Dissident Campaign Edits

Hello sir. I would liked to comment here on why I undid your edits to the page Dissident Irish Republican campaign. As with the page for WWII, the Oka Crisis, Operation Harvest, Loughgall Ambush, American Civil War, and Years of Lead (Italy), and many others, the flags are for illustrative purposes solely. No objection was raised there as to their neutrality, thus it I am confused why suddenly there is here.

The page said For example, with an English flag next to him, Paul McCartney looks like an "English singer-songwriter from Liverpool who was in the Beatles"; without the flag next to him, he looks like an "English singer-songwriter from Liverpool who was in the Beatles. This is not an individual; and as the afore-listed pages illustrate, others have done the same.

Those British bios

FWIW, it's been years since my 't-ban' from British/Irish articles expired. Furthermore, I haven't been trolling such articles since that time. Look not upon me, as the creature I was. GoodDay (talk) 22:38, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

Arriving to an article about someone from Northern Ireland and declaring "He's British because that's the sovereign state!" even though you're fully au fait with the nuances of NI, the existence of the Good Friday Agreement, etc? Charging for Wikipedia’s Services: a good idea?

Dear Sirs and Madams,

I am writing with a suggestion under “new topic” even though I suspect but it has been brought up numerous times By both staff and a loyal readers like myself. I would gladly pay $.99, $1.99, even $2.99 for a Wikipedia app. In order to be able to use this service. Asking for donations like a puppy dog PBS station is probably not working very well. In fact, whenever anybody Googles something it usually shows Wikipedia as the first choice. Thank you in advance, Fox news check chick 🐣

Travelling, so no access to a decent keyboard, NeilN. I see my revert was itself reverted. I'm baffled as to how the main and related Trump articles somehow bypass the norms of the rest of the encyclopedia and remove topical, well sourced relevant content; and someone can just call "RfC!" and keep something excluded for a month. Bizarre, and so easy to game. Shame. I'll keep away. BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 19:42, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Apologies

Hi Bastun

I have apologised to everyone else involved in the chat page sorry I missed you out. I went directly to the talk links of the people who had replied to me. I am very sorry I hadn't created a profile before I started editing and attempting to contribute to discussions I understand how that must have looked suspicious and I seem to have created widespread offence. As advised I am now attempting to discuss these in the appropriate place as suggested. I realise this is a sensitive subject and must draw in many crackpots I'm sure I must have seemed to be yet another. I am trying to make my edits using a windows phone and honestly don't believe any warning banners came up prior to my edit, sorry about that. I was trying to make an helpful suggestion and I am sorry you felt the need to close the discussion. If there is anything I can do my end to delete/redact or remove my misplaced suggestion please say and I will endeavour to do that. I have only been doing this for a few days. I wasn't trying to be a smart a$$ with my dab question I simply didn't know the abbreviation at the time.

Once again sorry I am trying my best to learn as quickly as I can

Hi Eimhin de Róiste, no problem and no apology necessary. I closed the discussion as you'd already been informed of the proper forum for Ireland-related renaming discussions and it didn't seem productive to leave the discussion open in other places. I feel your pain being restricted to editing on a phone - no fun! BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 13:31, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
Hi Bastun, I still seem to be blundering badly. I thought after a few misplaced contributions in Republic of Ireland talk/discussion area. I thought I was referred to the IECOLL area and I thought I was making a contribution to the debate there. I suspect my error this time was that thread was only oppose/support on a subject. I think I was inappropriately using it to try to discuss, is this right? I see again the area is closed and I even see users who contributed after me appear to have their contribution deleted. Could you please reply when you have a chance with a link (ideally) to where I could appropriately discuss my suggestion of Ireland (Republic of) and could I ask also for your feedback on this suggestion, I thought it was a good suggestion. I thought it better reflected the legal/constitutional reality and the common usage issue too, is it in some way the proposal of a loon? Using a Windows phone 📱 to edit I guess does put me in a mad man 😵 category. I do tell myself when it comes to the English language usage, History or politics I'm not a crazy, perhaps I'm wrong. I will attempt no further contributions until I hear back from you. On a different note I'm also fascinated by your user name and the spectacular characters/letters you have used, is that for phonetics/pronunciation (sorry I don't even know the correct term for that) just visually cool anyway. Eimhin de Róiste (talk) 09:11, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Greetings Eimhin de Róiste. You'll find the thread has not been deleted, it has been moved to a new discussion since the previous discussion had been closed. We don't add to old closed discussions, or usually to long left conversations, we try to add a new topic instead. So the conversation has been moved there. It's further down the same page Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ireland Collaboration#Move "Republic of Ireland" to "(Republic of) Ireland" – new discussion However you are unlikely to garner much support for this change. This topic gets discussed on a fairly regular basis and as yet no one has created a consensus for anything new. It's an old argument but right now ROI seems to be the best alternative. Until there is a substantial change in the situation of Ireland, it's unlikely to change. If it's something you really want to argue you'd be better off reading all the preceeding arguments and coming up with a reason why your suggestion better meets Wiki guidelines and Irish perspectives. There are a lot of Irish editors and we all feel strongly about our country being well represented on Wikipedia. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 11:06, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
(After edit conflict): Hi Eimhin de Róiste, now I'm a little confused :-) There were two sections on Talk:Republic of Ireland that were archived. Discussion for renaming Ireland-related articles should take place on WT:IECOLL, the project's Talk page. There's a section there where your proposal is still open and being discussed: that's "Republic_of_Ireland"_to_"(Republic_of)_Ireland"_–_new_discussion here. I think what may have happened (I don't have time right now to go through the page's history) is you started discussing your proposal in an old section of the page, and you or someone else moved then moved it to the new section, and possibly messed up the formatting a little? In any case, discussion is open and ongoing.
Somebody on my talk page some years ago exclaimed "Egads, Bastun" at me, using the odd characters, and I happily stole it for my signature! Regards, BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 11:27, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

Dealing with imperfect English

When one finds a comprehensible addition to an article where the content meets Wikipedia's standards of NPOV and verifiability, but which lacks perfect English grammar or style, please just fix it, instead of reverting merely for imperfect English, as you did here. That goes double when they're a new editor; we want to encourage them, not discourage them. (I added a welcome template to their talk page.) Mathglot (talk) 11:18, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

Eamon de Valera

I don't really understand how my contributions were not neutral? The only section I can see as being remotely seen as violating WP:NPV is:

De Valera's political beliefs evolved from militant Irish republicanism to strong social, cultural and economic conservatism. While being venerated as a messiah like figure within Fianna Fail, he has been characterised by a stern, unbending, devious demeanor. His roles in the Civil War have also portrayed him as a divisive figure in Irish history. Biographer Tim Pat Coogan sees his time in power as being characterised by economic and cultural stagnation, while Diarmaid Ferriter argues that the stereotype of de Valera as an austere, cold and even backward figure was largely manufactured in the 1960s and is misguided.

Which was not heavily modified. I only expanded information about his time in office and stated that he was a 'prominent' politician, a neutral world for a person who is notable in a certain field, which every person who has studied de Valera is. I never intended to cast any of my own political beliefs upon de Valera and the article itself and I will gladly remove any parts that you believe were not 'adequately sourced' and were not written from a 'neutral point of view'. I'm a firm believer in NPV and I would like to fix this issue. CnocBride | Talk | Contribs 23:24, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
