Just to review

To review, to make a new template, copy, paste and edit this link, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:INSERT_TEMPLATE_TITLE_HERE. I also recommend copying, pasting and editing a preexisting template to make the creation process a little easier.--Mr Fink (talk) 21:03, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

@Apokryltaros: Ok - I was thinking the title could be (small text on top) "part of a series on" and the title under it, "Primitive Fishes", and include a couple of subheadings (collapsable) starting with Osteoglossiformes (bony tongues), and another for Coelacanth, and one for Threatened and Endangered, and so on? We could even include the subheading, "Sustainability" which would include articles on habitat destruction, conservation and restoration efforts, and so on. I don't know how many WP articles are available to include on the various species, so we might want to make the subheadings somewhat broad in scope in the beginning, and grow it from there. What do you think? Atsme talk 21:23, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
Would it focused on living (and recently extinct) primitive fishes, or would it include extinct/fossil fish groups, too?--Mr Fink (talk) 01:34, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
I think we should start with living and recently extinct. There are so many different ways to categorize, I'm not sure where to begin. Subheadings using either morphology, or superorder, or order? Cartilaginous Fishes as one subheader - Bony Fishes as another, or jawless - ray finned - lungfish? I'm building the Template now - using an existing sidebar with collapsable lists. I'll ping when it's ready to start organizing. I was also wondering if you had any artwork we could use for the header of the template? Atsme talk 23:51, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
Not of recent or recently extinct primitive fish. Maybe we could use one of the sturgeon or coelacanth photos?--Mr Fink (talk) 01:01, 16 April 2014 (UTC):
Ok, the template is started. Template:INSERT_TEMPLATE_TITLE_HERE Please review and change whatever you feel needs to be changed. Atsme talk 02:16, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
I dickered with it abit, and we should change the template title to something like "primitive fish".--Mr Fink (talk) 03:08, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
Primitive fish would be singular. The template is "a series" on several different species of fish. I changed it to read "part of a series on Primitive fish species". Does that work? I think the next step is adding some categories, and also the code to add the template to the different pages. Atsme talk 03:52, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
PS - Need to do something different with the image, too - something more generic because it doesn't fit to have a picture of a gar on the sturgeon and paddlefish pages. Maybe a pencil sketch of 4 or 5 different species?? Atsme talk 03:56, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
I'll see what I can do.--Mr Fink (talk) 04:29, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Would Teleostei be considered "ancestral species" as are gars, bowfin, and sturgeons? Just thinking we should probably have a cut-off somewhere so the listings on the template doesn't become overwhelming. Atsme talk 13:10, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

I included Teleostei for some of its primitive members, like the bony-tongues.--Mr Fink (talk) 15:50, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
Ok, sounds like your area of expertise, so I'll leave it to you to add the links under that header.--Atsme talk 16:10, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
@Apokryltaros: I added a collage of primitive fishes, and moved the template to Template:Primitive_fishes. Not sure what else needs to be done. If you come up with a better photo, or artwork, feel free to change it. Atsme talk 02:25, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
So far so good, I will keep you informed.--Mr Fink (talk) 02:29, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Userspace

Hi Atsme, if you want to create Atsme/EditCounterOptIn.js in userspace, add the prefix 'User' to it, so it would be 'User:Atsme/EditCounterOptIn.js'. The only things which doen't have a prefix such as 'Talk:', 'Portal:', 'Template:' and so on are articles. G S Palmer was completely right to CSD it if it was in article space. Thanks, Matty.007 19:14, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Thank you, Matty.007 Go ahead and delete the page. I will make the necessary change. AtsmeWills talk 19:20, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
I can't delete it as I am not an administrator, but it will be deleted soon. Thanks, Matty.007 19:34, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Paddlefish

Two comments on your post on my talk page:

  • I would argue against merging American paddlefish into paddlefish. The former is an article for a single species, while the latter is the article for the entire family, covering one definitely extant species and one possibly extinct species (+ a number of fossil taxa). Of course the name is often shortened when working in a single region; e.g. if you're an American ichthyologist or fisher you can easily shorten the name, as you'll only ever come into contact with a single species. Obviously it is also quite easy to find citations using this short form when looking at the matter from a U.S./Canada point of view, including the primary authority on fish names in the region (Common and Scientific Names of Fishes from the United States, Canada, and Mexico by the American Fisheries Society). The source you included in the comment on my talk page is an authority, but secondary rather than primary when it comes to names. However, primary name sources with worldwide coverage exists for American/Mississippi paddlefish (e.g. FishBase & Fishes of the World). I have no preference for American paddlefish over Mississippi paddlefish. If someone suggests moving the page to the latter name, I'll stay out of that discussion. A third name in use is North American paddlefish (see google scholar), but this specification is redundant and I'm not aware of any primary name source that supports it.
Using a similar logic, President of the United States could be merged into President. After all, in the United States the vast majority of cases where someone says or writes "President" (without any further specification) it's about the U.S. President. This works perfectly well when dealing with the retricted scope of a single region, but wikipedia is worldwide. Both "paddlefish" for the American species and "President" for the U.S. President would be examples of systemic bias, which is discouraged on wikipedia.
Regardless of the above, there are wikiproject guidelines for fish names; American (or Mississippi) is a clearcut example of subsection 1(iv)
  • While it has been suggested that the Chinese paddlefish is extinct, this claim is typically based on comments made before a specimen was caught in 2007, proving that the species was still alive just a few years ago. Additionally, the 2006-8 survey failed to directly capture any, but did get hydroacoustic evidence that sugggested a few were still alive. The Yangtze basin is huge, covering an area roughly equalling a fifth of the United States, and there are relatively few ichthyologists to do the surveying in this region. However, I also realize this part of my comment is splitting hairs: Though several recent authorities (incl. IUCN) have suggested that it may survive, it seems even the most optimistic authorities believe the species is functionally extinct. Not quite the same as extinct, but close.
  • Entirely irrelevant to the above, but the two photos on your userpage are stunning. Unless you protest, I think File:Early Morning Glacier Bay Alaska.jpg will be the new background photo on my laptop. Regards, 62.107.220.107 (talk) 22:11, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
User_talk:62.107.220.107 - Ok, I understand and respect your reasons for not wanting to merge. If I may please redirect our discussion to Talk:Paddlefish as I would like to get input from other editors including Cyclopia, Apokryltaros‎, and Epipelagic before I begin expanding any one or all of the three articles. Sidebar note: You are most welcome to use the Glacier Bay Alaska photo as a background. AtsmeWills talk 01:22, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Nomination for deletion of Template:Living fossil fishes

Template:Living fossil fishes

Can you give me on good reason why I shouldn't just delete Template:Living fossil fishes as an attempted evasion of the current discussion? If you disagree with the discussion, the appropriate remedy is to go to WP:Deletion review and challenge my closing. You can either agree to have it deleted it now, or I will list it for deletion again as an clear WP:POINT which would destroy any credibility you have if you actually want a review of the deletion to go in your favor. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 02:39, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

My apologies. I just saw User:Plastikspork's comment [here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Plastikspork&diff=next&oldid=612163809]. I'll relist it as a new deletion discussion. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 03:09, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
Ricky81682, apologies accepted. Thank you. As creator of the Template, I may be able to save you some time, and trouble. First, a short statement In defense of my credibility - the Template:Living fossil fishes was created as a compromise to the primitive fishes template, not as an attempted evasion. The latter is not how I operate - just an FYI. There actually are editors who discuss things first, (some more extensively than others), and end up working together collaboratively to make substantial improvements to articles. Everything I do stems from "good faith editing". With regards to the new template, Living fossil fishes, as far as I can tell, there has not been an immediate need for the template. Video is a much better option for the space a template would normally occupy. Therefore, I would not oppose removal of the template. AtsmeConsult 03:33, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
I operated on the assumption that wasn't your intent but when I saw Plastikspork's approval, I wanted to make myself clear. WP:BOLD can come back to bite you I'm afraid. It sounds like a number of editors have various ideas, I just through out the idea of looking at the evolution article as I think that would actually be a workable method. Something like Template:Fish_graphical_timeline but I'll defer to you all. Good luck! -- Ricky81682 (talk) 03:58, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
All this talk about fish gave me incentive to GO FISHING.   Self-trout

Your GA nomination of Alligator gar

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Alligator gar you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria.   This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Cwmhiraeth -- Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:40, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi, @Cwmhiraeth:, thank you for being so generous of your time. AtsmeConsult 19:13, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
I am proposing to fail your GA nomination of Alligator gar because it contains copyright violations. One of them is illustrated here where you copied the sentence on the fish's scales from this page. I believe the article American paddlefish also contains copyright violations as illustrated by this Duplicate detector example. I have not looked at the other two articles you have submitted to GAN. It is possible to withdraw articles listed at GAN before a reviewer has taken on the review. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:06, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
@Cwmhiraeth:, being unfamiliar with the GAN process, is it possible for me to simply correct the potential copyright violations, or does it require correction and renomination/reassessment? AtsmeConsult 14:21, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
Correcting them would be ideal and I will hold off on the GA review for a while to give you a chance to do this. You can use "Duplicate detector", https://tools.wmflabs.org/dupdet/ to enable you to find the most obvious violations. I usually set it to 4 or 5 words and at least 20 characters so that it does not come up with lots of trivial finds. Good luck! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 17:23, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
@Cwmhiraeth:, thank you, kindly. I will get right to work on it. Also, thank you for bringing the "Duplicate detector" to my attention. Wow, what a wonderful tool. One question for you - if a reliable source states on their homepage (website) that it is ok to utilize the information they made available to researchers, students, and educators, and actually encourage direct quotations with inline citations, does that clear us with regards to copyright violations? AtsmeConsult 22:29, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
I'm no expert. Try looking at this FAQ page. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 04:58, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
On a different theme, I was asked to select one of my recent DYKs for use in a Signpost article about the WikiCup, and I chose the chain moray, Echidna catenata, and I see the image, which will be included in the report, was taken by you. Very nice! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:15, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
Great news. Thank you for sharing. Congratulations on your Signpost article. AtsmeConsult 05:24, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
