Hi Averymcinroy,

Here are some comments and suggestions I have in response to your draft article, and as required for ANTH 4730:

I think it’s an interesting topic, especially considering the federal government’s push to accelerate negotiations with First Nations after splitting Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada into two departments.

You might want to clarify what you mean when you say, “historically, this land is hard to define because there is no set area until hastings county was created”. The sentence seems to imply that the Mohawk Nation did not claim the land as their own before it was taken from them. The government acknowledged years ago that the land was never surrendered by the Mohawk of the Bay Quinte First Nation.

You write: “This claim regards to dispute of the land claim made in 1837 that displaced over 827 acres.” — I think this sentence is slightly ambiguous. The claim itself was only made in 1995, as you write in the previous sentence. The MBQ claim the land was taken from them, not ‘displaced’, in 1837.

I’m also not quite sure what you mean when you say the claim was submitted to Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (the government replaced ‘Indian’ with ‘Indigenous’) in 2007, since it would have been submitted in 1995, no? While I haven’t done much reading on the topic yet, I haven’t come across any articles or documents that say part of the land was returned to the MBQ in 2007.

I agree that it would be a good idea to include a section on the protests, since they seem to have generated a significant amount of attention and forced the issue into national media.

You could also mention that in 2013, a federal court ruled that former Minister Chuck Strahl had acted improperly when he refused to consider returning land that is currently owned by non-Indigenous folks in Hastings county to the First Nation.

Best of luck with the rest of the assignment.
