Admin edit

Hey. I've seen you plenty at DYK, and after looking though your contributions I was surprised to find out that you were not an administrator. If you'd like to be and think you're ready, I'd gladly nominate you at WP:RFA. Let me know of your decision. Wizardman 16:06, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

As I am often up late at night, when there is no one to update the DYKs promptly, sure, go ahead and nominate me. Of course, I am not shy about when I disagree with something stupid being done, so I may have some critics, but nothing ventured nothing gained.--Bedford 19:07, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Here you go, good luck. Wizardman 21:45, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I went and put it on the main RfA page. Keep an eye out for future questions. Wizardman 22:14, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sure thing. Thanks for the advice.--Bedford 22:24, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hey there, just FYI, I left you (along with quite a few other users) a couple of questions over at your RfA. It appears like you have a ton to answer, so take your time. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 22:57, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
So I've noticed. ;) I'll answer all questions, but not without thinking each one out.--Bedford 23:03, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Left ya quite a few more questions, you have done well so far on all the others, keep it up! Tiptoety talk 04:12, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and if you choose to change any of your answers, please do not change your first answer but instead strike it and write a new one under it. We have had a few issues with this in the past. Tiptoety talk 04:14, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sure thing, but let me get some sleep before I answer. It feels like bedtime now.--Bedford 04:31, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I know how that feels. Good night! Tiptoety talk 04:33, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations! And sorry, I was rather harsh with this edit summary; I didn't check to see who the author was, but anyway, I've made the same correction dozens of times and probably just snapped a little this time. My apologies, and good luck as administrator. Biruitorul (talk) 15:11, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I noticed that was a bit premature too - but I guess I was the first one. Biruitorul (talk) 15:12, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Drydock Number One, Norfolk Naval Shipyard edit

Hey, i didn't know that you followed up on Broad Ripple Park Carousel. Maybe i should watch more of the articles I create....

Anyhow, this visit to give u heads-up on brand new NHL article Drydock Number One, Norfolk Naval Shipyard. This is where the Merrimack was converted to the CSS Virginia ironclad. Have at it, if you like. doncram (talk) 00:00, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm busy this week, but I'll be sure to do it next week. Do you think you can find the one for Glendale Historic District in Glendale, Ohio?--Bedford 01:05, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Okay, good, whenever it suits you, about the Drydock article. About Glendale Historic District (Glendale, Ohio), I just visited and added standard NHL webpage link, NRHP text/photo document links. See Talk:Glendale Historic District (Glendale, Ohio) about incompleteness of the NRHP document, it would be great if you would collect a full copy and fix the reference. The article barely mentions Morgan's Raid that came through, I am betting that's what you're interested in describing more in the article, which would be great. Cheers, doncram (talk) 19:09, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sayler's Creek Battlefield available for you to develop if you like. Four NPS-owned NRHP photos fro 1936 available to illustrate the article (see its Talk page). Detail in sources could be used to develop Battle of Sayler's Creek also. I think there have been some other Civil War related sites in List of NHLs in VA that have been created fairly recently, but this one was created just today. doncram (talk) 14:23, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you missed one thing - you have to upload an exact copy of the commons image here on English Wikipedia. Only after that, you can protect it. Currently the image is totally vulnerable to vandalism. --BorgQueen (talk) 07:24, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Article Rating edit

Hi Bedford! I have a question, you can reply here or my talk page, I check both. Is it against the rules to rate article that you work on? For instance, I have contributed alot to Lost River (Indiana) and I reassessed it from a stub from to a start for wiki project Indiana. If it is against the rules I won't do that, or if there is another way I am supposed to go about i would like to know, but I never seen anything to explain how that works. Thanks Charles Edward 17:12, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've never heard anything against self-rating one's article, especially as Stub or Start. If I think I may too sentimental on an article, I may skip giving it an importance, but Classes are usually self-evident.--Bedford 17:20, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Portal:Indy selected article edit

What should we do with Portal:Indianapolis/Selected article/8, it's outdated now. Should we just replace it (I've been looking for a suitable replacement) or just update it. I'll leave that up to you to decide. Thanks. HoosierStateTalk 22:19, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

We'll update it.--Bedford 22:26, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK image protection edit

When updating DYK, make sure your read the instructions regarding image protection. Specifically, if the image is hosted on Commons, it must be uploaded here. If this is not done, it is possible for a vandalized version of the image to be uploaded at Commons and appear on the main page. Please ask me if you have any questions about how to do this. --- RockMFR 23:33, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Negro vs Black edit

Hello Bedford,

I see you made the PC change to Washington Irving. Since the quoted NYTimes article uses Negro, I feel that is the appropriate word to use, even if some do not understand how the term has changed since its use back then. Please join the discussion on the talk page.

Thanks.

DYK Picture selection edit

May I ask why you chose Annette E. Brown's picture over Jesse Jackson, Jr.'s. He is more notable. He has a higher quality WP article. He has a more interesting article. He has a higher quality image. He has a more interesting hook. It would seem his picture would be a better choice.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 04:14, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Honestly, it's because Brown's picture was easier to protect. I've had foul-ups protecting images originally in Commons; Brown's was in en.wikipedia, so it was easier, and since I'd be the one to update most likely, I chose her.--Bedford 04:28, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Then next time how about asking for help? Sorry to bop in here but a five-fold expansion? -—SusanLesch (talk) 05:00, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hey, if someone else wants to rotate the pics, let them feel free. This update is likely to last a while, due to admins being spare at the time it's due to be updated again.--Bedford 05:11, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

BY Draconis hook edit

Hi,

I noticed that you selected the first hook for BY Draconis, as opposed to the longer alternate hook (which the article creator mentioned as being more interesting). If the concern was length, I can suggest a shorter version of the alternate hook:

Would that be a better replacement? Black Falcon (Talk) 04:52, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm ... it just occurred to me that this version is also more technical and, thus, perhaps less likely to be meaningful to the average reader... Black Falcon (Talk) 04:54, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
That's why I didn't chose it. I thought the first would be more interesting to the general public, which is why I chose it.--Bedford 04:55, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
That makes sense. When I nominated the hook, I had already read all of the technical articles linked from it, so I forgot to consider that it might be less likely to be understood by readers. Black Falcon (Talk) 04:58, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

William Howard Taft National Historic Site edit

Hi -- got your note about William Howard Taft National Historic Site and you will have seen that i edited it some. thanks for letting me know. It could be a good example / test case for some discussion with WikiProject Protected areas about removing Protected areas infoboxes and categories for some of the U.S. National Park Service areas that do not preserve natural environment. This site had or has 3 acres, but being in-town it cannot preserve any natural area, and its primary purpose was obviously historical. I see that you replaced the Protected areas infobox by the NRHP infobox, and I further "upgraded" that to the new version NRHP2 now hereby in testing. I added back the visitation and area info that was in the Protected areas infobox, and now there is no less info than was there before.

Anyhow, could you clean up / wikify properly the references? As you see i started on it, but I think i may have messed up, there was one of the Lesson Plan ones which i can't find now. Again it would be useful to me to have a well-referenced NHS example, but this is hard to use now due only to the references. Thanks and nice job. It should be nearly ready to go on to Peer Review or Good Article review, I would think. doncram (talk) 23:44, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I purposely added the space after the ellipses (between them and "that") because DYK didn't follow WP:MOS#ellipses. This point was brought up by some WP:FA reviewers and I started a discussion on the discussion page. Would you please credit the nominators and creators for this round? I need to go. I can quickly do the rest of the article's talk pages. Let me know... Royalbroil 19:12, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Understood. I'll give the people credits.--Bedford 19:13, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your help in a major pinch! I wanted to spend only a few minutes on the update, and it took a whole hour. Two of the hooks had already been used before, so I had to scramble for more hooks. I reverted one of your credits so that they wouldn't be credited twice. I notice that you didn't sign that credit. I hope that you signed the rest, because it's customary for the creditor to sign. Royalbroil 19:32, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Except for someone who nominated two that made the update, I shouldn't have missed a signing (saw no need for two identical timestamps). If I did it to a different one, it would be muy curioso. --Bedford 19:35, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
