Categories on userfied articles
When dealing with categories like this, it's better to comment them out rather than delete them so they are more easily restored once the article is ready to be moved back to mainspace. Having to hunt through the article history to find them can take a while, especially if a lot of work has been done to the article since the cats were removed. - Firstly, the categories that people file userpages in aren't always good ones: I frequently find userpages "filed" in redlinked categories that don't exist at all, or duplicate categories (e.g. just today I came across one that had been simultaneously filed in "[Country] volleyball players", "Volleyball players" and "Volleyball") that a page shouldn't be left in, or other categories that would be inappropriate or incorrect even if the page were actually in mainspace — but I can't just leave bad categories on a page if that would just create future work to clean them up again if and when the page returns to mainspace, so I would have to spend several minutes on each page to investigate whether all of its categories were correct ones or not in order to determine which ones to keep and which ones to strip, because
- Secondly, the polluted category reports only run twice a week, which means by the time a new report runs I have hundreds of draft and user pages that have to be cleaned out all at once, because they have to be all cleaned out by the time the next report runs or else the size of the job will be even worse next time. So it's a job that already takes me a few hours as it is in the best case scenario, and would end up becoming a full-day project if I had to double or triple or quintuple the amount of time I spend on each individual page. I have to be able to get in and out of each page, fixing the problem and moving on, within no more than one minute per page maximum, and simply don't have the time to turn each individual page into a extended review of which categories are good and should just be disabled vs. which categories are bad and need to be removed, or an extended investigation of whether the page was previously a real article that got sandboxed after the fact, or was created in sandbox from the start.
- So if you want the page to have categories present on the page in disabled form from the start, you're totally free to do that — but since you're the creator/owner of pages in your own sandbox in the first place, it's your responsibility to be on top of disabling any categories you want there. You can't make it other people's responsibility to disable the categories for you, because those of us who clean up userpages in article categories have to deal with hundreds of such pages in one shot, and can't be expected to put more time into the job than the absolute quickest possible solution. - I've moved the conversation back here to avoid any confusion. The article was userfied only a couple hours or so before you removed the categories and before I even had time to look at it after it was moved, so all the categories were legit. Taking a few extra seconds to glance at the history to see if it was just moved to userspace is not a huge burden. We're all volunteers here, and I've been doing things here nearly as long as you have. If you don't want to do it, that's fine, but you're removing of the categories before I even had time to review it after it was userfied makes more work for me (and anyone else you do that to). November Articles for creation backlog drive
Hello Bearcat:
WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.
You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.
Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
