk page. I kindly ask you to now help me revert the page to its previous version. Many thanks for your help and rapid response. Griberg 21:32, 04 June 2012 (UTC+2).

Hello, thanks for your message. I'm sure you have worked hard on the article and that your intentions are honorable. What you may not be aware of is that it's a matter of Wikipedia policy to presume copyright exists, unless it is specifically disclaimed on the source. The web-page http://insecurityinsight.org/history.html has a copyright logo at the bottom which suggests they retain all rights to the text. I appreciate you are telling me that you are connected with this organization, but Wikipedia requires evidence that you are an official representative. The best way to proceed if you wish to retain the history section would be to get the copyright holder to contact an OTRS agent via email. You can find out more about this process at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. Unfortunately, until the permission to use that text has been officially received and actioned by an OTRS agent, I cannot restore the content. Pol430 talk to me 19:45, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
Hi again Pol430 and thank you for your rapid answer. If I understand correctly, you will revert the article once a representative of Insecurity Insight has confirmed that the content found under http://insecurityinsight.org/history.html is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0? If so, I will ask them to send an email using the template found under Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries to permissions-en@wikimedia.org. Please confirm this ASAP. Many thanks! Griberg 21:55, 04 June 2012 (UTC+2)
That's correct. Please note that you will not get an instant email response from the OTRS agents. Once the email is sent they will process the request and the OTRS agent will reinstate the article (or they normally do anyway). Please consider the points made by Orange Mike below. Copyright is not the only issue with article. Pol430 talk to me 20:05, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker)The other problem, and it is a major one, is that the organization itself is not considered a reliable source in many cases for information about itself, due to the obvious questions of conflict of interest and neutral point of view. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:00, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
Many thanks for your help here, much appreciated. I am well aware of the possible conflict of interest and that is the reason why I added the 'notable Wikipedian' tag on top of the article's talk page and encouraged others to contribute to the article. I have now asked one of the organization's founders, Christina Wille (mentioned in the article), to send an email to the OTRS agents. Is there anything else I need to do regarding the copyright issue, or will the article we put back automatically once they have 'treated' the email? Cheers, Griberg 22:14, 04 June 2012 (UTC+2)
The "notable Wikipedian" tag (actually, nowadays we use Category:Connected contributors) is used for a notable individual human being who is also an editor here in Wikipedia, such as David Langford or Mitch Kapor. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:38, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
Hi again! The email has now been sent, but no changes has been made to the article. Now when the content is properly licensed, can you please help me revert the article to its last version? If there is simply a delay for this type of situations, I'll happily standby :-) Many thanks for helping out. Griberg 21:19, 05 June 2012 (UTC+2)
Hi, yes there will be a delay, don't worry, once the copyright permission is received the article can be unblanked -- the OTRS agent will probably do this. The OTRS agents are all volunteers, as is almost everybody on Wikipedia. There are some other issues to address, we will deal with those separately. Pol430 talk to me 19:44, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
All right, thanks a lot :-) Griberg 21:54, 04 June 2012 (UTC+2)
Sorry for bugging you with this, but the article Insecurity Insight has still not been reverted to the previous version. Given the time and effort I put in here, I'm a bit frustrated (although I understand the copyright issue). I have double checked with the organization and the Wikipedia crew (whoever they are) should have received the email several days ago. Is there anyway you can help to speed up this process, or will it simply take the time it takes? Many thanks for helping me out - appreciated! Cheers, Griberg 13:57, 09 June 2012 (UTC+2)

I'm afraid I can't help speed things up for you. All the people who answer the emails are volunteers and there is no deadline on Wikipedia. Although, it seems strange that it is taking this long -- it sometimes takes 3-4 days, but it is now 5. If the person from the organization is sure they have sent the email to the correct address you could try contacting Sphilbrick (talk · contribs) who is an OTRS agent that often deals with copyright permissions. Try leaving a message at his talk page to see if he can check if the request has been received. Pol430 talk to me 12:11, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Now handled.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 12:14, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Danny Zuker Page submission

I'm not sure what I'm missing from the submission for this page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by CircusBrain (talkcontribs) 17:56, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

A certain sense of sincerity!? We're not going to accept a one line submission that looks more like a joke than an attempt to write an encyclopedia article. I suggest you write something about him in the Modern Family article; but not "Danny Zuker is devastatingly handsome graduate of Newhouse (class of 2012) with piercing green eyes and a strong jaw, he was born in 1964 and is follicly challenged. While not as impressive he has also "won" an "Emmy" for his "work" on Modern Family." which is just silly... Pol430 talk to me 18:41, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

re: Title of Catherine Duchess of Cambridge

Catherine must be the Princess William etc... since, she does not posses the titles in her own right but through her husband.

Burkes Peerage states: "There have been nine duchesses in their own right from Margaret Duchess of Norfolk, so created by King Richard II on 19 September 1397 , to H.R.H Princess Arthur of Connaught, who is Duchess of Fife of the creation of 1900(Burkes Peerage, Baronetage and Knightage, 1937, p.6)".

Further under the title Duchess of Fife: Duchess of Fife (H.H. Princess Alexandra Victoria Alberta Edwina, Louise) and Countess MacDuff, co. I would have made an edit change but you asked that no one edit the page. I was just reading and noticed you wrote "You can use the green 'AGF' link in cases where the user clearly tried to improve the article, but actually made it worst."

(Somewhere else I noticed you wrote: "Rest assured that as long as you do the right thing, your attacker will come off worst in the long run." I think this is the same mistaken substitution of "worst" for "worse.")

I hope this is helpful to you. Philebritite (talk) 21:17, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi, worst means the same thing as worse. It's an older form of the same word. Traditionally, I have used worst—this is the more common form in my cultural background. Recently, I have tried to substitute it with 'worse', because this is the preferred form in modern usage and in most writing-style guides. Unfortunately, old habits die hard and do slip back to 'worst' sometimes. Feel free to correct any such errors and thank you for pointing it out. Pol430 talk to me 15:48, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Pol430, I've just submitted a new revision for Summa Metaphysica, but I couldn't really see it after I sent it. I hope you get to view the new improved article sent today. Please check for me. Thank you very much for your assistance in this matter. DavidBirnbaum (talk) 18:33, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Page Triage newsletter

Hey all. Some quick but important updates on what we've been up to and what's coming up next :).

The curation toolbar, our Wikimedia-supported twinkle replacement. We're going to be deploying it, along with a pile of bugfixes, to wikipedia on 9 August. After a few days to check it doesn't make anything explode or die, we'll be sticking up a big notice and sending out an additional newsletter inviting people to test it out and give us feedback :). This will be followed by two office hours sessions - one on Tuesday the 14th of August at 19:00 UTC for all us Europeans, and one on Wednesday the 15th at 23:00 UTC for the East Coasters out there :). As always, these will be held in #wikimedia-office; drop me a note if you want to know how to easily get on IRC, or if you aren't able to attend but would like the logs.

I hope to see a lot of you there; it's going to be a big day for everyone involved, I think :). I'll have more notes after the deployment! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 19:58, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

New Pages newsletter

Hey all :)

A couple of new things.

First, you'll note that all the project titles have now changed to the Page Curation prefix, rather than having the New Pages Feed prefix. This is because the overarching project name has changed to Page Curation; the feed is still known as New Pages Feed, and the Curation Toolbar is still the Curation Toolbar. Hopefully this will be the last namechange ;p.

On the subject of the Curation Toolbar (nice segue, Oliver!) - it's now deployed on Wikipedia. Just open up any article in the New Pages Feed and it should appear on the right. It's still a beta version - bugs are expected - and we've got a lot more work to do. But if you see something going wrong, or a feature missing, drop me a note or post on the project talkpage and I'll be happy to help :). We'll be holding two office hours sessions to discuss the tool and improvements to it; the first is at 19:00 UTC on 14 August, and the second at 23:00 on the 15th. Both will be in #wikimedia-office as always. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 15:58, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Help from Pol430

Hi... you accepted a page I created titled "Hoopla Worldwide" on February 11, 2012 and a user named Tomwsulcer (who also put up a AFB on a another page I created called "Jonathan Hay (publicist)" and he has tagged the article that you accepted with 4 different tags (advert, pov, undue and primary sources). Granted, I have made some changes with this article during the last few months, but still staying within the parameter. If you could look at both pages "Hoopla Worldwide" (the one you accepted) and "Jonathan Hay (publicist)" that would be wonderful. Thanks in advance. Causeandedit (talk) 00:29, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Help with editing

Hello Pol430,

I am having some problems getting an article edited to a good standard and unfortunately the editor who has attended to my contribution either deletes my contribution without helpful comment or appears adverserial. I have been very polite in my 'talk' and I have re-re-revisited my contribution, used citations and references to books rather than fan sites. The other editor has been very abrupt and frankly unhelpful. I have no wish to cause a drama but I would like someone else to look at my contribution http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Honda_PC50&oldid=511109048 and to tell me kindly how to put things right.

Thank you very much for your help,

Sidney SidneySideline (talk) 19:15, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi,

I have a problem with my edit on "http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spam_in_blogs&oldid=511523343". It was rejected. Maybe you can help me to understand why.

Thank you, Alex — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alextrout (talkcontribs) 07:44, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

GOCE mid-drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

  • Participation: Out of 37 people signed up for this drive so far, 19 have copy-edited at least one article, about the same as the last drive. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're almost on track to meet our targets for the drive. Great work, guys. We have reduced our target group of articles—August, September, and October 2011—by about 44%, and the overall backlog has been reduced by 58 articles so far, to around 2600 articles. The biggest difference between this drive and the previous one is a stronger focus on large articles, so total word counts are still comparable.
  • Don't forget about the Copy Edit of the Month contests! Voting for the August contest has been extended through the end of the month. You don't have to make a submission to vote!

Adopt-a-user

Hi Pol430. I'm leaving you this message because you have previously been involved as an adopter with Wikipedia's Adopt-a-user program. A clean-up of this program is currently underway, and as part of the process I am trying to find out who is and isn't still interested in remaining an adopter.

If you would prefer not to be part of the adoption program anymore, you need do nothing; when the overhaul of the project is completed your name will be removed from the list of active adopters. However, if you have current adoptees, an active adoption school or an interest in adopting in the near future, then please let us know by signing here.

If you want to remain in the project and can currently take on more adoptees, there is a serious backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user; it would be enormously helpful if you could take on one or two of the users there. Please do keep an eye on the project for upcoming changes, we could use your opinions and your help! Yunshui  09:15, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Page Curation newsletter

Hey Bellerophon. This will be, if not our final newsletter, one of the final ones :). After months of churning away at this project, our final version (apart from a few tweaks and bugfixes) is now live. Changes between this and the last release include deletion tag logging, a centralised log, and fixes to things like edit summaries.

Hopefully you like what we've done with the place; suggestions for future work on it, complaints and bugs to the usual address :). We'll be holding a couple of office hours sessions, which I hope you'll all attend. Many thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:00, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

Three questions on Alpins method entry

Hello.

I would most appreciate some information or a referral to the correct contact. I have 3 questions on an entry I worked on for the Alpins method of astigmatism correction:

1. Quite a bit of work has been done on the entry since you first accepted it. Is it possible to petition for a rating improvement (from C to B)?

2. Is it possible to petition for an upgrade in the importance scale (from low to medium, maybe) for the entry?

3. Is it possible to change the capitalization of the title page (from "Alpins method..." to "Alpins Method..."?

Thank you for your attention and consideration.

Best regards. --Keith Kcroes (talk) 00:08, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.

Again, it's been an honour. Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 12:05, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
