Your nomination of Approach to Kata Tjuta edit

Hello, Arlen66, and thank you for nominating the image Approach to Kata Tjuta for voting on featured picture candidates. However, I notice that you did not follow all the instructions at the nomination procedure page. Depending on any discussion already there, you may want to remove your nomination and then re-submit it, this time following the instructions correctly. If you do not know how to remove the nomination, ask me (on my talk page) and I will do it for you, or advise you what to do next. Meanwhile, please take some time to learn more about our encyclopedia, and I hope you continue to contribute in the future. Thanks. —Vanderdeckenξφ 11:56, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

FPC nom edit

Hi, I'm a new user that just got a welcome message from you (Vanderdecken) and thought I'd put in my two cents. I appreciated the message. I uploaded a photo yesterday that I thought might be a nice addition to the page on Kata Tjuta in Australia. I don't use Wikipedia much, but a friend saw the picture and suggested I submit it. I'm pretty clueless about how to navigate this site and clearly made some mistakes of protocol while trying to figure out how to make my submission. So today I found what felt like a barrage of criticism for my missteps along with the "accusation" that I had just registered as a user before uploading. Maybe that's just the wiki culture and I'm not familiar with it, but your messages of support (one personal, one that might have been an autoreply(?)) were the ones that made me reconsider my initial reaction which was to walk away. Thanks. I'll cautiously consider submitting other photos (and will try to be better at using the site properly). Arlen66 18:57, 5 January 2007 (UTC) (Copied from user talk)Reply

Er... hehe, the ""accusation" that I had just registered as a user before uploading" was me. I was just notifying the other voters that you were a new user - we tend to get a lot of vandalism from people who create an account just for the purpose of uploading an image and trying to get it featured, sometimes disrupting FPC. It's standard practice to, when seeing a new user voting/nominating on FPC, place a small note like this under their vote stating that they're a new user with less than 20 edits. It warns the voters that, because we can't necessarily trust them (we don't know who they are, whether they're going to be disruptive, if they're familiar with policy), they might want to be careful about what the user does/says. We had cases (like this one) where the original nominator created five new accounts pretending to be different people and voted with them - gaming the system just to get his picture featured. His picture was thrown out as a compromised nomiation, and he's since been warned that he'll be banned if he tries sockpuppeting again. It's no personal insult against you (for a start that would be against WP:NPA ;)), but it's sometimes necessary to warn. Anyway, we can see you're in good faith now, so enjoy being a Wikipedian! Any questions, ask me, I'll be glad to help. —Vanderdeckenξφ 11:41, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
