Hi, and allow me to offer what looks like a belated welcome to Wikipedia! I'm hoping you can take more pictures in and around Kourou! It's not a place that someone like myself can get to often :-) , so I have to visit vicariously through the pictures that others upload. If you haven't thought about it, Commons is a good place to upload more and make a little gallery for Kourou; as you can see from commons:Category:French Guiana, all we have now for the whole of French Guiana is maps and a couple photos of Cayenne. If you're more interested in writing than maintenance, you could try expanding stubs. A list of all the stub categoies can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types. If you're fluent in french, you could work on articles in Category:France stubs and all of its subcategoies. I'm sure there will be information in the french articles that can be added to the english articles, and maybe a little bit the other way around as well. You may also be able to add links between french and english versions of articles (See Wikipedia:Interwiki_links#Interlanguage_link). Userpage + userboxes

I think I've fixed your userpage the way you'd like it, try out some same text to see if I've done it right. The problem you had was that your userbox was set to float to the left instead of the right. The second problem was where to put the userbox, too high and it smooshed against the babelbox, too low and there's a gap. I think I found the right place. I bet the problem is that you have your browser window maximized. mine's usually at half-size or so, so I missed the formatting isue you found. Photographs

There are lots of articles that need new photographs. Do you have a photograph of a Cecropia, in particular a monocultural (single species) grove of Cecropias on a flood plain? And a close up of an entire leaf? This article needs a lot of work, and there is a lot of interesting information that could be added about this important Amazonian tree, and the pictures would be a great start. If you look at the picture you will know what plant I am talking about. What a great offer, to contribute photographs of Amazonian plants. KP Botany 19:08, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I didn't know that Cecropia was a king of Athens, also. It's also the name of a moth. I will look up its etymology in my Stearns (a writer on botanical Latin who explains the derivation of many names, even Greek ones) and Greek books. It's not a stupid question, it's curiosity, and everyone, it seems to me, is curious about how plants get their names.

Please upload to Wikimedia commons, as TeunSpaans suggests, as this plant is an important plant in helping to prepare unstable soils at the edge of the water for other plants to take root in the rain forests of Central and South America--it merits articles all over the Wikipedia world, and a good picture, even if not identified to species level will be a very valuable contribution. I think the most helpful thing would be to post a note to the Talk:Cecropia with the name of the image in WikiMedia so anyone can add it to the article.

For information on the photos it would be helpful if you include your country, if you feel comfortable giving this information. I am uploading local pictures (California) to WikiMedia right now, but have not learned how to categorize them usefully. When I do, I will categorize yours in as many botany categories as I can think of. Or ask others to do so.

Please take as many pictures of the flowers and the fruits as you would like to and upload as you have time. I am certain they will also be valuable. Amazonia has the most diverse flora of probably the entire planet, but if you narrow it down a bit to country, I or someone else may be able to find a good on-line flora for you or someone who is willing to identify the plant species you photograph.

Also, the Cecropia is pretty distinctive just by the appearance of its leaves and how fast growing it is, something you will have noticed.

I can't imagine anything more interesting than living in Amazonia, shooting pictures of fantastic and unique plants, and learning a bit about them at the same time. Hello, I very much appreciate your editing of my translation. I was taught in American English to put two spaces after each period; I think that Canadians put only one after. That and my laptop's screen is broken (I can only use the right half) and I have to shrink windows down to make them readable, it probably affects my formatting. Commons

If I may offer my personal suggestion, I've tried to work on Jean-Jacques Rousseau (author-filmmaker), but it isn't going well. As it stands it's an automatically-translated version of the original french article. It's pretty unreadable at the moment, and my limited French can't do it justice.

No, there's no rule about what you have to say in the edit summary when you revert vandalism. I've got some automated help; it generates the message you see when I just click a "Rollback" button. Concordia Newsletter

NEWSLETTER

Concordia is currently trying to relaunch. I, and all the members of the ex-council, wish to welcome new members to the group. We are a group who aim to promote remaining civil, in an environment where messages can easily be interpretated wrongly.

Help out now!

• Try and help people remain civil! Talk to them, and help them in any way possible. Do not be afraid to use the talk page.
• Give people the Civility Barnstar.
• Make and spread some Wikitokens so people know there are people to help if they want assistance.

We are a community, so can only work though community contributions and support. It's the helping that counts.

Decision Making

The council expired one month ago, but due to the current position of the group the current council will remain until the position of the group can be assessed, and whether it would be sensible to keep Concordia going. For most decisions, however, it will be decided by all who choose to partake in discussions. I am trying to relaunch because of the vast amounts of new members we have received, demonstrating that the aims are supported.

Les projets régionaux

Ta question n'était pas du tout stupide. à terme, il faudrait en effet remplacer tout ce qui suit (à part pour le truc français qui a l'air de s'orienter vers un "translation of the Week") par des redirects, en même temps il faut être un peu diplomate parceque voire une page qu'on aime bien disparaitre du jour au lendemain on peut le mal le prendre, et en même temps il ne faut pas trop attendre non plus, parce qu'il est de plus en plus pénible de synchroniser les demandes de traduction faites sur l'un ou sur l'autre.

Je pense qu'il faudrait laisser un message d'une prhase visible en haut de la page, ainsi qu'un message en page de discussion pour leur dire qu'on veut tout centraliser. S'ils sont d'accord pour le redirect, on y va. S'ils ne sont pas d'accord, on discuter. S'il n'y a personne, on fusionne quand même au bout d'une semaine.

Deaf-mute

Hi Arria Belli. I'm seeking opinions and possible support for an issue in which I'm in a debate with other Wikipedians. I'm trying to change indiscrimant use of the term "deaf-mute" in describing deaf people in general. To see some comments related to the issue, see Talk:The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, as well as my own Talk page, User talk:Ward3001. You can also follow the links to other discussions. Right now I'm about the only person addressing the issue because deaf people are such a small minority. Other Wikipedians, with apparently no prior knowledge of the issue, are reverting my edits. I'm again asking those who commented against using "deaf-mute" to once again help me out. There is a persistent user who has repeatedly reverted "deaf" to "deaf-mute", and has again reverted (and probably will do so again until this issue is mediated [in process] or arbitrated). So far I'm the only one who has reverted it back to "deaf". If others could please put The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter on your watchlist and revert when necessary, I think it would have a much bigger impact. Just be careful not to violate the 3-revert-rule. As I'm writing this, the article needs reversion. There are four instances in the article where "deaf" is being reverted to "deaf-mute". I just came across Yvert et Tellier, which has been translated from French but obviously is by a non-fluent English speaker or by a machine. I was surprised and happy to see that you translated this article into French. If you've got more time and energy for E-to-F translations, you might look at Shōji Ueda. It's largely my creation and most of it (as well as being uninteresting) lacks specific sourcing because so much of it is written up all over the place; there's already a French article but it could use some work.

Category:Japanese photographers of course takes you to a huge number of articles of which many are absolutely uninteresting. To see which are less horrible, just look among Wikipedia:WikiProject History of photography/Japanese photographers for names with "OK" next to them. (NB "OK" here merely means "better than hopeless".)

I've just realized that not only is there only one GA, Kikai Hiroh, there's also only one B-class article, Ueno Hikoma. Really disappointing. (Incidentally, the failure of the GA candidacy of the latter made me lose faith in the whole GA rigmarole.) If you don't have access to a Japanese library (or bookstore), Kikai will seem rather elusive for now, but world (or anyway NYC) fame is set to start this very afternoon. Heh, GAs and FAs have the same reputation in every Wikipedia, I think. I rarely set foot in fr:wp's GA and FA pages.

I am ja-0.5, unfortunately, but when traveling this summer I hope to buy some books and dictionaries to learn Japanese (and perhaps Korean). I won't be going to Asia but to Europe, where I'll be able to find these kinds of books far more easily than at home. I also try to take photographs, but I'm not very good (as attested by my Flickr account).

Please Help! - I am looking for the support of ballet and dance enthusiasts on Wikipedia, to help me prevent the proposed merging of an article about a famous ballet production, into an article about the ballet's music. The music would not have been written had it not been for the choreographer Frederick Ashton, who commissioned it specially for this ballet. This ballet was one of Ashton's most famous works and it would be a terrible shame for this article to be merged into an article that focusses primarily on the music and the composer rather than the ballet and the choreography.

I need help with White Argentine

Hi, I come here asking for someone who can help me. The trouble is this; there is an article named "White Argentine"; both the term and article comprise all Argentinians of predominantly European/Middle Eastern ancestry (It doesn't include, for example, Mestizo and Mulatto Argentines). The article was created in July 2007, and I found it and first edited it in April 2010. I greatly expanded it creating a History section with data about European immigration to Argentina, and the influence of the descendants of those European immigrants in Argentina's culture, music, literature, entertainment, etc. Suddenly, several users appeared criticizing the article of "Original research" and violation of BLP policy, etc, so they tearing the article to pieces, erasing entire sections at will. They allege that there is no such group, that it needs self-identification to be acknowledged as such; the problem is that Argentina's Census Bureau (INDEC) does not conduct racial/ethnic censuses (except for the Afro-Argentines and the Amerindians), and so "Argentino blanco" is not a label or umbrella term used in Argentina. But I know that White Argentines really exist and comprise a majority of the country's population -all sources agree in 85%-; and I know it because I live in Argentina, and I am one of them. I need an expert on the matter to guide me where I can search for better sources: bibliography, data, censuses, etc. Can anyone help me, please?--Pablozeta (talk) 03:46, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

Language-population update project

Hi. The 18th edition of Ethnologue just came out, and if we divide up our language articles among us, it won't take long to update them. I would appreciate it if you could help out, even if it's just a few articles (5,000 articles is a lot for just me), but I won't be insulted if you delete this request.

A largely complete list of articles to be updated is at Category:Language articles citing Ethnologue 17. The priority articles are in Category:Language articles with old Ethnologue 17 speaker data. These are the 10% that have population figures at least 25 years old.

Probably 90% of the time, Ethnologue has not changed their figures between the 17th and 18th editions, so all we need to do is change "e17" to "e18" in the reference (ref) field of the language info box. That will change the citation for the artcle to the current edition. Please put the data in the proper fields, or the info box will flag it as needing editorial review. The other relevant fields are "speakers" (the number of native speakers in all countries), "date" (the date of the reference or census that Ethnologue uses, not the date of Ethnologue!), and sometimes "speakers2". Our convention has been to enter e.g. "1990 census" when a census is used, as other data can be much older than the publication date. Sometimes a citation elsewhere in the article depends on the e17 entry, in which case you will need to change "name=e17" to "name=e18" in the reference tag (assuming the 18th edition still supports the cited claim).

Remember, we want the *total* number of native speakers, which is often not the first figure given by Ethnologue. Sometimes the data is too incompatible to add together (e.g. a figure from the 1950s for one country, and a figure from 2006 for another), in which case it should be presented that way. That's one use for the "speakers2" field. If you're not sure, just ask, or skip that article.

Data should not be displayed with more than two, or at most three, significant figures. Sometimes it should be rounded off to just one significant figure, e.g. when some of the component data used by Ethnologue has been approximated with one figure (200,000, 3 million, etc.) and the other data has greater precision. For example, a figure of 200,000 for one country and 4,230 for another is really just 200,000 in total, as the 4,230 is within the margin of rounding off in the 200,000. If you want to retain the spurious precision of the number in Ethnologue, you might want to use the {{sigfig}} template. (First parameter in this template is for the data, second is for the number of figures to round it off to.)

Dates will often need to be a range of all the country data in the Ethnologue article. When entering the date range, I often ignore dates from countries that have only a few percent of the population, as often 10% or so of the population isn't even separately listed by Ethnologue and so is undated anyway.

If Ethnologue does not provide a date for the bulk of the population, just enter "no date" in the date field. But if the population figure is undated, and hasn't changed between the 17th & 18th editions of Ethnologue, please leave the ref field set to "e17", and maybe add a comment to keep it so that other editors don't change it. In cases like this, the edition of Ethnologue that the data first appeared in may be our only indication of how old it is. We still cite the 14th edition in a couple dozen articles, so our readers can see that the data is getting old.

The articles in the categories linked above are over 90% of the job. There are probably also articles that do not currently cite Ethnologue, but which we might want to update with the 18th edition. I'll need to generate another category to capture those, probably after most of the Ethnologue 17 citations are taken care of.
