Beastie Bot edit

The bot works by looking for an article on wikipedia with the latin name of every and each species + subspecies on the red list. It follows redirects and checks that the page contains a taxobox with that same latin name (and no others). So, for example, it might look up Rhea americana, which redirects to Rhea (bird), but then it would leave the page unchanged because it's about two species. (two are listed in the taxobox)

I'd be a bit relucant to give away the code, mainly because using it would require re-scraping IUCN's web site (or for me to copy the copyrighted dump of the site). Also the code could use a bit of maintenance before being re-run.

I'd be interested in reworking the code for the Magyar wikipedia though, but might need some help with translations, and with having any differences in the taxobox template pointed out. —Pengo talk · contribs 23:29, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

My main issue currently is that I don't have a lot of time to work on it. And the code might take some time to adapt. The code is very simplistic in some ways, and I haven't written any more than what I need. For example I never made an index of all the species in the red list, so looking them up isn't easy (I simply go through all of them). This means that going through all taxobox'd articles and searching for their entry isn't currently possible without a bit of coding. There are easy enough solutions to this, but I haven't even had time to fix the simpler problems. I'm having a look through the code now and seeing what I can do. Having multiple translations also adds a bit code complexity. —Pengo talk · contribs 23:46, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Time_man_of_the_year_1958_Kruschev.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Time_man_of_the_year_1958_Kruschev.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. MECUtalk 03:00, 20 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Time Man of the year 1957Hunagarianfreedom fighter.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Time Man of the year 1957Hunagarianfreedom fighter.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 02:35, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested) edit

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:08, 11 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

thanks for the barnstar :-) I am glad to be of help to the Committee, and hope that the current page would be more useful to the general public; that was my main intention when I decided to work on it. Plugging the gaps – Wikimania report

Officially it is "bridging the gaps in knowledge", with Wikimania 2018 in Cape Town paying tribute to the southern African concept of ubuntu to implement it. Besides face-to-face interactions, Wikimedians do need their power sources.

Hackathon mentoring table wiring

Facto Post interviewed Jdforrester, who has attended every Wikimania, and now works as Senior Product Manager for the Wikimedia Foundation. His take on tackling the gaps in the Wikimedia movement is that "if we were an army, we could march in a column and close up all the gaps". In his view though, that is a faulty metaphor, and it leads to a completely false misunderstanding of the movement, its diversity and different aspirations, and the nature of the work as "fighting" to be done in the open sector. There are many fronts, and as an eventualist he feels the gaps experienced both by editors and by users of Wikimedia content are inevitable. He would like to see a greater emphasis on reuse of content, not simply its volume.

If that may not sound like radicalism, the Decolonizing the Internet conference here organized jointly with Whose Knowledge? can redress the picture. It comes with the claim to be "the first ever conference about centering marginalized knowledge online".
