Copyvio info

Hi Atrian. When you tag an article as a copyvio, you should complete the process by following the instructions at the top of the notice. Specifically, for Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School you should have added an entry in Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2006 June 19. Otherwise, the page remains as you left it indefinitely, or until someone notices it. I've added this one to today's copyvio listing. Mindmatrix 15:19, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Avenue Road

edit

You're right that my earlier comment about the naming of Avenue Road was unsubstantiated. I have now provided a substantiated version and removed the unsubstantiated assertion that the name is unusual. My authority is the Collins M25 London Master Street Atlas which lists many streets with this name. Of course we may be using different meanings of unusual; if so that needs to be clarified before further revisions are made. John FitzGerald 13:44, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Got your message. Will do. John FitzGerald 18:28, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I put the citation in. When I get the time I'll figure out just how many Avenue Roads there are in London – there are about three inches of map references to Avenue Roads in the atlas, but some may refer to the dsame street appearing on different pages (I haven't found any duplicates yet, but I haven't worked my way through all of them). Some other citations are needed in the article, too – for example, the source of the quotation from Robert Fulford. The whole question of the unusualness of the name needs to be handled in a more wikilike way, too. I replaced an unsourced assertion that the name was unusual with an unsourced assertion that some people find it unusual. A safe enough assertion, that last one, but the question is whether the unusualness of the name needs to be mentioned at all if it's not really unusual. Again it depends what unusual means, I suppose. John FitzGerald 18:43, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

And I just noticed that the article said Avenue Road was an extension of University although they don't meet. So I corrected that with a citation.

Should mention I'm what you call a quiet environmentalist, too. Paid for it over the last few days, but it's worth it. I realize environmentalism has to go beyond the personal, but it has to start with the personal. John FitzGerald 18:53, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yep, I was using fans a lot the last few days. My non-personal environmental activities are pretty much non-existent at the moment – I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have. One thing that might interest me is an environmental organization whcih is organized in chapters, rather than the centralized ones which dominate the field and in which your chief activity is writing cheques. John FitzGerald 19:39, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the advice. if you could recommend some organizations I'd appreciate it. John FitzGerald 14:19, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, again. Yes, I do live in TO (beautiful midtown), so suggestions about organizations would be helpful. You've also given me some ideas about organizations to look into. Thanks.
Secondly, I was wondering about whether Avenue Road should include any longer the discussion of the name's oddity, given that it's definitely not an unusual name elsewhere (if you haven't checked the article recently, I found 40 [forty] in London, mainly very short residential streets, but Avenue Roads all the same). I realize that some people do consider it odd, though. For the moment I'm assuming it will stay in. I've been looking for a citation for Robert Fulford's remark, without success. However, he's pretty approachable by e-mail, so I can always go to the source. John FitzGerald 15:20, 8 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the list. I've also found a couple of local organizations that look interesting. John FitzGerald 15:16, 10 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hono(u)rs

edit

Atrian, I'm well aware that "honours" is an alternative spelling, and I'm perfectly willing to acknowledge "honors" as the variant. And I spent some time stressing over whether to delete the "(u)". After a look at the Wiki (not specifically the contract bridge) style manual, I decided to strike it for a couple of reasons: I find the insertion of the parenthetical "u" visually jarring, and the manual advises against two different spellings on the same page. So, if we want to comply with that advice, we'd have to spell it "hono(u)rs" throughout, and I really doubt we want to do that. And then what of colo(u)rs? and favo(u)rs? and ardo(u)r?

Fowler's Modern English Usage says, "Those who are willing to put national prejudice aside and examine the facts soon realize, first, that the British -our words are much fewer in proportion to the -or words than they supposed, and, secondly, that there seems to be no discoverable line between the two sets so based on principle as to serve any useful purpose."

I've left your recent revision as is, but I think that we should let "honour" go the way of "governour." Xlmvp 15:51, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Huntsville and Lake of Bays Transportation Company

edit

Regardless if the company Huntsville and Lake of Bays Transportation Company expired or not, it was a different company formed in 1902 that built the Huntsville and Lake of Bays Railway which did not begin actual operations until 1904. I never had the chance to ride the original railway at Lake of Bays (Ontatio). Having a long time interest in railways and steamboats, I had only heard of the railway about 1969. From 1971 I was a volunteer on the Segwun Steamboat Museum. In 1972 I met Niall MacKay, who knew a lot about the railway. At that time he was collecting information for his book "By Steam Boat And Steam Train." I have been good friends with him ever since, and his brother and mom and dad too. In 1984 I was living in Parry Sound, Ontario and working as a Railroad car mechanic for North America's best Railway, at South Parry and Huntsville, Ontario, when we formed the Huntsville & Lake of Bays Railway Society. I am Life Member # 6. That same year I drove to Pioneer Village (Nebraska) at Minden, Nebraska where I met with Harold Warp and presented to him a copy of Mr. MacKay's book (at my expense). Until then there was nothing in the museum to suggest that the H. K. Porter, Inc locomotives came from Lake of Bays. Meanwhile back at Huntsville, I designed the front of the gasoline locomotive, and purchased, re-gaged and restored the Handcar. I also suggested the use of retired Excavator machinery for the base of the turntables now in use at the railway in Huntsville.Wrecksdale Wreck 01:25, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey man, I just said that you shouldn't be deleting those pages without any reason. I did not delete the Afd tags yet. No one has provided any support for deleting them. If no one does within a week, I am within my rights to delete those tags. I am the only person who has written anything on those talk pages. Either way if no one speaks then I will assume my voice will speak the loudest. I am not going to stand by and watch good articles that promote public transit use be deleted by certain "elements" who think they own this site. Also, you stated in your posting on my page, that you will ignore my opinion. That really is not fair seeing as you have not supported your choice to delete. My opinion does count. And by the way... other people have supported me. You are not the czar of this site, if that's what you think. Please be careful about saying you will ignore people. Re: Boat or Ship?

edit

A Steamship is something I think about the size of RMS Titanic or the RMS Mauritania. The Mississippi paddle wheelers were considered to be steamboats and they were a lot bigger than the S S Algonquin. Generally the rule is that a ship can carry a boat, but a boat cannot carry a ship, however, in this case I am more comfortable with Steamboat.

The article deals with three different companies by name:

Huntsville and Lake of Bays Transportation Company,

Huntsville and Lake of Bays Navigation Company, and

Huntsville and Lake of Bays Railway Company.

Why then wouldn't you list each one on an idividual page? Then you could present each one in chronological order, and also link each page with WIKI LINKS where the other title is mentioned within an article. Also the Huntsville & Lake of Bays Railway can be listed in such categories as Defunct railway companies of Canada or Portage railway without including the steamboat information, but still linked to it.

Keep in mind that although the Huntsville and Lake of Bays Railway proposed by Huntsville and Lake of Bays Transportation Company, was chartered as a separate company, and that although the railway was built by the Huntsville & Lake of Bays (and Lake Simcoe) Navigation Company, this was after the Transportation Company ceased to exist, so why is the railway shown on the same page as the Transportation Company?

Wrecksdale Wreck 05:59, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Boat or Ship? I reworked the article to improve readability. I changed the boldface to italics for the additional company names. This is in accordance with Wikipedia guidelines to use boldface for the article name only. I tend to use steamship and steamboat interchangeably however I suspect that there is a subtle difference. Which one is appropriate for this article? Atrian 14:03, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:LyleOverbay.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

Bt article

edit

I am a new user of Wikipedia. I have been informally studying Bt for a number of years, and I was not surprised to find that the Bt article might need some updating in terms of human safety (my focus), which is now not so certain as it was 10 years ago.

I crafted a major revision to the article by keeping everything that was there and just making additions, but especially as a newbie I do not want to disturb things, so I have held off posting it. I am also trying to contact "PR Johnson" who seems to be editing this article of late.

My draft revision is too long to post here but I would like to send it to you for comments.

Ojibwe for "burnt" is wiisakode-, which looks quite similar to the "Wonscota-" part of the name. The quote is taken from a newspaper reference -- I'll look it up in a moment. CJCurrie 22:50, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have updated the Belt Line article to include references. The Belt line/TIR locomotives were 42, 43, and 44, 4-4-2T commuter tank engines, all specially built for the Belt Line. The TIR used these locomotives because they had short wheelbases and could negotiate the sharp curves in their system. They were also cheap to lease and purchase.

The TIR had a history of using clapped-out locomotives; Number 4, a 2-4-2T was acquired in 1911, and was built for the Manhattan Elevated Railway some 40 years before. It proved too weak to handle growing freight requirements. It was sold in 1912. The 2005 4-4-0 was acquired after spending 45 years on the GT.

The book does have pictures of the locomotives, which it references as Page 104 - 43: Merrilees Collection/National Archives of Canada/PA 194569 Page 104 - 44: Merrilees Collection/National Archives of Canada/PA 194560 Page 72: - 43: Merrilees Collection/National Archives of Canada/PA 194567

Canceled

edit

Just noticed your change of spelling, and don't worry, I'm not here to start an edit war! lol.

I actually had spell checked the article, and just wondered how I possibly missed that. Turns out, we're both right :)

According to the Associated Press Stylebook, the word is spelled with only one l. It's simply "canceled." However, canceled is American usage, and cancelled is British, (typically.) Personally I don't care, so whatever floats the boat works for me, but if anyone gets all up in arms about this being an American English site, and spellings should reflect that, blah blah (sheesh, aren't there more important things to argue about? lol) it may be just simpler to leave it at the "stupid American spelling" of one L lol. GoldDragon's version is excessive, using entire lengthy quotes where a summary of the gist would be more appropriate, and CJCurrie's version is not problematic in any way that I can discern. But the problem is that GoldDragon has already decided that I'm biased because I didn't take his side the last time I got involved in a dispute between them, and thus he wouldn't take me as a neutral party in the dispute. And additionally, I'm less than an hour away from leaving for a five-hour bus ride, so any intervention I could offer would be a swoop-in, swoop-out, swoop-back-in-tomorrow affair that wouldn't really be all that helpful. Kennedy International Airport, O'Hare International Airport, etc...), an airline that have announced new service or are ending service from that airport have begin and an end date at the end of it. It is WP:AIRPORTS guideline but if you are against this in anyway, Please discuss this at WP:AIRPORTS. Thanks! Cashier freak (talk) 02:56, 5 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Amanda tapping

edit

I added that citation needed to Amanda Tapping because there IS NO CONFIRMED third Stargate SG-1 DVD movie, that is nothing more than a fan wish at this point in time, she has only committed to the Stargate Atlantis movie (which you deleted, which is a fact). So instead of me giving someone a chance to prove themselves, simply delete the incorrect information as no such movie exists in any way publicly. Vaako (talk) 1:01, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Hmm? I thought you wanted it in category:Rivers of Ontario? You did a couple years ago, anyway. --Trovatore (talk) 02:49, 14 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

You are now a Reviewer

edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 04:56, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Toronto and the former cities

edit

Hello. It appears you have reverted my edits to Scarborough, North York, East York, York, Etobicoke, and Old Toronto. I do agree that the term "District of Toronto" isn't something used publicly, but it appears that it is widely used in Wikipedia itself (for example, the Toronto article's infobox lists the former boroughs as "Districts"). At the same time, I believe that the term "Dissolved Municipality" could be replaced with something like "Former Borough of Toronto", etc. If the articles should not term them as "Districts" then I think the Toronto article infobox should give them a different collective name, like "Former Boroughs". Question about a photo of yours

edit

Hey, I have a question after viewing this photo... Is this a volunteer organization that does this? I am an avid trailbuilder so I'd love to find out how to get involved. Cheers, ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 03:25, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

edit

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:09, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Philosophical Institute

edit

Hello,

I have recently proposed to merge Philosophical Institute into Palacký_University_of_Olomouc#Philosophy. Since you participated in the Discussion about the article's deletion, I would like to invite you to share your views on the proposed merger. Thank you very much. Hi. When you recently edited HMCS Fredericton (K245), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Japanese (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

File permission problem with File:Charles Sauriol.JPG

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Charles Sauriol.JPG. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Dianna (talk) 20:24, 24 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Atrian. It was a difficult decision to tag this photo for deletion, because it is likely irreplaceable. But we do not actually have the proper permissions in place. The okay of the grandson is not adequate, unless they took the picture. What we need is the permission of the original photographer, whoever they may have been. Since that will likely be impossible at this point in time, I am going to add a fair-use rationale so that we can keep the local copy of the picture for use in the article. The copy on the Commons will be deleted. Regards, -- Dianna (talk) 16:26, 27 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
