Username

edit

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: The name contains a word that is easily understood as a vulgarity ("Bitch"). After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

Thank you.

My main concern is with the word "Bitch" in your username; it can be all-too-easily misconstrued as an insult. -Jéské (Blah v^_^v) 01:48, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Awesomebitch, I am going to assume that you are here to help the encyclopedia. This username is likely to be blocked, as it may be offensive to other editors. My recommendation is for you to create a new account with an appropriate username and edit from it. Or, if you wish, you can have your username changed by a bureaucrat. HI there. Belated welcome to Wikipedia. I found your commentary here to be interesting & I'm inclined to agree with you. Having said that, leaving the message there is somewhat moot as that editor has now been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia - Alison 18:58, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wow, first time I disagree with Alison. I find the name "Awesomebitch" offensive too. It's probably best if you change it.RlevseTalk 23:12, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
It depends on how it's used, really. In the right context, usurping an epithet like "bitch" can be quite empowering. My pal CompilerBitch calls herself that, and she's a rocket scientist (ya, literally!). Having said that, hearing it being used against a woman by some guy really gets my goat! :( AGF and all that - Alison 00:29, 7 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
That's like saying "I'm a bitch and I can call myself that but you can't". It's wrong used either way. If you don't want to be called something, you shouldn't use it yourself. The username policy explicitly covers how they are perceived by others, so this name should be changed. RlevseTalk 00:44, 7 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

LOL - nope! :) I'm not the one with the issue here - Alison 02:12, 7 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I was here for some other random reason; I'm perhaps not in a position to make any judgement over whether the name's offensive, but I wanted to register a little surprise that people who know compilerbitch are everywhere! Marnanel (talk) 22:36, 25 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
